Emotional and Informational Supportive Exchanges as Predictors of Relational Health and Well-Being in Computer-Mediated Support Groups for Individuals with a Traumatic Brain InjuryDiGiovanni, Craig January 2018 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Belle Liang / Traumatic brain injury (TBI) survivors often experience isolation from their primary support network following their injury (Marsh, Kersel, Havill, & Sleigh, 1998). Computer-mediated support groups (CMSGs) offer a virtual platform for individuals with complex medical concerns to exchange emotional and informational support (Braithwaite, Waldron, & Finn, 1999). To date, no research has examined the use of CMSGs, such as TBI-related Facebook support groups, for TBI survivors. There is also limited research investigating how emotional and informational support provided and received (i.e., supportive exchanges) relate to well-being and online relational health (Liang et al., 2002). This study examined the relationship between four supportive exchanges and well-being and relational health for TBI survivors using TBI-related Facebook support groups, as well as whether a gender norm—emotional control—and network preference moderated these relationships. Participants included 191 TBI survivors recruited across 14 TBI-related Facebook support groups. Multiple regression analyses tested whether four supportive exchanges directly predicted well-being and relational health after controlling for age and extraversion. Results revealed that supportive exchanges did not predict well-being. However, emotional support provided, emotional support received, and informational support received all predicted higher levels of online relational health. Informational support provided predicted lower levels of online relational health. Additional multiple regression analyses tested whether emotional control and four aspects of network preference moderated the relationship between supportive exchanges and well-being and relational health. Although higher levels of emotional control directly predicted lower levels of relational health, and a preference for weak-tie support networks (e.g., online acquaintances) predicted lower levels of well-being, the moderating effects were generally not significant. The findings underscore the importance of supportive exchanges in developing online relational health for TBI survivors using Facebook support groups. It also suggests that this relationship was not dependent on emotional control and network preference. Future research should investigate other factors affecting supportive online communication for TBI survivors and when they may benefit most from online support. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2018. / Submitted to: Boston College. Previous issue date: 2018-03-28 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior - CAPES / Through a study of the Brazilian Free Movement (MBL) in the post-impeachment of Dilma Rousseff, this dissertation analyzes political activism in virtual social networks ? cyberactivism. The MBL was notable in 2015 and 2016 for commanding protests that took millions of people to the streets and influenced the fall of the Workers? Party (PT) of the Presidency of the Republic. The main objectives of this work are to understand how cyberactivism becomes institutionalized in politics, how the group acts after impeachment and how Brazilian cyberactivism has moved from guerrilla to industrialization with MBL. A total of 102 publications of the fanpage of the movement on Facebook are analyzed in three periods of 2017: in the two accusations of Justice against the President of the Republic, Michel Temer, for corruption and other crimes; and the acquittal of Senator A?cio Neves of the PSDB by his parliamentary colleagues who rejected a decision of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) that had removed him from the National Congress for attempting to obstruct Justice in Operation Lava Jato. The method applied was Discursive Textual Analysis, which resulted in metatexts that synthesize the core of the cyberactivism practiced by MBL. We discussed the transformations of cyberspace, the characteristics of the new networked society, virtual social networks and the rise of cyberactivism, as well as topics such as filter bubbles, obscure algorithms, fake news and internet monopoly. Ciberativism, which emerges in tune with the ideal of independence and freedom sought by the creators of the internet, is also an instrument for the propagation of hatred, manipulation and lies, and for the intensification of radicalisms, thus occupying a central role in cyberculture studies and social movements.

(In)visibilidades das juventudes pós-modernas: trilhas estéticas na ciberculturaZacariotti, Marluce 28 August 2015 (has links)
This text addresses the (in) visibility of youths (tribes) in postmodernity, with the assumption that in the virtual spaces of confluence between technology and art they can gain visibility. The approach is anchored in theory, especially in the French thinker Michel Maffesoli, whose method the comprehensive sociology. The theoretical framework articulated the maffesoliano thought to youths as a category or metaphor way of being youthful and technological implications in the process of interaction, mediation and empowerment of youth aesthetic expressions. We use Maffesoli notions as categories to understand the new forms of tribes sociality through their various art forms in cyberspace. Flash Mobs descriptions and analyzes demonstrations posted on YouTube videos and groups that maintain website / Facebook pages for dissemination of artistic and cultural meetings mediated by cyberspace allowed realize that not all tribes operate through the same dynamic, which it led us to develop the idea of intensity of youth practices both in terms of the forms of ownership, such as how to relate to what was appropriate. The aesthetic-emotional bias leads to identify the mode of being youthful with a Dionysian spirit. As Aphrodite's metaphor (sensuality referred not only to sexuality, but freedom is sought in living without rules, a return to nature) that, for us, also round the being-together of the tribes. Therefore we find in the artistic frames a visibility of youths plenty the dialogue on physical and virtual interface and occupy public spaces in the city.

Scientific culture and scientific communication are concepts related to each other.
The way of disseminating the contents of this area is determinant for the
understanding, retention and replication of the information to a non-scientific
public. On the other hand, Lima Metropolitana university students have full
participation in social media, especially in Facebook. Thus, creating a fanpage where
run scientific communication can contribute to generate interest in such content
and create more scientific culture. Several socio-cultural theories of communication
commune with the characteristics of Web 2.0 (characterized by social softwares)
and young internet users. In addition, the potentialities of social media erase the
distinction between learning spaces, social and leisure spaces, suggesting the
usefulness of bringing together these types of activities. For this reason, scientific
communication must adapt to the changes in the media and in the way of interacting
with its audiences. After a feasibility study (interviews and focus group), it develops,
executes and manages for 2 years a fanpage on Facebook dedicated to scientific
dissemination. During this period, its performance is evaluated three times and,
finally, it investigates the response and perception (interviews) towards the fanpage
by the target audience. It is observed that, using entertainment, identifying and
including scientific aspects in everyday situations are the most effective methods for
scientific communication. Also, offline promotions are more advantageous: both to
get more followers and potential collaborators. It is concluded that scientific
communication strengthens its implementation through Web 2.0, since it allows
satisfying needs such as communication, socialization and participation in the
shared interests of Internet users. All this fosters a scientific communication related
to the interests of university students. / Tesis

sociales, chats, blogs o webs.

The present paper is a study about the communicative interactions of the teenagers group in
Facebook (what do, what say, how say) to observe the features of the digital identity.

Thus, the paper aim was describe the digital identity features in teenagers of the VII level of
EBR to the public educative institution when they interaction in the Facebook social
network. For this purpose, the methodology that we have used is the case study on the basis
in qualitative approach and a descriptive level.
The teenagers of this paper were fourteen students who are 15 to 16 years old. For the
collection data has used the observation technique and as collection data instrument has used
a data sheet; it allowed to register the teenagers’ interactions in the Facebook on the basis of
four subcategories: the management of the Facebook, declarative identity, active identity
and the calculated identity. Furthermore, the data finded were analyzed through the pattern
matching and objective interpretation (Yin, 1994) on the basis of the aims.
The observations were made about the teenagers’ behavior when they were realizing
interactions in the Facebook. They have reflected that most teenagers build their digital
identity of unconscious way who are motivated by obtain most popularity and visibility on
the network; as that the teenagers show their private life and reputation without consider the
influence of this behaviors in their personal develop and a posteriori in workplace and
professional life. On the other hand, we have identified that the teenagers group require of
control’ and regulation mechanisms (Boyd, 2002) and digital and informational competence
(Giones & Serrat, 2010) for a proper management of their digital identity in the Facebook. / Tesis

Martínez Moscoso, Norma Berenice 22 November 2013 (has links)
Tesis

Satira a parodie na sociálních sítích: falešné české profily / Satire and parody on social networks: fake Czech profilesPoloch, Jiří January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this work is to map fake Czech profiles on social networks Facebook and Twitter. "Fake profiles" in this case mean those where authors are acting as a well-known person, company or institution. Best known Czech profiles are Twitter's @schwarzenbergk, @kardinalvlk or @ovcacek_jiri and Facebook profile @jiriovcacekunofficial. After a general introduction to the topic, which includes, among other things, a brief look at the topic of political satire and the introduction of social networks, including the regulation they take to protect personality, the main part follows. It analyzes 8 different Czech false profiles. The content of the posts, the account statistics, the most successful posts and possibly other related information are presented. An important part of the work are interviews with authors of these profiles as well as with counterparts: real people or companies. This offers a close look at the backstage of the creation and running of the profile and, on the other hand, the possibility to gain the reaction of the concerned party. A comparative analysis of false and real Jiří Ovčáček's Facebook profiles is conducted in this part as well. The next section is included in order to bring a wider view of the issue. It is devoted to similar profiles abroad, which gives the possibility...

The aim of this research was to know, through a cross sectional study, how are the variable Facebook’s use, social support (perceived and online) and life satisfaction are related in a university students sample from Lima. The non-probabilistic sample was constituted by 488 students, grouped in socio-demographic and educational variables (sex, age, current course of study and career). The variable use of Facebook implies frequency, intensity and type; it allowed to categorize three levels of use: high, medium and low. Three scales whit high levels of internal consistency were applied in order to measure the variables perceived social support, virtual social support and life satisfaction: the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) (α = 0.91) (Zimmet, Dahlem, and Farley, 1988), Social Support Network and Internet (ISSIR-A) (α = 0.77) (Kina, 2011) and the Scale of Satisfaction with Life (ESV) (α = 0.80) (Diener, Emmons, Larsen and Griffin, 1985). The results pointed out that Facebook use is positively related with perceived social support (RS (488) =. 11, p <.05) and virtual social support (r (488) =. 17, p <0.01) and perceived social support is related with life satisfaction (r (488) =. 40, p <0.01). A multiple regression allowed to specify that perceived social support (standardized β =.38, p<.01), age (standardized β =-.11, p<.01) and socioeconomic perceived level (standardized β =-.14, p<.01) predicts life satisfaction. This research helped us to understand the relevance of Facebook’s use on the social support of university students and clarify how this variables are associated, also demonstrate its importance in students’ life satisfaction. / Tesis
