My research is comprised in three articles: in the first article, I describe how the brand image is created or augmented in the fan page environment, therefore providing demonstrable evidence of value creation. In the second article, I describe how individuals use fan page semiotic elements to communicate their identities. Finally, in the third article, I describe the possible communal characteristics of a fan page and the conditions that enable it to evolve to the virtual brand community concept. As a result, I will contribute to the marketing literature on the use of Facebook for communicating brand identity, on the co-creation of the brand image in social media context, and on the conceptual definition of fan pages as a communal environment.

Given the high level of competition that is typical in most contemporary markets, much has been studied in marketing literature regarding loyalty, commitment and retention of consumers. The focus of strategies that have been proposed is the conquering of consumers emotionally committed to the brands, who, amongst other benefits, would be responsible for spontaneously defending and divulging them. By observing the postindustrial phenomenon of grouping of people around similar consumption patterns and, in some extreme cases, around a specific brand, some strategists have proposed the creation of brand communities as a way to retain their current clients and even attract new ones. In the entertainment sector, these communities are quite typical and appear in a very evident way thorugh numerous fan clubs. Besides such characteristic, it is also possible to observe that in this sector there is much more evidence and concentration of committed consumers, the so-called devoted fans. Thus, in order to aid the comprehension of the relationship between brand communities and consumers loyalty, we have pursued to understand the role played by a fan club towards a consumer that individually already shows a behavior of commitment, i.e. a devoted fan. Amongst the various possible forms of fan clubs in this sector, we have chosen to study the case of a celebrity, taking into consideration the cultural and economic importance that fame has in post-industrial society. Therefore, as a secondary objective, this work focuses on the consumption relationships of this specific kind of product, the celebrity. The study case has been done based on the singer Daniel and his fan clubs. In fact, this study has concluded that the emotional commitment of a devoted fan takes place through the process of sacralization of the brand on the individual level. Thus, in the present study, a fan club has not proven to be a generator of affective commitment to the brand. Such is an event that takes place prior to and independently from the grouping process. However, within the boundaries of this study case, fan clubs have shown to be essential to maintain as well to intensify such kind of commitment. By representing the ideal locus to perform proactive sustaining behaviors through rituals, pilgrimage and collective sacrifices, fan clubs keep alive the antecedent that generated fans affective commitment. The intensification of fans commitment through fan clubs occurs due to the fact fan clubs offer sense of community, nurtured both by rituals and by the senses of belonging and of moral responsibility that takes places amongst the members. As a result, it becomes clear that despite of the strategic advantages of a fan club, when created by the marketer, it looses its characteristics of brand community and turns to be a representation of just another relationship and loyalty program, assuming an intrinsic commercial interest. Such fan club does not prove to fully operate as a brand community in view of the fact that, once meanings are attributed by consumers, the marketer does not lead the sacralization process. The fan club, as a brand community, cannot be created or managed by the marketer. However, it may provide support and incentive so that the life cycle of such community is prolonged.

Numerical study of laminar and turbulent flames propagating in a fan-stirred vessel / Étude numérique de la propagation de flammes laminaires et turbulentes dans une enceinte agitée par des ventilateurs

Bonhomme, Adrien 23 May 2014 (has links)
Fossil energy is widely used since the 1900s to satisfy the global increasing energy demand. However, combustion is a process releasing pollutants such as CO2 and NOx. One of the major challenges of the 21th century is to reduce these emissions and car manufacturers are involved in this race. To increase fuel efficiency of piston engines, some technical solutions are developed such as ‘downsizing’. It consists in reducing the engine size while maintaining its performances using a turbocharger to increase the trapped mass in the combustion chamber. Unfortunately, downsizing can lead to abnormal combustions: intense cycle to cycle variations can appear, the fresh mixture can auto-ignite (ignition before spark-plug ignition) leading to knock or rumble. Large Eddy Simulation has proven to be a reliable tool to predict these abnormal combustions in real engines. However, such computations are performed using models to predict the flame propagation in the combustion chamber. Theses models are generally based on correlations derived in cases where turbulence is assumed to be homogeneous and isotropic. Defining theoretically or numerically such a turbulence is a simple task but experimentally it is more challenging. This thesis focuses on a apparatus used in most experimental systems: fans stirred vessel. The objective of this work is twofold: 1. characterize the turbulence generated inside the vessel to check wether it is homogeneous and isotropic or not, 2. finely characterize laminar and turbulent combustion in this setup in order to increase the knowledge in this field, and thereby improve models used. First, a laminar flame propagation study has been conducted to address both confinement and curvature effects on the laminar flame speed in a spherical configuration. The main difficulty to perform the simulation of the whole configuration consists in finding a numerical method able to compute accurately the flow generated by one fan and able to handle six fans simultaneously too. Two numerical methodologies have been tested. First an Immersed Boundaries method was implemented. Despite good results obtained on academic test cases, this method was shown to be unadapted to compute accurately the flow generated by one fan. On the other hand, a numerical approach, coming from turbomachinery calculations and based on code coupling (called MISCOG), demonstrates its ability to do it and it is used to compute the flow generated by the six fans inside the closed vessel. Non-reacting flow is first analyzed and reveals a zone at the vessel center of around 6 cm of diameter where mean velocity is near zero and turbulence is almost homogeneous and isotropic. After that, the premixed fresh mixture is ignited depositing a hot gases kernel at the vessel center and the turbulent propagation phase is analyzed. In particular, it is shown that the amount of energy deposited at ignition is a critical parameter.

Simulation numérique de l'interaction soufflante/nacelle en présence de vent de travers / Numerical simulation of fan/nacelle interaction under crosswind conditions

Sadoudi, Yannis 11 March 2016 (has links)
Inlet design must fulfill geometrical constraints and engine requirements. One of these requirementsis the homogeneity of the flow impacting the fan which is quantified by the distortionlevels of stagnation pressure. When the airplane is on the ground and ready to take-off, crosswindconditions are critical for the distorsion level. The most critical case is when the wind directionis normal to the engine axis. Subsonic and supersonic separations occur near the inlet lip. Theso-created heterogeneity produces an unsteady stress on the fan blades which can lead to surge.Furthermore, short inlets are designed nowadays reducing the distance available for the flow tohomogenize before the fan leading to a coupling between the fan and the separated flow region. The aim of this study is to numerically predict the flow in a short inlet under crosswind conditionsand to investigate the fan influence on the distortion. First of all, the distortion definition isbased on stagnation quantities. Therefore, the stagnation quantities behavior and the numericalparameters influence must be investigated. The behavior of the stagnation quantities near theboundary layer edge is studied with analytical and numerical approaches. The numerical parameterschosen for the inlet simulation come from the so-obtained results obtained. In order tohighlight the fan influence on the distortion, two kinds of simulations were proceeded and comparedto experimental results : an isolated inlet simulation and a inlet/fan simulation. To correctlypredict the distortion, transition has to be be taken into account. Therefore an innovative solutionusing transport equations is used. As the computation cost for the inlet/fan computation isprohibitive, the decoupling which consists in injecting on a isolated fan the distortion obtainedduring a isolated inlet computation, is discussed. In fact, crosswind conditions occur when theairplane is on the ground, thus, the ground influence over the inlet distortion is studied for anisolated inlet. Finally, the distortion criterion used in this study has evidenced some strong defectsand can be questioned. Another approach of measurement with another criterion definitionis investigated.

Reis, Nicole Isabel dos January 2010 (has links)
This research is about the ways through which the public image of gaucho popular artist Vitor Mateus Teixeira, known as Teixeirinha – who passed away in 1985, after a long successful career in Brazil and abroad in the music and cinema business – is built, acknowledged and placed into circulation nowadays. Bringing Mormon Discourse out of the Twilight: Exploring how Fans Recognize, Reflect, Reinterpret, and Resist Multiple Discourses in and around the Seductive Saga

January 2015 (has links)
abstract: ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to explore how LDS (Mormon) fans of Stephenie Meyer's Twilight saga make meanings from the text in the blogging community known as the Bloggernacle. It investigates how fans recognize, reflect, reinterpret, and resist meanings surrounding multiple Big "D" Discourses (Gee, 1999/2010; 2011) in and around the text. It examines the ways in which LDS fans (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) of the Twilight saga use language in order to signify membership in a particular Discourse. In addition, it seeks to understand how LDS fans use language to perform various identities and position themselves and others within the digital space. This dissertation study analyzes the threads of five blogs and three discussion forums using the combined methods of critical ethnography (Carspecken, 1996) and Gee's (1999, 2010;2011) discourse analysis. It concludes, that, while multiple Discourses are present within the conversational threads, mainstream Mormon Discourse remains dominant and normalized within the space, which both informs and limits the interpretations available to Mormon fans. In addition, identity performance is negotiated in the blogs, and members form specific sub-communities within the Bloggernacle so as to create a space for those with distinct ways of believing, valuing, knowing, and identifying. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Curriculum and Instruction 2015

Manual backpack sprayers are widely used in rural properties in Brazil. However, studies that assess their working characteristics, especially spray tip models and working pressure conditions, are scarce. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess how much the working pressure and spray tips influence the distribution quality of phytosanitary spray solutions in manual backpack sprayers. Four spray nozzles (standard flat-fan Magnojet TP110015, turbo flat-fan TeeJet TT110015, hollow-cone TeeJet TXA80015, and disc-core) were assessed in a patternator table at 1, 2, 3, and 4 bar. Distribution profile analyses of sprays were performed by symmetry and the coefficient of variation analyzed by the Tukey’s test (p<0.05). Spray tip models and working pressure influenced in more than 100% the distribution uniformity values of spray solution and in about 50% the useful bandwidth of the phytosanitary treatment. Among the models assessed in this study, the turbo flat-fan spray nozzle presents the best set of characteristics to be indicated for manual backpack sprayers aiming at field phytosanitary treatments.
