[pt] FANDOMS, AFETOS E CIBERESPAÇO: PERSPECTIVAS DE COMUNIDADES POLÍTICAS PARA ALÉM DAS TRADICIONAIS / [en] FANDOMS, AFFECTS AND CYBERSPACE: PERSPECTIVES ON POLITICAL COMMUNITIES BEYOND TRADITIONAL APPROACHES

LUISA DAVI OLIVEIRA DE MESQUITA 20 May 2021 (has links)
[en] This dissertation aims to investigate how traditional theoretical understandings (both in International Relations and in political theory in general) about political communities are challenged in contemporary times, through the point of view of fan communities articulated on the internet (fandoms). Mainstream theoretical approaches postulate that the exemplary political community and the only one that has an impact on politics and should be analysed is the nation-state. The state is treated, by these theories, as a timeless and a-historical entity, natural to the international system. These characteristics draw limits to the forms of imagination of the political community, resulting in implications about the territoriality and link between the state and a nation. These limits to the possible imagination of the political community have been increasingly questioned in IR, including through analyses that denaturalize the state as the only way of organizing political life. The dissertation moves in the same direction, taking fandoms as a point of view. The main argument of the dissertation is that fandoms present challenges to the traditional conceptions of what political communities are, especially through two aspects: territoriality, since fandoms exist on the internet, which is deterritorialized; and nationality, since the emotional attachments that found and maintain the community are to the fan object and other fans.

Heat Transfer Characteristics of Natural Convection within an Enclosure Using Liquid Cooling System.

Gdhaidh, Farouq A.S. January 2015 (has links)
In this investigation, a single phase fluid is used to study the coupling between natural convection heat transfer within an enclosure and forced convection through computer covering case to cool the electronic chip. Two working fluids are used (water and air) within a rectangular enclosure and the air flow through the computer case is created by an exhaust fan installed at the back of the computer case. The optimum enclosure size configuration that keeps a maximum temperature of the heat source at a safe temperature level (85℃) is determined. The cooling system is tested for varying values of applied power in the range of 15−40𝑊. The study is based on both numerical models and experimental observations. The numerical work was developed using the commercial software (ANSYS-Icepak) to simulate the flow and temperature fields for the desktop computer and the cooling system. The numerical simulation has the same physical geometry as those used in the experimental investigations. The experimental work was aimed to gather the details for temperature field and use them in the validation of the numerical prediction. The results showed that, the cavity size variations influence both the heat transfer process and the maximum temperature. Furthermore, the experimental results ii compared favourably with those obtained numerically, where the maximum deviation in terms of the maximum system temperature, is within 3.5%. Moreover, it is seen that using water as the working fluid within the enclosure is capable of keeping the maximum temperature under 77℃ for a heat source of 40𝑊, which is below the recommended electronic chips temperature of not exceeding 85℃. As a result, the noise and vibration level is reduced. In addition, the proposed cooling system saved about 65% of the CPU fan power.

“I Feel so at Home in This Subreddit" : A Netnographic Analysis of the Fan Subreddit r/ThelastofusHBOseries and Its Community-Building Aspects

Penn, Marlene January 2023 (has links)
This thesis examines the online fan community of the HBO series The Last of Us on the social media platform Reddit. Within this study, the fans’ communication practices on the subreddit r/ThelastofusHBOseries are researched and analyzed from a community-building perspective. The subreddit was observed employing a netnographic approach. The observed communicational behavior was divided into categories. The patterns arising from this process were analyzed using discourse analysis and a theoretical framework rooted in fandom, knowledge communities, and uses and gratifications theory.  The research’s results show that the community on r/ThelastofusHBOseries provides a space for fans to connect, share their passion, and engage in meaningful discussions about the show. It embodies convergence culture, the value of mutual knowledge, and participatory practices. The use of insider language, adherence to spoiler etiquette, and organization of regular events further contribute to community building. The subreddit is a valuable platform for fans to exchange interpretations, enrich their reception experience, and foster community belonging. While extensive research has explored fan communities, there is a lack of studies on their online community-building practices. Notably, the subreddit r/ThelastofusHBOseries remains unexplored due to its novelty, alluding to the study’s relevance. Despite the limitations concerning its time frame, missing complementary methods like interviews, and possible sampling bias, the research is still a valuable snapshot, providing significant insights and findings. Future research could thus observe the community’s development over time to examine evolving communication and community building, paying a particular focus to regular events or insider language. Future research would also benefit from complementary methods.
