Beneath the root of memory : the engine of recollection and forgetfulness in the tragedies about Orestes' matricide / Engine of recollection and forgetfulness in the tragedies about Orestes' matricide

The present dissertation deals with the function of memory and forgetfulness within the story of Electra and Orestes, as presented by Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides. The introductory chapter represents a brief account of the philological and theoretical tools of our research. Chapter One proves that words of active memory as well as expressions of forgetfulness are recurrent in the texts. Chapters Two and Three show how different public roles influence the apparatus of memory for various agents. Memory and forgetfulness operate at three levels: private recollection, public function, and divine agent. We analyze the relationship between the heroic ethos and the collective memory in times of crisis. The three authors treat differently the Electra’s memory and her relationship with the logos of her city, especially because of her liminal tendencies. In Euripideas, we further emphasize a particular aspect of memory: a genos-related aspect of Mnēmosynē that affects both the male and the female functions. Chapter Four further analyzes the feminine liminal potential and the ability to access a transcendental form of memory, ability which at times proves morbid and dangerous. The solution to this burden is either divine intervention, or return to private memory through acts of initiatory forgetfulness. Chapter Five deals with the presence of divine memory and the fissures between the Olympians and the chthonian divinities at the level of mnemonic discourse. The three authors have different ways in recording it. However, there is a general tendency to move from grudging memory to healing amnesty. This effort is sustained by the Olympian divinities in the detriment of the Furies and their pre-cultural form of memory in Aeschylus. The picture is further complicated in Euripides by Helen and her physical presence as a memorial of the war, as well as her ultimate disappearance into thin air. In Sophocles, we witness a similar movement from the "logocentric" memory to the visual and symbolic aspect of social Mnēmosynē. Electra depicts the ambiguities and the failure of monumental memory and the ritualistic return to private memory. Chapter Six analyzes the mnemonic filter in theatrical experience. The dramatic performance is a way to share the social burden of memory: with each show, Orestes' murder is re-tried and collectively re-solved. Beside the memory of the author, the theatrical experience involves the perspective of the public and its function as a “social framework” for the memory of the myths. / text

[pt] Com base em um conceito internacionalizado e crítico da justiça de transição, derivado de normas e práticas internacionais, buscou-se, neste trabalho, analisar as medidas tomadas pelo Estado brasileiro no intuito de lidar com as graves violações de direitos humanos cometidas durante o regime militar de 1964 a 1985. Considerando a justiça de transição brasileira um processo em aberto, que tem início na Lei de Anistia de 1979 (Lei 6.683), dedicou-se em traçar um panorama sobre os principais momentos e os atuais desafios desse processo. Ao longo da análise, a luta entre uma política pública de esquecimento e a memória de um passado ausente permeia o debate e promove o desenvolvimento, através de avanços e retrocessos, da justiça de transição no país. / [en] Based on an internationalized and critical concept of transitional justice, deriving from international norms and practices, this dissertation proposed to analyze the Brazilian State s actions taken in order to investigate the accountability of the serious human rights violations committed during the military regime from 1964 to 1985. Considering the Brazilian transitional justice as an open process, that started with the 1979 Amnesty Law (Law 6.683), this work is dedicated to give an overview of the key moments and the current challenges of this process. Throughout the analysis, the struggle between a public policy of forgetting and the memory of an absent past permeates the debate and promotes the development, through ups and downs, of transitional justice in Brazil.

What is forgetfulness? How does it show? Is it a part of memory or can it be considered on its own? In the philosophical discourse forgetfulness is limited and the phenomenon is mostly portrayed as a pathological or obscure counterpart of memory. This portraying of forgetfulness can be seen as traditional way of describing it, but there is some philosophers who has spoken of forgetfulness in more fruitful ways. These ways are not to be interpreted as aspirations to decouple forgetfulness from memory, rather they are to be seen as attempts to interpret this relation on another basis. This basis has also led this essay towards an interpretation of forgetfulness' relation to truth. The aim of this essay is thereby to examine forgetfulness as phenomenon and its relation to truth. To approach these subject-matters I've taken Paul Ricoeur's Memory, History, Forgetting and Martin Heidegger's Being and Time to my help. In Memory, History, Forgetting Ricoeur tries to portray forgetfulness as an essential part of human life that's not a deficiency, but nor is it intended to be seen as an incentive to forget. We are rather encouraged to remember, thereof his watchword “the obligation to remember” which is also linked to “the truth status of memory”. Heidegger too considers forgetfulness in Being and Time as an essential part of the human life, or as he writes, of everydayness. Remarkably, Heidegger's translations of the greek words lēthē and its privation alētheia are translatable by him as the words for forgetfulness (concealment) and truth (unconcealment). This opens up a view on forgetfulness and truth as radically different from Ricoeur's and thereof the traditional. The disparity between the two philosophers allows this relation to point beyond the two of them as a possibility and a necessity to make room for forgetfulness as a multifaceted phenomenon in the philosophical discourse.

It investigates the relations between memory and forgetfulness from the Teachers Training Program of Universidade Federal da Bahia-UFBA (Federal University of Bahia/College of Education) in partnership with municipal government of Irecê and Tapiramutá/BA, known as Irecê Project. The research seeks to present conceptual and theoretical issues related to forgetfulness, as well as the discussion of the place of forgetfulness in Irecê Pedagogy Course Project. We will highlight the concept of forgetfulness in Nietzsche´s Philosophy. Forgetfulness is understood as activity, an enabling force of the new, symbolizing a strong health form and seen like a plastic force. This concept will be related to other one that is essential to understanding the sense of activity, based on authors as Ricoeur and Freud. The bibliographic research was based on references about memories,autobiographies, and forgetfulness. It was inscribed in a qualitative approach of phenomenological and existential basis, for the interpretative analysis of the sources (memorials, diaries of cycles, e-mails, evaluative opinions, etc.) and it is presented to the taxonomy of oblivion with eight dimensions. Educator´s formation in this perspective involves multiple references that made up her/his knowledge and his/her know-how throughout the existence of each being-in-the-world, as a process of creation that inaugurates new possibilities of life and formation in a authentic culture that is in a constant and singular becoming in the forgetting and remembering art. O objetivo principal desta tese é caracterizar os TOTs, ancorados pelos princípios teóricos-metodológicos da abordagem histórico-cultural, que caracterizam a Neurolinguística de orientação enunciativo-discursiva. Este objetivo central se relaciona a outros, mais específicos, tais como (i) discutir e dar visibilidade à relação constitutiva das funções superiores, sobretudo à relação entre linguagem-memória; (ii) contribuir para o desenvolvimento de uma metodologia qualitativa dos TOTs; e, por fim, (iii) compreender as estratégias de busca da palavra desejada, contribuindo não só para entender aspectos do funcionamento lexical envolvido nos TOTs, mas também para subsidiar o trabalho desenvolvido no contexto clínico-terapêutico com sujeitos afásicos. Para atingir estes objetivos, dialogamos com as ideias de diversos autores, dentre os quais: i) Luria e Vygotsky, principalmente com relação ao que juntos desenvolvem no campo da Neuropsicologia, ii) Bakhtin e seu Círculo, no campo da Filosofia da Linguagem, e iii) Jakobson, na Linguística, além dos autores que se dedicam mais especificamente ao campo da Neurolinguística. A maior parte dos estudos descritos na literatura sobre os TOTs partem de expedientes empíricos, cujo resultados são analisados quantitativamente. Nesta tese, contrapomos tais estudos às primeiras reflexões sobre o tema, com destaque para aquelas de Willian James, Robert Woodworth e Sigmund Freud. Também propomos formas alternativas de estudar os TOTs, desenvolvendo diferentes procedimentos qualitativos, que, ao nosso ver, nos permitem avançar na caracterização dos TOTs como eventos enunciativos e dialógicos. Para isso, nos dedicamos às reflexões que relacionam os TOTs às funções psicológicas superiores, trazendo questões acerca dos signos e de sua natureza dialógica, assim como questões que relacionam linguagem e ideologia. Para finalizar, articulamos os principais pontos desta tese à dimensão ética implicada no trabalho terapêutico no campo da linguagem, indicando as possíveis estratégias que podem ser desenvolvidas no cotidiano clínico, visando minimizar os sofrimentos dos sujeitos afásicos quando se deparam com impossibilidade de seu querer-dizer / Abstract: Known in the field literature as "tip of the tongue", herein after "TOT", this phenomenon refers to the state when someone searches for a word, accompanied by the feeling that it will soon come or that it has already gone, which explains the use of the metaphor that the word is on "the tip of the tongue". The main goal of this thesis is to characterize the TOT phenomenon on the basis of theoretical-methodological principles of the historical-cultural approach, which underlie enunciative-discursive Neurolinguistics. This core task relates to other more specific ones, including: (1) to discuss and give visibility to the constitutive relationship among the higher functions, especially that between language and memory; (ii) to contribute to the development of a qualitative methodology of TOTs; and, finally, (iii) to understand the search strategies of the target word, contributing not only to understand aspects of lexical processes involved in TOTs, but also to support the work in the clinical and therapeutic context with aphasic subjects. To achieve these goals, we dialogue with the ideas of several authors, among whom: i) Luria and Vygotsky, particularly regarding the work they have developed together in the field of Neuropsychology; ii) Bakhtin and his Circle, in the field of Philosophy of Language; and iii) Jakobson, in Linguistics, in addition to the authors who have dedicated their studies to the field of Neurolinguistics. Most of the published studies on TOTs are founded on empirical grounds and present results analyzed quantitatively. In this thesis, we confront such studies with pioneer research carried out by William James, Robert Woodworth and Sigmund Freud. We also propose alternative ways of studying TOTs, developing different qualitative procedures which, in our view, allow for advances in the characterization of a TOT as a dialogical event. We aim to relate TOTs to higher psychological functions keeping account of the dialogic nature of signs and of the relation between language and ideology. Finally, we correlate the main points of this thesis to the ethical dimension of therapeutic work in the field of language, indicating possible strategies in the clinical context to minimize the sufferings of aphasic individuals when faced with the impossibility of their speech-will / Doutorado / Linguistica / Doutor em Linguística

Este trabalho aborda questões relacionadas ao esquecimento e à lembrança em narrativas de ficção e de testemunho da escritora Lygia Fagundes Telles. Tendo como base teórica pressupostos de Sigmund Freud, a intenção é discutir elementos preponderantes em torno do esquecimento associado à culpa, nos contos \"Helga\" e \"Natal na barca\"; ao \"estranho\" e \"inexplicável\" nos contos \"A caçada\" e \"O noivo\", e, finalmente, a lembrança nostálgica verificada tanto no romance As horas nuas quanto no testemunho \"Nada de novo na frente ocidental\". Com isso, se enfatiza que a autora expõe em sua obra uma problemática em torno da memória, do esquecer e do lembrar. / This work approaches questions related to forgetfulness and memory in fictional and memoir narratives by writer Lygia Fagundes Telles. Using as theoretical base Sigmund Freud\'s assumptions, the intention is to argue about preponderant elements around the forgetfulness associated with guilty, in the short stories \"Helga\" and \"Natal na barca\"; to the \"strange\" and the \"inexplicable\" in short stories \"A caçada\" and \"O noivo\", and, finally, the remembering nostalgic verified in the novel As horas nuas and in the memoir \"Nada de novo na frente ocidental.\" So, it is emphasized that the author displays in her work an issue of memory, forgetting and remembering.

A dissertação é dividida em duas partes. A primeira consiste em um estudo sobre a noção de escuta acusmáticano cinema, levando em conta suas origens eletroacústicas e algumas de suas aplicações na ecologia acústica e na teoria cinematográfica. O enfoque privilegia as definições formuladas pelos teóricos, Pierre Schaeffer nos anos 50, Murray Schafer nos anos 70 e Michel Chion entre os anos 80 a 2000. A segunda parte da dissertação, mais fincada na análise fílmica, aborda alguns elementos da poética de Lucrecia Martel, dentre eles apontamos o uso do som para representação do tempo e de figurações do corpo. Designamos um conjunto de estados sensoriais e do pensamento como a fadiga, o cansaço, o esgotamento, o esquecimento e a inércia que ocupam um ponto importante em relação às análises dos filmes de Lucrecia Martel, apontadas por alguns críticos do cinema argentino. / The thesis is divided in two parts. The first one investigates the concept of acousmatic listening as applied to film practice, taking into account its eletroacoustic origins and some of its extensions to film theory and acoustic ecology. The approach privileges the definitions presented by theorists Pierre Schaeffer in the 1950s, Murray Schafer in the 70s and Michel Chion from the 80\'s to 2000. The second part, concentrated on film analysis, discusses some elements of Lucrecia Martel poetics, among which the use of sound is pointed out for representations of time and body figurations. A set of sensorial and thought states is designated, including fatigue, tiredness, exhaustion, forgetfulness and inertia, that play an important role regarding the analysis of Lucrecia Martel\'s films, as pointed out by some critics of the new Argentinean cinema.

Guerra do Paraguai: os caminhos da memória entre a comemoração e o esquecimento / Paraguayan War: the memory paths between celebration and forgetfulness

Em 01 de março de 1870 a Guerra do Paraguai estava terminada. Para conter o inimigo em suas fronteiras, o Brasil precisou mobilizar o Exército, a Guarda Nacional e criar corpos de Voluntários da Pátria. Durante cinco anos o cenário político e social se modificou e, raro era a família que não teve um filho, irmão, pai, esposo, parente ou amigo lutado no Paraguai. Terminada a campanha as tropas regressaram para o Brasil. Controvérsias entre o governo de D. Pedro II, a imprensa liberal e parlamentares da câmara e do senado, em relação à recepção das tropas no Brasil, provocaram acalorados debates. Tratava-se da disputa entre comemorar e esquecer. Nessa tese percorremos os caminhos da memória da Guerra do Paraguai e para isso transitamos pelas ruas embandeiradas da Corte e das capitais das províncias para narrar os festejos populares e oficiais na recepção dos servidores da pátria recebidos com regozijo, lágrimas, flores e poesias pela população que rendia homenagens aos filhos defensores da honra nacional. No dia 10 de julho de 1870, o governo de D. Pedro II realizou no Rio de Janeiro a festa oficial, a festa do barracão, para comemorar a vitória do Brasil e lembrar os mortos e assim encerrar um capítulo da história pátria que tantas vidas deixaram no solo Paraguaio. Assistimos do alto da tribuna parlamentar a disputa pela memória da guerra de onde Caxias e o Conde D´Eu protagonizaram essa disputa. Transitamos pelas ruas de Niterói, Salvador, Recife e São Paulo e do Desterro, onde soldados doentes e mutilados, egressos dos campos paraguaios, mendigavam, provocavam desordens públicas e davam-se em espetáculos. Nas províncias encontramos as viúvas e órfãos que em súplicas ao rei pediam o pão pela perda do arrimo de família. Nas secretarias do governo, nas salas dos presidentes de províncias e nas redações de importantes jornais, era grande o volume de ofícios e petições requerendo o pagamento de indenização ao governo. Veteranos da campanha reivindicavam soldos atrasados, lote de terras, empregos públicos, condecorações e títulos honoríficos. Nas prisões públicas encontramos ex-escravos reconduzidos ao cativeiro pelos seus senhores. Na ilha de Bom Jesus percorremos o suntuoso edifício do Asilo dos Inválidos, um lugar de ressentimento. Assim, a história que procuramos narrar, transita por dois caminhos: o da comemoração e o do esquecimento / The Paraguay War finished on the 1st of March, 1870. In order to keep the enemies within their frontiers, Brazil needed to mobilize the Army and the National Guard. Also, a group of Volunteers was formed. The political and social scenery changed thoroughly during the 5 years of war, and almost all family had a member a son, a brother, a husband or a friend fighting in Paraguay. The troops returned to Brazil after the bloody campaign. A lot of debate was promoted by controversies between the govern of D. Pedro II, the liberal press and members of the senate regarding the reception of the troops in Brazil. It was a dispute between commemorating and forgetting. In this thesis, we follow the paths that lead to the memory of the war in Paraguay: the adorned streets of Rio de Janeiro as well as the provinces capitals, so as to report both the popular and official parties that received the volunteers with relief, tears, flowers and poetry. On July 10th 1870, an official party, known as Festa do Barracão was held in Rio de Janeiro, to celebrate the victory of Brazilian troops and to remember those who died at war, finishing a sad, violent chapter of the national history. We analyzed the dispute between Count DEu and the Duke of Caxias for the memory of the war. We also walked through the streets of Niterói, Salvador, Recife, São Paulo and Desterro, where sick and mutilated soldiers, ex-combatants of the war, turned into mendicants, provoking public disorders and riots. In the provinces far from Rio, we met the widowers and orphans who begged the imperial government for bread. In the secretaries of government, in the offices of province presidents and at important press centers, a huge volume of petitions and pleads required refunds and compensations. Veteran military men applied for belated payments, earth, public jobs, honorific titles etc. In public prisons, ex-slaves were taken back to captivity by their old masters. In Bom Jesus Island, we walked around and through the sumptuous building of the Invalids Asylum, a place full of resentment. The story we want to tell walks, thus, in two simultaneous paths: commemoration and forgetfulness.
