Attitudes Toward Homosexuality at Private Colleges

Medley, Christopher L. 14 September 2005 (has links)
Research examining college students' attitudes toward homosexuality has been consistently reported as generally negative (Herek, 1984a; Malaney, Williams, & Geller, 1997; & Mohr & Sedlacek, 2000). Furthermore, the attitudes of heterosexual college males have reflected higher levels of negativity when compared to their female counterparts (D'Augelli & Rose, 1991; Kite, 1984; & Smith & Gordon, 1998). The ensuing literature review examines research studies conducted at large, small, public, and private institutions. The purpose of this study is to investigate attitudes toward gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people from the point of view of heterosexual males who attend private institutions. The literature in regards to private institutional campus setting is very limited. Data was collected through the dissemination of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender (GLBT) Attitude Assessment at four private colleges. The administration of the instrument was conducted through a designated coordinator and through facilitators who agreed to participate. Descriptive data, including means, standard deviation and histograms, were collected. In addition, the research study used four methods of inferential statistics: (1) within-subjects ANOVA, (2) t-tests with a Bonferroni adjusted alpha, (3) within-subjects ANOVA with one between-subjects variable, and (4) the post-hoc Ryan Procedure. All statistical tests were performed using an alpha level of .05 unless otherwise stated. The GLBT Attitude Assessment included the GLBT Far Proximity Scale and GLBT Close Proximity Scale. While the GLBT Far Proximity Scale indicated no mean difference from males toward the subgroups, the statistical analysis conducted on the GLBT Close Proximity Scale did indicate a mean difference. In addition, males who held conservative beliefs in their political and religious orientations were significantly different than those who held liberal and moderate beliefs. Respondents' differences presented in this study were within the neutral range, however, they had negative and positive trends. For example, the respondents' attitudes were least positive toward transgender people. / Master of Arts

Butch Bottoms, Nancy Boys, and Muscle Queens: Examining Hypermasculine Behavior and Sexual Health among Gay and Bisexual Men.

Snipes, Daniel 01 January 2016 (has links)
Masculinity has been widely regarded as a harmful cognition that may lead men to engage in risk behavior. The present study sought to examine the role of hyper masculine cognitions and behaviors on sexual health in a sample of gay and bisexual men. A sample of n=313 gay and bisexual men were sampled from the community. Results indicate significant effects of hyper masculine behaviors and hyper masculine cognitions on sexual health variables. Moreover, engaging in risky sexual situations fully mediated effects of hyper masculine behavior on high-risk sexual behavior. Results are discussed with a focus on ego depletion and hegemonic masculinity.

Os sujeitos-gays nas tramas da(s) rede(s): o discurso sobre os aplicativos de relacionamento / Gay subjects in social network(s): the discourse on dating applications

Bastos, Gustavo Grandini 08 June 2018 (has links)
The use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) by gay subjects to produce new sociability processes in contemporary times has been emphasized in the approaches carried out in a series of discursive spaces, resulting in analyses and works of numerous areas and theoretical perspectives. In this paper, based on the analytical, methodological and theoretical assumptions of French Discourse Analysis (Pêcheux, 1997a, 1997b, 2010, 2014), we aim to investigate how gay subjects and the dating applications aimed at them are addressed in the journalistic discourses produced by the press made available online. We sought to analyze discourses and meanings produced on gay subjects who make use of such applications, in a corpus composed of 37 journalistic texts, published in the period of 2010-2015 and issued by four spaces of news associated with the countrys large media groups (Folha de S. Paulo, O Estado de S. Paulo, Portal G1 e Portal IG). We have selected materials that cover the three main dating applications used in Brazil: Grindr, Hornet and Scruff. The work with journalistic discourses allows us to observe that the current approach on gay subjects and spaces related to them differs from the one carried out in a recent past. These changes are produced as a result of socio-historical transformations in contemporary times. The relationships of gay subjects with such applications are approached in journalistic spaces and presented to reader subjects of the news spaces, inscribing meanings about their appearance, modes of operation and uses. We have identified that journalistic discourses on gay subjects concerning the use of applications are not restricted to the approach on new forms of sociability. Such a discussion is presented and highlights how the forms of encounter go through changes, either in the search for serious relationships, friendships or casual sex. Also, other important aspects are made clear, e.g. the ease involving the transmission of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD), the importance of gay subjects to the current economic structure, and modifications in the urban space through the use of such technologies. Dating applications interfere with the way gay subjects find and establish relationships, which is connected to the current conditions of production in the contemporary times, producing new meanings about such subjects and the spaces related to them.

Villanueva Jordán, Iván 30 October 2019 (has links)

Partner-Objectification and Relationship Satisfaction in Gay Male Relationships

Donaldson, Kerry Sue 01 January 2019 (has links)
Objectification theory explains how media-driven ideals can be internalized and lead to the development of eating disorders, poor body image, depression, anxiety, a desire to achieve a thin ideal, and lowered rates of relationship satisfaction. Research on objectification theory, until recently, has focused primarily on a female population and heterosexual couples. As nontraditional sexual identities have become more accepted in society, media influences have begun to impact other populations, including the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender community. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of these media-driven ideals on a gay male population and determine how objectification may lead to lower rates of relationship satisfaction. A multiple linear regression analysis was used in this study to determine if the predictor variables of self-objectification, partner-objectification, socioeconomic status, race/ethnicity, and education adequately predict the criterion variable of relationship satisfaction in a sample of 81 gay males. Results of the study support the theory that higher levels of reported objectification predicted relationship satisfaction. In other words, the more a gay male objectified himself, the less satisfied he was in romantic relationships. The findings of this study are significant because this is one of the first studies to investigate this topic among a gay male population. The results speak to the impact that media-driven messages can have on an individual, not only in terms of self-concept, but in terms of how those beliefs impact relationship satisfaction. In terms of positive social change, the results may allow for more education at younger ages to teach adolescents the impact of objectification.
