Previous issue date: 2018-01-05 / The increase of human longevity is bringing a greater possibility of coexistence between the generations of the same family. Often, due to several factors that will be presented throughout this dissertation, the number of children who return to their paternal home has also increased, bringing their own children, a phenomenon known as recohabitation. With the growth of these multigenerational households, many seniors are the heads of the family and support their children, grandchildren and even great-grandchildren. This type of family arrangement can both be a source of support and mutual help, as well as of conflicts and tensions. In this context, the present study had as general objective to understand how the elderly, who are grandmothers and reside in multigenerational households, from the recohabitation by the children, experience and perceive this situation. This is a qualitative research involving nine elderly women living in the city of Vitória de Santo Antão/PE. These participants answered a sociodemographic questionnaire and a semi-structured interview. The interview was recorded, transcribed and later analyzed according to the thematic content analysis technique. The results showed that: 1) the main reason that mobilized the recohabitation was the separation/divorce of the children; 2) the majority of the elderly women had a feeling of satisfaction and conformity with the recohabitation, due to the idea that the mother should always welcome her children and grandchildren at home; 3) the return of the children and grandchildren to the maternal home caused changes both in the physical structure of the house and in the daily life of the elderly, with the addition of domestic tasks and commitments in the care of the grandchildren; 4) most of the participants considered themselves the person who establishes the norms of home functioning; 5) co-residence is not a guarantee of a friendly relationship between the generations; 6) the greatest difficulties cited were the differences regarding the education of the grandchildren, the increase of domestic responsibilities and the rebellion of the grandchildren; 7) the elderly indicated the company of their children and grandchildren as the main benefit of recohabitation; 8) expectations for themselves involve being healthy and willing to work, while for the children they have expressed a desire to remarry and for the grandchildren to continue their studies; 9) the recohabitation reflected the preference of some elderly women, due to the satisfaction of being closer to their children and grandchildren, in other cases it was perceived that it was a lack of choice, due to the feeling of "maternal obligation" to receive their children. Thus, the results highlight the need to cultivate affection bonds that support conflict resolution in this type of family arrangement, as well as strengthen intergenerational relationships.

Současná rodina dítěte předškolního věku a volný čas / Today's Family of a Pre-School Child and Free Time ActivitiesKdýrová, Petra January 2011 (has links)
A family has an invaluable significance for a child of preschool age. It is a basic factor that determines his overall development and nature of free time activities. One of the most important activities are the shared activities of the child and his parents or grandparents, who play an important role in raising of preschool children and showing him a meaningful use of free time. The choice of free time activities should be appropriate to the child's age and should be based on their needs, abilities and skills. The activities should be interesting, varied, from different areas and should have the character of a play. The main way for children to spend free time should be a game. My research has shown that most of the mothers spend more time with their child than the father, with the largest difference occurring during working days. The range of activities reported by parents was greater than those reported by children, but there was a good agreement in the predominantly indicated plays and physical activities. Among the parents' predominant activities were also full-time activities outside the working day. The vast majority of parents indicated that grandparents spend time with the child at least once in 14 days and that they participate in his upbringing. Children also reported that they play with...

[en] DELICACIES, AFFECTIONS, CHILDHOODS: GRANDPARENTS, GRANDCHILDREN AND THEIR STORIES / [pt] DELICADEZAS, AFETOS, INFÂNCIAS: AVÓS, NETOS E SUAS HISTÓRIASLIANA GARCIA CASTRO 22 March 2022 (has links)
pesquisa, as análises e as conclusões. / [en] Delicacies, affections, childhoods: grandparents, grandchildren and their stories had as
general objective to analyze meanings built about childhood from narratives of
grandmothers/grandfathers and grandchildren who have strong bonds with each
other. The research deals with childhood in this intergenerational relationship,
understanding it not only as a stage of life, but also as a human dimension, which can
meet us at any age. It investigated if and how the relationship between
grandmothers/grandfathers and grandchildren is potent to revive childhoods in adults
and children. Walter Benjamin and Martin Buber were the main theoretical
interlocutors, as well as scholars of their works and authors from different areas. With
contributions from anthropology, especially from Tim Ingold, its methodology
consisted mainly in sharing presence, caring, letting oneself be affected and learning.
Seven grandmothers and three grandfathers participated in the research, between fiftyone and seventy-one years of age, residents of the city of Rio de Janeiro and one from
Niterói. And six of his grandchildren, aged between five and twelve, live in the
following cities: Rio de Janeiro, Niterói, Brasília and Montevideo/Uruguay. The
criterion for choosing was familiarity, based on indications from grandmothers and
grandfathers with strong bonds built with their grandchildren up to twelve years old.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the context of this study and the theme of the
participants narratives, the fieldwork was carried out between May and December
2020, through interactions on digital means - Zoom platform and WhatsApp
application. With the grandmothers and grandfathers, individual meetings were
planned. With the grandchildren, conversation was collective. The categories
childhood and time, childhood and bonding, childhood and authority, childhood and
care emerge from the narratives, and they guide the presentation of the research, the
analysis and the conclusions.

I no longer feel alone': meeting the needs of bereaved grandparents through a children's hospice support groupTatterton, Michael J., Lyon, J.A. 02 December 2020 (has links)
Yes / Children's hospices provide a range of family-centred care services, including bereavement support. Not all hospices provide specific services for grandparents.
To explore how a hospice-based bereavement support group supported grandparents in their grief following the death of a grandchild.
Methods: Grandparents attending a group were invited to complete an anonymous
questionnaire. Questionnaires from eight groups, run between 2015 and 2019 were collated and interpreted to identify themes.
Findings: 121 grandparents attended the groups; 113 returned the questionnaires (93% response). Three central themes were identified: environment and space, being with people who understand, and the opportunity to hear the stories of others. Grandparents valued hearing the stories of others, providing an opportunity to reflect on the experience of others.
Conclusion: Grandparents felt supported and validated by the group. The facilitated sessions increased coping and resilience of participants, enabling grandparents to support their partner, adult children and surviving grandchildren more effectively.

Empowering grandprents who fulfil the role of parents in the context of the HIV/AIDS pandemic : a psycho-educational perspectiveWood, Cecil James 02 1900 (has links)
This study firstly investigates the prevalence of HIV/AIDS and the resulting deaths from an international, African and South African perspective. These statistics provide a backdrop to the phenomenon of grandparent-headed households. The needs of orphans and the characteristics of grandparent-headed households are explained. The researcher describes the services offered to these households by a number of supporting agencies internationally and in South Africa. Erik Erikson’s model of psychosocial development is used as a structure to explain childhood grieving during the various psychosocial development stages, including adolescence. The views and experiences of a number of South African grandparent-headed households are described as well as the views of stakeholders offering support to these families. Lastly the researcher offers guidelines to professionals and lay people who endeavour to empower grandparents who fulfil the role of parents in the context of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. / Educational Studies / M. Guidelines for support of orphaned and vulnerable children being cared for by their grandparents in the informal settlements of Mbabane, SwazilandMkhonta, Nkosazana Ruth 11 1900 (has links)
The AIDS pandemic has generated a large number of orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC) in Swaziland, as it affects the reproductive age group. Most of the OVC are being cared for by their grandparents who are old, poor and suffer from degenerating diseases of old age. The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the needs and support available for OVC under the care of grandparents in the informal settlements of Mbabane, Swaziland in order to develop guidelines for their care and support. A qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and contextual study was conducted to identify the needs of the OVC and type of support provided by organizations for these children. Data was collected using unstructured and semi-structured interviews.
The study was conducted in three phases each addressing a research objective. In the first phase which was to identify the needs of OVC, twelve grandparents who cared for OVC in the informal settlements participated. For the second phase seven managers of organizations that provide support to OVC in the informal settlements participated. The third phase was the development of guidelines by the researcher and validated by participants and experts. The study highlighted the needs of OVC, the nature of the existing support structure and type of support provided by organizations for these children. The findings revealed that the OVC have developmental support, protection support, psychosocial support and support for survival needs. The themes identified from the analysis of the type of support provided by organizations were developmental, partnership, protection, psychosocial and support for survival needs. The organizations' support was inconsistent and inadequate to meet these needs due to the large number of OVC. Some
of the weaknesses of organizations were indicated as donor dependency and lack of coordination and collaboration among organizations. The study highlighted partnership as fundamental to the successful implementation of the guidelines. / Health Studies / D. Litt. et Phil. (Health Studies)
