Cascading CurtainMap: An Interactive Visualization for Depicting Large and Flexible Hierarchies

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: In visualizing information hierarchies, icicle plots are efficient diagrams in that they provide the user a straightforward layout for different levels of data in a hierarchy and enable the user to compare items based on the item width. However, as the size of the hierarchy grows large, the items in an icicle plot end up being small and indistinguishable. In this thesis, by maintaining the positive characteristics of traditional icicle plots and incorporating new features such as dynamic diagram and active layer, we developed an interactive visualization that allows the user to selectively drill down or roll up to review different levels of data in a large hierarchy, to change the hierarchical structure to detect potential patterns, and to maintain an overall understanding of the current hierarchical structure. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Computer Science 2014

Sobczyk, Inez January 2010 (has links)
Medieteknik is a department at Malmo University that on a daily basis struggles with being an innovative and developing part of a bigger organization. This creates possibilities, as well as limitations. The universities demands, together with the ever-changing world, forces the department to vary between structure, planning, implementation – and – development, innovation of content, range and pedagogy. The purpose of this essay is to examine how to create an innovative and creative environmental development within an organization/public authority. The use of a questionnaire creates the essays empirical material, which, together with the study of the universities conditions, as well as with the support of the theoretical reference, answers the question at issue: Which conditions can affect a department to work and act in an innovative way, within the boundaries of the bigger organizationsrule and demands? The conclusion is that Malmo University is constantly faced with a number of contradictory demands that require balance within the organisation, so that work on department level is to function efficiently. This because the bigger organization creates conditions for medieteknik, which currently do not function in an effective way, and hence create a weak link within different fields.Amongst other things there should exist better participation between the department and Malmo University, as well as more specific guidelines for the employees. Better support for the interactionbetween the identified demands of structure and innovation should be given. The development of research would benefit of the departments involvement, and is a recommendation, alongside with strategic discussion.

Admissions policy of students into Malawi secondary schools

Sandikonda, Victor Chinyamah 16 April 2014 (has links)
In Malawi the future of a child in terms of academic achievement is known before a child completes a higher secondary education. This is determined by the type of secondary school a child has been selected to. The secondary schools in Malawi are classified into three types namely the grant aided, secondary schools, the district conventional secondary schools and the community day secondary schools. When a pupil has been selected to a grant aided secondary school the general public expectation is that such a student would achieve a high academic standard, similarly when a pupil has been selected to the community day secondary school the public expectation is that such a pupil would not achieve a high academic standard. On the other hand those who are selected to attend the district conventional secondary schools will have an academic achievement which is between the other two types of secondary schools. This research was carried out to find out the impact of the ADMISSIONS POLICY OF STUDENTS INTO MALAWI SECONDARY SCHOOLS by examining the factors which contribute to disparities in academic achievements from the three types of secondary schools. The study was carried out in Dowa District in the Central Region of Malawi. Specifically it was conducted in the Central East Education Division which is comprised of five education districts namely: Dowa, Ntchisi, Nkhotakota, Salima and Kasungu. The research was conducted using a number of methods namely: survey questionnaires, convenient sampling, interviews and snowballing. Through the research it was established that the grant aided secondary schools offer excellence of education where many students excel in academics and is seconded by the district conventional secondary schools, while the community day secondary schools offer poor education which attributes to poor academic achievement. The research has explained what has been responsible for the differences in academic achievement. / Public Administration & Management / MPA

Reality TV's "queen of all :" genre, transgression, and hierarchy in Here Comes Honey Boo Boo

Hicks, Shannon Nicole 18 November 2014 (has links)
This thesis examines the reality television (RTV) series Here Comes Honey Boo Boo (HCHBB) as a rhetorical text in and through which the cultural significance of race, class, and gender stereotypes—and the meanings they hold for different individuals and groups—are actively contested and negotiated. I argue that recurrent themes of symbolic transgression of hierarchical structures in HCHBB operate as a modality through which cast and audience(s) alike might make or interpret potentially subversive/resistant meanings. This focus on the RTV series as a dynamic site for making and contesting meaning—rather than a static text encoded/decoded by members of the discrete categories of producers and consumers—enables critical attention to the discursive and affective elements at work in HCHBB without forsaking analysis of the political and material frames in which they circulate. These frames are explored throughout a brief history of the RTV genre and an overview of the scholarship that has engaged it. Ultimately, I argue that while HCHBB and the genre of RTV may potentially provide the opportunity to challenge class antagonism and discrimination, it also perpetuates structural, material inequality. By linking themes of symbolic transgression as they operate in and through the text with Kenneth Burke’s (1969) analysis of hierarchy and mystification of class relations, I show how HCHBB doubly participates in the stratification of economic class when symbolic transgression is offered as an affront to social class morality rather than pervasive structural, material inequality. Despite an ethos of rebellion against bourgeois norms, HCHBB displaces rather than cultivates critical class consciousness by encouraging performances of redneck identity which also consign the Shannon/Thompson family to their fate as working class celebrities. / text

An evaluation of management techniques for SONET/SDH Telecommunication networks

Lim, Wee Shoong 09 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited / A study of SONET network management applications and the load they impart to the network is conducted to provide a better understanding of the capability of various management approaches. In this study, a SONET network is set up in the Advanced Networking Laboratory of the Naval Postgraduate School using four Cisco ONS 15454s. Next, two Element Management Systems, the Cisco Transport Controller and the Cisco Transport Manager, are deployed onto the SONET network. Subsequently, the network traffic of the Element Management Systems is captured and analyzed using a packet analyzer. Link utilization of the two tools is computed using the first-order statistics of the captured traffic distributions. In addition, the Hurst parameter is estimated using the variance-index plot technique (which uses higher-orders statistics of the modeled distributions) to determine the captured traffic's degree of self-similarity. Finally, the calculated utilization is extrapolated to obtain the link utilization for 2500 network elements (the maximum number supported by the Cisco Transport Manager). The result obtained is useful in determining the maximum number of network elements (Cisco ONS 15454s) that the Cisco Transport Manager can support from a network loading point of view. / Civilian, Ministry of Defense, Singapore

[en] THE CONSTRUCTION OF DISCURSIVE AND SOCIAL IDENTITIES REGARDING THE INTERRELATED SPEED PRODUCED BY A FAMILY FROM BRASÍLIA / [pt] CONSTRUÇÃO DAS IDENTIDADES SOCIAIS E DISCURSIVAS NA FALA-EM-INTERAÇÃO DE UMA FAMÍLIA BRASILIENSE

AGENILDA DAMASCENO VIEIRA 08 April 2009 (has links)
[en] The present research aims at studying the construction of discursive and social identities regarding the interrelated speech produced by a family from Brasília. The goals intended to be attained consist at showing: the way each person / participant, playing their interrelated role, produce interrelated speech; how identities are built in the relationship between the self and the other; how personal and group identities are uttered in the family context. The theoretical support resides between the Interrelated Sociolinguistics and an interrelated sociocultural conception on discursive and social identities. The methodology is the ethnographic microanalysis of qualitative and interpretative nature, and based upon linguistics analysis of face-to-face written out interactions, as well as in research interviews. The analysis focuses; the interactional conflict that is established between father and daughter in interactional events; the family members personal identities that are built in the relationship with each other; the family identities considered as a social group. The results indicate that the participants use means which change the family’s frame and footing, creating and keeping hierarchy and solidarity relationships on a co-construction of their identities. From the viewpoint of relationships, the building of a family regarded as a social group appears to be changing, though people still maintain conservative values. The present paper proposes data and results, so that one can think upon the family’s interactions, helping to compensate the construction of social and discursive identities, mainly the ones involved in the relationships of conflict and negotiations, which are part of families in process of changes.

Relação entre gênero e perfil comportamental de cães e seu sistema imunológico / Relationship between gender and behavioral profile of dogs and their immune system

Akamine, Adriana Tiemi 06 September 2012 (has links)
Behaviors leading to the establishment of hierarchy appear in domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) in the first weeks of life, in the form of postures and games. These behaviors are the basis for learning attitudes displayed by adults that assert their position in the hierarchical ranking of the group. Individual characteristics of animals, such as personality may influence their immune system, mainly by the action of glucocorticoids. Another very important hormone in the relationship between nervous system and immune system, called neuroimmunomodulation, is testosterone, and therefore, the gender is also an important part in this set. Recent research shows these factors in the context neuroimmune, employing animal models, especially in rodents. Nonetheless, few studies have been conducted using domestic dogs. To study the effects of personality traits and gender on immune parameters of dogs, we used 30 beagles (15 males and 15 females). Behavior was observed, assessed and recorded, by animal-focal analyses, and the profile of each individual animal in its group, based on hierarchy ranking was described. We evaluated cortisol, testosterone, total leukocyte counts, and differential activity of neutrophils (oxidative burst and phagocytosis) and lymphocyte phenotyping. These parameters were assessed at baseline, after the stressor (stimulus of transportation), and 15 days after a change of the groups. Results show that without stressors, oxidative burst of neutrophils is higher in females. The stressor stimulus of transportation increases the activity of neutrophils regardless of gender. Without stressors, the profile of dominance does not influence the parameters measured, but after transport and reassembly, animals with dominant attitudes had the highest percentage and intensity of phagocytosis in neutrophils. Therefore, our work, being a pioneer in this subject, shows that depending on stressor stimuli, gender and personality of the animal influence immunological parameters. Further research should be conducted to elucidate the mechanism(s) of action that promotes these results and other aspects involved in this relationship.
