organ-ing / organ-ing

Farkas, Gergő D. January 2024 (has links)
Organ-ing is a multidisciplinary choreographic project that operates through a set of obscure organs that expand from spaces into bodies and from bodies into spaces. These organs don’t have vital functions and don’t seem to want to be named either; one could absolutely survive without them. Their byproducts are dances, sounds, objects, and poems: a gathering of lovers in lust for touch. Organ-ing is a strategy for a worlding that doesn’t stop at the body's borders. It is realised through an interest in the organ as a form that holds things as well as an ongoing formation. As an organ grows, I learn what it does. The project doesn’t follow linear paths of causality concerning what forms what: these organs shape and are shaped by what they create and hold. While realised and felt inside the human body, they also pour into and out of it. They might be organs of a human but they aren’t human organs. These emergent organs propose a sense of fiction to intertwine with the body’s pre-existing narratives, whether medical or holistic, and bring forth an array of fantasies that weave together the felt sense of the body. The organs of organ-ing don’t mean correcting or questioning what is already there. Instead, they twist or expand mostly pre-existent physical capacities to fabricate a body lustfully entangled with itself and its environment, with the ability and deep desire to belong. Myco-scapes: Multispecies Entanglements in Artmaking

Thornton, Eva Marie 25 June 2024 (has links)
Myco-scapes: Multispecies Entanglements in Artmaking is a body of ephemeral fiber sculptures. These weavings and digital fabrications are the result of collaborations with dynamic materials and other species, primarily fungi. The artworks (or artifacts) of the artist's material intra-actions explore the possibilities, challenges, and ethics of multispecies collaboration. Furthermore, in its ephemerality, Myco-scapes responds to the preventative conservation practices employed by art museums. Not only do these sculptures embody the fleeting nature of material entanglements, but they also challenge the capitalist structure of art collecting through their impermanence. The written thesis describes the artist's studio practice by exploring three primary influences: mycelium (the root-like structures of mushrooms), entanglements (the complex interwoven structures in which we exist), and preventative conservation (art-handling protocol designed to preserve artifacts). / Master of Fine Arts / Myco-scapes: Multispecies Entanglements in Artmaking is a body of ephemeral fiber sculptures. We sought to understand whether students prepare future projects of action for reducing social inequality. The study was conducted at a particular university in a little city of Sao Paulo. This study was grounded theory based on three pillars: a) an analysis of the conditions of life under capitalism, b) a discussion on the role of education in capitalist society influencing law degree, and c) from the intersection of psychology and law aimed to understand: social inequality and social movements. The historical materialism dialectical was used as methodological perspective in qualitative research. Were structured as material for analysis in this study: 2 Instrument Information Search (IIS), containing identification data and socio-demographic data, as well as written answers for each participant, produced from two texts of popular movements. Were performed two Focal Groups meetings. The considerations, reflections and notes on the information obtained, were produced from a dialectical analysis as a way to understand the conflicts between individuals and society, resulting summaries, the researcher developed from an interpretative analysis of the contradictions expressed in texts written by participants. As this study indicated the main considerations: I) need to broaden the discussion about what are the social movements and their forms of collective expression in daily life; II) the importance of more research that seeks to understand the characteristics of law students, their specificities, and their cultural universe, and III) the need to develop a linked network between psychology and law, which favors original practices with creativity, flexibility and methodological foundation to integrate the knowledge of both areas, to enable a mode of action against social inequalities.

Rosén, Nils January 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this paper consists of examining the different ways of thinking about death and life beyond death conveyed in the game Grim Fandango Remastered. This was done by using a theoretical framework consisting of a self invented definition of death called "Bodily death". This definition consists of common notions about death such as cessation of life functions like movement, metabolism, respiration and overall cessation of brain functions. It also included cessation of vital processes, which includes the ability to make energy transfer, making reparations, for example by cell replication, as well as the waste system of the body.  Besides this, the study examines the prevalence of dualism, a conception that views the soul essential to the individual's mental state. Two kinds of dualism were investigated, simple dualism with the assumption that the individual is made up of the soul, and compound dualism, where soul and body are dependent on each other for the survival of the individual. The study also examined the prevalence of materialism, a mindset where the individual is comprised of a combination of things without life or consciousness, in other words an existence dependent of the body. The results showed mainly a view that was non agreeable with bodily death, as the characters had many life signs such as breathing, ability to move, nutrition, metabolism and other signs of functions that would not be possible without the brain's functionality. Furthermore as shown with sprouted, the death within death in the game which consisted of becoming overgrown with flowers, showed signs of life rather than bodily death, as flowers have the vital process of photosynthesis. The game also showed mainly ideas of dualism as the characters often was referred as souls. The kind of dualism that occurred most however was compound dualism because the game often implied that characters died when their bodies became destroyed.

There is more than thirty years, the American philosopher John Rogers Searle turned around to the questions of philosophy of mind, whence presents his solution to varied problems about the nature of mental. His first incursion occurred with the book Intentionality, where your main objective was not to solve, at first, problems relating to this issue, but rather to offer a theoretical grounding more solid to his theory of speech acts. However, from this book Searle turns to questions specifically of philosophy of mind. One of his main focus is the relationship between mind-body, where he believes that the solution theoretical-conceptual for that question is not so difficult as we thought. Nevertheless he is not leave of to broach a number of other related topics that he considers of utmost importance in the consolidation of his theoretical scope, such as the causation mental problem and the human subjectivity. Thereby, the present dissertation have for main objective to show, to discuss and critically evaluate the solution that Searle proposes these four central problems of the philosophy of mind: mind-body relationship, mental causation, subjectivity and intentionality. The first three chapters aims to show as Searle see these questions, in other words, what he believes to be wrong in philosophy of mind and what would be the most appropriate solution. In chapter four, we will go to show the main critics to John Searle's solution, focusing in a thematic approach. Thus we will present critics of these four subjects that Searle believes to be essentials in philosophy of mind, about which built your biological naturalism. Lastly, we will make a critically evaluate of what was presented. Therewith we will go to analyze the what weight of criticisms to Searle's philosophy, what qe believe to be right and what we disagree.

The impact of materialistic monism and suffering on medical students :a critique of the biomedical and biopsychosocial model of medical schools

Kuehne, Jan (Jan Cavan) 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: On entry to medical school, students are confronted with a worldview that can be typified as materialistic monism. The student progressively becomes a materialistic monist, not only because of the teaching, but also because medical schools fail to address the question of suffering. One would expect the biopsychosocial model to surmount the limitations of the biomedical model, but it in itself has to deal with both suffering and materialistic monism. Suffering cements the collapse into materialistic monism in the way the student practises medicine. What life strategies would transcend this materialistic monism? This thesis examines potential educational interventions that might help the student to analyse the philosophy of medical school and find ways of dealing with the question of suffering.

A Critique of Elimanative Materialism

Chiu, Sen Yang Unknown Date (has links)

Ludics for a Ludic society : the art and politics of play

Jahrmann, Margarete January 2011 (has links)
This dissertation provides an analysis of, and critical commentary on, the practice of playfulness as persistent phenomenon in the arts, technology and theory. Its aim is to introduce political reflections on agency through the study of playful technological artefacts, which were largely ignored in the recent discussions on game and play. Following the critical analysis of historic discourses and actual studies of play under differing auspices, and in order to understand play as inherently political agency, this thesis’ research question addresses the immersive effects of playful agency in symbolic exchange systems and in the material consciousness of the player. This thesis conducts an analysis of material cultures, in order to categorise play as technique of an inherent critique of technological culture. It traces the development of contemporary technological objects and their materiality in relation to the application of the concept of affordance in design theory. The author consequently proposes a new category of ‘play affordances’ in order to describe these new requirements of play found in consumer technologies. The structure of the analysis in the distinct chapters is informed by a stringent historic, theoretical and arts analysis and an alternating arts practice. The convergence of these elements leads to insights on further uses, options and perspectives of the research problems discussed, in particular in relation to the requirements of playful interaction in contemporary technologies, which increasingly radicalises the importance of play. The thesis’ hypothesis states that playful practices in arts and technologies provide models for political agency, like the strategic use of Con-Dividualities (Jahrmann 2000). This term describes the concept of shared identities in society or social media consumer technologies, as discussed in historic case studies and the author’s own arts practice, related to the modification of technologies as methodology of arts research. In this way the arts practice and theory of playfulness informs the emergence of a new methodology of research, intervention and participation in society through the arts of play, which is coined as Ludics, as an original outcome of this thesis.
