UPS system : how current and future technologies can improve energy efficiency in data centres

Milad, Muftah A. January 2017 (has links)
A data centre can consist of a large group of networked servers and associated power distribution, networking, and cooling equipment, all that application consumes enormous amounts of energy as a small city, which are driving to a significant increase in energy inefficiency problems in data centre, and high operational costs. Also the massive amounts of computation power contained in these systems results in many interesting distributed systems and resource management problems. In recent years, research and technologies in electrical engineering and computer science have made fast progress in various fields. One of the most important fields is the energy consumption in data centre. In recent years the energy consumption of electronic devices in data centre, as reported by. Choa, Limb and Kimb, nearly 30000000 kWh of power in a year, may consume by a large data centre and cost its operator around £3,000,000 for electricity alone. Some of the UK sites consume more than this. In the UK data centre the total power required are amid 2-3TWh per year. Energy is the largest single component of operating costs for data centres, varying from 25-60%. Agreeing to many types of research, one of the largest losses and causes of data centre energy inefficiency power distribution is from the uninterruptible power supply (UPS). So a detailed study characterized the efficiencies of various types of UPSs under a variety of operating conditions, proposed an efficiency label for UPSs, also investigate challenges related to data centre efficiency, and how all new technologies can be used to simplify deployment, improve resource efficiency, and saving cost. Data centre energy consumption is an important and increasing concern for data centre managers and operators. Inefficient UPS systems can contribute to this concern with 15 percent or more of utility input going to electrical waste within the UPS itself. For that reason, maximizing energy efficiencies, and reduce the power consumption in a data centre has become an important issue in saving costs and reducing carbon footprint, and it is necessary to reduce the operational costs. This study attempts to answer the question of how can future UPS topology and technology improve the efficiency and reduce the cost of data centre. In order to study the impact of different UPS technologies and their operating efficiencies. A model for a medium size data centre is developed, and load schedules and worked diagrams were created to examine in detail and test the components of each of the UPS system topologies. The electrical infrastructure topology to be adopted is configured to ‘2N’ and ‘N+1’ redundancy configuration for each UPS systems technologies, where ‘N’ stands for the number of UPS modules that are required to supply power to data centre. This work done at RED engineering designs company. They are professionals for designing and construction of a new Tier III and Tier IV data centres. The aim of this work is to provide data centre managers with a clearer understanding of key factors and considerations involved in selecting the right UPS to meet present and future requirements.

Avaliação de custos decorrentes de descargas atmosféricas em sistemas de distribuição de energia / Evaluation of the costs arising from atmospheric discharges in power distribution systems.

Alberto Akio Shiga 16 March 2007 (has links)
Lightning discharges have always been treated as Acts of God and force majure events, inherent to man?s will. However, significant changes to this regard have recently occurred in the Brazilian Law, in the Civil Code and on the Brazilian Standard ABNT NBR 5410: 2004 (Low Voltage Electric Installations). In addition, on April 29th, 2004, ANEEL Normative Resolution No. 61 was published, which establishes the provisions regarding reimbursement of damages in electrical equipment installed in consumer units, caused by disturbances in the electrical system. According to this new version, the lightning discharges must be treated as phenomena which may have their consequences foreseen, avoided or at least minimized, causing the associated costs to be considered not only as losses, but also entitled to reimbursement with the operator. Such factors, allied to the non-existence of a common methodology for the review of the losses caused by such phenomenon, motivated the development of this work, which aimed at assessing the lightning-related costs in power distribution systems. In addition to the technical and legal aspects, the costs regarding non-supplied power, equipment damage, labor and indemnity claims (PIDs), are also discussed. Although superficially, the importance of taking into account the cost of the company?s image with the consumers is also discussed. Finally, a methodology for the determination of such costs is presented and applied to actual cases, with comparison and analysis of the results obtained in different situations.

A New Conception of Multilevel Inverter for UPS Application / Uma nova concepÃÃo de inversor multinÃvel para aplicaÃÃo em UPS

Lincoln Moura de Oliveira 23 November 2009 (has links)
FundaÃÃo Cearense de Apoio ao Desenvolvimento Cientifico e TecnolÃgico / This work deals with the theoretical analysis, design methodology and laboratory implementation of a 3kVA on-line mode Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) composed by a multilevel inverter based on a transformer with multiple secondaries and an active power factor correction input stage composed by a diode rectifier in series with a boost converter. The main motivation for this study is to assess the benefits of multilevel inverters in low power (<10kVA) applications. A 3kVA Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) with output and input voltage of 220V and 60Hz, has been implemented. Simulation and experimental results for a single phase prototype are conducted to validate the proposed idea. The utilization of low frequency operation inverters promotes low EMI, lower switches stresses, very low commutation losses and consequently higher efficiency. The multilevel converter here used isolates the load from the grid due to the multi-windings transformer intrinsic to the topology. The on-line mode of the UPS (no battery mode) has been implemented. Simulation and experimental results for a single-phase prototype are presented to validate the proposed converter.

This work investigates a non- ideal dynamic system that is a special group of dynamics systems. The object studied in this work is a rotor composed of an elastic shaft carrying a disc which is excited by a limited power supply. The system has tranversal and vertical displacement and a coordinate of rotation of the disco A numerical study is done here in order to investigate the non-linear dynamics of the system. Numerical simulations such as: space-state diagrams, frequency response diagrams, bifurcations diagrams and Lyapunov exponent show the strong influence of the energy source on system response, and reveal regular and irregular motions. Besides, Sommerfeld effect is observed, as well as the jump in system response, when a control parameter of the energy source is varied. / The values of the parameters required in a Contract of Electric Power Supply are often estimated with bases on the demand forecasted using the “Naive” method, for nonindustrial consumers. Sometimes, the method suffers some empirical adjustment, which can generate a non-optimal contract for the consumer. Universities (in special the public ones) are examples of these type of consumers since they have considerable physical dimensions. The elaboration of a demand profile for these type of consumers, based on a study of the operation of the facilities, is a complicated task. Because the consumer is part of the Public Service, there is a need for Contracts defined with sufficiently clear criteria, given the pressure of the control bodies, particularly when the responsible and effective use of the public money is considered. Therefore, methods based on the consumer demand forecast in function of consumer’s history, and capable of greater approximation with reality, would be important to obtain contracts with minimized financial values. A method was developed based on data of the registered demands of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF), and Temperature and Class Calendar adjuvant data. The method tests the predictions made by linear (Moving Averages, ARIMA and Holt-Winters) and by non-linear methods (Neural Networks). The predictions were compared and the best one was taken to an optimization process using Genetic Algorithms. The optimization revealed optimal data for the contract and its costs. The prediction that showed the best performance was the one obtained using Neural Networks without the adjuvant data. The optimization led to the choice of the “Tarifa Azul”, with possible economic gains for UFJF.

Análise da dinâmica não-linear de pêndulos com excitação paramétrica por um mecanismo biela-manivela / Analysis of the nonlinear dynamics of a pendulum excited by a crank-shaft-slider mechanism

Rafael Henrique Avanço 23 March 2015 (has links)
In this analysis it was studied the dynamics of a simple pendulum excited by a crank-shaft-slider mechanism in the support ideally and non-ideally. In the ideal case, it was verified the result for an excitation by a crank-shaft-slider approaches to the result of the harmonically excited pendulum when the radius of the crank is sufficiently small in comparison with the length of the shaft. The resultant differential equation is solved numerically and the results of pendulum behavior are obtained by phase portraits, time histories and Poincaré sections. It is also calculated the Lyapunov exponents for the chaotic cases in analysis and a comparison is performed with bifurcation diagrams in the same regions. Basins of attractions are plotted for stable results like oscillatory and rotational solutions. In the results observed for the crank-shaft-slider excitation there are kinds of motion similar to those observed in the harmonic excitation: fixed points, oscillation, pure rotations, oscillation-rotations and chaos. However, in the principal resonance zone, chaotic results were more frequent when the radius of crank approaches the shaft length. A brief analysis is done concerning the same mechanism, but considering the excitation by limited power supply of a linear DC motor. In the sequence it is checked the feedback effect from the pendulum over the motor and comparison with the respective ideal excitation is accomplished where differences are commonly observed. With greater power the ideal model coincides with the nonideal model. In cases of lower power, the two models diverge in the results.

A Novel Arc Welding Power Supply with Improved Power Factor Correction

Tan, Benjamin H 01 May 2020 (has links)
This paper presents the design and development of a novel Arc Welding Power Supply utilizing a modified two-switch forward converter topology. The proposed design improves the power quality by improving power factor to near unity and reducing total harmonic distortion. State space analysis of the proposed circuit showed that the circuit followed a boost-buck input output relationship. Simulation of the circuit was first implemented in LTspice to verify the functionality of the new topology. Hardware implementation of the proposed design was built on a scaled-down prototype for a proof-of-concept of the new topology. The prototype specifications were created for a 5A, 20V output with a 20-24V, 60Hz input. This project demonstrated that the proposed new topology was successful in obtaining a near unity power factor and a total harmonic distortion of less than 2%. Additionally, the prototype followed the simulation and calculations of a boost-buck function while varying duty cycle, and the final measurements aligned well with waveforms from the simulation.
