What is the Nature of the Professional Practice of Artist-Teachers? Four Case StudiesSweat, Ashley Dawn 12 January 2006 (has links)
Many artist-teachers struggle to nurture and pursue their ambitions in their dual roles. The purpose of this research is to explore the nature of the professional practices of artist-teachers. While there is a substantial amount of research that provides models of artist-teachers, who teach at the post secondary levels, there are not many models for artist-teachers who teach primary and secondary age groups. Four artist-teachers, whose practices are currently contributing to the art world, as well as the educational world, were interviewed for a multiple case study. The roles represented in the study include painters, sculptors, a ceramist, a musician, a performance artist, art teachers, a music teacher, and a performance-art educator. This multiple case study provides four models of artist-teachers whose professional practices contribute to their identity and fulfillment in their dual roles. The study reveals the artist-teacher’s practice as an artist, practice as a teacher and relationship between the dual roles.

The Ethos Of Architects Towards An Analysis Of Architectural Practice In TurkeyFehim Kennedy, Nilgun 01 September 2005 (has links) (PDF)
A certain architectural " / ethos" / come into being as a result of the specific training which architects receive as producers of space, of their dual status as artists and professionals, of the conditions in which they live and the social status of their profession. This ethos is a product of the architects' / collective habitus. The attitudes of architects regarding their position in the building industry, their role in society and their self-image (or its lack of) as artists determine the transformation within the architectural profession under the impact of the changes in society. This study investigates architects' / professional practice by focusing only on those architects working independently and mostly having their on offices. Thirty-one architects were grouped by age, gender, the faculties from which they graduated and province of residence and work. The international influence on architectural discourse, the effects of architects' / organisations and their professional ideology were introduced as additional variables for investigating the nature of their habitus. The interviews revealed that the architects' / " / spontaneous professional ideology" / (SPI) is the main adhesive of their collective habitus and ethos, and it force architects to think in a specific way about space, the sovereignty of architecture, its art component, its legitamacy, architects' / devotion to their profession, their feelings of superiority over clients and users as well as their overall code of conduct.

Mehrländerprojekt Agrarbezogener Bodenschutz24 August 2010 (has links) (PDF)

Previous issue date: 2011-02-11 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The objective was to understand the characteristics of models of health care from the acts and actions of physicians and nurses, the family health teams of health districts I and II, the city of Joao Pessoa, identifying alternative strategies or tactics produced by these professionals. This is an exploratory, descriptive and inferential, developed from qualitative and quantitative approaches, held in the city of João Pessoa, in the period from February to November 2010. This research was divided into two sequential phases: the first included the collection of data through a questionnaire applied to doctors and nurses of Districts I and II, and the second concerning the qualitative phase, conducted by semistructured interview for professionals health have developed some alternative strategy or tactic in their professional practices. We used the Hypothesis Test as a method of Decision Making and Technical Analysis of Discourse proposed by Fiorin (2008) for empirical analysis, aimed at the construction of empirical categories, representing every element of the work process. It was evident that health districts I and II show a distribution of physicians and nurses with similarities in relation to aspects: training, time undergraduate, graduate, area of interest to postgraduate students and encourage continuing education. Moreover differences were observed regarding gender, age, area of postgraduate uptime in Primary Care, service time at the Health Unit, Office of another activity and socioeconomic profile. The results showed a higher proportion of these professionals implementing acts and actions characteristic of health care models and Privativist Sanitarian. By analyzing the characteristics of the FHS model, it was found that most doctors and nurses, at least in the field of intention, implements health acts with a view to consolidate the principles and guidelines of this model. Regarding the development of alternative strategies or tactics, only three acts of health professionals have developed which, although not flag something innovative, it reveals a concern to overcome practices of previous models, the prospect of changing the work process.

'Doing the portfolio' : pre-registration training for biomedical scientists and developing the capable practitionerSmith, Sara January 2018 (has links)
Integration of work-placements into undergraduate degrees is now established on awards linked to professional registration in healthcare. Pre-registration training forms the basis for development of capability and entry onto a professional register. This enquiry explores how key stakeholders on a programme leading to registration as a Biomedical Scientist (BMS) position themselves in their role and the subsequent impact of this upon the development of the capable BMS. It draws upon current knowledge of work-based pedagogy and utilises a constructivist grounded theory (CGT) approach to explore the perceptions and experiences of individuals and groups to develop an interpretative portrayal and deeper understanding of the implementation of pre-registration training in one region of England. Data gathering and analysis was divided into two stages. The first employed analysis of professional documents to provide an insight into current discourses around BMS training. This provided initial developing categories and directed the creation of a questionnaire. Questionnaire responses confirmed the relevance of the developing categories and a summary of responses provided an ‘ice-breaker’ to guide stage two of data gathering. This stage employed focus groups and interviews to enable a greater understanding of how individuals make sense of their experiences. Initial, focused and theoretical coding allowed synthesis and conceptualisation of the data gathered and presented direction for the enquiry. The findings expose the challenges of integrating professional registration training into an academic programme of study. Three theoretical categories were identified: Role conflict, Expectations and Ownership. Conceptualising the interactions and intersections of these categories enabled the recognition of ‘Doing the portfolio’ as a way of describing and conceptualising the stakeholders positioning within the current programme. The registration portfolio has become an objective reductionist measure of learning, reflecting the positivist typology of practice in this profession. This provides a theoretical explanation as to how the programme is delivered and why there is a need to rethink conceptualisation of the role of the programme in supporting pre-registration training and the development of the capable BMS. To ensure that BMS students are supported to develop not only technical skills but also professional capability there is a need for a paradigm shift from a positivist episteme to one that embraces both the positivist and socio-cultural paradigms, viewing them as complementary and parallel. The novel research approach used in this enquiry has generated rich insights into how stakeholders interact with the pressures of internal and external influences and the impact this has upon behaviours and strategies adopted. The theoretical understanding proposed, which recognises the tensions emerging from a positivist typology of practice, has a range of implications for practice and for the development of practitioner capability through pre-registration training and beyond.

This doctoral thesis addresses the educators’ professional training and practice process of the municipal and state public network of the city of Igrejinha, RS. This is a case study that follows the materialist theory and uses the philosophical categories of the Dialectical Materialism, the Historical Materialism sociological categories and also Marx's Political Economy categories. From the Dialectical Materialism we discuss the principles, laws and categories that are interlinked in the training process of the teachers and also involved in their professional practices. This thesis is characterized as a case study that tries to analyze the existing contradictions between the municipal and state public network education teachers’ training and practice within a vision of totality. With this thesis we try know and understand the contradictions between the professional training and practice, and at a second time, we suggest concrete and viable actions in the sense of improving the educators’ practice in the classroom and thus contribute to improving the level of quality of public education in Igrejinha, RS. In this thesis I state that the existing contradictions between the educators’ professional training and practice are linked to the low quality level of Igrejinha’s education and they also contribute to a discouragement atmosphere and demotivation among the teachers, students and various professionals who are involved with education. The data that we outlined in this thesis come from research in bibliographic and documentary sources, and as data collection techniques, we used the semistructured interview and the semi-directed observation of ten teachers’ lessons. From this thesis we can claim that the viability of projects for the organization of concrete actions focusing on teachers’ continuing/permanent education is urgent so that they can harmonize more the theoretical dimension together with the practice dimension present in the pedagogical process. The education investment raise to the achievement of a fair wage policy, as well as the wage raise, are solutions that are required under the emergency regime as a way out to stimulate teachers who struggle in different classrooms in various students’ groups. We advocate that education and training are political phenomena able to contribute in the process of emancipation of human beings and from that prepare young people to the conscious exercise of citizenship and thus we are creating conditions for enhancing democracy and transform the society.
