People and organizational development have brought significant changes to the work dynamic nowadays. People are realizing that daily dedication goes beyond financial income; they search for meaningful work and purpose, which connect people’s individual essence to the organization. Finding this connection means more engagement at work, prosperous businesses and happier people. To achieve these results, this study is a proposition of a plan to help leaders to act as facilitators, helping employees to connect to their individual and organizational purposes. This is a journey that involves the identification of the main work motivators, the understanding of how leaders are going to address this purpose and the awareness on how leaders can use the identification of drivers and barriers to convergence of purposes and the description of elements to facilitate their interventions. The results come from a select group of companies considered excellent places to work and certified by Great Place to Work®. This research presents the findings that demonstrate the management practices related to the purpose and meaningful work and how the organizations can use this piece of information and how they can inspire other companies. However, leaders lack orientation and structure, so their actions won´t be only intuitive, causing losses in the possibilities of helping employees to create connections between their individual and organizational purposes.

The governability dilemma : progressive politics under Lula and the Brazilian Workers' Party

Gomez Bruera, Hernan Francisco January 2012 (has links)
This thesis addresses the challenges and dilemmas that progressive parties of mass-based origin confront when they exercise state power, by looking at the governing experience of the Brazilian Workers' Party (PT), with an emphasis on the administration of Luiz Inázio Lula da Silva (2003-2010). It draws on 140 interviews with party and social leaders at all levels, as well as on secondary sources and archival research. Drawing on the notion of governability, the study offers a systematic understanding of the constraints that the party faced in national executive public office, how such constraints were perceived by some of the most influential party leaders, and how these leaders acted upon them. This work contributes to the party literature by paying more attention to the way in which progressive parties create conditions to govern, which has so far been neglected, and by introducing into the party literature the notion of governability, present in Latin American political debates. The study distinguishes between two different types of governability strategies used by progressive parties: the elitecentred and the social counter-hegemonic. The former accepts the current distribution of power; the latter seeks to alter the balance of forces within state institutions by relying on civil society, mobilisation and participation. I argue that one of the most important transformations in the PT has been the switch from a social counter-hegemonic strategy, very influential in some cities, to an elite-centred one. As a secondary aim, this study provides a new interpretation of the changes that occur in party-civil society relations when progressive parties of mass-based origin gain executive power. This thesis challenges the current accepted wisdom in party and social movement literature that parties tend to move away from their social allies when they enter government; the PT example offers evidence that this is not always the case.

Randolph Blackwell and the economics of civil rights

Hickmott, Alec Fazcakerley January 2011 (has links)
The life of Randolph Blackwell (1927-1981) provides a new lens through which to view the evolution of African American politics during the 20th century. Though perhaps most recognizable as a member of Martin Luther King‘s Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Blackwell‘s career as an activist had dimensions far broader than that of non-violent resistance. Most importantly, Blackwell‘s thought and praxis suggests the centrality of an economic and class-rooted analysis that endured far beyond the halcyon days of the Popular Front during the 1930s and 1940s. Through the medium of biography, this thesis charts the trajectory of Blackwell‘s political life. Beginning with his influence of his father—a member of Marcus Garvey‘s UNIA—Blackwell‘s journey intersected with some of the most foundational institutions and organisations shaping African American politics during the period under consideration, including Henry Wallace‘s Progressive Party of the late 1940s, the NAACP, the Voter Education Project and the SCLC. This thesis also ventures into unchartered territories, particularly in its description of Blackwell‘s post-civil rights career. In 1966, Blackwell founded Southern Rural Action, a non-profit private organisation dedicated to the cause of working class empowerment in some of the most impoverished counties in the South. Delineating Blackwell‘s unique, geographically centered vision of southern rebirth between 1966 and 1977, this thesis provides the first account of a long-ignored chapter in the history of "civil rights" organizing in the post-King years. Finally, Blackwell‘s work for the Federal Government as head of the Office of Minority Business Enterprise is given its due consideration.

EU regional policy in Greece : state capacity and the domestic impact of Europe

Chardas, Anastassios January 2011 (has links)
The purpose of the thesis is to analyse the implementation of the European Union's Regional Policy (EURP) in Greece and to clarify and explain the contextual factors that resulted in the ineffective deployment of the policy. It adopts a comparative political economy approach and employs largely qualitative methods in order to collect empirical material. It develops a conceptual framework based on the theories of state and administrative capacity on the one hand and Europeanisation and implementation on the other. Empirically, the aim is to substantiate the difficulties that the country faced in the implementation of the EURP. Moreover, the aim is to explain these difficulties with reference to the patterns of interaction developed within the institutional network that was created as part of the EURP as well as the domestic authorities that supported the implementation of the policy. The Greek state has suffered from a series of weaknesses that impacted upon its internal administrative as well as its interactive capacities in the field of developmental policy. The recent Europeanisation of the country's polity has partially addressed these issues. Nonetheless, the fieldwork research on the implementation of the EURP reveals that these difficulties persisted and impacted upon the patterns of the implementation of the policy. Significant delays, implementation difficulties and reorganisations of the programmes were the main characteristics of all the programming periods. Furthermore, the introduction of the institutional network that would manage and monitor the implementation of the programmes has become embedded in the previously existing patterns of state-society interaction. The thesis has two main original contributions. The first consists of the empirical findings and particularly the detailed analysis of the patterns of implementation of the third Community Support Framework (CSF). Moreover, it offers the first detailed study of the separate administrative network that was established in the third CSF and attempts to depict its impact upon the patterns of institutional interactions that were established in previous programming periods. Secondly, the conceptual framework that it develops in order to account for the patterns of implementation of the EURP in Greece has not been employed for similar purposes. It postulates that it is important to account for the mediating influence that domestic political and administrative institutional arrangements play in the implementation of the EURP.

Tweet: reelaboraÃÃo de gÃneros em 140 caracteres / Tweet: genre re-elaboration in 140 characters

Sayonara Melo Costa 10 December 2012 (has links)
This thesis discusses the process of genre re-elaboration in the formation of Twitter posts. We therefore investigated how the functioning scheme and the value dynamics of this social network inspire the manipulation of different genre patterns that, when migrating to the interior, are submitted to its usersâ work. We conduct our discussion in the light of social network analysis practiced by Recuero (2009; 2010), the epistemological reflections on the discourse genre nature formulated by Bakhtin ([1979] 2011), the communicative purpose concept coined and made neat by Swales (1990; 2004), Askhave and Swales (2001) and Bhatia (1993; 2001) and the re-elaboration concept, as been updated since AraÃjo (2006) until Zavam (2009) and Costa (2010). Supported by this theoretical and methodological basis, we undertook an analysis of 195 posts and 45 questionnaires answered by Twitter users. At first, from the post propagation indexes, we observed how the social network functioning dynamics influences the diffusion and the genre arrays sedimentation formed by patterns and distinct genres. In a second step, we turned to the tweet form, detecting that strategies were used by the users in order to intervene in the genres when elaborating their tweets. Finally, we investigated, in the corpus examples and with the users questioned, that communicative purposes were served by the posts resulting from this work. The results showed that, within Twitter, there is a peculiar functioning dynamics, which is reflected in the language actions of the actors of this social network whom, motivated by the desire to put themselves in evidence and broaden their connections, mobilize and manipulate distinct genre patterns by using specific strategies. The genre arrangements generated from this scheme have distinctive communicative purposes, at the service of the social network itself. We believe that the sum of these factors: peculiar enunciative demand, distinct genre pattern mobilization and communicative purpose modification, is set as a genre re-elaboration constant process, whose products are consumed and propagated within the social network, feeding it back.

A General-Purpose Animation System for 4D

Jensen, Justin Alain 01 August 2017 (has links)
Computer animation has been limited almost exclusively to 2D and 3D. The tools for 3D computer animation have been largely in place for decades and are well-understood. Existing tools for visualizing 4D geometry include minimal animation features. Few tools have been designed specifically for animation of higher-dimensional objects, phenomena, or spaces. None have been designed to be familiar to 3D animators. A general-purpose 4D animation system can be expected to facilitate more widespread understanding of 4D geometry and space, can become the basis for creating unique 3D visual effects, and may offer new insight into 3D animation concepts. We have developed a software package that facilitates general-purpose animation in four spatial dimensions. Standard features from popular 3D animation software have been included and adapted, where appropriate. Many adaptations are trivial; some have required novel solutions. Several features that are possible only in four or more dimensions have been included. The graphical user interface has been designed to be familiar to experienced 3D animators. Keyframe animation is provided by using a set of curves that defines movement in each dimension or rotation plane. An interactive viewport offers multiple visualization methods including slicing and projection. The viewport allows for both manipulation of 4D objects and navigation through virtual 4D space.

A Complexity of Real Functions based on Analog Computing

Dhillon, Adam 01 January 2019 (has links)
This thesis is focused on analyzing a particular notion of complexity of real valued functions through the lens of analog computers. This report features design changes to Pour-El’s notion of an analog computer that reflect this question of complexity in a concrete way. Additionally, these changes to the analog computer allow an extension of Pour-El’s work in which the complexity of a function can be identified with the order of a differentiably algebraic equation that the function satisfies.

Planning and visualization of energy-efficient container buildings for residential purposes under three climatic conditions

Reitz, Linda January 2019 (has links)
Shipping containers that can no longer be used in cargo transportation are accumulating in large numbers in ports all over the world. At the same time, the usage of fully modular and prefabricated components in the construction sector is on a constant rise in recent years. Reusing these containers in their current form without melting them down, significantly elevates their lifetime usage as well as opens new and interesting options for modular buildings. While there are already many container buildings worldwide, the area of energy-efficient container houses has hardly been touched. Therefore, the goal of this thesis is to show the usage of shipping containers to plan energy efficient buildings in three different climate zones, while each building itself is fully climate adaptable for its location using passive architecture. To accomplish this primary focus, a detailed analysis of the climate conditions of the locations is necessary. The tree locations are Stockholm, Berlin, and Cape Town. Afterwards a uniform base model will be developed, depending on the specifications of these shipping containers. This Base Case can be adapted to three different climate conditions, by modification and adaptation to create buildings with an effective passive architecture for each location’s climate conditions. These modifications will be used to develop a suitable design for each climate zone with all specifications described and visualized for each case of usage.
