An Historical Study of the Carol "In Dulci Jubilo"Parker, Mabel, 1909- 08 1900 (has links)
A study of the carol form immediately leads into the field of the hymn; each is a form of praise or worship. The hymn is as instinctive as life itself, and as universal as the air man breathes. Hymns to the sun god, to the many Babylonian deities, to the Great Spirit of the American Indian - these are found, along with others in all ancient literature.

This thesis aims to extend the contribution of Daniélou\'s studies for the fields of Philosophy of Music, Music Theory and Musical Cognition, going beyond the field of Ethnomusicology within which his work is commonly classified, and to understand its contribution to the understanding of music today, both with regard to its reception and to the possibilities that its creative aspects opens. Being consistent with the system of Indian thought of Alain Daniélou, and its affirmation of the unknowability of ultimate reality and falsehood of the truth taken as dogma, we analyze their studies and researches as possible redescriptions or interpretations of the musical phenomenon, for this we based on the approach made by Gadamer between Theory and Philosophy and Rorty\'s propose that new object redescriptions contribute to broaden your knowledge, beyond this, we agree with Kuhn points about the scientific paradigms, and Vattimo attaches especially to the arts: persuasion and rhetorical conviction have a leading role in the consolidation of a paradigm, be it artistic or scientific. We understand the musical descriptions of Daniélou as close to the authors like Titus Burckhardt and his proposition of Sacred Art as well as Joscelyn Godwin and the Speculative Music. It also analyzes the studies and the surveys of Daniélou more like a proposition, a contribution to the development of a new creative possibility in the field of music, than a systematization of an existing music. As a result, the approach of the Daniélou\'s work allows the possibility of defining and comparing the groups and terms Speculative Music and Musical Speculation; Sacred Music and Sacralization of Music; Doctrine of Ethos, Theory of Affections, and Expression of Feelings; the symbolism involved in musical metaphysical approach proposed by Daniélou and his Universal Scale of the Sounds allows us to define the terms Tonic and Fundamental or Root. Finally we propose a theoretical-philosophical interpretation addressed to the poetics of musical creation considering the possibilities opened up by its scale as a different kind of relativism of the Equal Temperament System, perspectivism, fertile ground for the creation.

Windy city, holy land: Willa Saunders Jones and black sacred music and dramaHallstoos, Brian James 01 December 2009 (has links)
My dissertation argues that African Americans in the 20th-century connected lynching and other acts of racial violence with Christ's crucifixion, which in turn fostered hope and even interracial amity by linking his resurrection with racial uplift. To illustrate this dynamic, I focus on musician, dramatist, and church leader Willa Saunders Jones (1901-79) and her Passion play, which she wrote in Chicago during the 1920s. Over the course of six decades, Jones produced her play annually in churches and later large civic theaters. Growing in size and splendor, the play remained intimately tied with the Black church. It also bore the impress of Jones's cultural training in Little Rock, Arkansas and Chicago, the city to which her family fled after a transforming brush with racial violence. The rise of her Passion play depended upon her musical success, most notably as a choral director. By focusing on a single cultural product over time and through several disciplinary lenses, my study contributes new insights into the role of sacred music and drama within the African American community.
Offering a brief overview of Jones and her play, my Introduction also articulates the dissertation's two central organizing concepts: the crucifixion trope and resurrection consciousness. Chapters One and Two explain why Americans, especially of African descent, made a link between the suffering of black men in America and the crucifixion of Christ (the crucifixion trope). Chapters Three and Four indicate why Jones considered sacred music and drama to be agents of racial uplift and interracial amity. The final chapter focuses on the theme of Christ's resurrection as a metaphor that animates certain responses to racial trauma (resurrection consciousness). In addition to a wide range of secondary sources, I draw upon personal interviews, court records, genealogical records, the Black press, visual images, song lyrics, correspondence, autobiographies, plays, playbills, school records, television footage, and church publications of the National Baptist Convention, USA. "Windy City, Holy Land" should be of special interest to scholars in African American Studies, American Studies, History, Religious Studies, Theatre Studies, and Women's Studies.

An original expression of the Council Vatican II : her historic histories, her context, her meaningSteinmetz, Michel 13 October 2010 (has links)
Starting from the apparent conflict between the ritual move and the musical act in Catholic liturgy, this thesis sets out to study the munus ministeriale of sacred music as it appears in the conciliar constitution of Vatican II (SC112). This phrase, a hapax legomenon in the whole council, which was never applied to music until then and hasn't been thoroughly studied up to now, is worth considering. That's why it would be appropriate to search for its possible historical antecedents, to grasp its context so as to better apprehend its meaning. The processes suggested here, not only a pure matter of historical investigation but also a piece of theological reflection, follow that of Sacrosanctum Concilium by questioning in turn the Church Fathers, the teaching of the Popes, among whom Pius X holds a fundamental position, before examining the elaboration of the conciliar text itself. Moreover, this study focuses on the use and import of the munus and ministeriale in all the documents from Vatican II so as to bring out their theological significance for sacred music. It appears that the latter gets the status of theological place founded on the notion of mediation, and rooted in a succession of mediations. Through its munus ministeriale which then makes it specific, sacred music really is part of a sacramental order, which expresses its function but also its programmatic role in divine cult.

Previous issue date: 2012-06-01 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The object of this work are the benditos sung by the pilgrims during the pilgrimage to
the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus da Lapa BA, studied and analyzed through a ritual
perspective. These popular songs of oral tradition sung in novenas, rosaries and
religious processions are one of the earliest manifestations of popular Catholicism that
still remain in some communities, mainly inland and rural of northeastern Brazil. We
hypothesized that by studying and analyzing the benditos sung by the pilgrims in Bom
Jesus da Lapa is possible to systematize the pilgrimage, recognizing all stages of this
itinerary, identify the myths of the Sanctuary origin and compose a sort of "ordinary
pilgrimage", with their own songs and benditos that, when sung, contributes to the
update of this religious tradition and confirms their specificity. By studying the musical
repertoire cultivated by pilgrims, we are also in search of the spirit of pilgrimage.
Initially we contextualize the sertão, the background for the entire pilgrimage, and
describe the profile of the pilgrim and their intentions on the pilgrimage, as well as
present the rites and departure s benditos. Then we talk about the origin of the
Sanctuary, its founding myths and myths of origin of the pilgrimage itself, and also we
report the rites and benditos themselves of the outward journey. After, we describe
the rites of arrival at the Sanctuary, the relationship of closeness and intimacy that is
established between the pilgrim and the saint, and speak of rites and the permanency
benditos. To finish the work, we look after the rites of farewell, with their own
benditos, we broach the theme of remembrance and the cyclicity of the pilgrimage, and
the benditos sung by pilgrims on the journey back, thus completing the entire cycle of
pilgrimage.
In this study, we conclude that the pilgrims of Bom Jesus da Lapa do not just sing at the
pilgrimage, but instead sing "the" pilgrimage itself, with its own ordinary; and while
singing the pilgrimage, the pilgrims sing themselves. It was also possible to see that,
indeed, the benditos are an integrant part of pilgrimage and prerequisite for its effective
do nordeste brasileiro.

Religious musical performance as an articulation of transformation : a study of how the Tsonga Presbyterians of the Presbyterian Church of Mozambique negotiate their indigenous Tsonga and Swiss reformed church heritagesGermiquet, Nicole Madeleine January 2015 (has links)
The Presbyterian Church of Mozambique (IPM) has its origins in the Swiss Mission and the European Reformed Church. An ethnomusicological study was conducted on the music of the IPM in order to uncover its musical influences. The musical influences were found to pertain to an indigenous Tsonga musical character, as well as to a Reformed Church musical tradition. By situating the discussion in this thesis within the perspective that music may reflect that which is not explicitly spoken about in words, the music of the IPM was shown to reflect the dual-heritage of the members of the IPM. Thus, this thesis attempts to answer the questions: how is the music of the IPM a reflection of the Tsonga Presbyterians’ dual-heritage?; and how do the Tsonga Presbyterians negotiate their dual-heritage? It was found that the Tsonga Presbyterians negotiate their dual-heritage by blending a Reformed Church performance style with a Tsonga one. For example, the music in the form of hymns and church songs, performed by church choirs, is shown to be didactic in nature where the lyrics are the most important aspect of the music. The didactic nature of the music is a principle of the Reformation carried forth in the music of the IPM. Although music serves to transmit the Christian message and is used as a means of praising the Christian God in the IPM, it also exists on the level in which the indigenous Tsonga heritage may be incorporated into the Christian lives of the members of the IPM without having an impact on the Reformed Church belief system. This is where the members have the freedom to blend their musical heritages. Music, in this instance, is shown to be a powerful tool by which the importance of an indigenous, and an appropriated, heritage may be garnered and observed.Looking to the historical aspects of the IPM, the music and language literacy education, provided by Swiss missionaries on the mission stations, was shown to have had an influence on Tsonga hymn composition. Along with the mobile phone, the observed decrease in music literacy at Antioka was situated within a discussion that looked at the influence of these aspects on the transmission, conservation and continuation of music in the IPM. Throughout the thesis, social transformation is referred to and the manner in which the music of the IPM is conserved or continued is an indication of how musical transformation may reflect social transformation.

This dissertation proposes an analysis of the sacred musical work by Porto
Alegre composer Léo Schneider (1910-1978) based on a selection of his major sacred
compositions. It emphasizes the uniqueness of Schneiders esthetic project and its
possibilities as a tool for religious education.
The first part of the research introduces Leo Schneiders personal history, from
his family background to his formal and musical education, pointing out the
environment in which he lived and the cultural, social and political background of his
time. Musical aspects of the major Brazilian composers of his time and the international
musical scenario of the period will also be taken into consideration.
The focus is on sacred compositions of Schneiders time through a parallel
between his work and that of his contemporaries, but the research also provides an
understanding of his work within the context of protestant communities, especially
Lutheran.
The second part of the dissertation addresses the influence of Martin Luthers
ideas on Leo Schneiders life and work, particularly the reformers principles towards
the meaning and the use of music in the church.
The third part of the research analyzes five of Schneiders major sacred
compositions, taking into account their musical and literary aspects so as to draw
pedagogic connections in the fields of music, theology and religious education, stressing
out the practical side of the composer, a diligent and creative artist at the service of the
Gospel teaching through music.

música no contexto comunitário evangélico-luterano. / The Grupo de Louvor e Adoração (Praise and Adoration Group) as a musicaltheological
educational space and instrument in congregations of the Igreja
Evangélica de Confissão Luterana no Brasil (IECLB) (Evangelical Church of Lutheran
Confession in Brazil). The research begins by outlining an historical profile of the
introduction of the model of Praise and Adoration Groups within the IECLB. To do
this, the general context (musical, theological, political and social) in Brazil between
the years of 1960 and 1980 is delineated. The legacy of the reformer Martin Luther,
as relates to music and to the formation of the IECLB is analyzed and an historical
description is given of the emergence of the Encontrão Movement, which is the
birthing place of these groups within the Lutheran context. Following this, an analysis
is presented of the gathering-practice session of the Praise and Adoration Group in
the light of Martin Luther's, Paulo Freire's and Lev S. Vygotsky's writings, looking at
those dynamics which encompass theological-musical education for the members of
the group and which could be reflected within the congregational life or be reflexes of
this life. Finally, considerations are proposed for the dynamic of a Praise and
Adoration Group which could reflect into the comprehension, use and role definition
(on the part of the group and of the worshiping congregation) of music in the worship
service and in congregational life. For this, the main topics of the theological
comprehension present within a Praise and Adoration Group are described and
resources and considerations are presented for an educational and theological
intentionality with regard to the use and role of music within an Evangelical-Lutheran
congregational context.
