This research aims to investigate school Tomé Francisco da Silva, located in the city of Quixaba, in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil. This institution has been standing out in the region for its excellent performance on external education evaluations, both statewide and nationally. In order to understand this success, it is necessary to think about which factors have contributed for the effectiveness of Tomé Francisco da Silva School in those education evaluations? Based on this issue, this work tried to analyze more deeply the students’ performance in these evaluations and explain the school educational situation, which reflects directly in such successful results. The main subjects on this research were students, teachers, parents, and all the people who are part of Tomé Francisco da Silva Public School. The methodology used has both the qualitative and the quantitative approach, which used together, allow us to verify the results of the conducted interviews. Documents as the Political Pedagogic Project, the school’s regiment and the minute book from the school council meetings were also analyzed. The theoretical framework used on this research includes the studies of Heloísa Lück, Thelma Polon, Pam Sammons, and other authors who have produced works related to school effectiveness. This project aims to suggest actions in order to institutionalize the good practices of the present management, allowing the maintenance of the actions that has been currently developed, and that has guaranteed success for the students of Tomé Francisco da Silva School.

This work was developed on the Professional Master in Management and Education Evaluation from the Center for Public Policies and Education Evaluation on the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (CAEd / UFJF). The management case presented here discusses the use of the Standardized Test by teachers, coordinators and principals of 6th to 9th grades from elementary education in public schools from Teresina/Brazil, considering that this evaluation must be used as a pedagogical tool in order to improve its implementation process. The Standardized Test is an external evaluation on Portuguese Language and Math, applied to students in 6th to 9th grades. The aims of this study were: investigating the appropriation of the Standardized Test results as a pedagogical tool inside Teresina public schools; describing the process of Standardized Test implementation, since its conception (2009) until 2015, in the city educational system from Teresina; understanding how the school actors appropriate the results of the Standardized Test in the period of this research; proposing actions aimed at improving the process that involves the Standardized Test in a way that it can be adopted in schools by teachers, principals and pedagogical coordinators as a pedagogical tool which contributes more consistently to student learning. For that, we use quantitative and qualitative research as methodology, and as instrument we use a questionnaire applied to Portuguese Language and Mathematics teachers, directors and pedagogical coordinators who work in the 6th to 9th grades in schools from the city educational system. It was noticed that individuals understand that the Standardized Test has a diagnostic function. However, the use and appropriation of its results are still fragile, requiring actions aimed at overcoming this posture considering the data of the tests. We searched on the theoretical frameworks the discussion about matrices and curriculum, external and internal evaluation, since they are issues that increase the understanding about the Standardized Test and its effective use. Based on the results obtained on this research, an educational action plan was developed in order to consolidate the PP in the educational system.

Lacroix, Katherine January 2017 (has links)
Abstract : This study investigates if the socioeconomic composition, as well as the physical and social disorder of neighborhoods were associated with academic performance among Quebec school children, with and without conduct problems, aged 12 to 15 (N = 630). In particular, the moderating role of conduct problems was explored. Findings indicated that physical and social disorder, along with the percentage of low income individuals in the neighborhood were associated with some aspects of academic performance. Conduct problems did, however, moderate between neighborhood variables and school performance. The implications of these findings will also be discussed.

Psykisk ohälsa i skolan / Mental health in school

Salihi, Mine, Shiravand, Niki January 2022 (has links)
A person's mental health can significantly affect their everyday life for better or for worse. In recent times, it has been shown that more and more pupils have suffered from poor mental health which leads to negative consequences for their school work. The purpose of this study was to further examine what previous research has said about mental health and its effects on grades as well as school performance. The question at issue we chose to be able to further investigate this is the following; What does previous research say about the correlation between mental health and grades as well as school achievement? Furthermore, our method for this study was to look into precious inquiries regarding mental health and its correlation to lower grades and lower school performance. Regarding the research, we used both qualitative and quantitative articles. Also, we made sure to be source critical during the duration of this entire study. For example, we mostly used sources that came from a trustworthy database that our college Malmö University offers. The rest of the sources that were not a part of the mentioned database were carefully picked out and made sure to be trustworthy. Moreover, we took other precautions regarding being source critical such as making sure the article or book had been peer reviewed. In relation to the results, the research showed that poor mental health in younger pupils tends to follow them when they get older. Also, getting a low grade can lead to poor mental health and having a poor mental health can lead to low grades displaying that the issue goes both ways. Some pupils may be drawn to alcohol and/or drugs when they are feeling depressed which leads to a lack of performance in school. Moreover, the research indicates that there is a “need” to get good grades and receive a higher education to be able to fit in. The pupils who lack this can therefore be looked upon as failures. To sum this up, this study can enlighten individuals on how important it is with mental health and the negative results a poor mental health can have on school performance. Finally, it is important to acknowledge that mental health can arise from other things as well, however, the study shows that school can be a factor to why pupils are feeling depressed.

Exploring the Relationship Between Critical Resource Variables and School Performance in Secondary Schools of Mukono Uganda

Mugimu, Christopher Byalusago 09 November 2004 (has links) (PDF)
While good facilities and resources are assumed to affect the quality of teaching and school performance, findings of the growing body of research about resources and school performance remain obscure and highly contested. A central question in effective schooling research is to what extent do resources translate into school performance particularly in impoverished communities of the developing countries. The primary purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between school-level financial, physical, and human resources on school performance as measured by aggregated UCE exam scores in 63 secondary schools. This study is grounded in the strategic theoretical perspective of Resource-Based View (RBV), which suggests that specific resources and capabilities can lead to superior performance. The findings of this study are mixed. While some results of this study indicated that the three kinds of resources (i.e. financial, physical, and human) contributed to school performance of secondary schools in Mukono Uganda, particular kinds of resources contributed more on school performance than others and the size of their effect differed widely. The researcher argues that if educators and policy makers can identify the critical resources that best contribute to student learning, then schools could be encouraged to invest in, nurture, and maintain these particular resources. This strategic focus would allow schools, especially in developing countries, to more efficiently and effectively use their current meager resources to maximize benefits to students.

The Relationship Between Selected Attributes of Algebra I Teachers and Student Achievement on the Algebra I SOL Test in Grades 9-12

Miles, Bernardine Goode 18 March 2010 (has links)
This study of the relationship between teacher attributes and student scores on the SOL Algebra I Test in Grades 9-12 focused on three prominent teacher attributes: certification, specialization in math, and years of experience teaching math. The study also assessed two additional relationships: 1) the relationship between student socioeconomic status, as reflected in the percentage of students who receive free or reduced fee lunch, and the SOL test score; and 2) the association between teacher perceptions of Stronge's (2002) domains of effective teaching and achievement on the SOL Algebra test. Teachers who taught high school Algebra I in the Commonwealth of Virginia voluntarily completed a questionnaire about their experiences and educational preparation, and their perceptions of teacher attributes that contribute to student achievement in Algebra. The study found no significant relationships between the teacher attributes and student achievement on the Algebra I SOL test. Only two of Stronge's domains of effective teaching, <i>Teacher as a Person </i>and <i>Monitoring Student Progress and Potential </i>, were statistically significant. These findings affirm recent reports that traditional measures of teacher quality such as seniority or certification, or established views of effective teaching may not be related to student achievement. The study found that the students' socioeconomic status had a statistically significant association with student achievement on the Algebra I SOL test. Although the study findings are limited because of the small sample size and the homogenous sample of Virginia teachers, the findings are consistent with recent reports on effective teaching, and widespread educational reform. Studies that are specifically focused on the teaching of subjects such as Algebra could help to identify the characteristics of great math teachers and the unique teaching strategies these teachers use to help students successfully learn math. New research that utilizes qualitative research methods has the potential to identify additional classroom strategies and approaches used by great teachers. In 2009, No Child Left Behind requires that all schools find, hire, and retain highly qualified teachers for core subject areas. The findings of this study suggest that traditional measures for hiring and rewarding teachers may need to be expanded to include new perspectives on selecting effective teachers. / Ed. D.
