The Effects of Age-Graded Associations on the Political Activism of the Elderly

Mata, Joe I. (Joe Israel) 12 1900 (has links)
Although the graying of the American society has been well documented, the question as to whether the elderly populace will indeed become a political factor has yet to be determined. Some studies indicate that the elderly will soon develop the consensus needed for political action; other studies counter that the elderly will never be a viable political factor. Among the determinants listed as influencing the political participation equation are standard socioeconomic variables (e.g., race, social status, education, and income). These factors have been studied extensively (Campbell 1960; Key 1950; Milbrath 1965; Nagel 1987; Rose 1965). Trela recently added an item that could possibly influence the political activism of the elderly: membership in age-graded associations. This study addresses the questions raised by Trela (1971), namely, whether age-graded associations influence the political activity of senior citizens, and if so, in what direction elderly participation is swayed. Unlike previous reports, the preliminary data gathered for this study suggest that the age-graded associations of the elderly cannot accurately predict their political activism.

Experiences of digitalization among Swedish senior citizens : A qualitative phenomenographic interview study on how senior citizens in Sweden experience the phenomenon of digitalization / Experiences of digitalization among Swedish senior citizens : A qualitative phenomenographic interview study on how senior citizens in Sweden experience the phenomenon of digitalization

Ånstad Andersson, Joanna January 2023 (has links)
Our digital world is accelerating at a rapid pace and has made technology a prime component of today’s societies. The development of digitalization affects us all in one way or another but it primarily affects our senior citizens, those who may possess a less developed knowledge within the field. How do senior citizens experience digitalization and its effects on their everyday lives?. This thesis conducted with phenomenographic semi-structured interviews aims to analyze and grasp how senior citizens experience and perceive the developing digitalization in the western world. Studies stresses how technology and digitalization increase information and communication spread in our societies and can be an efficient tool for staying in touch with relatives and close friends living far away. The results of this study, however, emphasizes on the, less talked about, negative aspects of digitalization. The collected material consists of the answers extracted from eight interviews with male and females aged 65-80+ and these answers are categorized into similarities and differences seen in the interviews. Theoretical perspective of digital divide, ageism, visions of time, concept of experience and social imaginaries were applied to the extracted material to place the experiences in a context. The analysis clearly presents a difference between the genders and their relation to digitalization and it does relate to previous integration and knowledge with the technological field. The male interviewees communicate positive experiences with the digital world as a majority of them have been in contact with technology during their working life. The women on the other hand have more dull perceptions of digitalization and are experiencing feelings of fear of falling behind in the digital world. Self-efficacy and acceleration of time, society, and the digital world play part in how digitalization is experienced and perceived by senior citizens, a generation which may find themselves in a situation where they are unwillingly excluded from the digital society due to lack of previous knowledge and the opportunity to learn without requirements from society.

Media Use and Body Image Among Senior Participants of the World Senior Games

Harding, Lisa Nicole 18 November 2009 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between media use and body image in senior citizens. This study specifically targeted older people who participate in regular physical activity. Seniors participating in the 2006 Huntsman World Senior Games in St. George, Utah were surveyed concerning current body image and total media use. The sample included 691 participants. Lower body image scores were recorded among seniors who watched greater amounts of television. Magazine readership and body image displayed no relationship among men or women. Total media use did not influence body image scores among seniors. Male participants exhibited a stronger relationship than female participants between television use and low body image scores. Results indicated that males were vulnerable to messages targeting body image in a similar way to that of females. The findings of this study suggest that individuals may still be influenced by ultra thin images prevalent in media well into their older years.

Old Age Policy in Canada: A Critical Look at the Partial Indexation of the Income Tax and Welfare Systems

Auton, Greg January 1999 (has links)

One of the more interesting changes observed over the Twentieth Century has been the development of industrialized nations such as Canada into "welfare states", wherein there is some degree of a redistribution of national wealth, in the interest of creating a social safety net. While the Canadian welfare system grew and matured during the early and mid 20th Century, the larter quarter has been a time of stagnation and in some cases, retrenchment. A key rationale for proposals to reduce seniors' benefits has been the accelerated rate of population aging, and how current programs cannot be sustained in light of the increasing numbers of the elderly who will draw on them.

In response to these concerns, the Progressive Conservative government made a number of structural changes to Old Age Security and the tax system in the 1980's, in the form of partial de-indexation, which would effectively decrease the number of people eligible for Old Age Security, and reduce tax credits available to seniors each year.

This thesis uses time series national data to show how benefits and tax credits have declined over the last decade. From a political economy perspective, this process can be viewed as a gradual and stealthy transformation of the welfare state. Government maintained income security is gradually being dismantled and placed back into the hands of the market place. The tax system is being redefined in such a way that tax cuts that middle and lower income Canadians rely on are slowly losing value.

While RRSP contribution levels have been increased and some Canadians invest to both prepare for retirement and to gain the tax exemption for the invested income, only those with higher incomes can gain the most from this option. The effects ofthis process are discussed and the implications are considered in terms of distributional equity.
/ Master of Arts (MA)

Digital nudging; a retirees best friend? : Exploring relationships between digital nudging and motivation and ability of senior citizens in online environments

Beventorp, Jennie, Lindh, Matilda January 2024 (has links)
Digitalization of services in today’s society is moving rapidly forward and to be able to use digital services is usually expected, at least among younger and middle-aged population groups. The generation of people who grew up in a totally analog context are trying to get used to more and more services getting digitised. Some of the senior citizens are automatically getting excluded from the digital world when important services that they need are transforming into digital services. To reduce the digital exclusion and increase the digital literacy among seniors more research is needed connected to the age group and what they need to be able to use online services more easily. Nudging is a well-known theory in the behavioural economics field and a nudge can be described as a gentle push in the right direction. A nudge is supposed to help an individual to make the right decision. Nudging in a digital context is called digital nudging. By designing digital nudges in user interfaces, the choice environments in the digital world can be designed to help individuals make the right decisions in digital services or websites. This thesis explores if digital nudging could be a possible solution to increase seniors ability and motivation in online contexts. It aims to understand how digital nudges affect senior citizens' motivation and ability in online contexts. Empirical data was collected by using an online questionnaire. Twelve senior citizens in Sweden answered the online questionnaire. Three different digital nudges; social, friction and reminder were included in the research. The result shows that most respondents get affected by the digital nudges and so in different ways. Some get affected by the digital nudges in the way that the digital nudges are intended to affect the respondents, while others get affected in other ways, such as feeling sceptical and irritated. The predominant effect of the three digital nudges is overall that motivation and ability increases. A conclusion is that the effect of digital nudges on seniors is diverse and depending on many factors such as personal preferences and that it might be beneficial to use personalised and tailored digital nudges for this particular age group.

敬老福利生活津貼政策之回應性評估 / The Responsive The Responsive Evaluation of the Senior Citizens Welfare Living Allowance Policy

尚靜琦, Shang,Ching-Chi Unknown Date (has links)
The acceleration of population aging and diminishing financial support from offspring to senior citizens necessitate the establishment of a senior citizen’s social security system. Faced with the difficulties in implementing the citizen annuity, the government came up with an alternative plan in 2002: the Senior Citizens Welfare Living Allowance. This study shall take Taipei County, currently the administrative region with the largest number of Senior Citizens Welfare Living Allowance recipients in Taiwan, as an example. The six policy evaluation indicators suggested by Dunn& Poister, i.e. effectiveness, efficiency, equality, appropriateness, responsiveness, and adequacy are used to evaluate the current state of the Senior Citizens Welfare Living Allowance policy. The claims, concerns, and issues of the stakeholders of the Senior Citizens Welfare Living Allowance policy are concluded after holding in-depth interviews with the stakeholders. Research results found that stakeholders of the issues are mostly concerned about the equality of the policy. Demands of and satisfaction with the policy is determined by similar senior citizens’ allowance systems. Appropriateness regarding the distribution of allowances to participants of the public servant pension system is also of concern to the stakeholders. Inequality in the varying amount of the allowances between administrative regions is an issue, among many others, that can be addressed by the implementation of a citizen annuity system. In general stakeholders are moderately satisfied with the incumbent Senior Citizens Welfare Living Allowance policy. The policy is more effective and adequate for those with a monthly income of less than NTD$9,000.
