Time dependent material properties of shotcrete for hard rock tunnelling

Bryne, Lars Elof January 2014 (has links)
In this thesis different mechanical properties for shotcrete (sprayed concrete) such as compression strength, bond strength, bending tensile strength, elastic modulus, free and restrained shrinkage as a function of its age was investigated. One of the main issues was to investigate the difference between ordinary cast concrete and shotcrete. Reliable material data for young and hardening shotcrete is scarce which in the past have made such comparisons difficult. Also, less accurate data representative for cast concrete has often been used in numerical modelling and design analyses. The focus of the project has particularly been on the properties bond strength and restrained shrinkage for which two new testing methods has been developed and evaluated. Microstructural studies have also been performed as a complement to the bond strength testing. The bond to rock is one of the most important properties for shotcrete used as rock reinforcement. During the very first time after spraying the physical properties and the bond to the rock depend on the set accelerator and the micro structure that is formed. The investigation of early age bond strength of shotcrete is of great importance both from a production perspective and a safety perspective. The newly developed method was tested and evaluated and proved that it can be used for bond strength testing already from a couple of hours after shotcreting. The bond, or adhesion, depends on several factors such as texture of the rock, the type of accelerator, application technique, etc. In this work the development of the microstructure in the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) and strength of the bond was investigated. The results show that the bond strength is related to the hydration process, i.e. the strength gain of the shotcrete. The early development of the ITZ was here studied using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) making it possible to observe changes over time, before and after proper cement hydration. Restrained shrinkage cracking of shotcrete, especially in the case of shotcrete sprayed on soft drains that are parts of a tunnel lining not continuously bonded to the rock, can be detrimental for the sustainability of an infrastructure tunnel system. Maintenance and repair costs can be high over time. It is shown that the developed test method realistically captures the behaviour of shotcrete drains on hard rock in situ. The method can be used in the evaluation of different technical solutions for avoiding or minimizing shrinkage cracks in shotcreted soft drains. It can also be used to assess the performance of shotcrete fully bonded to a rock surface, with respect to the ability to prevent cracking or to distribute possible shrinkage damage into several fine cracks instead of one wide. /
QC 20140526

Hodnocení kvality provedení ručně stříkaného betonu / Evaluating the quality of implementation of the hand shotcrete

Kopecký, Lukáš Unknown Date (has links)
Currently, the high speed and low price are required for construction works in the modern architecture. Therefore, it is necessary to deal with verifying the quality of the constructions. Dissertation thesis is focused on evaluating the quality of the execution of sprayed concrete without accelerating additives applied by spraying by a dry way manually-sprayed. The quality of shotcrete was judged on the basis of standardized both non-destructive and destructive methods using sprayed samples. The quality of shotcrete was assessed in terms of strength of sprayed concrete in pressure, density and homogeneity judged on the basis of the velocity of sound samples. The destructive method was carried out on the core samples which were pressured on the hydraulic press, as the non-destructive method was used ultrasonic passageway method based on the propagation velocity of the ultrasonic pulse. On the basis of our results and their mutual correlations, it has been proposed the modifications of the general equal used for predicting the strength of the sprayed concrete tested by our strength class, which leads to a potential reduction in the number of cores on the real structure, and therefore reduce the price of implementation of qualitative tests and increase effectiveness of carrying out tests on the construction place.

Environmental and technical evaluation of cement reduction and test methods for fibre reinforced shotcrete in tunnels

Brodd, Elin, Östlund, Lina January 2022 (has links)
The dominating support method for hard rock tunnels today is use of fibre reinforced shotcrete in combination with rock bolts. The fibre reinforced shotcrete secures smaller blocks, while rock bolts are used to support larger blocks in the rock. Application of shotcrete is done by spraying against the rock surface using compressed air. The use of accelerators result in fast strength development and adhesive properties, which are two characteristics of great importance when constructing tunnels. This thesis aims at increasing the understanding of climate impact from fibre reinforced shotcrete in tunnel construction. The focus is on reducing the climate impact with two methods: reducing the share of cement in the shotcrete mixture through substitution with addition materials and using better test methods for fibres. Cement is one of the most important ingredients in concrete, however also the largest contributor to CO2 emissions. Reducing the cement amount is therefore a way of reducing the emissions of concrete. In addition, when testing the performance of fibres, different methods can lead to a spread in the results, causing an overuse of fibres in the shotcrete. First, the thesis investigated the use of alternative binder materials, especially Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS), as a substitute for cement. Experimental testing was performed in a laboratory to evaluate the compressive strength for shotcrete with different amounts of GGBS. Testing was performed after one and seven days in order to evaluate the early strength. Second, the thesis investigated the use of fibre reinforcement and the possibilities of reducing the fibre dosage when changing fibre type and test method. Numerical modelling was performed for two test methods, beam and panel testing, based on experimental data. The thesis evaluated the environmental performance in terms of Global Warming Potential for both fibres and binder. The results show that substituting cement with GGBS has the largest potential to lower the CO2 emissions from fibre reinforced shotcrete. In addition, the fibre dosage can be lowered by changing fibre type, but also test method. Also this lowers the emissions, however the main emissions origins from the binder part.

EVALUATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL AND TECHNICAL PERFORMANCE OF ALTERNATE FIBRES FOR SHOTCRETE IN TUNNELS

Anand, Shilpa January 2022 (has links)
Tunnels in hard and jointed rock are normally excavated in an arch shape to enable the rock mass to support its weight. Since the beginning of the 1980's, fibre reinforced shotcrete (FRS) in combination with rock bolts have been the dominating support method for hard rock tunnels. This type of rock support is a complex composite structure in which the structural behaviour depends on interaction between shotcrete, rock and bolts. The design is commonly based on a rock mass classification system in combination with analytical solutions or finite element (FE) modelling. However, the in-situ variations of important properties of the shotcrete are normally neglected. The aim of this thesis was to increase the understanding regarding the environmental impact of different fibre types used as reinforcement in shotcrete. First, a brief introduction to rock support and the role of shotcrete is presented. Along with this the technical performance and a short review regarding the production process involved in producing steel, synthetic and basalt fibres. To understand the environmental impact with respect to the production of different fibre types, environmental product declaration (EPD) from various producers were studied. Here, the environmental performance was studied from cradle to gate for the different fibres. The goal of this thesis was to study the global warming potential of fibres during the production stages and EPDs were used to compare the environmental performance for different fibres of different types and materials. For each fibre type different producers are also compared. To study the environmental impact, a case study in which the shotcrete should fulfil a specified residual flexural strength, or a minimum energy absorption was used. Within this thesis, any potential effects of deterioration of fibres or the need of technical improvement during the technical lifespan was not included. Fibre dosages to fulfil the structural performance were selected based on the experimental testing from the literature. Finally, a detailed discussion regarding the optimum dosages of the different fibre types and their environmental impact is presented.

Interação com o maciço de modelos estruturais de concreto projetado submetidos a gradientes elétricos para fins de suporte de túneis / Interaction of ground mass and shotcrete structural models subjected to electric gradient for tunnel support

Ferreira, Danieli Aparecida 10 September 2003 (has links)
This work presents the results obtained by employing a physical method for the strength increase of shotcrete at early age. The method consists of applying electric gradient to the material during the first 5 hours and 30 minutes of hydration, starting immediately after spraying. The mechanical behavior of shotcrete subjected to electric gradient was evaluated at different ages in terms of unconfined compressive strength and elastic modulus obtained from the response of structural models and on samples cored from the structural models. Shotcrete structural models were constructed in order to simulate internal forces resulting from ground mass - support interaction in underground works. Shotcrete in these models was sprayed directly on soil. It was thus possible to analyse the efficiency of the method when leakage currents occur through the soil. Model instrumentation alloed to evaluate the method efficiency in terms of shotcrete deformability. The evolution of elastic and creep strains were evaluated, as well as stress-independent strains since the beginning of hydration. Strength increase during the first 8 hours of age were observed both on panels shotcreted on wooden forms and directly on soil. The elastic modulus was also obtained from the analysis of the instantaneous strain reponse to the applied load. Improvement due to electric gradient was also found this way. Shotcrete rheology in terms instantaneous, delayed and creep strains was analyzed adopting the model proposed by SCHUBERT (1988). Improvement due to the electric gradient was found with respect to each of those strain components resulting from load applied at ages lower that 10h. Permanent strain after unloading was also reduced. The investigation of the phenomena responsible for the strength increase at early age due to the application of electric gradient to cement paste and mortar was carried out with the techniques of scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction. Microstructure changes were found in mortar speciments subjected to electric gradient, however without any change of hydrated products. Hydration rate changes were detected from diffractometric patterns of cement pastes subjected to electric gradient.
