Development of an Energy-Information Feedback System for a Smartphone ApplicationElliott, Joseph January 2012 (has links)
Energy conservation and efficiency are often widely touted as non-controversial, cost-positive methods of reducing energy consumption and its associated environmental effects. However, past programs to encourage residential energy efficiency and conservation have failed to make an impact. A growing amount of research identifies energy feedback as a method to provide consumers with the information and motivation necessary to make appropriate energy-saving decisions. JouleBug is a social, playful, mobile smartphone application designed to help users in the U.S. reduce energy consumption and live sustainably through behavioral changes. This project initiated the design of an energy feedback system for JouleBug that provides estimates of a user’s energy savings for completing 38 residential energy saving actions. Mathematical models were developed to estimate JouleBug users’ energy savings for each of the energy saving actions, based on 13 input parameters. A method was developed to aggregate each of the savings actions across various energy end-uses into a summary of the user’s energy savings over a given time period. Additionally, the energy models were utilized to analyze an average user’s potential energy, cost, and greenhouse gas savings over a year. Research into the design components of effective feedback systems was applied in the context of JouleBug to compliment the engineering work. The components of frequency, measurement unit, data granularity, recommended actions, and comparisons were examined. Design suggestions based on these components that utilized the energy models to provide effective energy feedback to JouleBug’s users were proposed. Finally, this report describes opportunities for future research using simple energy modeling methods to provide effective consumer energy feedback in a mobile smartphone application.

Short Message ServiceVulnerability Analysis : An attempt to attack the Serial Line on Symbian Smartphone In Orderto Inject Arbitrary SMSIlaghi, Mahya January 2011 (has links)
Short Message Service (SMS) is a permanently available service on mobile phone networks. In addition to text messages, it supports binary messages to provide various services to mobile phones. SMS security has a strong relationship to the security of mobile phones. Due to the open functionality of mobile phone networks, SMS can be exposed to dierent kind of attacks. To cope with the increasing demand for secure SMS, it is crucial to perform a vulnerability analysis of SMS-implementations to nd out potential security vulnerabilities that smartphones may be exposed to. Conducting vulnerability analyses of SMS is dicult, as one would need to send a large amount of SMS through the mobile phone network in order to conduct such analyses. However, if the need for a mobile phone network is removed from the vulnerability analysis, the diculties of performing it can be considerably reduced. Collin Mulliner and Challie Miller (2009) presented a testing platform (without the engagement of a mobile phone network) for this purpose in three popular mobile phone operating systems: the iPhone, Android and Windows Mobile. They claimed that their testing platform could be ported to other smartphone operating systems (OS). Since the Symbian operating system is one of the most popular smartphone platforms, this thesis focuses on how to port this testing platform to the Symbian OS for vulnerability analysis of SMS-implementations. The research methodology behind this study was an experimental research method, conducted by presenting a hypothesis and developing an artifact to test it. This research produced a key finding: that it is not feasible to implement this vulnerability analysis for SMS-implementations on the Symbian OS, when considering the prerequisites that Collin Mulliner and Charlie Miller dened in their work. They claimed that, if there is an application level access to the serial line for the modem or the ability to add or remove the arbitrary driver, then it is feasible to port their testing framework to other operating systems. This research discovers that neither of these conditions exists in the Symbian OS.

Robust heart rate estimation from a smartphone camera / Robust hjärtrytmuppskattning från en smart telefonkameraDarwesh, Ammar, Harivandy, Miran January 2022 (has links)
When it comes to calculating physical activity, nowadays a wide variety of tools is at our disposal. The phones used daily incorporate functions that calculate, for example, the number of steps taken throughout the day. Using the tools to set personal goals or to review which physical properties deviate. This work entails collecting data via a mobile camera using an application with the ability to measure luminance for the purpose of calculating heart rate. This thesis is done on behalf of Mobistudy, who wishes to calculate the heart rate during a common exercise test, the Queen’s College Step test. This is intended for use with a telephone held in the hand with the camera's index finger throughout the period, and the light intensity signal is affected by movement disturbances. The purpose of this work is to detect the heart rate in a way that is robust to these disturbances. The results were presented and, in the thesis, it was concluded that the majority of disturbances could be removed, but with the exception of a few tests.

Impact of Text in News Videos for the Viewing Experience on Smartphones / Text i nyhetsklipp och dess inverkan på tittarupplevelsen i en smartphoneSkoog, Terese January 2016 (has links)
The viewing experience of news videos differ depending on if the device used is a smartphone or a traditional TV, e.g. because some social situations for smartphones not allow audio to be used while watching. Can the adding of subtitles keep the perceived quality at the same level even in these situations? This study investigates the research question how the viewing experience of news videos on smartphones is affected by subtitles and text for young adults. The results are relevant for anyone aiming to improve the viewing experience of videos on smartphones. The study is based on the theory about the concept Quality of Experience, QoE. The method has an experimental approach: 64 participants watched three news videos and after subjective and objective QoE was measured. The conclusion is that subtitles increased every aspect of subjective and objective QoE in a public context when the videos were watched without audio, while they in a home context where audio was present, did not affect any aspect of QoE, except for a decreased willingness to continue watching.

The effect of mobile cellular network performance and contextual factors on smartphone users’ satisfaction : A study on QoE evaluation for YouTube video streaming via CrowdSourcingZhen, Zuguang January 2015 (has links)
Mobile data traffic will continue to show rapid growth in the coming years; however the data revenue is not rising fast enough to ensure the operators’ profitability. Therefore, mobile operators must seek new approaches to find out what service does the customers need and what quality makes the customers satisfied in order to keep their increasingly sophisticated customers satisfied at the same time minimizing their revenue gap. This paper investigate the effect of mobile cellular network performance and contextual factors on smartphone users’ satisfaction, this was done via crowdsourcing through an experiment where an Android Application and a user Survey were included, which is able to evaluate and analyze the perceived quality of experience (QoE) for YouTube service for Android Smartphone users. To achieve this goal, the App NPT performs measurements of objective quality of service (QoS) parameters, whereas the survey carriers out collecting subjective user opinion. The result show that network performance parameters do impact the MOS (Mean Opinion Score) exponentially, either in a positively or negatively way, however, multiple parameters need to be considered together in order to draw a more accurate correlation with QoE. In addition, QoE are heavily affected by many other contextual factors, such as age and gender as well as users location. QoE are also impacted by several subjective factors, such as user expectation. Not always the highest throughput will lead to the best QoE, and not always the best technology (LTE) deserves the best MOS. Even though user received very high downlink throughput, their MOS value may still be low due to they might think the video were not fun to watch and the quality has not meet their expectation.

En Modern Mobilapplikation, Från Idé Till Produkt / A Modern Mobile Application, From Idea to ProductJohnson, Niklas, Smogner, Peter January 2011 (has links)
