What could possibly go wrong?: Impact and Consequences in Design: DGTF ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2024 IN LUCERNE

Ibach, Merle, Augsten, Andrea, Vogelsang, Axel 17 January 2025 (has links)
What could possibly go wrong? 6 IBACH, AUGSTEN, VOGELSANG SOCIAL INNOVATION AND DESIGN CHALLENGES Incorporate agentiality into the design process for digital pain assessment using a flexible framework instead of user requirements 24 BREUER, MÜHLENBEREND, MEISSNER, ARNOLD, BAUMBACH, WILLMANN Medical Design – Zwischen Nachhaltigkeit und Sicherheit: Entwicklung einer zellstoffbasierten, ökologischeren Gesichtsmaske 38 MOOR, EGLOFF, HÜGLI Zwischen Desinfektion und Distinktion: Zur Designgeschichte der medizinischen Schutzmaske 54 LEYSIEFFER Spekulativer Geschichtsrevisionismus 66 BOHAUMILITZKY Something Wicked This Way Comes 78 A Problematic Paradigm for Design in Times of Crisis MEHL Traversing Cognitive Spaces. It reflected the role of designers in the face of social, political, and ecological challenges. Central discussion points were the power of design and the need for systematic impact measurement and impact assessment. The conference proceedings 'What could possibly go wrong?' shed light on the tension that goes hand in hand with the question of impact in design: on the one hand, design is seen as a potential beacon of hope for initiating sustainable, social transformations. On the other hand, handling resources, production chains, or knowledge gained in the research process is critically scrutinized, especially concerning possible negative effects and dependencies and the reproduction of power structures. The publication maps current research approaches in design research intending to make the impact relationships in design processes, methodological approaches, and theory formation tangible. In this respect, modelling within design research is still in its infancy, while established models already exist in the sustainability, social, and engineering sciences. This raises the question of how the impact of design can be measured, both concerning social innovations and social interventions, as well as in the context of manufacturing companies. The conference volume addresses initial approaches, reflects on the role of design in inter- and transdisciplinary research and practice collaborations, and shows the limits and challenges, particularly regarding power structures and exclusions. The 24 contributions from 21 peer-reviewed articles and three visual essays offer diverse insights into Shifting Perspectives, Impact and Measurement, Power and Complicity, Design Challenges, Social Innovation, Designing Governance, Managing Risk? and Exploring the Unknown. In this context, design impact assessment is discussed as well as the establishment of a culture of error that offers space for learning processes and different perspectives and, finally, the responsibility of designers when taking social, ecological, and economic goals into account and integrating unheard voices. The individual contributions reflect the need for a critical examination of modernist thinking, which is often associated with design and conveys techno-optimistic ideas of shaping a better future. It is encouraged to adopt a perspective that considers the role of design in a complex network of actors and influences and critically scrutinizes its impact on society, the environment, and the future.:What could possibly go wrong? 6 IBACH, AUGSTEN, VOGELSANG SOCIAL INNOVATION AND DESIGN CHALLENGES Incorporate agentiality into the design process for digital pain assessment using a flexible framework instead of user requirements 24 BREUER, MÜHLENBEREND, MEISSNER, ARNOLD, BAUMBACH, WILLMANN Medical Design – Zwischen Nachhaltigkeit und Sicherheit: Entwicklung einer zellstoffbasierten, ökologischeren Gesichtsmaske 38 MOOR, EGLOFF, HÜGLI Zwischen Desinfektion und Distinktion: Zur Designgeschichte der medizinischen Schutzmaske 54 LEYSIEFFER Spekulativer Geschichtsrevisionismus 66 BOHAUMILITZKY Something Wicked This Way Comes 78 A Problematic Paradigm for Design in Times of Crisis MEHL Traversing Cognitive Spaces. / Social Design and Event Design in South-East Tunisia : Heterotopy of the Ksourian Space. A Project-grounded Research.

Ellouze, Nesrine 31 January 2019 (has links)
As an architectural and heritage space peculiar to Berber (Amazigh) culture, the ksar (plural ksour) was used in the past as a granary and storage space by its owners, the local semi-nomadic tribes of Southern Tunisia. With time and the change to modernity, a shift in the socio-cultural values and worldview of the local population led to the neglect or mere abandonment of the ksour. The thesis hypothesizes that the concept of heterotopia coined by Michel Foucault could help provide an interpretation of these sites leading to the opening of an innovative project space that would restore value to the ruins of the ksour, behind which, as highlighted by our field inquiry, there lie institutional, social, and intergenerational conflicts. It is in such prospect, through a project-grounded research approach grounded on an event design project that took place during four days in April 2018, that we ventured to capitalize upon the available collective intelligence resulting from the dynamics of the system of stakeholders connected with this archeological and architectural heritage, otherwise promised to a mere touristic-economic exploitation. We believe that such an approach, consonant with social innovation by design methodologies (or social design), will make it possible to secure a sustainable and culturally fruitful future to the ksour without compromising their historical, anthropological, and patrimonial richness and meaningfulness.

Silva, Gustavo Cossio da January 2011 (has links)
This study concerns educative exhibitions that aim to offer a reflection on design. Therefore the exhibition is conceived as a design type of project, which makes timely the theoretical foundations on exhibition design, an alternative in environmental-graphic design. The conceptual basis comprehends the exhibition as a product which is a variable in the visitors’ perception. The aim is to generate project criteria throughout the analysis in three studies regarding the actions of organizers and designers, considering the communication with the audience. The research is of exploratory kind, to which we lay hold of semi-structured interviews. Challenges Of Work-Life-Balance During The Sars-Cov-2 Pandemic : Case study: Female professionals and their digital media practices

Okeyo, Ditte Marie Rørup January 2021 (has links)
The concept of work-life-balance has gained significant attention during the coronavirus pandemic. There are challenges in keeping solid boundaries between Danish female professionals work and private life. There have been previous studies that have demonstrated gendered roles of females that interrupt work and private life. This thesis builds on these qualitative studies. This is done by providing new insights into the challenges experienced by Danish females in balancing their work-life due to varying degrees of media dependencies when exposed to new digital practices (current pandemic). Therefore, the main research question is, “How and why do Danish female professionals experience fluid transitions between professional work and private life, with the increase of new forms of media dependencies?” The study consisted of eight semi-structured interviews with Danish female participants followed by a qualitative approach. Thoroughly employing social design in a mediatization framework, key themes in the experiences of the participants; work-life-balance, flexibility at work, virtual fatigue and self-care practices were extracted. The study also found that there are gendered roles during the coronavirus pandemic, with women shouldering a greater burden due to unpaid labour. The findings of this work provide deeper insights into the challenges females may endure during national lockdowns. It is envisioned that this work will allow for deeper reflections on the usage and consumption of digital media in keeping boundaries between work-private life. This includes Denmark and other countries. /p>

[en] CARNIVAL MASQUERADES: A STUDY ON THE CONSTRUCTION OF A PROCEDURAL AND COLLABORATIVE MEMOIR ARCHIVE / [pt] MASCARADOS NO CARNAVAL: ESTUDO SOBRE A CONSTRUÇÃO DE UM ACERVO DE MEMÓRIA PROCESSUAL E COLABORATIVO

CAMILLA SERRAO PINTO 30 August 2021 (has links)
[en] The theme of this intervention-research is the use of the ethnofiction method for the preservation and dissemination of popular masquerade demonstrations in Carnival celebrations all over the state of Rio de Janeiro. This research seeks to investigate how Design can contribute to the ethnofiction method for Carnival masquerades, given the aesthetic, symbolic and performative diversity of these traditions. This study is based on the assumption that illustrated fiction is a technique with potential to significantly spread the documentary survey. Therefore, this research seeks to determine the effectiveness of using illustrated ethnofictions to build a procedural and collaborative memoir archive. The theoretical contributions of authors from the critical perspective and from the Latin American Cultural Studies were essential to examine, from the narrative point of view, popular demonstrations of Brazilian masquerades, and their intermittences, focusing on the European colonial influences on these traditions. In addition, the gathering of oral narratives, and photographic and textual records helped understand the challenges for preservation and dissemination of these masked traditions. As a proposal for intervention in the research field, an illustrated fictional narrative for children and teens was developed. Based on the dynamics performed along the research, it was possible to observe how the use of drawings had an enormous potential as stimulus for the gathering of new data, enabling a collaborative and participatory mapping process of these masquerade traditions.

Designing for Social Change - Social responsibility and the graphic designer

Scott, Daniel January 2012 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to study social responsibility and find out what responsibilities the graphic designer may have and what they can do using their skill set as a designer to contribute in helping to better their community. Social responsibility needs to be addressed more within the design field. It needs to be introduced and taught to students at an early stage of their education, so as they fully understand the power and influence that their creations will have over society, and the role this plays in materialism, overconsumption and our modern day consumer-culture. Change needs to be made within graphic design and the urgency for this grows more and more for each day that passes. The graphic designer needs to critically reflect over the purpose of their work and answer the question of whom it stands to serve: their audience or consumer-culture. They need to move away from the creation of artificial needs and the promotion of unnecessary products, and move towards the creation of more useful and lasting communication that contributes to society.
