discussions and the media. Discussions on religion and religiosity have become widespread as
a means for construction of social representations, both as individual levels, in addition, in the
collectivity. This work deals with the construction of the order of Jesus, missionaries and
settlers of the projects that marked the presence of the Jesuit missionaries, from colonization
to the religious restructuring imposed after the expulsion of the Jesuit Order in Sergipe.
Expulsion is what happened in the midst of political and administrative changes made by the
Portuguese government in the mid-eighteenth century, which had representation at the
Marquis of Pombal its creator. Understanding the religious and social restructuring, designed
here in the practices and representations of popular and official. This restructuring has had on
the religious brotherhoods, religious orders and other representations, an important symbolic
presence in the spaces sociorreligiosos linked to Catholic practices in Sergipe. Representation

Astrônomos e apóstolos: um estudo da cultura científica jesuítica entre os séculos XVII e XVIII / Astronomers and apostles: a study of Jesuit scientific culture in the 17th and 18th centuriesGiovana Massaretto da Silva 11 October 2016 (has links)
From the mid-16th to the mid-18th centuries, the Society of Jesus was, under several perspectives, the most influential Roman Catholic religious order in the world. Its thousands of members, scattered over most of the globe (side by side with other agentes of European colonialism, and at times long before their arrival), saw themselves and were seen by others as individuals and members of a corporation markedly distinct from the rest of the clergy. Jesuit identity, constitutive of the high level of relative autonomy of the order inside the larger religious field, was to a great extent forged in the formative processes of future professed members, which took place in a remarkable network of colleges of the Society of Jesus (colleges that also had a huge number of students not destined to priesthood or religious life, but who were nevertheless equally exposed to the way of proceeding of the order). In this work, we look for signals of the specific workings of this system of cultural socialization, in the context of the Jesuit College of Santo Antão of Lisbon, particularly in its notorious Aula da Esfera (the cosmography and mathematics class). To this end, we analyze two manuscript notebooks containing student notes of the classes given by fathers Critoforo Borri in 1627, and Inácio Vieira in 1709. We sustain that these documents indicate the existence of a cultural matrix that, when internalized, predisposed Jesuits to make their choices and, more than that, shaped a way of thinking and seeing the world. In the notebooks, Jesuit specificity is present when we take notice of the constant presence of epistemological attitudes and pedagogical techniques typical of Scholasticism, a system that never fell off favor in the Society of Jesus even with the mounting, irreversible attacks that Scholasticism suffered during the 17th century

Tintas da terra tintas do reino: arquitetura e arte nas Missões Jesuíticas do Grão-Pará (1653-1759) / Tintas da Terra, Tintas do Reino: Art and Architecture in the Grão-Pará Jesuit Missions (1653-1759)Martins, Renata Maria de Almeida 01 October 2009 (has links)
This thesis is a study of the artistic and architectural production of the Jesuit Missions in the former State of Maranhão and Grão Pará, which was established in 1621, with a special emphasis on the Captaincy of Grão Pará. The period under study spans the time from 1653, when the Society of Jesus settled in the city of Belém, to 1759, when the Jesuits were expelled from Portuguese colonies. This thesis focuses in particular on the artistic work of both jesuits and indians carried out in the workshops at the Jesuit School of Santo Alexandre in Belém in the 18th century. The thesis seeks to trace the dissemination of the models created in such workshops throughout the Jesuit churches and chapels that were built along the borders of the River Amazon and its tributaries, especially those located in the Jesuit aldeias, vilas and fazendas closer to Belém (Vila de Nossa Senhora de Nazaré da Vigia, Vila Souza do Caeté, Mortigura, Gibirié, Mamaiacú, Jaguarari, among others). The hypothesis under investigation in this study is that Belém, in addition to being an economic and commercial hub, was also an artistic center providing models, working methods and technical expertise for the entire Jesuit artistic community in the Grão Pará. The title Tintas da Terra, Tintas do Reino summarizes the core idea underlying this thesis, namely that the Jesuit legacy in the art and architecture of the Grão Pará missions is the result of the work of europeans and indians, who in doing so resorted to their respective cultural traditions.

The present research aims to produce a knowledge about the way the University of Vale do Rio dos Sinos (Unisinos), located in Brazil, and the Pontifical Xavierian University, located in Colombia, have developed their institutional documents (Statute 2014, PDI-PPI 2006-2011 for Unisinos, and the Statute 2013, PU 2007-2016, PE 1992-2015 for Xaverian) in the current context. Both documents are permeated by the values of the economic neo-liberalism in a society driven by economic values of the techno-sciences and the techno-market. These universities belong to the Society of Jesus, a religious congregation whose educational field in its roots was structured on the principles and values of the Renaissance Christian humanism. Such is one of their characteristics over the Society’s history. The use of two contexts regarding our theoretical framework, called Policy Cycle Approach, proposed by Stephen J. Ball – Context of Influence and Context of Elaboration –, allows us to visualize, interpret and understand, both in a macro and a micro sense, the movements, joints and trajectories that influence and guide the development of educational policies and proposals. This study employs the Document Analysis Method by André Cellard. This method is divided into two stages: Preliminary Analysis and Analysis. We utilize only four of the five dimensions of the Preliminary Analysis proposed by the author (context, document’s authors, the nature of the text, and key concepts). Using these dimensions, along with the subsequent Analysis employed in conjunction with the Comparative Method in Education, by George Z.F Bereday, from which we used its fourth stage, made it possible to apply the Comparative Analysis of the documents. This methodological triangulation has provided support for showing that the documents studied here are subsidized in their preparation, inspiring and receiving influences from a set of documents issued by both the institutions to which the universities are linked – the Roman Catholic Church and the Society of Jesus – and the documents issued by the governments of the countries where they are located, as well as influences from the decisions and options made as consequences of the identity, mission, and vision of each Higher Education Institutions. However, this inspiration/influence does not occur through a process of simple accommodation or assimilation, but they are re-contextualized, reworked and re-signified at the institutional level, where different factors and related interests intertwine with the identity, mission, and vision of such institutions. The study shows that the institutional documents of the analyzed universities fall within the idea of process and that these two Higher Education Institutions have been implementing a major effort to conjugate, while developing their educational projects and plans, the social Christian humanism, from which they are inheritors, with techno-scientificity on an major challenge of creative fidelity to their institutional principles, seeking to build a techno-scientific humanism.

The Society of Jesus Library at the San Esteban School in Murcia is being reconstructed. A work plan has been developed in order to identify and classify titles and editions, based on a study of the inventory of the library's collection drawn up when the Jesuits were expelled on the orders of Carlos III in 1767. Using this methodology, an "inventory catalogue" has been drawn up, based on the information provided by the original inventory on the books and their bibliographical descriptions, which deals with the teachings habitually imparted in the Order's schools, in accordance with the Jesuit system of education.

"Per Déu i per la Ciència". L'Església i la ciència a la Catalunya de la Restauració (1874-1923)Bohigas i Maynegre, Jordi, 1958- 10 May 2011 (has links)
The author explores into the relationship between science and Church during a period of history in Catalonia in which the Church carried out a series of top level scientific measures, such as the school of geology of the Barcelona Seminar and the provincial geological map. At a time when science is used as a weapon to discredit the Catholic doctrine of religious belief in general, we've analyzed the response of Church through studying priest education and religious schools, its vision of science, speeches of scientific works carried out by priests, to conclude that the desire of conciliation with science and necessity of defending faith encouraged the updating of the ecclesiastical institution in some scientific disciplines. Later, the social prestige and authority given by science also helps to explain certain scientific “vocations", in particular, the strategy of Jesuits that gave as a result the scientific complex of Roquetes (Tortosa).

Going forth and setting the world on fire: assessing how St. Paul’s High School students are fulfilling the characteristics of the profile of the graduate at graduationStadnyk, Jarrod 19 June 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to assess how graduating students at St. Paul’s High School are fulfilling the characteristics of the Jesuit Secondary Education Association’s Profile of the Graduate at Graduation. These characteristics include being open to growth, intellectually competent, religious, loving, and committed to doing justice. While these five characteristics are identified as desired traits for graduates of St. Paul’s, there has not yet been an evaluation process undertaken in order to gauge student attainment of these characteristics. The methodology involved a document analysis, a collection of data from the sixty-two JSEA schools’ websites, and four interviews with St. Paul’s graduates from 2014. The three-fold approach allowed for a deep understanding of the context and experience of the Profile. This allowed for a reflection that showed there is a successful outline for creating a culture where the Graduate at Graduation is central to the mission of JSEA schools, which in turn makes the characteristics attainable.

Pedro de Ribadeneyra S. I. (1526-1611) et l'émergence d'un ministère de l'écriture dans la Compagnie de Jésus / Pedro de Ribadeneyra S. I. (1526-1611) and the Emergence of a Writing Ministery within the Society of JesusBouvier, Claire 30 March 2018 (has links)
Through Pedro de Ribadeneyra’s S.I. (1526-1611) specific trajectory — both a central personality within the Society of Jesus and a famous writer of his time — this dissertation analyzes the complex links between writing, religious institution and literary practices. To this extent, Ribadeneyra has to be understood not only as a functional figure within the Society, but also as a writer, dealing with a society often wider than the Jesus Society itself, in order to grasp his specificity as an author. At crossroads between the Society of Jesus’ history (institutional and spiritual history, along with the Jesuits’ history in Spain’s Assistance) and cultural history (precisely writing practices’ history in Early Modern Ages), this work seeks to understand Pedro de Ribadeneyra’s role within an Iberian “sacred Republic of Letters” and to question the religious writer’s figure during the Golden Age.
