Torbjörnsson, Tomas January 2014 (has links)
The comprehensive ambition of the present thesis was to acquire knowledge about expectations on and preconditions for environmental moral learning within the education for sustainable development (ESD) in the Swedish upper secondary school. The expectations on ESD were explored by examining the description of “sustainable development” in the curriculum, and the prerequisites were examined by analysing environmental attitudes, commitments, and actions of 18-year-old students. The thesis focuses in particular on attitudes to solidarity as a value that unites the social, economic, and ecological dimensions of sustainable development. The theoretical foundation is based on curriculum theory and learning theory, incorporating influences from pragmatic philosophy, while theories of environmental psychology were applied to explain commonalities in attitudes to altruistic and biospheric values. The thesis comprises four studies, and mixed methods were employed as methodological approach. The first study involved a discourse analysis, and aimed at clarifying the description of sustainable development in the curriculum, and to reveal what subject position(s) the discourse implies. The second study was a questionnaire, where statistical methods were used to analyse attitudes to solidarity, equality, and respect for nature. The third study was also a questionnaire, focusing more specifically on attitudes to different aspects of solidarity. The fourth study was an interview study, utilizing a thematic analysis in order to elucidate how students think about solidarity and the future, and how they have encountered the concepts of solidarity and future in teaching. The results disclosed that the expectations on ESD is characterized by an ecological modernization discourse, in which two subject positions are articulated, one scientific and one technical, the latter with expectations on students to be ethical agents. The quantitative studies in the present thesis corroborated previously found correlations between attitudes to altruistic and attitudes to biospheric values. The significant correlation between future orientation and solidarity unveiled by the present thesis constitutes however a pioneering result. The interview analyses imparted that students have experienced little moral reasoning in school with regard to sustainable development, and furthermore conveyed that the future dimension had basically been missing in the teaching they had encountered. The present thesis furthermore contributes methodologically and theoretically by the development of a new scale for appraising solidarity.

Building a movement – Solidarity, activism and travel from North America to Nicaragua

McRoberts, Daniel January 2012 (has links)
Many new forms of tourism have emerged over the past two decades claiming to provide an alternative, responsible approach to international travel. Unlike ecotourism and volunteer tourism, travel centered on solidarity activism has not been thoroughly explored in the academic literature. Through narrative interviews conducted with organizational staff, former travelers, and members of a rural host community, this study profiles three organizations that organize solidarity travel experiences in Nicaragua. Qualitative analysis of the interviews and secondary materials including blog posts and videos reveals that staff, travelers and community members feel that they benefit from the exchanges that take place during solidarity travel. However, the study participants also articulated a number of concerns and issues with the practice of solidarity travel, including the limited nature of ongoing contact between travelers, coordinating organizations, and the communities that are visited while in Nicaragua. The experience of solidarity travel provided participants with a greater understanding of the connections between Nicaragua and North America, and a critical self-awareness for young travelers in particular, as many were experiencing the Global South for the first time. The successful translation of that exposure and awareness into activism is less certain and is identified as an area for future improvement of the overall solidarity travel experience. Overall, this study contributes to the emerging literature on solidarity travel by comparing three organizations with different missions and methods, and showing how solidarity can be enacted in a variety of ways through travel. Through the inclusion of three distinct groups of participants, this study also highlights similarities and differences related to the way solidarity travel is experienced by members of these groups.

&#039 / production Of Space! In The Post Earthquake Region: Three Cases Form Duzce

Demirel, Sinem 01 January 2006 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis is about the processes and attitudes behind building production as it is about architecture as such, and it aims at understanding architecture&amp / #8217 / s critical capacity and its relation to wider society. In this context, the differing attitudes and orientations in the construction of the residential environments in D&uuml / zce after the two unsettling earthquakes that took place in 1999 are believed to provide a study field, where the relationship between architecture and different economic, political and cultural structures that constitute civil society can be examined. Against this backdrop, our discussion will concentrate on the specific housing concerns and solutions proposed by three different groups, namely: &amp / #8216 / Solidarity Houses Project&amp / #8217 / realized by the villagers of G&ouml / lyaka, settlement proposal for G&ouml / lyaka prepared by the Project Implementation Unit of Prime Ministry and the struggle of the D&uuml / zce Depremzedeler Dernegi for tenants&amp / #8217 / rights. The examination of these case studies will be based on our reading of Henri Lefebvre&amp / #8217 / s &amp / #8216 / Production of Space&amp / #8217 / and particularly his analytical categories: physical, mental and social space. The relation between this theoretical framework and the case studies will be a reciprocal one, in which the analysis on the three examples of house production will both utilize the analytical framework and be an instrument for understanding it. Although considered separately, the concepts we discuss in each chapter are inextricably interwoven. At the end what we aim to outline is a more total picture of the character of the redevelopment processes after the 1999 Marmara earthquakes and represent architectural practice in its complexity.

Building Resiliency: The Role of Faith-Based Organizations in the Trauma-Affected Community of Santa Fe, Texas

Jordan, Mandy M 08 1900 (has links)
On May 18, 2018, a shooter entered Santa Fe High School, killing eight students and two teachers. Using ethnographic methods, this research examines the role of faith, rituals, language, and symbols in the trauma-affected community during the response, recovery, and resiliency efforts as perceived by the Santa Fe community and those impacted by the tragedy. Qualitative data collected from 100 individuals ages of 17-84 illustrated how historical trauma, community culture, and faith-based organizations impact community resiliency and how illusions of a homogenous view of the community left many feeling shocked, divided, forgotten or muted.

These two experiences show us that the social movements constantly need new ways of carrying out their actions in order to renew participation and strengthen the social organization towards the creation of a political community. Both the community bank, that broadens the range of the discussion on the endogenous circulation of money and on the possibility of higher consumption in the area, and the self-managed joint effort (mutirão), which intensifies the access to rights and to participation, are, however, experiences that struggle with huge difficulties and are perhaps weak as alternatives to the capitalist processes of sociability. In spite of that, they show themselves to be, in the very core of the system, capable of transforming previously precarious realities.

Pires, Aline Suelen 02 March 2010 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-06-02T20:39:12Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 2876.pdf: 550698 bytes, checksum: ec1c46a83b1ba656f1c98f6306c85004 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-03-02 / Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais / Since the end of the nineteenth century, when they started to become popular, cooperatives are generating important debates. From the 70's, with the crisis of the Fordist production and the restructuring of production in the world, with the unemployment s growth and the loss of social rights linked to the formal work, the cooperativism resurfaces now, renovated as a alternative proposal of "other economy" within capitalism and as a possible overcoming. We analyzed the perception of workers in Solidarity Economy s cooperatives. We tried to see how the workers understand the meaning of self-management, how she(he) internalizes the ideas proposed by the Solidarity Economy s movement. At the same time, we decided to analyze gender relations in the cooperatives studied, which are formed mostly of women, and if the involvement with the proposal resulted in changes in daily work and home life. We investigated workers of projects of the Technological Incubator of Popular Cooperatives of the Federal University of São Carlos. The research studied three cooperatives in the city of São Carlos through the techniques of interviews and observation. The results show a gap between the actual practices and the movement s proposals, which indicates the character "under construction" of the Solidarity Economy in Brazil. Gender relations have not changed, remaining the same of the ordinary companies.

Gleice Maria Mattos de Vasconcellos Luz 17 June 2005 (has links)
This thesis is an analysis of the issues surrounding the return of young couples to the maternal or paternal house caused by unemployment and / or difficulty in entering the labor market. These issues are ranged from the precarious material conditions of the family until the unemployment effects on family relationships. In finding to this situation, an initial question arose: Would unemployment be leading a new dynamic in the organization of urban middle-class families? That is, would re-living as a support strategy when unemploymetn was happening be causing the forced co-residence between two or more generations, thereby altering the trend toward family nuclearization, started from the '70s? Moreover, could the dependence between generations be compromising the autonomy of individuals in the family? These were some of the questions investigated in this research.

Europeiska företagsråd i svenska koncerner : en rättsvetenskaplig studie av EWC-regleringens betydelse för arbetstagarinflytande och styrning av multinationella koncerner / European works councils in Swedish corporations : a study of the legal regulation of EWCs and its significance for worker influence and governance of multinational corporations

Hästbacka, Rasmus January 2017 (has links)
The subject matter of this licentiate thesis concerns the two EU directives on European Works Councils. The analysis is confined to the Swedish implementation of these directives into Swedish law. The thesis defines the term "EWC regulation" to encompass both the Swedish levels of EWC legislation and the regulation of EWCs by EWC agreements themselves. The overall objective is to gain an increased understanding of the function of EWC regulation. This requires a normative analysis of both EU and national law as well as an empirical study of the application. The thesis includes a number of agreements on EWCs based on the Swedish legislation and their application in corporations based in Sweden. Three multinational corporations in the health care sector, financial sector and metal industry have been selected. The focus lies on the regulation's practical significance for worker influence and corporate governance. A distinction is made between rules on worker participation (in law) and worker influence (in practice). As a point of departure the author combines the theory of reflexive law with concepts borrowed from the fields of management studies and economic history. The methods used consist of doctrinal legal interpretation and semi-structured interviews. The key findings run as follows. The EWC regulation generates worker influence by enhancing the knowledge and unity of worker representatives. The regulation facilitate corporate governance by strengthening the legitimacy of management, improving the decision basis and channels of communication. The worker influence is, under proper circumstances, strong in issues such as reorganizations, reassignments, health and safety. The influence is weaker in situations of relocation, outsourcing across national borders and other forms of regime shopping.

Empowerment et économie sociale et solidaire : étude de cas d'organisations féminines en Afrique de l'Ouest / Empowerment and social and solidarity economy : case studies of women's organisations in West Africa

Ben Lazrak, Asma 13 February 2015 (has links)
The objectives of this work are to analyse different practices of social and solidarity economy that enable African women to move beyond vulnerability. Income generating activities involve both an increase in individual and collective empowerment of women, and in addition - further development of their communities. African women are key agents of change through individual actions, but most of all - though collective once. In Africa, as well as in various countries of the South, female organisations are not only a place for women to gain some economic independence, but a genuine areas of freedom and exchange, that allow them to come out of isolation, to learn new skills, and to have more esteem and self-confidence as individuals in their own rights alongside the men in a patriarchal societies. It is through these activities that women strengthen their role, their social status, and reinforce their femininity and presence Women's organisations, in different degree, manage to gain some success. The positive impact of women's participation in these groups suggests that the individual or collective empowerment of poor women is possible by opting for alternative solutions based on practical and collective actions that develop more capacity and greater freedom. In this sense, Sen's capability approach is relevant to the extent, that it reinforces the importance of women's activities within the social economy, thereby strengthening the gains in terms of empowerment. The main function of female economic organisations is to enable women members to be able to support themselves through mobilisation and redistribution of resources and therefore help them out of poverty. These women who are active in organisations and are often responsible for the family, often seek most financial means to meet their family and social obligations. Through our work, we have identified further significant gains for women as individuals, as well as in a collective, but these gains are less quantifiable. The context of crisis and insecurity gives women's activities a very important social role especially in the South, where the feminisation of poverty is important.

Vnímání seniorů generací ve věku od 15 do 50 let / Perception of the seniors by generation in age from 15 to 50 years

ABRMANOVÁ, Adéla January 2011 (has links)
I have compiled a diploma thesis "Perceptions of senior citizens by the generation aged 15 to 50 years." I am going to introduce this thesis in brief. I consider this topic as very up-to-date, which the whole of our society is concerned about. And this will become more important with the continuing population aging and the changing financial situation of the state. Currently, there has been discussion about views and attitudes of young people, who consider the seniors to be a burden on the country's economy and society. Young people think that seniors live at their expense. The thesis is divided into two parts, theoretical and practical. In the theoretical part in individual chapters the current situation and basic terms concerning the issue are introduced. The state of seniorhood is explained, the status of seniors in society and family in the past and today is described. The issues of aging and changes in human behavior after retirement are dealt with. Everything what may influence society´s perception is described. Intergenerational conflict and solidarity between individual generations are dealt with. In the practical part, I conducted a research survey in the generation 15-50 years of age, the aim of which was to identify the views of young people on seniors. The results of the questionnaire survey were assessed, processed and put into the practical part. My own results were compared and discussed with other authors. I selected two objectives of the thesis. The main objective of my thesis was to study and clearly process the given issue. The other objective was to determine real relationships between younger generations and seniors, the views, opinions and attitudes of younger generations to seniors and to old age in general and to process the results in order to get a survey accessible and well arranged for the use of the general public. To obtain the data, I used the questionnaire method. The thesis could serve as professional literature, the issue of the relationship between young and older generations is compiled comprehensively. This thesis could bring benefits to society as a whole. It should be read by all members of society, who may find in this manner a lot of new information and interesting views, based on which they could change their opinions and views about the senior generation. The thesis would contribute to the promotion of intergenerational solidarity, which, in my opinion, is present in society, but gradually begins to fade away.
