Impact of Regulatory Burden on Small Community Banks in Pennsylvania

Gregory, Teresa L. 01 January 2016 (has links)
Community bank managers are struggling with the implementation of the many new regulations promulgated over the past several years. The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore strategies community bank managers in Pennsylvania use to implement new financial regulations. The population of interest included all community banks in Pennsylvania. For purposes of this study, a community bank was defined in terms of an asset size less than $500 million. Two community banks in Pennsylvania were selected, and 3 participants at each bank were interviewed. The participants included the chief executive officer, the compliance manager, and a mortgage lender. The transcribed interviews were analyzed using keyword frequency comparisons and cluster analysis. Member checking and triangulation of interview data and public company data (e.g., press releases) were employed to ensure trustworthy interpretation of data. Four major themes were identified, including leadership, training, collaboration, and organizational structure. Systems theory was the conceptual framework that guided this multiple case study. The board of directors, senior managers, and compliance managers can apply the recommendations to improve the approach to regulatory implementation in their organizations. The implication for positive social change includes the potential to sustain or increase the availability of loans to small businesses in the United States.

These two experiences show us that the social movements constantly need new ways of carrying out their actions in order to renew participation and strengthen the social organization towards the creation of a political community. Both the community bank, that broadens the range of the discussion on the endogenous circulation of money and on the possibility of higher consumption in the area, and the self-managed joint effort (mutirão), which intensifies the access to rights and to participation, are, however, experiences that struggle with huge difficulties and are perhaps weak as alternatives to the capitalist processes of sociability. In spite of that, they show themselves to be, in the very core of the system, capable of transforming previously precarious realities.

A Study on the Impact of Technological Advancement on Community Bank Performance

Ong, Andre 01 January 2018 (has links)
This study investigates the impact of technological advancement in community bank lending, more specifically, how online financial product and service offerings affect community banks' performance. Community banks, institutions with assets under $1 billion are praised as relationship banking specialists, are important source of credit to individuals and businesses. Their productive performance is highly beneficial for the economic development of the communities and customers that they serve, yet community banks' competitive power against large banks has become increasingly more challenging. Technological advancements radically shift all production and service based industries, including the banking industry and its institutions' offerings. The increasing use of online products and services provides convenience for bank customers, and eventually creates more demand, and boosts up the industry competition. Regarding the impact of technological advancements in the banking industry and the specific position that community banks carries, the question arises of "How does a changing technological landscape affect community banks' performance?". This study aims to contribute to the understanding of how these institutions can better utilize their limited resources to improve their performances.

Credit Strategies for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises Within a Changing Environment

Wilkinson, James Edward 01 January 2017 (has links)
Access to credit in the changing environment is the primary challenge to survival for many small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) owners. The purpose of this multicase study was to understand how seasoned small business leaders in wholesaling and manufacturing in Northwest Arkansas strategically adapted to obtaining access to credit in an environment of bank mergers and acquisitions, disruptive information technology, federal and state regulations, and globalization. The conceptual framework that grounded this study was adaptive leadership and change management. Although, small business leaders prefer to obtain credit from community banks through relationship financing, leaders of SMEs can adapt to the challenges of the changing environment. The data collection process involved face-to-face, onsite, semistructured interviews of 5 participant SME owners selected via purposive sampling throughout the Northwest Arkansas region. Analysis of the transcripts involved coding data into groups using keyword identification and regrouping the data into themes. Themes that emerged from the study included the importance of formalizing a capital strategy, utilizing alternative forms of financing, and responding and adapting to change. Also, small business owners use financial software to provide technical, financial reports, and pro forma statements with variance analysis. Positive social change from the findings of this study may develop through SMEs' potential to increase job provision thereby benefiting workers' families with better employment opportunities, enhancing public infrastructure through greater tax revenues, and generating a long-term, viable, sustainable future to the region's public education through an increased tax base.
