Det är ju bara serier : En studie om journalistik i grafiska noveller / It´s just comics : A study of journalism in graphic novels

Lindahl, Christopher, Ankersen, Dag January 2010 (has links)

The purpose of this thesis was to study how journalism is represented in graphic novels, what roles are represented and if journalism in graphic novels is good or evil. The goal was also to see if there were any similarities or differences over a period of time. This was done with a qualitative analysis of two graphic novels written and drawn by Frank Miller. When we did the analysis we focused on pictures and texts that directly had a connection to the journalistic role. We used a semiotic approach to analyze the two graphic novels were our main focus where on what connotation, what denotation and what stereotypes could be found.

This study establishes that stereotypes are used to represent journalism in a negative way. Journalists are also the cause of more harm than good. When you put journalism into the narrative technique of good versus evil they are clearly evil and use their power to undermine the heroes of the story. The journalists are put into stereotypical roles such as the female news reporter who is all looks and no brain, or the overzealous male reporter who tries to tell the truth but no one will listen to him.

It is also clear that journalism is represented in a way that describes it as a phenomenon that spreads panic because the journalists in many cases come to their own conclusions without having all the facts. The study also shows that over a period of fifteen years the role of the journalist is the same but the way they are represented is very different. Because of the larger rivalry from other news sources the media is forced to find new ways to attract an audience. Therefore the newer graphic novel portrays a sexualisation of the journalistic role.

Nyberg, Lovisa, Jonsson, Nina January 2007 (has links)

The purpose of this BA-thesis is to examine how many girls, boys, women and men who appear in children’s programmes in the years 1978, 1992 and 2007. We have also studied if they are described as typical gender role stereotypes and we have looked at the power conditions between girls and boys, women and men and children and adults. From the results we then examined the changes through out the years. We have made this possible by choosing two days each year when most children were watching the programmes.

With the gender role theory we have brought up the important issue of the fact that men appear more frequently in media then women and by doing so the media preserve men as the standard gender. You can also apply this theory on the condition of children and adults, where the adults are the norm in the generation system.

We have analysed the contents of the programmes by using a quantitative method and our results showed us that the equality between the sexes hasn’t improved as much as we had hoped for. The year 1978 sometimes had the same results as 2007 and at some parts the year 1978 was better than 2007. The year 1992 was not equal in any part except in the equality between the sexes in the starring role.

The role of emotions in stereotype threat : how emotions are implicated in the deleterious effect of stereotype threat on performances of stigmatized individuals ?

Chateignier, Cindy 12 December 2011 (has links)
The aim of this research is to examine the emergence of emotions in stereotype threat and its implications on performances of stigmatized individuals. We have two purposes. First, we want to show that stereotype threat situation triggers not only fear but also anger in stigmatized individuals. We postulate that endorsement or non endorsement to the group stereotype would respectively determine the emergence of fear or anger. Five experiments confirm our hypothesis. Then we examine processes through which fear and anger have deleterious effect on performances in stereotype threat situation. We suggest that fear and anger have deleterious effect because of the action tendencies and the cognitive processing of information that they trigger. Fear triggers an avoidance action tendency which could prevent stigmatized individuals to get involved in the task. Anger triggers an approach action tendency and a heuristic processing of information which could lead to rush towards the task without processing information deeply. Three experiments confirm our hypothesis. This research suggests an alternative explanation to the deleterious effect of stereotype threat on performances and highlights the importance to take into account the behavioral and cognitive consequences of emotions in the stereotype threat situation.

January 2008 (has links)
The study intended to understand how stigmas and stereotypes of lesbianity influence women's discourse regarding the construction of their subjectivations. I begin with a critical review of the history of the construction of those stigmas and stereotypes, so as to access the power relationships that perpetuate them to the present. Amongst these relationships, I found that the machismo, a result of the viriarcal system, is supported by heteronormativity and heterosexism. Independently of people's bonds and of the form of power relationships, both regulate the construction of these women's gender, sexual and political identities by means of the stigmas and stereotypes that are applied to them. My study suggests that, within a macho social context, women that relate to other women erotically and affectively remain invisible. Such invisibility not only perpetuates homophobic discourses, but it also makes heteronormativist pattern of relationships among people possible and intelligible. The study is grounded on the data collected by means of interviews with five middle class, high school graduated lesbians. Three of them were aged between 18 to 25, and two aged from 40 to 50 years old. Four were white and one was mulatto. The results suggest that these women's discourses are crossed by those stigmas and stereotypes. There are also variations in these influences due to generational issues and the ways they elaborate the mourning of their heterosexuality. The results of this study are...
