In the works of the tetralogy of gândara of Carlos de Oliveira, everything happens as if the author – thenarrative authority, or some other demiurgic intelligence – had opened since Casa na Duna, a terriblePandora’s Box from which escape evil incantations immediately dissolved in a blurred writing. The narrativecategories are buildings dedicated to degradation by the pernicious effects of temporality. Spells, writing of thetetralogy of gândara speaker calls the divinatrice mediation of the interpreter, only able to exorcise his evildesigns. Here is the poignant irony which is capable writing of Carlos de Oliveira, proclaimed forcefully andworn by playful artefacts: time, actants games, space games, life and death, in which the promise of a universaldecadence shines his omens. This work analyzes in a mode both semiotics, symbolic and allegorical, themechanism of the schemes of the decline. We resort Phillip Hamon these on the semiotic status of thecharacter, cratyl’s theories on onomastic, the phobia of the indiscipline movement of Durand and Malebrancheassumptions, and also Ricoeur reflections on the strategies of utopia.

Chaïm Soutine appears to many as one of the most enigmatic painters of the Paris School. He finds his own place in this moment of artistic rupture that initiates the 20th Century and carries well despite of him the banner of expressionism and Jewish art. However the requirement for this « act of painting » ( cf. Daniel Arasse) goes far beyond any claim of belonging to a any community. It is the pace of his life of exile and renegade he lodges on the space of the canvas in a moment of paint which pierces and in a gesture of colour which animates him. This last cursed painter links his vocation of painting to a native traumatic scene and to the expression of an unfinished cry. This scene echo to a structural melancholy that carries him on one and the other of the two banks of the river Styx and makes him face to the emptiness of the Thing. This confrontation will be various issues: he will become so either genius or assassin of his paintings.

Experimental and theoretical simulation of sublimating dusty water ice with implications for D/H ratios of water ice on Comets and MarsMoores, John, Brown, Robert, Lauretta, Dante, Smith, Peter January 2012 (has links)
Sublimation experiments have been carried out to determine the effect of the mineral dust content of porous ices on the isotopic composition of the sublimate gas over medium (days to weeks) timescales. Whenever mineral dust of any kind was present, the D/H ratio of the sublimated gas was seen to decrease with time from the bulk ratio. Fractionations of up to 2.5 were observed for dust mixing ratios of 9 wt% and higher of JSC MARS-1 regolith simulant 1-10 mum crushed and sieved fraction. These favored the presence of the light isotope, H2O, in the gas phase. The more dust was added to the mixture, the more pronounced was this effect. Theoretical modeling of gas migration within the porous samples and adsorption on the excavated dust grains was undertaken to explain the results. Adsorption onto the dust grains is able to explain the low D/H ratios in the sublimate gas if adsorption favors retention of HDO over H2O. This leads to significant isotopic enrichment of HDO on the dust over time and depletion in the amount of HDO escaping the system as sublimate gas. This effect is significant for planetary bodies on which water moves mainly through the gas phase and a significant surface reservoir of dust may be found, such as on Comets and Mars. For each of these, inferences about the bulk water D/H ratio as inferred from gas phase measurements needs to be reassessed in light of the volatile cycling history of each body.PACS CODES:98.80.Ft Isotopes, abundances and evolution (astronomy)], 64.70.Hz Sublimation], 68.43.-h Adsorption at solid surfaces]

Investigations of the Martian Mid-Latitudes: Implications for Ground IceDundas, Colin Morrisey January 2009 (has links)
This dissertation examines several questions in Martian surface processes relating to water or ice using a combination of geomorphology and modeling. I first examine sublimation of ice from new small mid-latitude craters with freshly exposed ice imaged by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera. I discuss the theory of sublimation by free convection and describe a model that improves on the standard version used in the Mars literature. This model shows some differences from experimental data, but this appears to be because experimental conditions do not accurately capture the sublimation regime appropriate to the Martian surface. I use this sublimation model in concert with a thermal model and calculate sublimation rates at the sites of freshly exposed ice. Calculated sublimated thicknesses of one or more millimeters during the period when HiRISE images show ice imply that this ice is relatively pure, not pore-filling. The ice table thus revealed appears consistent with a model of the Martian subsurface in which relatively clean ice overlies pore-filling ice.Pingos are hills with cores of ice formed by freezing of liquid water under pressure. Possible pingos on Mars have been much discussed because they would have significant implications for Martian hydrological processes. I surveyed HiRISE images across a broad portion of the Martian surface searching for fractured mounds. Such features are candidate pingos, since pingos often develop surface fractures as they grow. A small number of Martian landforms, not previously identified, are morphologically consistent with pingos; however, landforms that appear related to these do show morphological differences from pingos. Other origins are possible, particularly since it is difficult to produce the requisite hydrologic conditions for pingo formation. Previously proposed pingos on Mars lack surface fracturing and are unlikely to be pingos.

The main objective in the present work was to research the concept of sublimation, as well as its impasses, through Eve, Renata, Joey and Flyn, four characters brought by Woody Allen in his movie Interiors (1978). These characters were taken as clinical cases and met the sublimation of Freud, so as to achieve a mutual fecundation between psychoanalysis and the film work of Woody Allen, between sublimation and the problem of the impasses experienced by these characters in their processes of sublimation - sometimes stagnant, sometimes stillborn, or confused with the idealization -, brought on a recurring basis by the filmmaker through countless characters in his films. The question that led to this dissertation was \"What Woody Allen has to teach us about these characters on the labor of sublimation and how Freud would help us to understand these figures brought about by this prolific filmmaker?\". Aiming to answer this question, initially some possible historical approaches were established between psychoanalysis and art, as well as between psychoanalysis and cinema, outlining the justification and the research strategies used. Then some approaches between Woody Allen and psychoanalysis were established, discussing his life and his work, as well as contextualizing the film Interiors in his filmography. Secondly, the study of the sublimation was initiated in the context of the Freudian work, trying to recover its passages about this concept, and also some changes experienced over time by some fundamental psychoanalytical concepts that took effect on sublimation design along the Freudian theory. The ideas of Freud about sublimation were collated with the work of some thinkers who have studied the sublimation and have tried to make a contribution to its conceptualization. The work of Joel Birman - psychoanalyst who discusses the sublimation as a sublime action, as a complex psychic process that involves subjective structuring, rupturing with narcissistic fixations object, creating new objects of drive satisfaction and new forms of subjectivity, and demands a grieving process of the ideal self that goes through the experience of helplessness and achieving of the feminine position - was explored more sharply. Afterwards, building on the work of Freud and comparing it with the thought of Joel Birman, and once presented the \'clinical cases\', Eve, Renata, Joey and Flyn met the sublimation of Freud, in an attempt to articulate the clinical cases and its impasses in sublimating to the psychoanalytic problematic of sublimation, in a reciprocal fertilization. It was considered throughout this research that Eve, Renata, Joey and Flyn metaphorize the impasses of creation through sublimation that one can experience, as idealization; anguish before the realization of our mortality, and consequent creative paralysis; the beauty as an escape to the realization of castration and that can be confused - in appearance - with the sublime; and the narcissistic identification that freezes the subject in one melancholic position and prevents creating

O estético e o ético na psicanálise: Freud, o sublime e a sublimação / The aesthetic and ethical in psychoanalysis: Freud, sublimation and the sublimeRocha, Guilherme Massara 12 November 2010 (has links)
The relationship between psychoanalysis and works of art, the philosophy of art, and the aesthetic disciplines have been the subject of innumerable studies. Since its invention, the metapsychology of Freud has discussed the artistic experience. Beyond merely serving as a methodological exercise for the purpose of illustrating psychoanalytic theses and propositions or demonstrating the plausibility of Freudian ideas, revisiting the topic of artistic expression succeeds in extending their conceptual range. Art serves a legitimately heuristic function in Freudian works. At crucial points in the establishment of particular metapsychological theses, the configuration and consolidation of the theory receives fundamental support from revisiting the interpretation of artistic expression and experience. It is true that this involves elements which are extraneous to the clinical investigations of Freud, but this does not diminish their importance to the shape of psychoanalytic theory. Due to the extent and complexity if its insertion into metapsychological theory, the concept of sublimation reunites many diverse Freudian concepts concerning the effect of subjective idiosyncracies upon the way in which impulses are directed to a target, and the artistic experience serves as a paradigm for this process. The concept is revisited here in an internal investigation of the works of Freud for the purpose of elucidating its principal theoretical origins and some of its nuance. However, for the most part, this discussion intends to connect the Freudian theory of sublimation to artistic elements that are expressed in, or underly, it. In the course of these expositions, there is a crucial dialogue between the concept of sublimation and modern philosophy\'s propositions concerning the sublime. The debate ultimately seeks to reveal how much the Freudian doctrine of sublimation and the Freudian understanding of art have been effected by, and employed, the ideas of Kant, Schopenhauer, and Schiller in its investigation of beauty and the sublime. If the concept of sublimation cannot be subsumed within the philosophy of the sublime, configured as one more of its chapters, it is nevertheless permeable to that discussion, with the view that, for motives and circumstances which herein one attempts to make evident, Freud never knew how to make it sufficiently explicit.

A escrita e o afeto: o impulso de João Guimarães Rosa em seu Corpo de Baile / The writing and the affect: the inventive impulse of João Guimarães Rosa in his Corpo de Baile.Santos, Wagner Dias dos 14 March 2011 (has links)
This work makes references to the relationship between affect and writing, taking as model the creative impulse of João Guimarães Rosa, one of the great authors of the Brazilian literature. I assume that the writer of Corpo de baile (1956) deliberately exposes himself to the affects as a source of knowledge, form of creation and support for his art. Thus, I highlight from his textual production some (handwritten) trip notes, letters and intentions prior to the literary work. From publications, have been considered two novels from Corpo de baile: \"O recado do morro\" and \"Uma história de amor\". I make use of instinctual drive, sublimation, significant chain and transliteration concepts, linked to Freudian-Lacanian psychoanalysis, to show that Guimarães Rosa builds a dialogue with private worlds stimuli. I intend to argue for a hypothesis that this authors writing comes from his body, according to imprints or cuts that happened to his life, but especially by its peculiar readiness to inscribe himself to language as from the affects. In this work it is intended to respond to the following research questionings: How João Guimarães Rosa organizes the creating route of his two novels from Corpo de baile, aiming to be affected by experiences lived through the period of documents preparation in order to, at the time of writing, to transmute them into fiction? Thus, I emphasize in this thesis the following specific objectives: a) a description of some resources used by Joao Guimarães Rosa, when he organizes his writing route, b) the use of a theory that considers the instinctual drive and affect as driving forces for inventing a process of creation. It is, therefore, to point out the unique way an author let to be inscribed by language, standing in a methodical and patient positioning in the seizure of the word and poetry.

Rock weathering, erosion, and sublimation rates of ancient buried ice in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, AntarcticaLamp, Jennifer Lynn 21 June 2016 (has links)
The inland region of the McMurdo Dry Valleys (MDV) of Antarctica represents a subzero, hyper-arid endmember for physical weathering, and is Earth’s closest terrestrial analog to the Martian surface. In order to document the style and rate of rock breakdown in this region, I conducted field-based, experimental, and numerical modeling studies of supraglacial debris (Mullins till) on Mullins Glacier. These investigations were designed to (1) quantify the rate and processes of physical breakdown of surface rocks on Mullins till, particularly of Ferrar Dolerite, (2) determine the efficacy of thermal stress weathering as an agent in rock erosion, and (3) examine the role of physical weathering in altering the sublimation of buried glacial ice.
Results from morphometric field surveys characterizing changes in rock shape, strength, and small-scale surface features, coupled with an iterative cosmogenic nuclide-based age model for Mullins Glacier, show that total erosion rates for clasts of Ferrar Dolerite on Mullins till range from 1.1 to 15 cm Myr-1. In situ field measurements of rock surface temperatures and local ambient conditions recorded at 15-second intervals, combined with a numerical finite element model elucidating changes in internal rock temperatures and associated strain, show that thermal stress weathering is sufficient to induce spalling by propagating existing microcracks of ≥1.1 cm that typically occur at the base of thin, mm-scale alteration rinds. The implication is that thermal stress weathering, previously undocumented in this region, may account for >80% of the total estimated erosion of Ferrar Dolerite. Furthermore, the spalled fragments (up to 5% of Mullins till) provide a negative feedback that slows the rate of subsurface ice sublimation and internal vapor diffusion. Experimental analyses in a controlled environmental chamber set with Mullins till and driven by local meteorological conditions measured in the field yields an average effective diffusivity of 4.5 x 10-6 m2 s-1 for Mullins till and annual rates of buried ice loss of <0.068 mm (assuming Fickian diffusion); these values are consistent with theoretical estimates, demonstrate the importance of physical weathering in modifying supraglacial deposits, and support arguments for persistent cold-desert conditions in the MDV for the last several million years.

Da experiência estética para a experiência psicanalítica: reverberações entre força, figura e sentido / From the aesthetic to the psychoanalytic experience: reverberations among force, figure and sensePereira, Adriana Barbosa 23 May 2014 (has links)
What does the aesthetic experience teach psychoanalysts? It is this wide question that opens the investigations in this work, which is supported by the hypothesis of an aesthetic dimension in the psychoanalytic experience. After setting up aesthetics and sublimations analysis problems, following Freud, aesthetics influences are gathered and some psychoanalytical concepts reanalyzed. The aesthetic and the analytical experiences are considered to be neighbors, facing homologous problems, related to: (1) contiguity between sensibility and intelligibility; (2) non-hierarchy between the representative regime and the aesthetic regime (presentative) in the signifying processes; (3) the rupture of meanings dimension within aesthetics. The relations between the aesthetic experience and the sublimation processes, according to activity and passivitys reciprocity in the creation and appreciation experience, suggest that these processes be studied in an adjacent manner. Following Pareysons formativitys aesthetic analysis and the intrinsic relations between form and content, the ever escaping relations between image and word, as well as the figurabilty/presentation (Darstellung) processes are investigated. The oniric processes legitimacy in the analysis of aesthetics and creativity in psychoanalysis is then recovered. In another dimension of aesthetics, an approximation between the sublime and Freuds Unheimlich, as an experience of rupture of meaning, is established. This rupture, under certain conditions, is at the bottom of re-signification experiences, on the verge of what is not represented and of what is non representable in experience. Figurablity/presentation is understood as transformations of mute inscriptions into eloquent forms. From these, effects on interpretation and clinical handling are implied, with a stress on constructions in analysis. Concerning sublimation, when articulated to the aesthetic experience, Freuds formulation that there is a relation between creative processes and childrens play is furthered developed. The aesthetic experience and childrens play aid Freuds analysis of sublimation from an adaptive de-erotized perspective. What is emphasized is not the supposed repressed content of such activities, but drives transformation, articulated to formal elements which participate both in childrens play and in artists work. A co-constitution relation among sublimation processes, psychic instances (ego, id, superego) and drives organization is proposed, through elementary games of presence and absence, continuity and discontinuity, identity and otherness. To play and sublimate are constitutive games of pleasure and mourning that articulate both the subjective object and the objective object in the experiences transitional area. On the other hand, limits of the sublimation processes and the participation of unlinking drive forces are recognized. The implications on analysis handling and interpretation in childrens analysis are also approached, with a privilege on the construction process of figures and fiction. It is considered, then, that this re-analysis of the relations between the aesthetic experience and sublimation contributes to highlight the aesthetic and creative dimension of contemporary psychoanalytical clinic
