Towards sustainable project management : A life cycle approach to evaluate the biopharmaceutical industry

Olin, Lovisa January 2020 (has links)
Adopting sustainability practices in both planned and current operations is increasingly important to many organizations. Due to increased awareness various companies are adopting life cycle thinking. For example, life cycle considerations from raw material extraction to final disposal of products or services are requested in environmental management system standard ISO 14001:2015. Octapharma is a biopharmaceutical company producing various medical products for the treatment of haematology, immunotherapy and critical care. The desire to incorporate environmental life cycle thinking into investment projects led to the research question of how this can be achieved at Octapharma in Stockholm. The objectives included a qualitative investigation of current environmental management strategies practiced in investment projects today. Secondly, a case study investment project was used to explore how one of the most commonly practiced life cycle management (LCM) tools, life cycle assessment (LCA), can be applied for the comparison of two alternative process technologies. The results showed that Octapharma today considers environmental aspects in some investment projects, such as construction, but it may be improved in other types of investment projects. Therefore, specific suggestions and modifications of the project model, in relation to life cycle management literature was developed for important checkpoints in the project management model. Lastly the case project comparative LCA showed that one of the technologies had a significant larger environmental footprint.

The designers are performing on several fronts and undertaking the search for world transformation. Sustainability is a value that these entrepreneurial designers often share. They are not entrepreneurship by necessity (they are not obliged to undertake to survive) or by opportunity (they do not engage on a market opportunity whose relationship between risk and return is clearly advantageous). This is an entrepreneurship through engagement, because companies are created because they believe in the cause of sustainability. Initially, in fact, sustainability is a trend of its business, being characteristic of the projects elaborated and implemented, and thus we identify the concept of sustainable project. Soon, however, they understand the difficulty of sustaining their business in a socioeconomic system that attaches secondary importance to sustainability. It becomes necessary a strategic elaborateness that allows a project sustainability, in which sustainability works with the project, not exactly as its trend, but as a substantive characteristic that guarantees its possibility. The objective of the dissertation is to understand the sustainable project in the processes elaborated by the designer-entrepreneurs understand the articulation of the processes of strategic design and entrepreneurship, in the scope of sustainability, elaborated by the entrepreneur-designers. To this end, the present exploratory research conducted in-depth interviews with designers-entrepreneurs. In addition to identifying and defining the aforementioned concepts, the research describes the characteristics of these enterprises and entrepreneur-designers.

[pt] FLUXO DE INFORMAÇÃO (IDM) CONSIDERANDO O CÁLCULO DA ENERGIA E CARBONO EMBUTIDO PARA REUSO DE AÇO ESTRUTURAL / [en] INFORMATION DELIVERY MANUAL CONSIDERING INCORPORATED CARBON AND ENERGY CALCULATION FOR STRUCTURAL STEEL REUSE.

CATARINA CAMPELO DE MENDONCA 06 May 2020 (has links)
[en] The necessity to reduce environmental impacts caused by construction industry promoted the creation of several government agreements around the world, quantitative measures of environmental impacts, new materials and new techniques and concepts for sustainable projects. Reusing materials with a high index of embodied energy, such as structural steel elements, is considered a valid practice to achieve this objective. Steel reuse is more sustainable than recycling in terms of carbon dioxide emissions, embodied energy, processing and, in some cases, transportation. The DfD (Design for Disassembly) is a concept allied to the practice of structural steel reuse and other building materials, planning future disassembly and contributing to the supply chain with reusable materials. Moreover, BIM provides a promising environment for the exchange of information throughout the buildings life cycle, as well as a new workflow in the conceptual design phase, which improves the decision making process in the context of sustainable constructions. This work proposes a new dynamic in terms of information exchange through an IDM (Information Delivery Manual) for developing a project with low levels of environmental impact using LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) and material reuse. A building s LCA study was used to develop the analysis and interpretation of environmental impact of projects conceived using the proposed IDM. The results indicate that the development of a sustainable project does not significantly interfere with the economic, practical and aesthetic interests and that including LCA is an important parameter in decision-making at the design stage to improve the environmental performance of the materials used.

The effect of entitlement and patronage on empowerment : a case study on a development project in Bangladesh

Eschbach, Philipp 10 1900 (has links)
Text in English / Sustainable development empowers poverty-affected people and communities by strengthening their capabilities. HRDP, a Bangladeshi development agency aims to achieve this goal by offering literacy classes and primary school edu-cation. In recent years, they have encountered obstacles to their empowerment strategy. Socio-cultural mediated expectations and moral obligations impeded the capability approach. This case study seeks to research the effects of entitlement and patronage on the empowerment of people in one of their projects. To be able to understand these structures and to determine possible implications for the asset-based ap-proach, 14 interviews and two focus-group discussions with local stakeholders have been conducted in the village of Gabtali, Bangladesh. Findings revealed that people desire to invest their own assets to increase their well-being, but expect assistance for this to happen. The study suggests align-ing expectations and obligations with the capability approach and also suggests a few ideas how this could be accomplished. / Development Studies / M.A. (Development studies)
