An Improved Wide-Band System Equivalent Technique for Real Time Digital Simulators

Liang, Yuefeng 07 April 2011 (has links)
This thesis introduces a new modeling approach that allows very large power systems to be modeled on a real time electro-magnetic transients (EMT) digital simulator with reduced hardware costs. The key step in achieving this is the development of an improved wide-band multi-port equivalent, which reduces a large power network into a small manageable equivalent model that preserves wideband behaviors. This approach has a foundation method that use a two part equivalent in which the high frequency behavior of the equivalenced network is represented by a terminating frequency dependent network equivalent (FDNE), with the low frequency behavior being modeled using a detailed Transient Stability Analysis (TSA) model that only models the electromechanical behavior. This approach allowed the modelling of medium size electric regions up to hundreds of buses in real time. This thesis extends the equivalent by implementing a reduced order of the detailed electromechanical TSA equivalent mentioned above. Coherency based reduction is used for the electromechanical model of the power network to be equivalenced, and is implemented as a Transient Stability Analysis (TSA) type electromechanical equivalent. A challenge in implementing the FDNE is to ensure that it is a passive network, as otherwise its inclusion could lead to unstable simulation. This thesis also introduces a practical procedure to enforce passivity in the FDNE. The validity of the proposed technique is demonstrated by comparing the approach with detailed electromagnetic simulations of the well-known 39 bus New England system and a modified 39 bus system with an HVDC infeed with coupling between the dc line and an adjacent ac line, in addition to a 108 bus ac system. The power of the method is demonstrated by the real-time simulation of a large system with 2300 busses and 139 generators. It has been shown that this approach has the potential to increase by at least one order of magnitude the size of the network that can be modeled and thus on a real time electro-magnetic transients (EMT) digital simulator with reduced hardware costs.

Etude et modélisation des effets de synergie issus de l’environnement radiatif spatial naturel et intentionnel sur les technologies bipolaires intégrées / Investigation and Modeling of Synergistic Effects in Integrated Bipolar Technologies Exposed to Natural Space Environment or Nuclear Detonation

Roig, Fabien 11 December 2014 (has links)
The space environment is a radiative concern that affects on board electronic systems, leading to failures. It is possible to distinguish two types of effects: the cumulative effects due to continuous deposition of energy throughout the space mission and the transient effects due to the single energetic particle crossing a sensitive area of the component or deposition of energy in a very short time in the specific context of an exo-atmospheric nuclear explosion. During qualification procedures for space mission, these effects are studied separately. However, the probability that they occur simultaneously in flight is significant. As a consequence, this work is about the study of the synergy between both cumulative and transient effects on various integrated bipolar technologies. The present results are used to provide some answers about potential changes of test methods. This work also evaluates the predictive capability of the previously developed model to reproduce accurately both the fast and the long lasting components of transients in circuitry and so to model transients' effects. This simulation methodology is extended to an operational amplifier from different manufacturers and for three different synergistic effects. The comparison between transients obtained experimentally during heavy ions, pulse laser and flash X experiments and the predicted transients validates the investigated methodology. The cumulative effects are taken into account by injecting the internal electrical parameters variations using irradiation exposure.

Evaluation of critical fault scenarios for operation with inherent overload in HVDC stations

Sander, Lisa January 2018 (has links)
The HVDC, High Voltage Direct Current, is important when it comes to upgrading the energy system to a renewable, sustainable and efficient system. This master thesis is investigating what is happening during the most decisive fault cases when the HVDC station is operating with inherent overload. An inherent overload operating area is defined and simulations are performed in PSCAD/EMTDC to study the transient behavior of the fault currents and overvoltages.

Transient-fault robust systems exploiting quasi-delay insensitive asynchronous circuits / Sistemas robustos a falhas transientes explorando circuitos assíncronos quase-insensíveis aos atrasos

Bastos, Rodrigo Possamai January 2010 (has links)
Recent deep-submicron technology-based ICs are significantly more vulnerable to transient faults. The arisen errors are thus also more critical than they have ever been before. This thesis presents a further novel benefit of the Quasi-Delay Insensitive (QDI) asynchronous circuits in terms of reliability: their strong natural ability to mitigate longduration transient faults that are severe in modern synchronous circuits. A methodology to evaluate comparatively the transient-fault effects on synchronous and QDI asynchronous circuits is presented. Furthermore, a method to obtain the transient-fault mitigation ability of the QDI circuits’ memory elements (i.e., the C-elements) is also proposed. Finally, mitigation techniques are suggested to increase even more the Celements’ transient-fault attenuation, and thus also the QDI asynchronous systems’ robustness.

Simplified Model For Simulation of Fault Ride Through at Hydropower Units

Söderström, Sebastian January 2021 (has links)
As new requirements for grid connected generators were implemented, the requirements for evaluating the Fault Ride Through capabilities of the generators became stricter. When refurbishing a power unit, proof that the power unit meet the requirements must be submitted to the authorities. Performing simulations of the Fault Ride Through of a production unit is an extensive process and requires advanced simulation models and tools. Therefore, the need for a simplified tool for estimating the Fault Ride Through capability arose, which is what the project produced. Also, knowledge of which production module characteristics (such as the generator parameters, transformer and excitation system) have the largest effect on the Fault Ride Through time, would also be beneficial. Through the creation of Simulink simulation models of two hydropower stations and a sensitivity analysis of station parameters, the relative effect of the parameters on the Fault Ride Through time is estimated and implemented into a time independent Fault Ride Through time estimation tool, based on the Equal Area criterion. The purpose of the time-independent Fault Ride Through time estimation tool is to provide an insight into the approximate transient stability of the hydropower station and which parameters affect the performance the most. Simulations show that the transient reactance of the generator, the generator inertia, the transient time constant and the transformer inductance have the largest effect on the Fault Ride Through capability. The results show that a simplified tool cannot estimate the Fault Ride Through as accurately as a time-domain simulation model can.

Schaller, Andreas 09 September 2013 (has links)
