The analysis of the occupational career of party organizers in the night entertainment in the city of São Paulo has provided a very representative empirical cut on the flexibility expected of contemporary workers. We observed the forms of entry and maintenance on this informal market, mainly associated with the possession of a differentiated social capital, mobilized in accord to the cultural prescriptions of the consumer groups. We also analyzed the subjective and objective efforts demanded in their daily activities, that mobilizes great physical and mental efforts and dominate large periods of their personal schedules, and yet are positively reinterpreted as values of entrepreneurship and creative freedom. We observed how their identity as workers were constructed based on this differentiated service business, selling a product characterized by its symbolic value. We interviewed 8 Promoters from different musical styles, using semi-structured and free interviews, conducted in person or through virtual platforms of interaction, which are the spaces par excellence of the dissemination and promotion of their own parties.

January 2003 (has links)
The objective consisted to realize if the Physical Education teacher's understandings and/or pedagogical practice reports contribute or might contribute to leisure education. The present research was based on action-research's theoretical references due to its qualitative perspective. This methodological focus permitted us to accomplish eight collective meetings in order to intervene in a group formed by four Physical Education teachers from public and private schools at Rio Claro city. About one month after the group's last meeting, we have individually interviewed the teachers. The meetings' analysis led us to conclude there are four educative implicit and explicit contributions in the investigated teacher's reflexions and action reports which are synthetized in the following categories: the school place and the classes organization; school and Physical Education concepts; Physical Education's contents and attitudes' formation; Physical Education's pedagogical explicit practices for leisure education. The final interviews showed that Physical Education and leisure education relations provided during the meetings made it possible to construct and improve knowlegdes that were incorporated in the Physical Education classes as possible contributions to the students' leisure time out of school. Moreover, we point out another sorts of repercussions which were emphasized by the teachers and are related to satisfaction by participating in this research, by meeting new people, by exchanging experiences and by reflecting about their own professional and personal lives in a leisure dimension context. / Mestre

Development of REFERQUAL : an instrument for evaluating service quality in GP exercise referral schemes

Cock, Don January 2006 (has links)
Evidence concerning the benefits of physical activity to health is well established. Despite this extensive evidence, the vast majority of the population remains insufficiently physically active to elicit meaningful health gain. Exercise Referral Schemes (ERSs) have been operating in this country since the early 1990s. However, despite continuing expansion in the number of schemes nationwide, `success', in terms of long-term adherence to physical activity by clients has not been achieved. Extensive evidence in the literature suggests service quality may impact on clients' decision to adhere. However, this concept has not previously been applied to ERSs, assuring the originality and contributory potential of this investigation This thesis aims to investigate the factors affecting retention rates in ERSs. Furthermore, this investigation seeks to develop an understanding of the relationship between service quality and adherence in this setting. Five schemes comprising diverse operational management systems are evaluated via a new assessment tool, completed by 1024 respondents. This quantitative data is supported and extended by qualitative data drawn from a range of key stakeholders collected via 10 interviews and five focus groups. Results suggest clients do not generally perceive service quality to be problematic; however, significant differences between adherence groups and schemes offer insights into issues affecting retention. The nature of the relationship between client and exercise professional appears to represent one of the most notable `keys' to retention. Many clients seek a medical solution to health problems and perceive an exercise professional to be the poor relation of a GP. The fundamental importance of the potential for other exercisers to contribute to the support of clients is also highlighted and discussed. Site-specific issues, time to exercise and client stereotypes of the gym environment also feature as possible determinants of adherence. Considerable further research is needed to build upon these results. Possible avenues for such studies are also discussed.

Plasma Vitamin C Supplementation and Physical Activity in Young Men

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: Vitamin C is a micronutrient with many important physiological roles. It can function as a reducing agent, a free radical scavenger, and an enzyme cofactor. Much research has examined the potential of vitamin C supplements to enhance exercise capacity in trained athletes; however, little is known regarding the effects of vitamin C supplements on the promotion of leisure-time physical activity in the general population. This area deserves attention since 1/3 of Americans have below adequate vitamin C status, and since aversion to exercise, fatigue, and altered mood states are the earliest signs of poor vitamin C status. This study analyzed the effect of supplementing 500 mg twice daily of vitamin C on self-reported leisure-time activity levels and mood states in young men. Twenty-nine healthy, young men, aged 18-35 years, were stratified by age, BMI, smoking status, and plasma vitamin C concentrations and assigned to either a control (CON) or experimental group (VTC) for the 8-week randomized, double-blinded, parallel arm trial. Subjects were instructed to keep track of their leisure-time physical activity by filling out the validated Godin Leisure-Time Exercise Questionnaire weekly for the entire study. In addition, subjects took the self-administered Profile of Mood States (POMS) at baseline, week 4, and week 8 to observe mood states. Plasma vitamin C concentrations were analyzed at the initial screening, week 4, and week 8 of the study. Plasma vitamin C concentrations significantly differed by group at week 4 and week 8. Furthermore, vitamin C supplementation significantly increased self-reported mild, moderate, and strenuous activity levels during the 8-week trial. Overall, total physical activity scores increased nearly 50% in the VTC group as compared to 18% in the CON group (p=0.001). However, mood states were not significantly impacted by vitamin C supplementation during the trial. This study provides the first experimental evidence that supplementing 500 mg of vitamin C twice daily can be effective in increasing leisure-time physical activity in healthy young men. This study, however, was unable to link improvements in physical activity rates to improved mood states. Since sedentary behaviors have been implicated in the rise of obesity in the U.S., further research should be conducted to substantiate the finding that vitamin C supplementation increases physical activity. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S.
