[en] THE MINEFIELD OF REPRESENTATION OF THE OTHER IN CONTEMPORARY BRAZILIAN CINEMA / [pt] O CAMPO MINADO DA REPRESENTAÇÃO DO OUTRO NO CINEMA BRASILEIRO CONTEMPORÂNEOEDUARDO MIRANDA SILVA 31 March 2017 (has links)
[en] The thesis turned its attention to questioning the role of the filmmaker as a translator of social demands in contemporary Brazilian cinema, specifically 1970 s anthropological approach of narrative film. The work investigates the construction of the first-person narrative in Brazilian cinema after the so-called Retomada, taking into account the criticism of the voice of God and the use of the third person, which are predominant in the speech of the Brazilian movement Cinema Novo: That is, a period in which the arts were in line with a collective and egalitarian notion of nation. In order to discuss the relationship between aesthetic approaches and policies with regard to the statement of these practices, the thesis focused on films based on literary works that raise the question of the place of the narrator (Hour of the Star, Behind the Sun and City of God) and pairs of films from which one can characterize the pendulum of contemporary production between the filmmaker-intellectual who apropriate to themselves the role of talking about and for each other, and the filmmaker-ethnographer, that provides room for the speech of another class. The films Elite Squad and News From a Personal War, Carandiru and Prisioneiro da grade de ferro, and finally Cinco vezes favela and 5X Favela - Now by Ourselves were analyzed in the light of the issues raised.

[en] The thesis proposes to follow the paths of contemporary writers and filmmakers in
a world of increasing dilution of the boundaries between artistic mediums and
media. The current context of intense permeability and mobility between the
audiovisual and written languages and continuous penetration of market
mechanisms in the interaction between the two medias categories offers severe
challenges to some of the consolidateds definitions of the fields of art. Among
them, the notion of authorship especially passes through a process of progressive
instability. From the analysis of the work of Marcal Aquino, Beto Brant and
Lourenço Mutarelli, this research will investigate the impact of the current context
on the works of these artists and how each may respond to the dilemmas that the
new situation presents to them.

[en] POSTERS OF BRAZILIAN CINEMA: IMAGE AND THE SOCIAL IMAGINARY / [pt] CARTAZES DO CINEMA BRASILEIRO: IMAGEM E IMAGINÁRIO SOCIALSIMONE ALBERTINO DA SILVA NUNEZ 24 October 2014 (has links)
[en] The study Posters of Brazilian Cinema: Image and the Social Imaginary reflects on the imagistic universe contained in the posters of Brazilian cinema, and attempts to identify recurrent (icons) or reference images that could have contributed to building the social imaginary about the country in national theater, seeking to identify the origins of Brazilian social identity, how the social imaginary was formed and if it could be represented by certain images from posters of brazilian cinema. The reflection is mainly developed from the relations between society and culture, the field of art and its production systems. Such relationships provide evidence of the fact that the representations are constructed through social history, from symbolic configurations that define its final form and from pre-established concepts – conventions – that promote ease of recognition for the observer , and gives the image producers some control over its use. The existence of visual culture highlights the cultural practices within society, while the cultural industry uses conventions to form a set of images that ends up defining the modern visual universe, making it possible to notice when an image tries to escape tthe established patern. The thesis of this research is set on a path that attempts to theoretically define what would constitute the Brazilian social identity in relation to the types of representation of the Brazilian people and the country; it encircles thoughts about the national cinema industry and their mechanisms of distribution and dissemination, which determine, among other factors, the design of posters and also the types of image representation; and finally, the social representations and images of movie posters belonging to brazilian national films. As part of a universe where representations are based on foreing imagery of films, Brazilian cinema is closed between a practice that seeks to mimic the international productions and its image patterns, or find elements of Brazilian culture to try to build an image of it own, reinforcing myths and reaffirming the national culture. Posters of Brazilian cinema finds itself in the same paradox: repeat graphic patterns consolidated by the international film industry and imposed by foreign distributors, or seek a chart pattern that can be considered national.

A condição - instável - e a
A intenção é
francês do Grand Guignol?
[en] This dissertation reads the horror in the film maker s José
Mojica Marins work. The unstable condition and the
uncommon career of this dammed film maker in the history of
the Brazilian movie industry passes as a compulsory
evanescence logic, where the director was forced to explore
new fields: text, television, radio and, more recently, the
Internet, in order to keep on insisting/investing in the
arduous task of making scripts, producing and releasing
his more than 30 films. The intention is to understand why
his history happened this way. What similarities and
differences does it keep with the classics? To what
extent can he be considered as a descendent of the French
theatre of the Grand Guignol? Much more than analyse narrow
concepts about the fantastic literature approaching
fictions ingredients, the idea is to make an analysis of
the horror in its contemporary and cultural aspects
relating it to the director s biography.

[en] THE SEARCH FOR LUÍS SÉRGIO PERSON: A MOVIEMAKER AGAINST THE MAINSTREAM / [pt] EM BUSCA DE LUIZ SÉRGIO PERSON: UM CINEASTA NA CONTRAMÃO 1960 - 1976CANDIDA MARIA MONTEIRO RODRIGUES DA COSTA 27 November 2006 (has links)
[pt] A proposta dessa pesquisa é situar a obra do cineasta
paulista Luiz Sérgio Person
(1936-1976) no cenário cultural brasileiro dos anos 1960.
O documentário que sua
filha, Marina Person, realiza para entender a perda do
pai
é o ponto de partida do
estudo. O filme Person (1999) traz questões sobre o
resgate da memória, a constituição
da identidade e a subjetividade da narrativa
autobiográfica. Do filme emerge a obra
média urbano, vítima do
desenvolvimento econômico. Em sua trajetória destacam-se
os debates travados sobre o
conceito nacional-popular, o movimento do Cinema Novo, o
cinema de autor e ainda o
cinema do Terceiro Mundo. Tais debates colocam Person em
confronto com o grupo
cinemanovista e enquadram o universo desse estudo. / [en] The purpose of the research is to evaluate the work of São
Paulo moviemaker Luís
Sérgio Person (1936-1976) in the Brazilian cultural
scenario of the 1960s. The starting
point was the documentary currently being made by Person´s
daughter, Marina Person,
for understanding the loss of her father. The documentary
Person (1999) discusses
his artistic legacy, his identity as a moviemaker and the
subjectivity of the
autobiographical streamline. It also places under the
spotlight the work of a unique
moviemaker who managed to introduce a new concept to the
Brazilian cinema of his
time. Person opens the path to discuss the problematic
meanders that surround the
urban, middle-class individual as a prey to the
contingencies introduced by the
economic development. Highlights of those new paths
include discussions on the
national-popular ideas, the Cinema Novo trends, the
concept of a cinéma d´auteur
and the so-called Third World cinema. All these questions
contribute to place
Person´s output against the mainstream of his time, at the
same time they outline the
boundaries of the present study.

[pt] A CALIGRAFIA DO OLHAR DE KARIM AÏNOUZ: POSSIBILIDADES POLÍTICAS DE UM CINEMA NECESSÁRIO / [en] THE CALLIGRAPHY OF KARIM AÏNOUZ S VIEW: POLITICAL POSSIBILITIES OF A NECESSARY CINEMAANA PAULA DAUDT DE LIMA BRANDAO 23 September 2019 (has links)
[pt] Esta pesquisa procura analisar a filmografia do diretor Karim Aïnouz sob a perspectiva política.
[en] This research s purpose is to analyze director Karim Aïnouz s filmography under a political perspective. Cinema is an art form born through modernity – it s the result of technological innovations of the 19th Century. It served the avantgarde utopias, the revolutionaries against oppression, as one of the means to
enlighten the masses. In Brazil, Cinema Novo is the paradigm of the national and cultural emancipation struggle. In today s context, when the great modernity ideals seem to be weakened and a post-utopic thought is installed, the relationship between cinema and politics is reconfigured. The absence of both a common goal and of totalizing solutions from the moviemakers gives the impression of an atomized struggle with doubtful efficacy. Thus, there s an attempt to investigate the extent in which Karim Aïnouz tries to instigate the viewers to change the state of things (Rancière). His personal trajectory, the recurring themes and scenes, as well as the aesthetics of the films, will be mapped to try to recognize not only singularities, but also similarities with other contemporary filmmakers, especially Brazilian ones – not in search for an uniformity but questing dialogues and generational convergences. The main focus is in the relationship between art and politics inferred from each film s narrative, the character s selection and the
questions that Aïnouz tries to pose to the audience. It s also in the aesthetics and in his personal process, through which the calligraphy of Aïnouz view can be unveiled. The way he realizes his film s political possibilities, as well as the questions he poses to society and moviemaking, helps discussing the challenges of cinema against the stagnated mentality of the post- time where we seem to be living now (Rancière). It will also be discussed some resurgences (survivals) of Cinema Novo and how they are reworked in the analyzed films.

[pt] NARRATIVAS À DERIVA NO ROTEIRO CINEMATOGRÁFICO BRASILEIRO / [en] NARRATIVES ADRIFT IN THE BRAZILIAN CINEMATOGRAPHIC SCREENPLAYCRISTINA GOMES 28 January 2020 (has links)
[en] This thesis intends to investigate the construction of the narratives adrift in the screenplay of the Brazilian fictional cinematographic screenplay, observing from the artistic conception of the screenwriter, often influenced by the literary narrative until the artistic execution of the conditioned direction not infrequently by practices of the real, for documentary and / or performative procedures. In the last decade, the theme of drift permeates Brazilian cinematography by printing variations and specific characteristics to the fictional narrative and to the audiovisual creative process. From one narrative to the next, from one fable to the next, we have the reconfiguration of drift in the fictional universe that goes from wandering to immobility: characters begin in continuous displacement, but gradually they alternate ambulation and closure, physical perambulation, and existential closure. In order to reflect on the process of audiovisual writing and its direct interference in the construction of such narratives, the screenplay is placed as the central focus of the research. The thesis focused on works with different creative processes both in terms of writing composition and the filmmaking process. Five cinematographic screenplays are analyzed here: I Travel Because I Have to, I Come Back Because I Love You (2010), by Marcelo Gomes and Karim Ainouz; The Silver Cliff (2011), by Karim Aïnouz; Castanha (2014), by David Pretto; The Man of the Crowds (2014), by Cao Guimarães and Marcelo Gomes and Where I Grow Old (2016), by Marília Rocha.

imprensa especializada. Tal preponderância, contudo, surpreende diante da
posição periférica ocupada pelo estado no cenário nacional. O objetivo desse
[en] The Pernambuco state is one of the main cinema producers in Brazil,
standing also for the high quality of its movies, internationally recognized by film
critics and festivals. This status, however, surprises when one take into account
the state s minor position within the Brazilian Federation. The main goal of this
research is to understand the phenomenon through the historical analysis of film
production in Pernambuco, pointing the agents and the dynamics responsible for
the state s cinema field building.

[pt] CURAR COM CURTA: A PROGRAMAÇÃO, CURADORIA E AURA DE CURTAS-METRAGENS SELECIONADOS EM TRÊS FESTIVAIS DE CINEMA BRASILEIRO ENTRE 2017 - 2021 / [en] CURAR COM CURTA: THE TRANSFORMATIONS, PROGRAMMING AND AURA OF SHORT FILMS SELECTED AT THREE BRAZILIAN FILM FESTIVALS BETWEEN 2017 - 2021LEONARDO ROCHA MARTINELLI SILVA 30 August 2022 (has links)
severa e polarizante crise político-social.
político-sociais do país.
cinema nacional / [en] This study discusses the rise of digital cinema and the role of curatorship in
the programming and selection of contemporary Brazilian short films in three film
festivals: Cine PE - Festival do Audiovisual, Festival de Brasília do Cinema
Brasileiro and Mostra de Cinema de Tiradentes. The time frame takes place
between the years 2017 and 2021 due to the encounter between a progressive
popularization of access to digital sensors with the immersion of Brazil in a
severe and polarizing political-social crisis. The study resumes and analyzes the
notion of aura, as proposed by Walter Benjamin in his essay The Work of Art in
the Age of Mechanical Reproduction; and it also takes up the idea of
programming and curation as forms of post-production, as proposed by Thomas
Elsaesser. One of the objectives is to analyze the change in scenario - favored by
the entry of digital technology - where the Brazilian short film starts to have a
gradually more significant symbolic and cultural value. The three aforementioned
film festivals were chosen because their curatorship or event conditions
underwent major upheavals due to the different political and social contexts in the
country. Lastly, it is relevant for the study to discuss the role of curatorship and
festivals within the process of historical and artistic legitimation of films as well
as the relationship between filmmakers and the construction of an imaginary
about national cinema.

[en] This work analyses Brazilian horror cinema from 2008, when José Mojica Marins, creator of the iconic Coffin Joe, launched his latest film, Encarnação do Demônio. The set of movies that follows is not only heterogeneous and diverse but also growing in number of films. To get an idea, in 2008 three films were released, including Mojica s, as opposed to nine films in 2018. From this set of movies, what interests me and what I highlight are those films that somehow mobilizes the genre as a critic or social comment. I discuss in this work, besides Encarnação do Demônio, the films Trabalhar Cansa (2011), As Boas Maneiras (2017), Mormaço (2018) and Bacurau (2019). By this corpus, I develop a reflection on the uses of the narrative genres in Brazilian cinema of the first decades of the 21st century.
