[en] CAUTIOUS REDUCTIONIST OR SCIENTIFICIST USURPER? DANIEL DENNETT´S THEORY OF CONSCIOUSNESS / [pt] REDUCIONISTA PRUDENTE OU USURPADOR CIENTIFICISTA?: A TEORIA DA CONSCIÊNCIA DE DANIEL DENNETT

GABRIEL JUCA DE HOLLANDA 28 May 2007 (has links)
[en] Daniel Dennett, one of the most controversial contemporary philosophers, advances a materialistic theory of consciousness, according to which human subjectivity can be totally reduced to physical phenomena. Some philosophers, such as David Chalmers and John Searle, consider this perspective an imposture, a harmful and distorting kind of reductionism. Dennett´s theory has also attracted criticism from materialistic philosophers such as Paul Churchland, and from enthusiasts of husserlian phenomenology. This work aims to investigate how well Dennett´s theory does when facing such objections.

[en] HESIOD AND DANIEL: THE RELATIONS BETWEEN THE MYTH OF AGES AND THE NEBUCHADNEZZAR S DREAM OF A COMPOUND STATUE / [pt] HESÍODO E DANIEL: AS RELAÇÕES ENTRE O MITO DAS CINCO RAÇAS E O SONHO DA ESTÁTUA DE NABUCODONOSOR

DIONISIO OLIVEIRA SOARES 06 September 2006 (has links)
[en] The analysis of the correspondence between Hesiod and Daniel turn out to be, surprinsingly, proficient, specially with regard to the myth of ages, in the Works and days, belonging to the first, and the dream of compound statue, in the book that has the name of the second. The analogy shows that, retaining the proportions due to each one in terms of setting, language and culture on the whole, the contact points occur from the common sources, having repercutions on the framework and literary gender. The aim of this research is to verify in which measure Hesiod would have influenced the book of Daniel, having in mind that Greek poet lived at about six centuries before the Jewish editor´s book. In this way, the research begins analysing and translating the Greek myth, following always the stages of the historical-critical method. Next, is made a study about the origin and features of the apocalyptic gender that brings the two texts close to each other. Subsequently, the analysis and translation of the extract of Daniel to, finally, summarize the proximity between them, which, anyway, has already been occuring along the research.

[en] THE ZOMBIE ARGUMENT IN THE PHILOSOPHY OF MIND: ARE PHYSICAL ZOMBIES LOGICALLY POSSIBLE? / [pt] O ARGUMENTO DOS ZUMBIS NA FILOSOFIA DA MENTE: SÃO ZUMBIS FÍSICOS LOGICAMENTE POSSÍVEIS?

GUSTAVO LEAL TOLEDO 25 May 2005 (has links)
[en] The zombie argument came to be in 1974, in a paper by Robert Kirk, but it was David Chalmers` book, The Conscious Mind (1996) that gave it a prominent place within philosophy of mind. This argument`s main objective, and that of its several different versions, is to refute materialism. In short, it says that, if it is possible to think of a physical zombie, a being physically identical to a human being, but lacking qualitative conscious states - that is, lacking qualia - then such states cannot be physical. If such states were physical, the zombie would have to lack something. This way, all that would be necessary to refute materialism would be to show that such a being is conceivable. However, several critiques arose and the main author of those, Daniel Dennett, has been gaining support in his defense of the view that zombies are logically impossible, that is, are unconceivable.

[en] AT THE WORLD S END: THE MAKING OF THE MODERN POLITICAL IMAGINARY FROM THE NAVIGATION ACCOUNTS OF THE XVI AND XVII CENTURIES / [pt] NAS MARGENS DO MUNDO: A CONSTRUÇÃO DO IMAGINÁRIO POLÍTICO MODERNO A PARTIR DOS RELATOS DE NAVEGAÇÃO NOS SÉCULOS XVI E XVII

BRUNO MACCHIUTE NEVES DE OLIVEIRA 10 December 2018 (has links)
[en] Since when Christopher Columbus first came into the Americas, the specter of private violence stood nearby. This thesis argues that the accounts of navigations left by the privateers, pirates and buccaneers of the XVI and XVII centuries were crucial parts for the making of the European imaginary about the New World, its inhabitants, and the European place in it. We explore the diversity of accounts that, each in its own way, represents the political dilemmas that came to a close at the Modern Estate and the Modern political subjects. This process, thought, should not be represented as an unambiguous tale of progressive civilization. On the contrary, the reading of the accounts of navigation reveals a much more ambiguous and frequently contradictory experience. The scope of this thesis encompass the XVI and XVII centuries. During this time, the late medieval social and political institutions that mediated the relations between society and individuals were at a steady decline. The discoveries made by the Spanish and the Portuguese and the following re-imagination of global geography only aggravated the problem, and from the ashes of the late medieval system modernity arose. We argue that the pirate figure was a central actor in this process acting from the margins. During this thesis we explore the accounts of Andre Thevet and Jean de Léry, Francis drake, Anthony Knivet, Alexander Exquemeling and the novel Robinson Crusoé, from Daniel Defoe. Each one of these accounts brought something new to the complex operations that were taking place in those transitional centuries.

[pt] A APOCALÍPTICA NO ZOROASTRISMO, JUDAÍSMO E CRISTIANISMO: UMA ANÁLISE DAS RELAÇÕES ENTRE O AVESTA, DN 12,1-3 E MT 27,51B-53 QUANTO À IDEIA DA RESSURREIÇÃO / [en] THE APOCALYPTIC IN ZOROASTRIANISM, JUDAISM AND CHRISTIANITY: THE RELATIONS BETWEEN THE AVESTA, DN 12:1-3 AND MT 27:51B-53 REGARDING TO THE RESURRECTION IDEA

[en] It is well known that the legacy of the Persian culture in the Jewish postexilic period cannot be despised, mainly in the end of this period, just when the apocalyptic literary genre was flourishing. This thesis analyzes the individual resurrection regarding to the possible relationships between the Persian religion and the intertestamental Judaism, as well as the Early Christianity. So, the work begins by reviewing the origins and development of apocalyptic phenomenon. Then, it focalizes on the literary links that could reveal the connections between Persian and Jews: the tradition of the Old Avesta (notably the Yasna 30:7 and the Yasht 19:11.89) is collated with the text of Daniel 12:1-3. Afterward, the possible connection between Daniel 12:1-3 and Matthew 27:51b-53 takes place. The aim of this work is to ascertain the extent to which the text of Daniel would reflect a development within the Judaism based on the apocalyptic Iranian features. After this, verify the extent to which the origin of the tradition revealed by the Matthean pericope would reflect the individual resurrection from the tradition of Daniel. In spite of the own features of each text, the contact points are quite likely from the social setting, literary gender and the aim of the texts, mainly between Daniel and Matthew. The Matthew s pericope would reveal a tradition drawn from danielic tradition, where the resurrection was seen as a reward to the Jews who died because of the divine righteousness. Like the editor of the text in Daniel, the evangelist reveals a community in conflict, now with the formative Judaism. His community presents a belief in a messianic kingdom that meets the expectation of an eschatological era that begins with the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
