[en] The improvement of digital tools for the treatment of images provokes an
increasing interference on the process of creation of editorial and advertising
works. For this reason, it is possible to witness in photography a phenomenon we
call pictorialisation. We mean by this word that nowadays we experience
images in which it is becoming more and more difficult to discriminate elements
belonging to the photography from those introduced afterwards. Such
phenomenon has an aesthetic result, here defined as (aesthetic of the
unattainable), that finds no correspondent in the real world. The purpose of the
present work is to analyze the behavioral and social-cultural consequences of this
specific form of representation of the world, as well as the authorial participation
of the parts involved: the media industry as a productive structure, its workers and
its spectators.

[pt] A NORMA E A FORMA: A MEDICALIZAÇÃO DA MULHER NA PUBLICIDADE DE FÁRMACOS DA DÉCADA DE 1920 / [en] THE NORM AND THE FORM: THE MEDICALIZATION OF WOMEN IN DRUG ADVERTISING IN THE 1920SPAOLA SARLO PEZZIN 18 October 2023 (has links)
progresso nacional. / [en] In the 1920s, the Republic underwent several structural changes as a result
of epidemic diseases and adaptation to the new urban way of life. In Rio de
Janeiro, as the country s capital, the changes were more pronounced and very
duly recorded in illustrated magazines. In these records, the texts, illustrations and
photographs demonstrate that, if on the one hand the new customs stimulates
sociability, providing the female presence in public spaces and certais freedoms,
on the other hand, medical discourses and fashion become more demanding
regarding the body feminine. In this way, health and beauty, disease and ugliness
are pairs that are often confused, as they suggest limits between what is
considered excessive and the ideal. These new demands for body adequacy
seem not to be just new needs conceived by medicine or fashion, but the result of
the deep development of adversiting techniques that acted to drain the production
of the pharmaceutical industry. Therefore, the promotion of supposed female
fragility – their illnesses and physical or behavorial defects - through drug
adversiting proved to be a particularly effective means in the effort to discipline
the female body. Through the analysis of medication advertisements published in
the Fon-Fon magazine in the 1920s, this study argues how they acted as
instruments of coercion, educating and medicalizing the female body,
disseminating ideals of femininity and sexuality, family, health, hygiene and
national progress.

[en] KEEPING UP WITH FASHION: FROM WOMEN S EMANCIPATION TO THE YOUTH CULT IN THE 60S: THE IMAGE OF FEMININITY IN THE PAGES OF A CIGARRA / [pt] EM DIA COM A MODA: DA EMANCIPAÇÃO FEMININA AO CULTO À JUVENTUDE NOS ANOS 60: A REPRESENTAÇÃO DA FEMINILIDADE NAS PÁGINAS DE A CIGARRALUCIANE GARCIA MOREIRA 30 July 2018 (has links)
[en] This study aims to analyse the Brazilian women s press in the 1960s. We chose to concentrate on the column Keeping up with fashion, conveyed in A Cigarra magazine between October 1963 and June 1968. Based on the analysis of the fifty-seven editions of the column, we observe how, under the influence of journalist Walda Menezes, a new speech was formed, capable of spreading the concepts related to the 60 s, as the cult of youth, the new way of exhibiting the body through fashion and sexual liberation. Rather than report the changes depicted in images published in A Cigarra, we chose to portray a relationship between the late nineteenth century and the decade in question, two periods of time when the female roles were under scrutiny. Through the image of femininity in colonial Brazil, we came to their image in the pages of A Cigarra, to investigate how identity is created or not between reader and publication.
