STAY : Mindfulness and Space

Yoo, Seung-Hoon January 2020 (has links)
The state of the art technology has been penetrated every corner of people's life. It is a path to transfer to a new way of life with the artificial intelligence and big data resources. The next generation of transportation should not only be a mobile accommodation or a productive studio. It should be a second home or a companion to tackle individual problems and social issues to pervade the physical and mental ground with the mindful and natural approach. This project aims to provide a whole new experience in a vehicle. The supportive concept should stay within people's daily life. The engagement of the time gap and spacial shifting is the role to make people's lives stable with the smooth flow of emotional state. The concept is about offering people to recognise the individual condition and the current situation for better mental condition and stable emotion. Ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being at all ages is essential to sustainable development. Social relevance and industrial background of the wellness have been witnessed these days such as rapid growth of the economy and researches about an urban mental issue. It is signs of an eagerness to pursue a balance of life and encouraging mindfulness. The thesis will deliver a proper solution to design a product with proposing in-car activity and experience to cover the original subject within the automotive design field. Benchmarking of existing therapeutic solutions was a one of the main approaches for the research. Every design solution is proposed based on the fundamental element of the current solution in the market such as the verified mental care process, resources and basic principle. Architectural trend and structure were adopted to propose the different atmosphere and composition to tackle the emotional element within the moving world. Manual drawing initiated the key idea. Quick sketch modelling was utilised to build the core design solution and to demonstrate the interior transformation. Digital rendering/modelling software and physical soft mockup were important tools to prove feasible movement, proper space and right volume for the conceptual activity and product. 3D animation film is the out-put for the final visualisation. The film contains how each design element works and all parts are in harmony for the mindful space. The vehicle frames the new role beyond the smart transportation. Through various fields of mental solution, the concept STAY takes a part of the role of consistent emotional care in daily life. Its preventative approach blends into people's lifestyle. It is a great opportunity for the automotive industry to be a userfriendly medium. The activity in the mobility is a tool to communicate between passengers and car. It is a flexible platform that users can tell their story and share their feelings to achieve a better emotional health. The STAY is equipped with the re-arrangeable objects and modules. It is about creating a personalised space to offer an opportunity to empathise with the present and how he or she feels.

Individuals’ strategies for wellbeing during the integration process - An empirical study of capabilities and opportunities through the eyes of Syrian refugees in the Canton of Vaud, in Switzerland

Widmer, Irina A. January 2020 (has links)
Integration concerns everyone in society as a constantly on-going process of constructing belonging and participation as a member of the group. The common objective of the process for individuals is to increase their subjective wellbeing, according to their individual values. However, refugees undergo an extreme case of integration, with all aspects of their life being impacted at once. Therefore, to gain more knowledge about the integration process from the perspectives of individuals, nine qualitative interviews were conducted with Syrian refugees living in Switzerland. This thesis then mobilises the capability approach to conduct a thematic comparison. The analysis revealed a common pattern among all interviewees which builds up into a 5-stages integration model, experienced by all interviewees in the same chronological order. Nevertheless, the personal capabilities and opportunities vary, resulting in different strategies to deal with a same context and similar objectives at a specific stage.

Exploring the relationship between perceived social support, stress and well-being of grandparents raising a grandchild with a congenital disability

Mantri Langeveldt, Anushka January 2019 (has links)
English: The increase in grandparents who take on the role of raising their grandchild has incited a growth in research, specifically on how this population is able to accomplish such an important responsibility at the later years of their life. However, not much is known about grandparents who are raising grandchild with a congenital disability. Grandparents may take on this role as either a co-parent or as a sole parent out of obligation towards their grandchild and their family. Grandparents from low socio-economic settings with corresponding challenging family and environmental circumstances are a particularly vulnerable group. As a result, these grandparents may experience heightened levels of stress, lower levels of well-being and increased social isolation, which may have a negative influence on their grandchild’s developmental outcomes. This thesis will focus on a study undertaken that aimed to explore the relationships between stress, well-being and the perceived needs for and helpfulness of available social support of grandparents raising their grandchild with a congenital disability. A total of 50 sole-parenting and co-parenting grandparents from various areas in the Western Cape took part in this adapted survey design in the form of structured interviews. An expected inverse relationship was found between caregiving stress and well-being. A further expected positive relationship was found between the grandparents’ perceived needs for types of support and their well-being, and, as hypothesised, an inverse relationship was identified between the grandparents’ perceived need for types of support and their stress. With further analysis, perceived need for types of support positively mediated the stress and well-being. Together with its clinical implications, this study also provides understanding regarding the implications of applying measures devised on foreign populations to the current South African context. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2019. / Centre for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (CAAC) / PhD / Unrestricted

Psychological wellbeing of adolescents with physical disabilities in inclusive community settings

Mpofu, Jabulani January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore the psychological wellbeing of adolescents with physical disabilities living in inclusive community settings in Zimbabwe. An inclusive community is one that aims to remove exclusionary practice within the community and promote community's systems that accept all people, regardless of their differences. A constructivist lived experience perspective underpinned this research, in which the researcher used multiple case studies to interact with the participants about their inclusion and psychological wellbeing as adolescents with physical disabilities. The 14 participants (nine males and five females) were purposively sampled. Data was collected through face-to-face interviews. Four themes emerged from the inductive thematic analysis of data sources. It was found that participants in this study were involved in various inclusive community activities available within their communities. The study also found that parent, the government, the community and donor communities were working together towards improving the lives of adolescents with physical disabilities in the communities in which they live. These stakeholders assumed different roles, such as providing disability awareness education, vocational counselling, and inclusive infrastructure and resources. The study also found that the participants encountered environmental restrictions in choosing inclusion activities in which to participate in their communities. The findings of this study have the potential to help the policy makers and researchers in inclusive communities to better understand the needs of adolescents with physical disabilities living in these communities. Furthermore, the current research has the potential to guide future research and develop future initiatives to improve the psychological wellbeing of adolescents with physical disabilities, thus improving their outcomes and quality of life. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2016. / Educational Psychology / PhD / Unrestricted

Measuring Comprehensive Wellbeing In Vermont: An Applied Economics Perspective

Gallagher, Katherine 01 January 2020 (has links)
While human “wellbeing” has historically been measured by economic growth, traditional metrics do not fit the challenges of the 21st century. Increasingly, decision-makers are adopting new guiding frameworks that encompass a more holistic understanding of wellbeing and progress including concepts such as ecological health and subjective wellbeing. Yet, the development processes and implementation challenges faced by these initiatives - as well as the opportunities for advancement - remain relatively unexamined for state and regional communities. This research considers the implementation and potential of existing wellbeing indicator systems in Vermont. With limited research on wellbeing measurement at the state or local level, this thesis provides novel insight using the state of Vermont as a case study. A better understanding of specific measurement tools, public and political interest in data collection, and shared experiences can help to fill the current gap in the literature and provide useful information for decision-makers. The first article contains a case study analysis of four wellbeing indices at the regional and state level in Vermont: the Vermont Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI), the Vermont Happiness Index, the Chittenden County Environment, Community, Opportunity and Sustainability (ECOS) project, and Vermont Act 186 (the “Outcomes Bill”). The case studies provide contextual background describing the impetus and development of each wellbeing initiative. The similarities, differences, and connections between each case study are further examined based on a general program theory of wellbeing measurement. The second article narrows in on one specific wellbeing index: the 2017 Vermont Happiness Index, a representative statewide survey of subjective wellbeing. The Index is composed of eleven domains of wellbeing, with each domain as an aggregation of 3 or more Likert-scale questions. The survey results are analyzed through statistical testing and recommendations for future research are provided.

Exploration of Factors that Contribute to the Financial Wellbeing of College Students

Brooks, Cecilia, Wheeler, Brandan, Phillips, Tommy, Hardman, Alisha M, Smith, Becky 03 April 2020 (has links)
Financial decisions among college students can be influenced by experiences with credit and debt services. Some college students may use alternative financial services (AFS; e.g., payday loans and check cashing services) to manage their personal finances to maintain a desired level of financial wellness. Fears about credit card usage may prompt the use AFS or overdraft on accounts due to a limited funds. Thus, some financial decisions, and ultimately, wellbeing may be influenced by financial knowledge, access to financial resources and attitudes towards financial services among college students. This study aims to explore factors (i.e., financial abilities, compulsive buying, materialism, knowledge, credit card, and AFS usage) that contribute to the financial wellbeing of college students. Initial findings from a stepwise regression show increased usage of credit cards (β = -0.08) and AFS (β = -0.08) decreases financial wellbeing while lower materialistic (β = 0.27) attitudes increases financial wellbeing.

D4Active : Helhetssystem för diabetesvård

Fransson, Anna, Stare, Andrea January 2020 (has links)
The D4Active concept, a complete diabetes care system, was founded by two former innovation engineering students. Autumn 2019 Andrea Stare and Anna Fransson took over the D4Active development and during the last year of development, the system has gone from a concept to a functioning wireless prototype system that can demonstrate the most important functions of diabetes care. D4Active provides a package solution consisting of only three essential units for diabetes care; a central communication device in the form of an interactive application, a divisible insulin pump and a sensor that can measure current insulin levels in the body. D4Actives application follows the strict medical regulations for health care products. The target group consist of people diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Living with diabetes means that the body cannot naturally produce insulin that keeps the body's glucose levels stable. Through market research and interviews with focus groups, consisting of diabetics, relatives of diabetics who are not often indispensable to the affected and diabetic nurses, the system is developed with the user in focus. We aim to promote good health by enabling a more active lifestyle for diabetics; with our application they can gather the necessary care units and data in one system. In short, the system reduces the number of care units for diabetics to carry with them, which increases mobility and the possibility of a more active everyday life. In addition, we have focused on developing and strengthening the units' lifecycle and durability by retaining the components that are unnecessarily discarded, when in fact they could be used more.

Infant wellbeing and monitoring: An observation of the Road to Health Booklet in Masiphumelele

Ngcowa, Sonwabiso 04 February 2020 (has links)
The South African government monitors and tracks the health of newborns and the growth of children. The Department of Health (DoH) does this monitoring using the Road to Health Booklet (RtHB). In this dissertation I analyse the use of the booklet in the township of Masiphumelele in Cape Town. The state produced booklet is intended for the child and mother as a patient-held medical health record. Liaw (1993) defines a patient-held record as notes or space provided on a document for the recording of follow up appointments for further investigation by medical doctors. The RtHB is used to record the child’s development, immunisations and HIV related information from birth to the age of twelve years. The dissertation results from ethnographic research with eight black Xhosa1 mothers and caregivers with children under the age of five years old. Mosley, and Chen, (1984), argue that in developing countries where standard child healthcare has been made available, children should survive the first five years of life. In my research, during the period of six weeks between July, August and September 2017, I followed the booklet in to Masiphumelele. From my observation and semi-structured interviews, looking at the state’s role of ‘pastoral’ care, child wellbeing and living in a township, and recording, under the theme of child wellbeing, certain concepts emerged. These concepts were state power, mothering, caring for children, responsibilisation, gender, kinship, fatherhood, child wellbeing knowledge production, social networking. In this dissertation I use ethnographic findings, accompanied by my own personal narratives. I argue that tracking child wellbeing through this booklet, the state exercises what Foucault (1982) referred to as ‘pastoral power’ in ensuring the wellbeing of the populations.
