La "Historia de Cataluña" de Rafael de Cervera

Genís i Mas, Daniel 09 November 2012 (has links)
Bernat Desclot finished writing his Chronicle at the end of the 13th century, but it was not published until 1616, in a Spanish translation written by the Barcelona historian and politician Rafael Cervera. The reasons for this late publication and the peculiarities of the historical moment, that was influenced by the tensions between Catalonia and Spain which then led to the War of the Segadors, have not been studied in depth yet until now. By means of this thesis we try to place the translation, significantly entitled Historia de Cataluña, within the rich and fruitful Catalan tradition of historiography. Specifically, the translation is most clearly in the Barcelona tradition of historiography which in the course of the decades 1620-1630 was responsible for rescuing from oblivion the great figures of the old Catalan empire, with clear praiseworthy intentions. We have included a critical edition of the translation, the first one that has ever been produced, as well as an appendix with complementary information about the author, his work and the Early modern period of Catalan historiography.

Abstract: This research aimed to investigate the relationship between speech and harmony in the repertoire of dramatic monodies of the seconda pratica. After considering the alternative of applying the ethos doctrine associated to the modes and examining the implications of the concepts of pathos, mutatio, and hexachordum, it locates the importance of the platonic thought as advocated by Marisilius Ficino in the cultural context that surrounded the emergence of the seconda pratica. Consequently, this research aimed to extract directly from the source of inspiration indicated by the followers of the seconda pratica, the Latin translation of Plato's work, the definition and attributes of the concepts of melodia and its constituent parts: oratio, harmonia and rhythmus. Considering the results of this investigation which pointed towards the importance of dialectics in the constitution of the platonic concept of oratio, this works sought to relate this concept to the harmonic practice of the repertoire examined as revealed by the work of Eric Chaffe. Taking the specierum copula as a possible common denominator between oratio and harmonia, five examples of dramatic monodies of the seconda pratica extracted from Jacopo Peri's and Claudio Monteverdi's works based on the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice are analyzed. The results of the analyses support the possibility that these composers have aimed, by means of well elaborated harmonic progressions, to give material form to the relationship between the ideas expressed by the text, the true essence of speech according to platonic thought. This was accomplished presuming that two triads separated by a fifth are considered contiguous, generating therefore a polarization of the harmonic spectrum over the flat/sharp axis. The outcome of this research points towards an increase of our perception over the extension and significance of the influence of Platonism in the seconda pratica movement.

The Man in the Moone". Some years before the outbreak of the English Revolution of 1640, testifying that in England the monarchy and the Puritans would control an allegedly republican regime, there were a series of errors that contribute to political conflicts that led to the Civil War. Most of them came from the pro-Spanish political assumed by the first two Stuart kings, James I and Charles I, who, among other things, did not support the Protestant classes in their trading enterprises and colonization of overseas markets, leaving the economic situation of the country negative. Faced with the imminent withering of the monarchy, the Anglican Episcopal Church founded on the alliance with the State, the danger of Britain becoming a Spanish colony, Francis Godwin composed around 1629 and his text published in 1638, the utopian fiction "The Man in the Moone". Summarizing all the religious conflict and glides early Stuart England that characterized the first 40 years of the seventeenth century, this study will aim to show that this fiction of Spanish Domingo Gonsales on your trip to the moon, in his passage by the fictional island of Santa Helena and China populated by Jesuits, debating the theories of Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler and Gilbert in the field of astronomy, sought a defense and protection of the Anglican Church and the Tudor monarchy that allied the Church to the State and favored the economy. Through disciplined and innovative example of the Jesuit mission in China in the early seventeenth century, Godwin will bring and warn the confused kings, that the output for the English internal and external conflicts was the investment in science, commerce, and now different from the Jesuits, in opposition to Spain and the Catholic medieval mentality and obsolete policy / Mestrado / Historia e Historiografia Literaria / Mestra em Teoria e História Literária
