The concept of individual in Theodor W. Adornos work and its relationship with Sigmund Freuds thinking

Rodrigo Marques Pucci 19 April 2011 (has links)
With the industrial society advent within the so-called late capitalism, which is determined by the dominance of administrative and technological rationality, a new manner of individuals configuration emerged, being characterized by irrational standardized individual attitudes, as well as by individuals with a fragile and less developed ego who are easily carried out by irrational totalitarian social movements. In face of this situation, it is necessary to bear in mind a psychoanalytic-based social psychology which must be related to the study of the relation between the individual and society, and also linked to a social theory that is in accordance with a certain historical movement. In order to contribute to the discussion of this issue, the aim of this research is the concept of individual in Theodor W. Adornos work and its objective is analyzing its relationship with Sigmund Freuds thinking, an important theorist who proposed the study of individual and his irrational attitudes. It is worthwhile to stress that the categorization of an individual is one of the main not to say the most important theoretical category of Psychology as a science and is presented, nowadays, as an essential element to any social transformation related to the principles of an autonomous society. The results of this research proved undoubtedly that Freuds psychoanalysis was relevant to Adornos thinking, mainly in some specific themes studied by the latter, that is, in both texts and specific researches related to denouncing irrational social movements in the twentieth century, as well as some other publications on contemporary mass movements, the authoritarian personality, the factors implied in the anti-semitism and the socio-psychological effects in the cultural industry. Some of Freuds reflections that were present in Adornos thinking are those which refer to mass psychology, libido, Oedipian complex, id, ego, superego and narcissism. Those studies were used by Adorno and somehow criticized by him to develop his own ideas in the scope of a social theory to understand individuals within the contemporary massified society and their irrational attitudes

Tradução como sobre-vida: no exemplo de Sobre a concepção das afasias - um estudo crítico, de Sigmund Freud / Translation as survival: in the example of On Aphasia a critical study, by Sigmund Freud

Emiliano de Brito Rossi 30 November 2012 (has links)
This PhD thesis shows the contemporary importance of the Freudian book On Aphasia a critical study, written by Sigmund Freud in 1891. It reveals that this book represents a fundamental psychoanalytical work that has instigate several debates within the Brazilian academic field in the interface between translation and psychoanalysis. Therefore five psychoanalytical concepts that have been first presented on it were chosen to argue their influence upon five Brazilian PhD theses dealing with the same issue. This work aimed to restitute to the Freudian book its deserved place in both the psychoanalytical realm and the Translation Studies. On that ground, it proposed a translation composed straight from the German language into Portuguese.

Spirituality in the fiction of Henry Rider Haggard

Senior, John January 2004 (has links)
Neither an unquestioning support for British imperialism nor a personal pre-Jungian philosophy were the driving forces behind Rider Haggard’s beliefs or his literature. These two concerns were secondary to the author’s fascination with the supernatural, a theme prominent in his era, but less so in our own. A declining faith in European religion provided the dominant focal point in Haggard’s work. Although there are important overtones of imperial concern and indeed points of Jungian significance in the texts, these are generally subservient to an intensive wide-ranging spiritual discourse. The place of Haggard’s work in history and its literary merit are thus misunderstood when his spiritualism is not taken into account. No analysis of the author’s work can be complete without first coming to terms with his spiritual ideas and then with their impact on other topics of significance to both the author and audiences of his day. The spiritual or religious aspect of his writing has been largely ignored because of its subtle nature and its relative unfashionability throughout most of the twentieth century in the critical and intellectual climate of the Western world. However, in the Victorian era, under the materialist impact of Darwin, Marx and industrialization, Europe's Christian God was pushed from centre stage, creating widespread spiritual hunger and anguish. In the resulting religious vacuum Haggard's overtures were of particular significance to his audience. In fact, when considered in terms of his immense contemporary popularity, the pervasive presence of spirituality throughout Haggard's works and in his personal writing gives some indication of the subject's enormous importance not only to the author, but to late Victorian society as a whole. In light of this Victorian significance, the spiritual element rises, by its constant presence and persistent foregrounding, to subvert not only the imperial and the Jungian, but even Haggard's overt adventure text by dealing directly with the underlying metaphysical crisis in Western society.

In this context Freud was without a doubt, one of the authors that more theorized on this thematic, through its metapsychology. Thus this work has as objective to know Freud s passage in the study of the religious phenomenon. For this, a bibliographical methodology was used and this work was divided in three basic parts: the first one presents an exposition of the facts of Freud s life related to the religion, as well as, it makes a characterization of predominant scientific conception in his time. The second part brings two Freudian s speeches on the religious phenomenon. These speeches are characterized by a scientific position, in which they find the marks of the direct influence of the conceptions of science front to the religion, under Freud s position. The other position is the analytical one, thus called, for it says of the psychoanalytic contributions of Freud to the study of this thematic. The third and last part argues new reading and theoretical constructions possibilities existed in the proper text of the authors psychoanalysis contributions. Such possibilities are present in its theory, because of the permanent dialectic movement that characterizes Freud s way of research and writing.

Escobar Tapia, Hector Omar 22 October 2018 (has links)
Tesis

Freud, Lacan, and the Oedipus complex

Van der Merwe, Petrus Lodewikus 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: “Freud, Lacan, and the Oedipus Complex” examines the Oedipus complex as found in the writing of Sigmund Freud and re-evaluated in the works of Jacques Lacan. Lacan‟s critical reappraisal of the Oedipus complex is captured in his 1969-1971 Seminars, published as The Other Side of Psychoanalysis(2007). This thesis examines Freud‟s overemphasis of the Oedipus complex, the myth of the primal horde and the consequent depiction of the father. Lacan doesn‟t dismiss the Oedipus complex completely, but treats it as a dream, and reinterprets it in light of Freud‟s The Interpretation of Dreams (1900). Lacan focuses on Freud‟s overemphasis on the father in both the Oedipus complex and the myth of the primal horde and illustrates how Freud is protecting the image of the father by depicting him as strong, whereas clinical experience shows that the father can be weak and fallible. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: “Freud, Lacan, and the Oedipus Complex” ondersoek die Oedipus kompleks, soos beskryf in die werk van Sigmund Freud en die beskrywing daarvan in die werk van Jacques Lacan. Lacan se kritiese herevaluasie van die Oedipus kompleks verskyn in sy 1969-1971 Seminare, gepubliseer as The Other Side of Psychoanalysis(2007).

Fodale Vargas, Luis Ernesto 06 February 2017 (has links)
The following work explores the development of the freudian concept “projection” in the framework of the mutual collaboration between Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. This research is framed in the line of historical-conceptual research and unconscious determinants in the concept’s development. We intend to explain, the theoretical and methodological differences between Freud and Jung from the beginning that make sense on the mutual collaboration in the development of that concept. With this purpose, we reviewed critically the correspondence between both authors, as well as each one’s works referred to the concept / Tesis

Understanding the Present: The Representation of Contemporary History in Ludwig Börne, Heinrich Heine, and Georg Büchner

Swellander, Michael January 2019 (has links)
Understanding the Present examines the thematization of the historical present in nineteenth-century German literary texts. In theorizations of political literature, such as Jean-Paul Sartre’s writings on “committed literature,” an emphatic concept of the present is a given. Of course, the present is a notoriously elusive temporality. The texts discussed in this dissertation, rather than focusing on accurate sociological representations of the present or an intensive rhetorical engagement in its political discourse, interrogate how the present can be evoked in literature in the first place. Understanding the Present discusses the forms privileged by certain authors in the representation of the present – prose, periodicals, drama – as well as the paradoxes such approaches posed. Rather than discussing these texts in terms of “operative literature” or “committed literature,” which has been a trend in scholarship since the 1960s, this dissertation approaches the nineteenth century from the perspective of so-called Gegenwartsliteratur. It does not claim the successful or unsuccessful political intervention of these texts, but rather shows how their authors imagined a literary intervention in the political present could occur at all. Chapter one shows Ludwig Börne’s popular magazine Die Wage: Eine Zeitschrift für Bürgerleben, Wissenschaft und Kunst, not only as surreptitiously carrying barbs against state-sanctioned censorship, as is most common in studies of the periodical, but as following a program of political historiography. Börne’s text is therefore subversive at a structural level and presents a poetics of representing the present. Chapter two shows how Heinrich Heine used the republication of his political journalism to reflect on the essential dynamic of understanding the present whereby one can only comprehend contemporary events with reference to the past and future. Georg Büchner’s drama, Dantons Tod, the subject of chapter three, presents a paradox similar to Heine’s, but through a little observed aspect of his citational practice, which I call “internal citation.” By showing his characters wittingly and unwittingly quoting each other in the play and repeating certain gestures, Büchner draws out ambiguities of authorship in political discourse and raises important questions about the experience of the present. Together, these three texts contribute to the study of political literature by interrogating the central notion of the emphatic present in it.

O movimento de Freud para a elaboração de um campo psíquico / Freud's movement to the development of a psychic field

Scandelari, Bianca, 1980- 11 September 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Luiz Roberto Monzani / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campoinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciências Huimanas / Made available in DSpace on 2018-09-11T21:21:00Z (GMT). The main objective is to expose, from a particular reading of the initial period of Freud's work, how did the field, in which sits a definition of the psyche established, accordingly to incipient psychoanalysis. The conditions responsible for reconsiderations of important notions will be highlighted, as will the particular treatment method that would be developed during the work. It will be deepened the internal discussion about what we might call the birth of psychoanalysis, and the uniqueness that is often attributed to its main concepts. This proposition is supported on the exhibition of the motion of particular articulation that Freud engenders in the theme of the psyche, from 1886 to 1894, in which the subject does not appear so well defined as it would in later texts, but in whose articulation of issues stood out the possibility of a 'psychic functioning mode' for neurosis. With this objective, it was outlined the transition of the explanatory mode that favors a predominantly physiological automatic characteristic to which it gradually added a functional modification of psychic dynamics, but without neglecting the former. This would be the case of logic established by the psychic mechanism of "counter-will" (1892) that would have contributed exactly by the shift that it provided to the focus of treatment, which subsequently developed into a 'relationship of symbolization' by 'conflict'. The reformulation of the functional aspect of hysteria, from this point of view, brought the number of constructions that would provide support to the basis notions for later concepts of resistance, transference and the development of free association. It is concluded that this particular and resilient operation, obtained in the gaps from the issues of healing and symptoms elimination, would have given authenticity to Freud's theory and specificity to his psychoanalysis, through constant transformation that Freud never stopped to promote to existing concepts in the field of medical research in which he attended / Doutorado / Filosofia / Doutora em Filosofia
