Národní identita a asimilace na pozadí společenských poměrů Plovdivu (18. - 19. století) / National Identity and Assimilation in Relation to the Social Enviromment in Plovdiv (18th - 19 th century)Staneva, Boriana January 2016 (has links)
Title: National identity and assimilation in relation to the social environment in Plovdiv (18th - 19th century) Abstract: The dissertation presented here arises from the perception of national identity being a kind of collective identity, which is designated by state (political) as well as non-state (cultural) nation-constituting symbols. I have tried to examine the permanence, stability and objectivity of these symbols in relation to the social environment in Plovdiv during the process of national awakening as part of Bulgarian national movement (18th - 19th century). During this period the central position in Plovdiv's social environment was held by a numerous group of people so-called Graecomen. Graecomen voluntarily renounced their Bulgarian-origin identity and exchanged it for a Greek identity. The origins of Graecomania may be found in the long-term cultural and economical co-existence of the Bulgarians and the Greeks. Since the Middle Ages there was a stable Greek community in Plovdiv, which dominated significantly the social climate. This dominance became the key motivating factor for the spread of Graecomen as Bulgarian burgers tried through the means of a favourable marriage to infiltrate the Greek community and in this way to achieve a higher social status. The highest level of intensity of...

The Atlantic Revolutions and the movement of information in the British and French Caribbean, c. 1763-1804Morriello, Francesco Anthony January 2018 (has links)
This dissertation examines how news and information circulated among select colonies in the British and French Caribbean during a series of military conflicts from 1763 to 1804, including the American War of Independence (1775-1783), French Revolutionary Wars (1792-1802), and the Haitian Revolution (1791-1804). The colonies included in this study are Barbados, Jamaica, Guadeloupe, Martinique, and Saint-Domingue. This dissertation argues that the sociopolitical upheaval experienced by colonial residents during these military conflicts led to an increased desire for news that was satiated by the development and improvement of many processes of collecting and distributing information. This dissertation looks at some of these processes, the ways in which select social groups both influenced and were affected by them, and why such phenomena occurred in the greater context of the 18th and early 19th century Caribbean at large. In terms of the types of processes, it examines various kinds of print culture, such as colonial newspapers, books, and almanacs, as well as correspondence records among different social groups. In terms of which groups are studied, these include printers, postal service workers, colonial and naval officials, and Catholic missionaries. The dissertation is divided into five chapters, the first of which provides insight into the operation of the mail service established in the aforementioned colonies, and the ways in which the Atlantic Revolutions impacted their service in terms of the different historical actors responsible for collecting and distributing correspondences. Chapter two looks at select British and French colonial printers, their print shops, and the book trade in the Caribbean isles during the 18th century. Chapter three delves into the colonial newspapers and compares the differences and similarities among government-sanctioned newspapers vis-à-vis independently produced papers. It uses the case of the Haitian Revolution to track how news of the slave insurrection was disseminated or constricted in the weeks immediately following the night of 22 August 1791. Chapter four examines the colonial almanac as a means of connecting colonial residents with people across the wider Atlantic World. It also surveys the development of these pocketbooks from mere astrological calendars to essential items that owners customized and frequently carried on their person, given the swathes of information they featured after the American War of Independence. The final chapter looks at the daily operations of Capuchin and Dominican missionaries in Martinique and Guadeloupe at the end of the 18th century and how they maintained their communications within the islands and with the heads of their Catholic orders in France, as well as in Rome. Overall, this project aims to fill in some of the gaps in the literature regarding how select British and French colonial residents received and dispatched information, and the effect this had in their respective Caribbean islands. It also sheds light on some of the ways that slaves were incorporated into the mechanisms by which information was collected and distributed, such as their encounters with printers, employment as couriers, and use as messengers to relay documents between colonial officials. In doing so, it hopes to encourage future discussion regarding how information moved in the British and French Caribbean amid periods of revolution and military conflict, how and why these processes changed, and the impact this had on print culture and mail systems in the post-revolutionary period of the 19th century.

At least since 19th century, studious of diverse areas they had searched to understand the questions that had involved the enslaved work in industrial environments. The central problem is in reflecting on the supposed incompatibility of the slavery front to the industrial work, constantly salient in the historiography that shows the slave as incapable of adapting to the activities that demanded dexterity technique and knowledge of machines, beyond not becoming accustomed itself to the rhythm of the industrial production. But not only this; for some historians the dichotomy between slavery and industry is something more serious, therefore the efforts to implant industries would be barred by the presence of the slavery institution. In this thesis, I considered to study the case of the Plant of Iron São João de Ipanema, in Sorocaba (SP), searching to rescue important points for the quarrel of the slavery relationships of work in an industrial enterprise. It is argued preliminarily, the visions on the industrial slavery of comparative form between Brazil and the United States with emphasis in century XIX. In turn, for one better agreement of what call industry in Brazil, follows a boarding on pre-industry and protoindustrialization, based in Europeans theoretical references and reflecting regarding these two concepts in the case of Brazil. Such step was the way necessary to understand the importance of the Ipanema Plant, whose trajectory was analyzed from pertaining primary sources to the establishment and governmental reports. The question appears then of the man power. Since the early years, the slaves had been a full presence onto the workers of the company. To rescue a little of the history of the slaves who had worked there, as well as of one another important group, the free Africans, lead-in the a important conclusions. He disciplines it of work was contested for the two groups of workers, by means of escapes, revolts or using itself of the available judicial ways that obtained. The violence of the slavery in the Plant was not minor who that one applied to the slaves in the sugar farms or coffee. The familiar arrangements were used by African slaves and whom they intended to constitute its families, being married inside of the proper plant. Finally, the history of the Ipanema Plant is argued that the incompatibility between slavery and industrial work needs to be rethinking in another point of view, therefore is full of situations that exemplify the opposite / Doutorado / Historia Economica / Doutor em Desenvolvimento Economico

The Birth of Tourism in the Highlands of Scotland : c. 1750-c. 1850Mazé, Mathieu 12 November 2014 (has links)
From 1750 to 1850, a new kind of industry began its development in the Highlands of Scotland. The region became one of the most favored holiday destinations for the British. The entering into the age of sensibility and romantism accounts for those changes. A new interest in nature and « wild » landscapes and a taste for history and folklore appeared. This movement was supported by literary and pictural productions that spread enhancing representations of the Highlands. Transport and accommodation infrastructures were still very inadequate at the start of the period but improved rapidly to meet the demands of the new travelling community, revealing the capacity of the local society to mobilise their ressourcesto seize those opportunities. The territory of the Highlands was tranformed by this industry. Some places became highly regarded thanks to their aesthetic qualities or their historical associations. New organisations were made to facilitate their access or even to adorn or protect them. Tourism brought material and symbolic compensations to a region afflicted witheconomic difficulties and it brought the aristocracy and the middle class to share the same interests, contributing to appease social tensions during a period in which they could be very keen.

Kdo byla vaše matka? Kdo jsou vaši strýcové a tety? Pojetí rodinného zázemí a vybraných demografických jevů v díle Jane Austenové v komparaci s rodinou Austenových a historickodemografickým výzkumem pro Anglii přelomu 18. a 19. století / Who was your mother? Who are your uncles and aunts? The concept of family background and selected demographic phenomena in the work of Jane Austen in comparison with the Austen family and historical-demographic research for England at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuriesŠimsová, Marie January 2021 (has links)
The presented master thesis deals with the work of Jane Austen. The author's novels are analysed from the perspective of the concept of the family, both from a literary and demographic point of view. These research questions constitutes two subject of the examination. The first subject is the family, as it is the cornerstone of Jane Austen's short stories. The objective of this work is to analyse the extent to which family relationships determine the possibilities of the main characters and heroines; how the heroines benefit from family ties or, on the contrary, want to escape from them. The conclusions show that Austen applied this determination in all studied novels. This work further examines the degree of cooperation and rivalry of the individual families in the novels. At this point, a significant diversity of interfamily relationships was found. Secondly, this work maps selected demographic idiosyncrasies in Jane Austen's family, in the families from her short stories, and in historical demographic studies of England at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. This thesis focuses on the number and composition of individual families, their origin, social status, property relations and to some extent legal relationships, mainly related to the issue of inheritance and the situation of widows in...

Except for short lapses of time, the Dresden Court Orchestra (today’s Saechsische Staatskapelle Dresden) has for centuries belonged to the elite regarding the European orchestral development. As a result its repertoire and the written tradition of this repertoire are relevant to music history, but so far not completely recorded, and thus inadequately considered in research and practice. The intent of this publication is to close respective gaps. The individual contributions, designated as “Three Studies,” are dedicated to the history of a selection of the orchestra’s early music material kept by the present Saxon State and University Library (SLUB) in Dresden. As the author conceived the articles in different time periods, they represent differing phases of perception. Studies I and II, which were published in 1999 and 2002 as accompanying texts to two CD-ROM catalogs released as special editions to RISM’s catalog series A/II “Music Manuscripts after 1600,” are no longer available on the market. Therefore a digital edition was desirable, especially as it offered the possibility of integrating corrections and supplements. Study I, dedicated to the Dresden Hasse Collection, is for example supplemented by a chapter on the original bindings of the music manuscripts. The study II treating the Dresden Opera Archive was mainly complemented by additional indexes. Scribal research is a central theme of both studies. Considerably augmented in Study III, this research leads to new conclusions. For the first time the history of the Dresden court office of music scribe (to be precise: the period from 1720 to 1850) has been outlined, thereby integrating pertinent research results of other authors. New perceptions of the Dresden court music history have been achieved relating to two of its most representative aggregations of music material: The Hasse Collection comprises works of all genres significant for the practice of music during Hasse’s thirty year term of office (from 1731/34 on) and afterwards; the Opera Archive joins in the area of Italian and later German opera and includes the specific music from 1765 to after 1900. Supplementing Studies I and II, the catalog entries for both collections – library siglum “D Dl” – as well as a small number of entries with siglum “D Ds” are available in the RISM A/II database. In regard to the identification of scribes, Study III with its illustrations is pertinent: they represent the current level of perception, whereas the state of knowledge in the two older studies was not corrected, illustrations excepted. The illustrations in their entirety, not least those relating to the Dresden court bindings, are of interest beyond their Dresden-specific aspects for many European libraries which have acquired music manuscripts since the 18th or 19th centuries but are no longer or only imperfectly aware of their origin. The source value of the music manuscripts whose Dresden provenance is revealed by the illustrations should increase in most cases beyond their former evaluation.
