Lorca Molina, Diego Andrés January 2014 (has links)

Characterization of the Nonconformist in the Novels of Sinclair Lewis

Cowser, Robert G. 08 1900 (has links)
A cursory glance into the background of Sinclair Lewis reveals that he was an ardent nonconformist. In this study, however, it is pertinent to view more closely the conditions that caused his rebellious attitudes, not only those concerning social reform but also those concerning his personal quest for individuality.

Desenvolvimentismo, populismo e distribuição de renda : o caso do segundo governo Vargas (1950 – 1954)

Jesus, Camila Vian de January 2018 (has links)
This research’s aim was to show that the Second Vargas Government’s developmentalism represented an attempt to build a developmentalism focused not only in industry, but also in the working-class quality of life and its entry within the economic system. The theoretical basis that will drive this piece of work will be centered in Celso Furtado, starting from its structuralistic root and its intellectual evolution over the developmentalism concept, defending that it would only be achieved if the eyes would turn beyond the industrialization and the discussion about developmentalism, focusing on the structuralistic source of Cepal because of the importance that this current of thought had in the economic politic decisions made in the studied period. To support the hypothesis, politics made towards health, education and social security will be analyzed, as well as social indicators for these areas. Furthermore, a bibliographic review was made about populism and working class centered politics, relating the theoretical concepts and the brazilian historic context, specially on the studied period, as the Second Vargas Government is often cited as a model of working class populist government. At the end of the research, after analysis of politics, institutions and Vargas speeches in its last government were made, the conclusion was that the fact that the government pursued industrialization and the country’s economic development is not an impeditive its social politic priorities.

Images of entanglement : Wittgensteinian spatial practices between architecture and philosophy / Wittgensteinian spatial practices between architecture and philosophy

Last, Nana D January 1999 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture and Planning, February 1999. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 217-218). / This thesis explores the deep spatio-linguistic relationship between the Austrian born philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein's practices of philosophy and of architecture. Wittgenstein's philosophy of language is notable for its sharply distinguished early and late work: with the early work most strongly associated with his Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus (1922) and the later frequently designated by his posthumously published Philosophical Investigations (1953). Following the completion of the early work Wittgenstein abandoned philosophy for a period of ten years, spending the years from 1926 to 1929 engaged in the design and construction of a house in Vienna for his sister Margarethe Stonborough. The thesis considers the ways in which the intervening practice of architecture infiltrated, altered, influenced and manifested itself in the later philosophy by focusing on the spatial. temporal. conceptual and cognitive gaps in the philosophy. The importance and the prevalence of the practice of architecture for Wittgenstein's later philosophy are exhibited in a variety of ways that together broaden, reconceive and resituate the functioning of language and philosophy. The thesis considers these developments in the philosophy as they are revealed in the visual and spatial language, thinking and construction of the philosophical texts. This analysis reveals a shift from the removed, idealized and flattened picture theory of the Tractatus to the production of the spatially complex and ambiguous images of entanglement in the Investigations. The Stonborough house, itself, is analyzed through its production of cognitive and spatial practices and problematics. Wittgenstein's practice of architecture is shown to utilize. develop, challenge and reveal related spatial concepts found in the philosophy. These include the ideas of limits, boundaries, inner/outer dichotomies, the relationship between showing and saying, the idea of correspondence and the practices of representation, assembly. resemblance, construction, building and rearrangement. / by Nana D. Relative Curricular Emphasis in Some Utah High Schools During the 1941-1951 Years

Payne, Edward W. 01 May 1953 (has links)
To have a sound and complete philosphy of education is a relative must for all people concerned with the teaching of children. Fortunate is the school whose administration and faculty have in common a functional definition of the term "curriculum" and its place in their total philosophy of education. The school program of only a few decades ago consisted of the strict disciplinary type of teaching, with only a few available subjects which were intended to develop the total capactities of the student. The new philosophy recognizes the variation in students as individuals. One must not assume that there is an "only" philosphy of education, nor is there a final definition of terms. But rather, these are progressive products of learning and experience. The purpose of this thesis is to study the curricular balance of certain Utah high schools during the year 1941 to 1951. These particular years cover one part of a year's peace and all of the war years. These years should provide chaning needs of society as well as the needs and desires of high school students. This study hopes to discover if the high schools or their students made a common response to the similar events of time and location. It is the purpose of this study to see how each school responded to time elements of the environment and also to compare all schools to see if common patterns of response are present.
