The Influence of Hindemith's Harmonic Theories on Das Marienleben, op. 27

Kubitza, Jana L. 08 1900 (has links)
This study attempts to show the relationship of Hindemith's harmonic theories and practice in the revision of Das Marienleben, op. 27. The study is based on Hindemith's The Craft of Musical Composition, commentaries on Hindemith's application of his theories, and analyses of Das Marienleben. Chapter One concerns Hindemith's contribution as a theorist, including a synopsis of his harmonic theories, and his application of the theories in his compositions. Chapter Two concerns Das Marienleben itself, including general information about the work and its revision, and an analytical comparison of its two versions. Chapter Three concludes that Hindemith made improvements in the new version in accordance with his harmonic theories through replacing ambiguous harmony with carefully controlled fluctuation and clearly defined tonalities.

The Influence of Imagism and Modern Painting on the Early Floral Poetry of William Carlos Williams

Trogdon, Lezlie Laws 12 1900 (has links)
The following three chapters identify influences of the Imagist movement and the avant garde painters on the early poetry of Williams, and particularly on those poems that deal with flowers. This study is restricted to the earlier poems for several reasons, the most obvious being that Williams simply does not employ floral imagery to any extent in The Collected Later Poems. For instance, of the almost three hundred poems in The Collected Earlier Poems nearly sixty take flowers as their title or rely on floral imagery for part of their power. Nearly half that many use arboreal imagery, another prominent and important "object" in Williams' poetry, and, of course, many more use other images from the natural world. On the other hand, in The Collected Later Poems only three poems have flowers in their titles. Even in these three Williams was more interested in depicting sociological situations than in description, for his conception of poetry changed radically after the 1930's. He became convinced at that time that poetry should be serious rather than entertaining. Further, he became a staunch advocate of the "anti-poetic" theory of beauty whose chief tenet was that beauty and ugliness were part of a single whole. Nothing beautiful, like a flower, could exist without its soil of ugly, drab antecedents. James Guimond believes that this is the reason why Williams ceased presenting "his beautiful objects in splendid, static isolation from time and the world around them" (1, p. 50). Possibly 14 for these reasons the nature imagery is not nearly so dominant in these poems as in those written before 1940. Nor has the poetry of Paterson or Pictures from Breugel been included in this study. Because of the tremendous attention given them in the last five years, their nature imagery has been well covered. However, of the nature, and especially floral, imagery of the earlier poetry little has been said. Hopefully, this study will show that Williams made extensive and successful use of flowers in his poetry because they were the particular objects of the concrete world which best lent themselves to the related techniques and goals of first the Imagistic movement in poetry and later the Stieglitz school in painting.

Choral Problems in the Unaccompanied Music of Francis Poulenc

Barnard, Jack Richard, 1932 01 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study, ve to analyze the stylistic characteristics in the unaccompanied music of one twentieth century composer, Francis Poulenc, in order to discover the choral problems which would confront choruses and conductors as they performed his music. It is hoped that this study will not only enable choral conductors to better understand, interpret, and appreciate the music of Poulenc, but also will serve as a guide toward the investigation of other twentieth century composers and their works.

Dějiny farnosti v Ústí nad Orlicí jako obraz římskokatolické církve v Československu v letech 1948-1961 / Parish history in Ústí nad Orlicí and the Roman Catholic Church in Czechoslovakia in years 1948-1961

Sklenář, Michal January 2014 (has links)
The thesis follows the history of the Roman Catholic Church in Czechoslovakia between 1948-1961. The first part includes broader theoretical context and the second part contains historical context of the issues which are discussed in the third part. On the example of Václav Boštík, the dean in Ústí nad Orlicí between the years 1934-1942 and 1945-1961, and using the micro-historical method, the thesis demonstrates the running of a parish in a district town during the first thirteen years of the communist totalitarian rule. The options and actions of dean Václav Boštík - an ecclesiastic administrator and statutory representative - in various situations and his decisions, which had a direct and significant influence on the parish, are analyzed in the thesis. At the same time, the presented local situation is compared with the steps of the state towards the Church on the national level, which shows one of possible pictures of the ecclesiastical history in Czechoslovakia in the second half of the 20th century. Key words 20th century, the Roman Catholic Church, Czechoslowakia, communism, Ústí nad Orlicí, Václav Boštík (1897-1963)

Developing interpretive turbulence models from a database with applications to wind farms and shipboard operations

Unknown Date (has links)
This thesis presents a complete method of modeling the autospectra of turbulence in closed form via an expansion series using the von Kármán model as a basis function. It is capable of modeling turbulence in all three directions of fluid flow: longitudinal, lateral, and vertical, separately, thus eliminating the assumption of homogeneous, isotropic flow. A thorough investigation into the expansion series is presented, with the strengths and weaknesses highlighted. Furthermore, numerical aspects and theoretical derivations are provided. This method is then tested against three highly complex flow fields: wake turbulence inside wind farms, helicopter downwash, and helicopter downwash coupled with turbulence shed from a ship superstructure. These applications demonstrate that this method is remarkably robust, that the developed autospectral models are virtually tailored to the design of white noise driven shaping filters, and that these models in closed form facilitate a greater understanding of complex flow fields in wind engineering. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.S.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2013.

Unintended alliances: Kennedy, Israel, and Arab nationalism

Unknown Date (has links)
This thesis will explore the origins of the U.S.-Israeli alliance during the Kennedy administration. John F. Kennedy provided Israel with the first U.S. weapons sale, issued the first informal security guarantee, and established the first joint security consultations between both nations. Ironically, Kennedy gave these concessions to contain Israel, not to establish closer relations. His primary objective for the Middle East was to improve U.S. relations with Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser, seeing Nasser as the path for gaining pro-American sentiments among the Arab population in the region to the detriment of the Soviets. Kennedy unintentionally laid the foundations of the U.S.-Israeli alliance while trying to restrain Israel, fearing Israeli actions would impede his plans. The Palestinian refugee issue, the regional arms race between Egypt and Israel, and Israel's secret nuclear weapons program became three pivotal concerns for Kennedy that unintentionally led to the U.S.-Israeli alliance. / by Michael Bocco. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2008. / Includes bibliography. / Electronic reproduction.

Olguín Valencia, Luis Manuel Augusto 09 April 2014 (has links)
Based on core concepts and analytical tools developed within the field of Discursive Psychology (especially, Potter & Wetherell, 1987; Edwards & Potter, 1992; and Edwards, 1997), the researcher offers a thorough analysis of political identity construction in the 2011 Peruvian presidential debate between Keiko Fujimori and Ollanta Humala. Discursive Psychology is a relatively recent strand within qualitative discourse research in Social Psychology. Its methodological approach puts language in a central lieu by analyzing talk in actual interactional and ecological settings in order to provide a detailed account of the rhetorical and action-oriented functions of properly respecified psychological elements. The persuasive interest and according rhetorical configuration of political discourse in electoral debates has been shown by different authors (Benoit, 1999; Benoit et al. 2002; Billig, 1987, 1991; Condor, Taliega & Billig, 2013). Particularly, Blas-Arroyo (1998, 1999, 2003, 2010, 2011) has shown the agonistic and confrontational preference in the rhetoric of face-to-face presidential debates. The main goal of this work consists in showing how memory and attribution serve particular rhetorical purposes and construct political identity within the Peruvian presidential debate held between Keiko and Ollanta. In order to do so, the researcher examines, first, the rhetorical use of descriptions, offered by Ollanta, from Alberto Fujimori’s government in order to establish a unique and factual memory to confront Kieko Fujimori as a candidate; second, the analysis focuses on Keiko’s ostensive attribution of inconsistency and contradiction against Humala by means of contrasting carefully selected episodes from his past and constituting her own identity through opposition to this agonistic construction; and, lastly, the researcher inspects the construction of identity that emerges from successive “subject positions” (Davies & Harré, 1990) that both candidates display for oneself and the other even when proposals are being offered. The analysis as a whole leads us to conclude, according to the literature, that political persona is an emergent product of interaction and depends on the particular rhetorical purposes set by the institution. / Tesis

Bombardelli, Maura January 2016 (has links)
This study addressed the trajectory of Fernando Ferrari in the period in which this political was part of Partido Trabalhista Brasileiro (PTB) [Brazilian Labor Party], from 1945 to 1960. Based on the theory of the political field developed by Pierre Bourdieu, we sought to clarify spaces where Ferrari performed, his relationship with other political agents, the process to accumulate capital, and the resources he used in the internal strife in his party, whose outcome was the party split and the creation of Movimento Trabalhista Renovador (MTR) [Renewing Labor Movement]. At the same time, we approached Fernando Ferrari’s contributions to the shaping of PTB. The sources for this study were mass-circulation newspapers of the time, Correio do Povo and Diário de Notícias, the proceedings of the Legisture of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, the journals of the Brazilian House of Representatives, and the politician’s personnel archive and also his memoirist materials – biographies and autobiographies.

The loss of language in Sylvia Plath’s narrative : woman's experience and trauma in the bell jar, "Tongues of stone," and "Mothers"

Petersen, Mariana Chaves January 2017 (has links)
Initially published in 1963 under the pseudonym Victoria Lucas, The Bell Jar has as its protagonist and narrator Esther Greenwood, who seriously criticizes the roles attributed to women in the United States in the 1950s. At the same time, she is going through a breakdown, which culminates in a suicide attempt. After the novel was republished, under Sylvia Plath’s name, in England in 1966 and in the United States in 1971, it was the subject of several feminist critical readings, its focus as a case study being more recent. In this thesis, I aim to establish a dialogue between these two approaches, relating gender, feminism, melancholia, and trauma, grounded in the writings of theorists such as Luce Irigaray, Cathy Caruth, Sigmund Freud, and Nicolas Abraham and Maria Torok. In spite of speaking from different loci, both Irigaray and Caruth give special attention to language. In the novel, Esther loses her ability to read and write, a fact that is connected not only to her critiques of a world that belongs to men but also to certain events that lead to this loss. With this in mind, I relate the narrative to two of Plath’s short stories: “Tongues of Stone” and “Mothers.” The first, from 1955, displays its main (nameless) character in a setting that is similar to The Bell Jar’s: in a psychiatric hospital, she presents difficulties to read and think. In the second story, written in 1962, the protagonist, also named Esther, is in a situation that may be compared to the narrative present of The Bell Jar; furthermore, once a parallel with the novel is established, the story’s character seems to present an even more profound loss of language than the novel’s protagonist.

It analyses, using cultural studies tools, the eroticism in Batuque by Bruno de Menezes, read to be studied the black identity.
