This dissertation is a translation with commentary of the prose and poetry of Robert Frost. Parting from the supposition that labor plays the primary role for the understanding of the poet's work, the introductory sections of the dissertation present a review of the life and work of the poet, along with a discussion of his visit to Brazil in 1954. The reader will also find a full discussion of the published translations of the poet's work into Portuguese. The second part of the dissertation consists of an anthology of the poet' s two principal essays and 32 poems selected from each of Frost's published volumes. Particular attentiQn has been paid to selecting poems, the thematics of which take up work in relation to human consciousness and perception / Mestrado / Mestre em Linguística Aplicada

An Analytical Study: Applying Hindemith's Tonal Theory to Niels Viggo Bentzon's Third Piano Sonata, Op. 44

Kim, Sun Hee 12 1900 (has links)
Niels Viggo Bentzon (1919-2000) is the most significant composer in the post-Nielsen period of Danish piano music. Bentzon's Third Piano Sonata, Op.44 was composed in 1946 and is considered by Mark L. Lehmann to be one of the great piano sonatas of the twentieth century. Not only does this sonata reflect Hindemith's ideas, but it also reveals Bentzon's unique style that successively empowers his innovative features. By applying Hindemith's theory, this study offers a way of understanding this piece and demonstrates the relevance of Hindemith's theory as a tool for analyzing the sonata. Chapter 1 presents the significance of the study, the state of research, the purpose of the study, and method. Chapter 2 provides a theoretical analysis of Bentzon's Third Piano Sonata, Op. 44. With a discussion of each movement, this analytical chapter traces Hindemith's influences: Bentzon organizes the four movements with a clear formal structure, a mediant relationship between the first movement and the rest of the movements, and a motivic coherence of each movement. Also, this chapter demonstrates how Bentzon follows Hindemith's way of chord construction and harmonic progression. This chapter provides insight into Bentzon's original style that facilitates an understanding of the tonal organization of each movement and illuminates Bentzon's intensity of expression through the use of quasi-improvisational passages, texture, dynamic fluctuations, and treatment of the full range of the piano. The last chapter concludes with a summary of Bentzon's compositional style based on observations from previous chapters.

Architektengemeinschaft Zimmermann: Partnerschaft Architekten BDA: Bauten 1963 - 2008

Zimmermann, Ulf, Zimmermann, Norbert January 2009 (has links)

The impact of the multinational corporations on leading issues and policy making in less developed countries : (a case study on Kenya)

Wambalaba, Wamukota Francis W. 01 January 1985 (has links)
The era of Multinational Corporations (MNCs) is so significant in the development of the Less Developed Countries (LDCs) as was the era of the Industrial Revolution in the development of the now More Developed countries (MDCs). It could be referred to as one of the major economic frontiers in the LDCs as is the computer frontier in the MDCs now. Naturally therefore, there are problems of distrust, fear of eventual crisis, uncertainty of the correct path and a pain in policy making. Coupled with the North/South delicate relationship, the MNC's (which mostly comes from the North) acceptability in LDCs (which are in the South) is of mixed feelings. In this paper therefore we shall explore some of the problems affecting the MNC/LDC relationship. Thus, among the questions to ponder on are what has been the impact, is it harmful or beneficial, do all MNCs have the same impact and how does each party interpret each impact? These ques~ tions often end up in accusations between MNCs and LDCs in general without devouring each other. But not without a loss of resources especially time and extra costs involved in speculations on each other as well as cushioning of uncertain events that one party suspects of the other.

To L.E.R.M. or Not to L.E.R.M.? Incubation in Problem Solving

Lerman, Daniel January 2024 (has links)
When faced with a challenging problem, we are often forced to choose between two cognitive strategies: stay focused on that problem until we arrive at an answer, or divert our attention elsewhere and return to the problem later. Malcolm Gladwell wrote Blink supporting the former strategy and intuition, while numerous famous creators such as Picasso, Poincare, and Cleese have all publicly noted the efficacy of skipping a problem and returning to it later. In the classroom, students often encounter test problems that they cannot answer immediately. They then face the integral decision about what to do next. In this situation, some will argue for a ‘gut-feeling’ approach, implying that students should input an answer then and there. Others claim it is best to leave the problem and return to it later. Which of these techniques will further increase the likelihood of arriving at a correct answer? There exists a substantial base of literature on incubation. When leaving a problem and returning to it later, incubation refers to the cognitive processes that occur in the meantime and assist in problem solving. This literature touches on mathematical, creative, and linguistic problem solving. Based on the literature, it seems evident that leaving explicitly and returning momentarily (or L.E.R.M.ing) assists problem solving across a wide domain of problem types, likely by harnessing the power of incubation. Thus, I will argue that substantial evidence indicates that it is advantageous for students who are unsure of an answer to leave problems explicitly and return to them momentarily (or, to L.E.R.M), rather than to force an answer based on gut feeling. In my pilot study, I apply these findings for the first time to reading comprehension problems. I then conduct a study on anagrams to test incubation effects on solve rates as well as on persistence in seeking alternative answers on anagram puzzles.

Changes and Context in the Role of Women in the 1960s Visual Arts Environment: A Case Study

Harper, Cheryl January 2012 (has links)
This thesis examines changes in gender attitudes between the years 1962 and 1967 as seen through the activities of a group of female volunteers at a regional community center, specifically the Fine Arts committee of the Arts Council at the Young Men's and Women's Hebrew Association in Philadelphia. I demonstrate how the women were conditioned both within and outside their community to accept a subservient role to husbands and male hierarchy. By considering two of the committee's major projects, one that took place in 1962 and the other in 1967, and examining the Jewish community's primary newspaper during the same period, I compare and contrast the attitudes of the female "volunteer" in general and this specific group of more rebellious housewives whose interests were focused in the visual arts. Between the two major projects, examples of sociological theory are examined in order to follow the paradigm shift towards emerging feminism. Over a period of five years these women reassessed their role as housewives, and many eventually participated in professional life outside the home. The specific accomplishments of the Fine Arts Committee are compared, from the first major exhibition in 1962, ART 1963/A New Vocabulary to the last significant project in 1967, the Museum of Merchandise. / Art History

Rosales Valencia, Blanca 22 August 2014 (has links)
Communication is a comprehensive process linking people. In the last decade, the Latin American governments have incorporated communication strategies which contribute to the achievement of political objectives related to governance and social inclusion issues. This document talks about the communication experience undertaken by the General Office of Social Communication of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, in the first two years of the Ollanta Humala administration, and the interaction mechanisms among the State, the media and the civil society based on the use of social inclusion concept in communications, considering the social dynamics and the information technologies. To that end, the document addresses the main problems presented in the State’s communication management, which will result in the proposal of a Communication Policy for Social Inclusion, as a first step to configure the strategic communication activities in the public management of democratic governments. The communication policy reveals a link between one concept of government management and one of communication management; a fact that enables the relevance of democratic values in the political exercise and contributes to civic development.
