Percursos urbanos : novos olhares na arte contemporânea

Angeli, Juliana Correa Hermes January 2007 (has links)
This dissertation presents the analysis of eight art works by different contemporary artists who utilize urban routes as a constitutive part of their poietics and poetics. By studying spatial and temporal changes since the industrial period, as well as how urban spatial displacements and their present acquired meanings are structured, we seek to comprehend for what motives a poietic of urban routes should persist today. We have noted how contemporary artists have re-signified urban spaces and the people who interact with them by means of their displacements or the appropriation of other people’s daily routes, and, by using routes, they have developed new gazes in relation to these questions of contemporary art.

Whereas much of its production is linked to the city as the scene of action and source of creation, seeks to recognize the conceptual issues that emerge from the relationship between the artist's works and this space, what triggers the analysis of art as a possibility to dream and as a proposal for discussion about the body in urbanity. Deepening the problem of image that emerges from the works, it establishes a dialogue with the production of other artists who developed workrelated matter. Arising from this proposition, the city is conceived as a space both real and perceived as a field of dreams, and this combination makes it possible to relate the urban space with Arcádia / Este estudo consiste numa reflexão sobre a obra da artista Elaine Tedesco, tendo como foco as projeções de imagens sobre espaços sombrios e as séries de objetos e instalações.

Teatro político e contestação no mundo globalizado: o Bread & Puppet Theater na sociedade de consumo / The political theater and protestation in the globalized world: the Bread & Puppet Theater in the consumer society

Mayumi Denise Senoi Ilari 26 February 2008 (has links)
Originated in the city of New York in the 1960s, the Bread & Puppet Theater established itself amidst the North American artistic vanguard of the 20th century. It was especially known for its demonstrations and protests against the Vietnam war. Four decades later, during the Iraq war, the group leaded by Peter Schumann, now established in Vermont, continues with their papier-maché theater, demonstrating and protesting against the evil and unfair empires of the globalized world. This study compares Gates of Hell (1998) - the final \"Domestic Resurrection Circus\"- an annual show presented to thousands of people, to Upside Down World - a new version of the circus called \"First World Insurrection Circus\" (2004) - analyzing the relationships between form and history. The analysis reveals that in our current civilization, which is largely based on the logic of commodities, in the commercialization of art, in the \"spectacularization\" of life (in debordian sense) and in the brutalized and fragmented post-modern wonderfulness, which presents and glorifies the same paradigms as innovations (or in its waning of affect, in Fredric Jameson\'s sense), Bread and Puppet\'s historical, epic and dialectic theater effectively resists, going the opposite direction of consumer society, in the insurrection against globalized world, the insurrection \"of the mind against the supremacy of money and the insurrection of the whole soul of puppetry against the stupidity of post-modern wonderfulness\".

This thesis argues for a renewed reading of Aldous Huxley's ¿Brave New World¿. The interpretation carried out therein not only aknowledges the novel's literary merit, but also recuperates its critical tenor, whose import has been ignored by those who refuse to accept some of its most relevant aspects. The thesis examines and reconsiders the most probable motives which led to this marginal position in critical discourse; following this, it highlights the importance of the novel, which allows one to develop revelant reflections on the contemporary world / Mestrado / Teoria e Critica Literaria / Mestre em Teoria e História Literária

Palavras e disparates em Borges e Ramón, sobre Historia universal de la infamia e Doña Juana la Loca, Superhistoria / Words and follies in Borges and Ramón, on A Universal History of infamy and Joanna the Mad, Superhistory

A maneira de um epilogo, retraca o projeto inicial deste estudo, baseado na conferencia-ensaio de Italo Calvino, "Exatidao" (Seis propostas para o próximo milênio) / Abstract: This doctoral thesis on Jorge Luis Borges' A Universal History of Infamy and Ramon Gomez de la Serna's Doña Juana la Loca, Superhistoria is divided into two parts. The first one entitled "Borges and Ramon in the literary Spanish and Argentine magazines, 1919-1949" discusses in its proper context the relationship between these two authors, especially through the periodical magazines where both collaborated from 1919 to 1949. The second part includes three chapters that compare the books A Universal History and Doña Juana. The first one, "The distances of the voice, an inexpert writer and a superwriter ", departs from the prologues of both books in order to approach the construction of the narrator's voice, observing their implications in the image of implicit authors. "Words and follies, on the infamous and super historical creatures" considers both implicit writers in their relation with fictional characters. The third chapter entitled "The epistemology of Universal History and the Superhistory, literary science" aims to deepen the sense of "Universal History" and "Superhistory" present in the titles of the books, from a synchronous cut that outlines critical and epistemological discussions that involved the field of History in the beginning of the 20th century. Finally, the epilogue of this work, "Emblems of the crystal in Borges and Ramon", returns to the initial goal of this thesis, based on Italo Calvino's conference called "Exactitude" (Six Memos for the Next Millennium) / Doutorado / Literatura Geral e Comparada / Doutora em Teoria e História Literária

Marais, Johannes Lodewyk January 2013 (has links)
Sedert 1963 is verskillende kategorieë reisliteratuur oor Kenia gepubliseer. / Thesis (DPhil)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / gm2013 / Historical and Heritage Studies / Unrestricted

“Our World-Work”: Gender and Labor in African Diasporic Literatures

Reid, Tiana January 2021 (has links)
In the 1928 romance novel, Dark Princess, W. E. B. Du Bois used the form of a love letter to ask "the first question of our world-work: What are you and I trying to do in this world?" Structured around this vexed notion of "world-work," "'Our World-Work': Gender and Labor in African Diasporic Literatures" takes seriously this communal question of what “you and I”—or we—are "trying to do." I extend Du Bois’s idea to locate the boundaries of the "we" in the face of variations in labor and gender. Thinking world and work together, I consider the grounds of collective narration and social organization on a broad scale, one structured by gender even as anti-sexism is evoked, such as in the case of Du Bois, who is often called a feminist by contemporary scholars. "'Our World-Work'" covers a range of twentieth-century writing, focusing on how figures and figurations of the "black woman," often at the site of the domestic, came to embody some of the urgent issues raised by the globalization of capital. Reading multi-genre works by Du Bois, Alice Childress, Ousmane Sembène, Paule Marshall, and others, "'Our World-Work'" explores how black writers and intellectuals were thinking, writing, and critiquing the world—and worlds—through their encounters with labor and gender during the middle of the last century. Attention to gender in this dissertation illuminates how modes of affiliation also contain exclusions. "'Our World-Work'" contributes to scholarship on accounts of worlding, intervening in critical debates around race, gender, and labor in the fields of black, feminist, postcolonial, and comparative literary studies.
