This dissertation is the product of an analytical study of the book of poems Batuque, of Bruno de Menezes with a focus on narratives of memory. Used as a reference, the cultural manifestations of African origin represented in the book in accordance with the theories guided under an optical connection-oriented between literary subjectivity and objectivity in history, supported on the concepts of social history proposed by Peter Burke, on the idea of culture of Terry Eagleton and cultural identity of Stuart Hall. These instruments allow observation of the African presence as an element of the composition of a cultural identity in the Amazon, in three aspects: the first, related to the lyricism, demonstrating especially in the s poems “Mãe Preta” and “Pai João”; the second directed to musicality, observed in poems like “Batuque” and “Alma e ritmo da raça” and the third concerns the religiosity, presented in poems like “Toiá Verequête” and “Oração da Cabra Preta”. These three aspects, what else arouse our attention was the religiosity, especially regarding the relationship between the sacred and the profane and the vision of good and evil, very evident in the work. The results obtained give us the idea that by reading the narrative memory of the author and its relation to the environment in which he lived, the environmental influences on the artistic creation of the poet and the production of a work focused on the cultural manifestations contribute significantly, for better understanding of the black people, present in the Brazilian culture.

Interpreting the mourning process through Hindemith's Trauermusik

Schumann, Scott Charles 05 August 2011 (has links)
Paul Hindemith traveled to London in 1936 intending to give the British premiere of his concerto for viola and chamber orchestra titled Der Schwanendreher on 22 January. The premiere--and much else--was put into question a few minutes before midnight on 20 January 1936, however, when King George V passed away. The next day, Hindemith worked from 11:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M. composing Trauermusik (Music of Mourning) for solo viola and string orchestra as a tribute to the recently deceased King of England. Thus, the circumstances surrounding the compositional origin of this piece invite a discussion of mourning in both a historical and musical context. In this paper, I will touch on issues such as how mourning defines us as humans and how emotions associated with mourning can be represented in music and experienced by the listener. I will illustrate how mourning helps us to understand the meaning of Trauermusik when it was written and first performed in 1936, following the death of King George V. To do this I will use Maurice Blanchot's ideas from his La Communauté inavouable, specifically his discussion of how death and mourning help to both define humans and bring them together into a community. Having established this critical framework, I will then provide a hermeneutic reading of Trauermusik, using analytical insights based on Hindemith's use of the 0167 pitch collection as my evidence. At the heart of my thesis is the belief that combining both historical insights and detailed analytical knowledge of Trauermusik will heighten the listener's experience of the piece to a greater extent than either perspective could on its own. / text

Philippon, Anne 10 1900 (has links) (PDF)

Regions in time : Gail Anderson-Dargatz’s The cure for death by lightning and Ann-Marie Macdonald’s Fall on your knees

Lewis, Tanya 05 1900 (has links)
This thesis examines the methods through which Gail Anderson-Dargatz and Ann-Marie MacDonald construct region in their novels The Cure for Death by Lightning and Fall on Your Knees. These texts, like all successful regional novels, describe more than geography. Their regions are also functions of time. I introduce the term "temporal region" to describe the spaces created by this interdependence of time and place. I then focus upon the specifics of descriptive and narrative approach that lead to the convincing portrayal of the Shuswap and Cape Breton Island in the texts. Anderson-Dargatz and MacDonald direct attention to the foddways of their regions, expressing the connection between consumption choices and a society's historical and physical location. The authors also articulate their regions by highlighting cultural diversity in the areas they describe. In this way they deny the social homogeneity more sentimental regional texts often rely upon. Finally, the novelists use an appropriately Canadian method of regional opposition to define their temporal regions according to that which they are not ~ they are not American, glamorous, or urban. They therefore must be Canadian, quotidian, and rural.

January 2000 (has links)
The last years of the twentieth century have been characterized by an increased presence of women in Hispanic poetry, who inevitably brought forth a new poetic language. Typical of this new expression are the Spaniard Ana Rossetti and the Peruvian Rocio Silva Santisteban, who give free rein to their emotions and desires in their poetic texts, which reflect love as both eroticism and joyful sexuality. In their poetry the body becomes the instrument for the fulfillment of desire and the production of erotic states. Thus, love is despised almost innocently but through the use of Kitsch as pop songs and advertising slogans, love is rehabilitated and the pleasure-death relation is seen in multiple perspectives.

Lewis

Badrines Passani, Francesc 02 October 2009 (has links)
C.S. Repercussió filosòfica i política. / OF THE DOCTORAL THESIS"Presence of Aristotelian Philosophy in the Works of C.S. Lewis"TEXT:C.S. Lewis is an author generally interpreted in the Platonic or Neo-Platonic trends, both through his narrative texts and through his essays. What this thesis defends is another presentation, which is focusing on his Aristotelian points of view. There are many elements to sustain this position, and in this thesis they are analyzed with continuous reference to the texts of Aristotle and his philosophy. In case the reader is not aware about C.S. Lewis' life, there is a small biography at the beginning of the work.Later on, the four main divisions have been developed as follows:1. The Aristotelian doctrine of the act in the texts of C.S. Lewis. This chapter is divided in three parts: the act as movement; the act as shape; and the act as an operation.2. The interpretation of the act as political action. Here the division is double: the good as a political act, and the perversion of science in scientism which leads to totalitarianism.3. The acceptance of Aristotelian teleologism in front of materialistic views of natural systems.4. The clash of C.S. Lewis, with the help of Aristotelian philosophy, against the contemporary relativism.Furthermore, we can't forget that Lewis had a profound Platonic basis, which is briefly analyzed in four points:1. The elements which are strictly narrative.2. The spiritual dimension or fourth dimension.3. Memory and reminiscence.4. The cardinal virtues of Platonic origin. Finally, the conclusions are divided in three points:1. Theological repercussion of Lewis.2. Literary repercussion.3. Philosophical and political repercussion.

The loss of language in Sylvia Plath’s narrative : woman's experience and trauma in the bell jar, "Tongues of stone," and "Mothers"

Petersen, Mariana Chaves January 2017 (has links)
Initially published in 1963 under the pseudonym Victoria Lucas, The Bell Jar has as its protagonist and narrator Esther Greenwood, who seriously criticizes the roles attributed to women in the United States in the 1950s. At the same time, she is going through a breakdown, which culminates in a suicide attempt. After the novel was republished, under Sylvia Plath’s name, in England in 1966 and in the United States in 1971, it was the subject of several feminist critical readings, its focus as a case study being more recent. In this thesis, I aim to establish a dialogue between these two approaches, relating gender, feminism, melancholia, and trauma, grounded in the writings of theorists such as Luce Irigaray, Cathy Caruth, Sigmund Freud, and Nicolas Abraham and Maria Torok. In spite of speaking from different loci, both Irigaray and Caruth give special attention to language. In the novel, Esther loses her ability to read and write, a fact that is connected not only to her critiques of a world that belongs to men but also to certain events that lead to this loss. With this in mind, I relate the narrative to two of Plath’s short stories: “Tongues of Stone” and “Mothers.” The first, from 1955, displays its main (nameless) character in a setting that is similar to The Bell Jar’s: in a psychiatric hospital, she presents difficulties to read and think. In the second story, written in 1962, the protagonist, also named Esther, is in a situation that may be compared to the narrative present of The Bell Jar; furthermore, once a parallel with the novel is established, the story’s character seems to present an even more profound loss of language than the novel’s protagonist.
