Tremblay, Jane January 1992 (has links)

The heat and the light of Marshall McLuhan : a 1990s reappraisal

Jeffrey, Liss, 1955- January 1997 (has links)
Canadian intellectual Marshall McLuhan (1911--1980) left a controversial legacy. This dissertation addresses the four chief paradoxes that his work poses for contemporary commentators: the core meaning of his texts; the tradition in which his contribution now seems most intelligible; the divergent response to his work; and the enduring yet fragmentary impact of his contribution to popular and academic life. Taking a rhetoric of inquiry approach, modified by Gerald Holton's writing in the history of science, this reappraisal argues for McLuhan's significance as a theorist of communications as techno-cultural transformation or "mediamorphosis"; for his seminal role within the Toronto School of Communications; and for his inspiring relevance within the interdiscipline of communications, despite the forging of a negative academic consensus against his work in the early 1970s. McLuhan united the ancient arts of grammar and rhetoric into a techno-cultural hermeneutics that constitutes an unexhausted approach to the study of the impacts of media and technologies on sensibilities, literacies and culture.

'Tapping into the chaos' : crisis, state and accumulation in Zimbabwe.

Mawowa, Showers. January 2007 (has links)
The conjunctural dynamics of the Zimbabwe crisis after 2000 have produced a distinctive pattern of accumulation .Four features are noticeable in this pattern - firstly ; disorder and/or violence has become common , both as a general feature and driver of wealth accumulation and the political project accompanying it . Secondly ; the State has increasingly become more central and pervasive in driving accumulation and in the distribution of both economic and political goods . Thirdly , the crisis has awakened , reinforced and reshaped a distinctive acquisitive culture peculiar to the period in question , albeit resonating with the historical formation of Zimbabwe's ruling elite . Lastly , the current crisis has modified and reinforced a culture of 'strategic contradictions ' within ZANU-PF . This dissertation is an analysis of Zimbabwe's 'political economy of crisis ' in the post 2000 period . It examines how the Zimbabwean ruling elite and those connected to the state have benefited from the unregulated forms of accumulation attending the Zimbabwean crisis . A broad combination of a contextual analysis of the crisis and its beneficiaries and a close case-study analysis of an 'informal ' (illegal ) gold-mining site in Totororo , rural Kwekwe's 'Empress ' are a in Central Zimbabwe are employed to try to distil accumulation patterns that have resulted from the present economic and political crisis . / Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, 2007.

Moraes, Zeny Oliveira de January 1989 (has links)
This study is based on Jean Piaget's theory of cognitive development . It consists of an exploratory - descriptive longitudinal study of the spontaneous rhythmical and melodical manifestations during the firs t two year s of life. The subject of this case study is a boy, born o f natural birth. Piaget's conception of intellec t ual development was chosen because its biological and logic o-mathematic a basis provides a better understanding of music development, taking the nature of music into consideration. The objective of this study is to verify if the spontaneous manifestation of musical intelligence of the research subject, investigated through hearing, vision, sound emission and touch evol v·es simul taneously wi th the improvement of intelligence "itself" as it occur with language. The method utilized in the study was observation by means of filming the subject during 24 months. The episodes of the firs t five months were filmed in the natural environment. The remaining 19 episodes were recorded in the Produc tion Center of the School of Education of UFRGS The analysis of the subject's behavior was done according to the six stages of development of "Sensorimotor Intelligence" according to Piaget. The first s tage studies the "Exercise of Ref le xes". In the second stage we studied the habits relative to the basic changes of "Sucking, Vision, Speech, Hearing, Grasping and Intentional Sensorimotor Adaptations". In the third stage we analysed the "Secondary Circular Reaction " . In the fourth stage (a) we investigated the "Coordenation of Secondary Schernata and their Application to New Stituations. In the fourth stage (b) we observed "Assirnilation, Accornodation, and the Characteristic Organization of Mobile Schernata" . In the fifth phase we studied the " Terciary Circular Reaction and the Discovery of New Mean Through Active Experirnentat ion " . In the s i xth stage , we f ocused the "Invention of New Means Through Mental Cornbination " . In all these phases we tried to observe the parallelisrn between rna nifestations of intelligence " per se" and of musica l intelligence, which was docurnented i n the filrns . We concluded that there is such parallelisrn .

______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This work does an intersection between Freud s psychoanalysis (1856-1939) and the literature by the carioca Nelson Rodrigues (1915-1980). The main purpose is to carry on the analyses of Rodriguean work to demonstrate the presence of superego on the lowness and the neurosis trying to understand the idiosyncrasies of ailment in Brazil culture. The superego functions (auto-observation, moral consciousness and idea formation) change according to historical and socio-cultural contexts. This shows the need to establish the Freudian concept at the Brazilian reality. The country historical construction built its own ways to express the conflict between the desire and the censure. The Rodriguean fiction is rich to solve the moral problem of the superego. The carioca writer did a large moral scheme of Brazilian society using characters, situations or motives which states the conflict between the desire and censure as an always present structure in the existence. He considered himself as the creator of an unpleasant work due to the themes and polemic taboos he wrote. Nelson criticized the drive frustration at modern times resulting the apathy and auto-coercion which are typical of the obsessive neurosis. Freud postulates that the literary creation may act on the superego in a way to provide a sublimed destiny to the drive, differentiated from the symptom. The forces which impel the artists to create are the same forces which in other people change into neurosis and give incentive to the society to build its institutions. The artist s main objective is to free himself by his work communication with others who suffer from the same conflicts and provide them some freedom, too. By his literary creation, Nelson Rodrigues got an alternative for the psycho illness which desired to infect him, because the tragedies of his life, the flesh and soul suffering could have started some psychopathologies. His talent represents a symbolization to dig at the human mud repressed by moralizing forces. It may be concluded that the fine Rodriguean irony was audacious in doing poetically what represents the ululant obviousness of lowness in Brazil as well as its possible redemption. Themes that together with lowness, cynicism, remission and regret are present at the clinic daily and they were evident at the writer s work. He redoes the universal filling it with what we can call brasility . Thus, he demonstrates that such themes constitute specificities of our ailment in the culture. Nelson teaches a lot about the clinical field, therefore he points out creative possibilities to the human animal, who, many times, has to sink into its own horror to get out of there a little less blind.

Gregory Bateson e a educação : possíveis entrelaçamentos

Pistóia, Lenise Henz Caçula January 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to present the reflections of a theoretical research that analyzed the connections between education as a knowledge discipline and Gregory Bateson's epistemology, developed in his work Ecology of the Mind. The investigation process sought the reevaluation of the pedagogic scope in actions that proposed the reconnection of knowledge, emphasizing its analysis as the ample understanding of learning, the human communication, the study of the mind, the contributions of the neuron-science, and the cognitive science. The systematic thinking focused on the perspective of the imbricate dimensions in the triad "context-process-relationship", involving live beings and environment, in which take part the recursive movements that point towards congruent transformations. The contributions of biology of knowledge and the autopoetic theory, for which Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela conceived, focused on elements of a theoretical perspective that highlights the understanding of life as a relation of live systems in a process of cognition, in which life basic phenomena are conceived in a recursive movement including the observer, the researcher, and the subjects of the educational practice: apprentice and apprenticer. The conclusion of this thesis intended to invite the dialog with the authors and with a theoretical perspective which broke the limits of the cartesian modern thinking, while announcing the epistemology of the sacred and the connections with the education as a continuous learning process.
