Germinal Ideas and Processes within plies (2002): A Chamber Work for Eleven PlayersStecher, David 12 1900 (has links)
The piece is a twenty minute work discoursing the integration and eventual dissolution of two separate musical strands. The pitch material of each strand is determined from synthetic scales whose intervalic content duplicates at the following intervals: Perfect 12th, Diminished 12th, Minor 9th, Perfect 8ve, and Major 7th. A proportional means of temporal compression is generated through the use of the factor, 11/15 (e.g. Event 2 is 11/15 the duration of Event 1). Various elements of jazz music informed the construction of plies, including the instrumentation of the ensemble and the means by which the performers interact throughout the piece. Internal cueing and performer decisions are meant to eliminate the need of a conductor in favor of increased interpretive freedom by the performers.

Konvergence sektoru finančních institucí v zemích Evropské unieSlavíček, Michal January 2020 (has links)
Slavíček, M. Convergence of the sector financial corporations in the European Union countries. Diploma thesis. Brno: Mendel University, 2020. The diploma thesis deals with the possible convergence between the years 2004–2018 within the sector account of a financial corporations (defined by the ESA 2010 methodology) across the countries of the European Union, with an emphasis on Central European countries. The stated goal of the work was fulfilled by selecting suitable indicators that were used for the creation of cluster analysis and for calculating the standard deviations in the indicators. More specifically, these are indicators dealing with financial transactions (F.1–F.8), credit market concentration, number of credit institutions, number of employees in credit institutions and premiums written. However, the empirical results of the work did not prove or refute financial convergence across EU countries, as the clusters have changed over the years and even the development in standard deviations did not indicate demonstrable convergence.

Why We Draw: An Exploration Into How and Why Drawing WorksMills, Jonathan Edward 28 June 2010 (has links)
Visual information allows us to experience concepts in a way that is analogous to the real world; an image represents the semantic meaning of a concept and does so without conforming to the structural or syntactic rules of standard language. Drawing is therefore an agile form of communication, able to maneuver around barriers that impede the exchange of ideas between one profession and another where the difference in cultural dialects gives rise to translation complications. This thesis argues that the value of visual information lies not in the final, finished images, but during the creation of those images, during the action of drawing. If drawings are generally considered a form of communication, then drawing is a form of visual conversation; much like spoken language, its message unfolds as it is performed, and we make meaning from that performance.
Following an exploration of the visual and cognitive systems integral to interpreting visual information, a discussion of language structure and sources of language conflict sets the stage for employing the act of drawing as a collaborative tool in cross-disciplinary settings. Proposed is a set of principles guiding this use of drawing which builds upon the research findings herein. These principles are structured to be usable by all professions, regardless of artistic background or traditional practice, and to encourage a reevaluation of drawingâ s role in the problem-solution process. / Master of Science

A New Middle Landscape: An Urban NeighborhoodZimmerman, Jessica Louise 28 July 2010 (has links)
This thesis is an exploration of a new housing type: a middle ground between a single-family detached house of the suburbs and a high-density apartment building of the city. A block in the Shockoe Bottom district of Richmond, Virginia is the site for this medium-density living environment. The building is a multi-use complex consisting of forty-six homes, a large central courtyard, and thirteen commercial spaces on its ground floor. The building's massing evolved from a series of studies that took into account interior volumes of space, generous balcony square footage, as well as light and ventilation considerations. These massing studies, along with a strict organization of parts and uses, resulted in a multifaceted orthogonal form. / Master of Architecture

Roanoke Passenger Train Station: Framing IconsMitchell, Anne Walker 12 August 2010 (has links)
This thesis explores the framing of graphical qualities of the passenger train and the city of Roanoke, Virginia. A passenger train station frames these icons and brings people directly to the train. This framing creates a new icon for the city. An area on the train tracks is revitalized and creates a permeable threshold into and out of the city. / Master of Architecture

Folding: A HouseHuntington, Kacey Joy 09 August 2010 (has links)
Folding: A House is a study of the continuity of floor, wall and ceiling within the context of a house. With this method of continuity through folding, a strong directionality occurs within the spaces. The relationship among the different folds and between the folds and their enclosures is a syntactical relationship. Each fold slips in and past the previous fold. The forty-five degree rotation of the house on the forty-five degree sloped hill site allows for four fundamentally different relationships of house to ground and the surrounding views. The closed and open spaces inherently created within the folds directly relate to these differentiated views. / Master of Architecture

turning_spaceNolan, Michael S. 14 June 2010 (has links)
This thesis is an eutopian project: it examines what is with a sense of what should be to see what must be done. The project is a rerouting of Interstate 581 in Roanoke, Virginia through a reinforced concrete tunnel from the Orange Avenue exit to the Elm Avenue exit with towers placed at intervals along the tunnel to provide light. A reinforced concrete pedestrian bridge links the towers and provides a path from downtown Roanoke to the Civic Center. / Master of Architecture

Embracing Monumentality: a Montpelier Center for the ArtsGallup, Christopher Lackey 23 June 2010 (has links)
Monumentality shares a connection with history in its relationship with time, but it is not limited by this association. The selection of noble materials, such as granite, can date a building through the august character of the stone and its referential qualities. However, in the making of a monumental structure, the poetics of the form can transcend these limitations, resulting in architecture that stands with dignity upon the land. Thoughtful, conservative design that combines judiciously-specified materials with intrepid forms can result in worthy additions to even the most historic urban environment, if they are expressive of the mission and the manner of their making.
As a thesis study, a theater complex for the city of Montpelier provides a suitable model for testing the viability of this conservative approach. The capital of Vermont has a vibrant artistic community that has long lacked an adequate venue for the many performances and festivals it invites. Nestled in the valley bisected by the Winooski River, its mountainous confines and remoteness to other urban centers has limited new development for decades, and helped preserve the historic character of the downtown.
Introducing a grand theater to a city steeped in architectural integrity and civic pride is fraught with challenges. The established palette of building forms and materials, when combined with the force of a public predisposed to preservation, exert pressure upon the Architect that can make inspired design difficult. It is incumbent on the Architect to be aware of these influences, but be above them. Only then can the architecture achieve monumentality, and, in the case of the Montpelier Center for the Arts, return decorum to the theater-going experience. / Master of Architecture
