Identity and ministry in healthcare chaplaincy : the liminality of the Church of England priest who continues to sing the Lord's song in the strange land of the National Health Service

Kyriakides-Yeldham, Anthony Paul Richard January 2017 (has links)
This thesis examines the dual identity of the Church of England priest employed as an NHS healthcare chaplain. In 1948, full-time NHS chaplains provided a Church of England ministry of liturgy and pastoral care. Their twenty-first century counterpart delivers existential spiritual or pastoral care. Though Church of England chaplains are licensed by the Church, their work is shaped by the NHS and the Trust which employs them. They are accountable to the Church and the NHS even though each promotes different values and serves different ends. Published literature alludes to the chaplain’s sense of marginalization from the Church and within the NHS. Interviews with twelve full-time NHS chaplains, who are Church of England priests, focused on how they interpreted their dual identity as priest and chaplain, and the impact the two institutions had on these identities. This I framed using the theoretical model, ‘communities of practice’. Analysis of these interviews confirmed that chaplains thought they were disconnected from the priorities and values of the Church. This they described as ‘marginalization’, a term which appears elsewhere in published literature sometimes interchangeable with ‘liminality’. I claim that liminality is not only conceptually different but makes a distinct contribution to understanding the work and identity of chaplain and priest. I argue the existence of liminal intelligence and its importance in the ministry of the chaplain. I maintain that ministerial priesthood needs to be faithful to its liminal credentials. These I trace back to the liminality of the cultic priesthood outlined in the Hebrew bible as well as the liminality of Jesus, his teaching and the communitas of the early Church. I propose that the role of the ministerial priest is not only about recalling the institutional Church to its liminal roots but that liminality is the essence of priesthood.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Raphael Leal Mendonca.pdf: 10106411 bytes, checksum: 1b61d6ad0eeb168109bf2774dd8b54fc (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-08-14 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Digital games have been highlighted in recent years because of its high growth in the international market. On this basis, some elements forming the digital games can be separated for study, and thus contribute to the development of the entertainment area. One of this elements is the concept of immersion. When this is analyzed, it is realized that there is a range of different variables that may influence the relationship with the link between the game and the player. From this, this dissertation aimed to the development of an expert system that is capable of, based on data obtained from responses to a set of statements online, provide a preview of the degree of immersion of a digital game. To do this, it was done a characterization the relevant variables and using techniques of artificial intelligence, such as expert systems. In this scope, it was also considered how these variables influence the player s emotion about the game. From this results in the degree of immersion, it was analyzed with the aid of other Artificial Intelligence techniques, such as expert systems, fuzzy logic and Self-Organizing Maps, to maximize the effectiveness of the process. The study s definition of these parameters involves the exploitation of basic theoretical concepts of digital games and the variables already found in the previous research (narrative, audio, video, social relations, artificial intelligence and gameplay). With this, it was found as the immersion and the elements of the game can influence the emotions of the player. To conduct the survey, a questionnaire was designed for online data capture, which was filled by a group of 96 players, resulting in 133 completed questionnaires, with 672 sets of defined variables and 3406 completed statements. These data were then transferred to the applications of Fuzzy Logic and Self-Organizing Maps, which analyzed the relationship between emotion and immersion. From the data collected, analyzes of the influence of the elements of digital games Action/Adventure style were made, setting how immersion and emotion behave between digital games of the same series and style, of the same platform and the same game released on different platforms. The potential for a type of emotion to show up was set for each game and emotion groups were found for the Action/Adventure games, with the highlights of groups where emotions like Love, Hate, Pride and Shame are more likely to affect the players. With this results of the research, it is expected to enable new researches and the establishment of a possible referral to the definition of guidelines to cooperate with the activities of professional game developers, as well as establish new intersections between the area of digital games and psychology.

Communication channel simulation tool based on geometrical and statistical model of macro cell environments.

Castilho, Sergio Duque 29 September 2006 (has links)
This work present a simulation tool for macro cell environment based on geometrical and statistical representation of the scatterers and on the COST 259 Directional Channel Model (DCM). A comprehensive review of the propagation prediction models for terrestrial wireless communication systems and geometric channel models, that provide, times of arrival (TOA) and the angle of arrival (AOA) for diferents statistics scatterers distribution is realized. This tool uses gaussianly distributed scatterers for each cluster. This distribution is naturally more realistic than the uniform distribution leading closer to experimental results. This geometrically based model simulates the TOA dispersion present in wide band channel models and the AOA dispersion necessary for systems that explore spatial diversity. This tool also incorporates the concept of line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight and its birth and death as the mobile station moves in a cell, as well as the appearance and disappearance of additional clusters of scatterers. The output provided by this simulation tool is comprised of all the complex amplitudes, delays and angles of arrival of all multipath components associated with each cluster of scatterers. Mean attenuation and slow fading effects are also incorporated to the model and fast fading appears as a consequence of the multipath interference.

It also tries to understand the constructive and creative process of this important architect; and as ultimate aim, seeks to collaborate in knowledge of the methodology of its architectural design. It presents the values that guided the architect s works over the years, from its formation to the present day, through a critical analysis of the work and its connections to world s contemporary architecture, showing the steps that were needed to build an architecture technological, industrial and human in Brazil, and in the search line expressing the possible influences of notable predecessors in forming its architectural repertoire, with examples and drawings to identify these cultural expressions and projective. Among the many names of the repertoire of Lelé, predominate Richard Neutra and Jean Prouvé. Neutra, Austrian architect, stands out in Puerto Rico and Latin America with numerous examples of buildings that are constructive and environmental concerns. Prouvé, French builder, is recognized by the formal language toward the possibilities of industrialization. Both architects were in Brazil in 1959, for an international conference of architects in Brasilia. Neutral published in Brazil the book Architecture of Social Concern in hot climate countries where his experience in Puerto Rico, designing and constructing buildings as social urban and rural schools, health center and hospitals. Richard Neutra s influence in the field of environmental João Filgueiras Lima, while Prouvé s reference light on issues of industrialization, inspiring plates folding and assembly manuals. Faced with a significant built work, also numerically, four projects are especially analyzed here, with the selection criterion its unique character and symbolic: the transient Abadiânia school (1982-1984), the seat of the Municipality of Salvador (1986), the Sarah hospital in Salvador (1988-1994), and the house Roberto Pinho (2007-2008), in Brasília. Synthesis of Thiophene-Vinyl-Benzothiazole Based Ligand Analogues for Detection of Aβ and Tau Pathology in Alzheimer's Disease

Johansson, Joel January 2024 (has links)
As of today, Alzheimer’s disease is the leading cause of dementia among neurodegenerative disorders, affecting many millions of people worldwide. As the average life span of populations increase, more and more people succumb to the illness each year. Like other neurodegenerative disorders, Alzheimer’s disease can be attributed to the accumulation of protein aggregates in the brain. These amyloid-β peptides and tau proteins can presumably be detected in the brain many years before the onset of clinical symptoms. Development of fluorescent ligands, capable of binding to these neuropathological hallmarks and highlighting them, could serve as molecular diagnostic tools and facilitate an early diagnosis of the disease. The method could also be useful in studying disease progression and evaluating the effects of novel treatments. One such ligand is HS-259. The aim of this project was to synthetize different analogues of HS-259, and test their selectivity towards the aforementioned aggregates in brain tissue from an individual with Alzheimer’s disease. Staining of tissue samples with analogue solution enables visualization of aggregate sites through fluorescence imaging. In the end, five analogues were synthetized, albeit in relatively low overall yields. Synthetic methods included Suzuki-Miyara cross-couplings, Ullmann-type arylations and condensations. Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) were used for analysis of the compounds. Two of the five analogues could be tested for staining of aggregates and assessed for photophysical characteristics, i.e. absorption- and emission spectra. One analogue stained both amyloid-β aggregates and some tau aggregates, whereas the other stained neither. Since only two analogues were tested and rendered inconsistent results, further studies are needed to assess the binding properties of HS-259 analogues in general.
