Delivery performance : How to define & measure delivery performance in a triadic relationship

Hedin, Johan, Jonsson, Martin, Ljunggren, Johan January 2006 (has links)
<p>Problem discussion:</p><p>When different companies join into triadic relationships it is important that the relationships are managed properly. Findings have indicated that components for a successful relationship are high level of trust and commitment, risk/reward sharing, joint planning. To improve a triadic relationship, the actors have to measure the overall performance. In the triadic relationship that we have investigated there is obvious problems with information sharing and measure the same variables regarding delivery performance.</p><p>Research Question:</p><p>How can delivery performance be measured in order to adapt it to a triadic relationship?</p><p>Objective:</p><p>Our objective is to describe delivery performance as well as explain and adapt it to a triadic relationship.</p><p>Conclusions:</p><p>Delivery performance</p><p>Almost every customer in our questionnaire thinks it is important to measure delivery performance. We claim it is of great importance for a triad to create a common method to measure delivery performance, where every actor knows when, where and how to measure. The criterion for effective KPIs are to measure the overall supply chain performance rather than the performance of an individual chain member. That is why we claim the best way of getting better information about how the 3PL provider perform should be integrated in the measurement of the overall delivery performance of the triad. The most efficient way to measure the 3PL providers’ performance is the 3PL provider uses a scanning system and reports the measurements to SCA. The actors within the triad must also measure the delivery performance in financial and non financial terms. It is important for the triad to have the same perceptions regarding split deliveries, delivery window, dependability and flexibility. If the actors use the same method to measure delivery performance, the measurements will be reliable and useful for all actors within the triad.</p><p>Triadic Relationship</p><p>We claim that information sharing is very important. The studied triadic relationships show that if a supplier should measure what is important they have to know what is important for their customers. Another important aspect for the supplier is to have information about how the customers perceive the delivery performance.</p><p>To be able to have a good service quality all service gaps should be analysed and closed. To be able to close the service gaps regarding delivery performance in a triadic relationship, information sharing is the key. There have to be collaboration between the different actors of the triad. Important tools to use if this should be possible are connected computer systems and shared information between all actors.</p>

How effective are 3PL & 4PL partnerships in the South African logistics supply chain / David Robert McGarrie

McGarrie, David Robert January 2003 (has links)
Outsourcing of logistical operations is becoming more and more frequent in order to address the needs of a company's supply chain as well as improving customer service and reducing operating costs. The main objective of this study was to provide a guideline to Logistics and Supply Chain Managers on how to successfully implement an outsourcing (3PL/4PL) partnership, as well as identify the pitfalls that should be avoided during the implementation process. To realise this objective an extensive review of the current literature was undertaken on the concept of logistics and the supply chain and how the concept of outsourcing has influenced this concept. The literature presented the following results: ~ Logistics is often perceived as non-core business function to a company and hence suitable as an outsourcing option. ~ Outsourcing of the logistics function should be a strategic decision that offers both a reduction in costs as well as improvements in sales revenue and customer service. ~ Outsourcing is able to contribute value for a company through reduced cost and increased revenue as well as improved service levels due to the specialist nature of the outsourcing partner. ~ Some competitive advantage is possible when choosing a 3PLl4PL to operate your logistics function. ~ The 3PL industry is currently in a state of transition, with many smaller 3PL's consolidating their business efforts to form Lead Logistics Provider companies. An empirical research on the South African perception of the 3PLl4PL industry was then conducted using a structured questionnaire. The results of the questionnaire providing an answer on the state of the 3PLl4PL industry in South Africa along with comments on how successful implementation differed from the failures. From the literature review and the empirical research it was possible to establish recommendation on how to establish a successful outsourcing partnership with a 3PLl4PL, as well as a tool was developed to aid those companies that currently experience problems with their outsourcing partnership. While the outsourcing process is unique to every situation the guidelines offer a generic approach that prevents the prospective outsourcing company from falling into common pitfalls that often lead to failure of the partnership. / Outsourcing of logistical operations is becoming more and more frequent in order to address the needs of a company's supply chain as well as improving customer service and reducing operating costs. Last Mile Delivery Dilemma in E-Commerce

Lal Das, Jinto, Fianu, Victor Dogbeda January 2018 (has links)
E-commerce has been growing in Sweden over the years. It has not only contributed to economy, but also has shaped people’s way of living, especially with the service of home delivery. Consumers enjoy the various choices of products with reasonable prices and the convenience of receiving parcels with a single click on the mouse or by using their phones. Meanwhile, the problem of not-at-home and repeated delivery have caused trouble for both consumers and logistic service providers leading to an increase in delivery cost. Therefore, it takes a lot of cooperation and innovations to come up with solution which will both convenient to customer and 3PL providers, which we call ‘last mile delivery’.This thesis was written with purpose of evaluating the solutions used to address the not at home problem of last mile in e-Commerce. Moreover, the thesis seeks find out which of these solutions are preferred by customers and the impact of these solution on customers. The thesis focuses on the Swedish customers because they have more experience buying online. In this thesis we first established a literature review of E-commerce, E- Shoppers preference of last mile delivery, last mile delivery concept, last mile logistics solution (not at home) which we came up with a theoretical framework by examining the impact of last mile delivery. In order to answer the research questions a focus group discussion and nine interviews were carried out focusing mainly on professional and non professional customers in Sweden. The study identified that apart from home delivery, the customers in Sweden mainly use Collection Points in online shopping. Some other delivery methods such as automated locker banks and controlled home access exist but still in early stage. After analyzing the literature review, current solutions and empirical findings, the study concluded with three potential solutions to solve not at home problem. These solutions are - Secured room at residential building to drop parcel, Automated Locker Bank and Collection Points more closer to residential area.

Rendre opérationnel le développement durable : de la stratégie à la concrétisation des projets chez un prestataire de services logistiques / Putting sustainable development into practice : from strategy to project implementation for Third Party Logistics Provider

Chaari, Habib 13 October 2014 (has links)
Even though sustainable development continues to grow, it is difficult to implement in a company’s everyday operations. Particularly, the sector of transportation and logistics is struggling to reduce its environmental and social impacts. This research aims to compare the theoretical foundations of sustainable development to the practices of a Third Party Logistics Provider "3PL". It helps to understand the process of the emergence of a sustainable development policy in a business: Corporate Social Responsibility "CSR" and to participate in the development of projects that highlight the tensions between environmental or social impacts and the economic imperative. The result is a new approach to put into practice sustainable development through improvement and optimization projects related to the business at different levels (strategic, tactical and operational) and in several areas (transportation, handling and storage). Mix integer programming optimization model for platform location and flows assignment, vehicle routing and data analysis of eco-driving have been developed and applied in the company for this purpose. The cases studied in this thesis show that for some types of projects, economic interest and response to the requirements of CSR evolve in the same direction. For others, a compromise between the economic, social and environmental factors could be a good solution pending new technologies that would ensure sustainable solutions.

Velho, Cassiane Oliveira January 2010 (has links)
In recent decades the logistics activity has received strategic status as an important factor for gaining competitive advantages for businesses. Thus companies have been investing significantly in the development of agile logistics systems and efficient coordination of the supply chains, in which they operate. However, to avoid losing competitiveness and really add value to their business, many of these companies are increasingly focusing on their core business and thus transferring to others some or all of their logistics activities as a way to reduce costs and increase efficiency of their operation. This work addresses the problem of decision-making on outsourcing of logistics activities and how to facilitate the selection of a Third-Party Logistics (3PL). For this, it was developed and proposed a system to support the analysis and selection of a 3PL that combines general concepts of project management and multicriteria analysis to base the choice of the 3PL that better fits the current needs. In particular, we used the AHP - Analytic Hierarchy Process - which could handle qualitative and quantitative aspects, since it has been applied to many decision-making problems in different segments. As a way of validating the proposed methodology, it was partially applied to a manufacturer of diesel engines with a strong bias in its supply chain logistics, which was in process of outsourcing part of their logistics activities. As the most important results, it was found that this methodology adhered to the business environment, supporting the analysis and understanding of the opportunities and risks for the outsourcing of logistics activities, as well as important attributes to be considered in the selection process and choice of a 3PL that is more appropriate to the reality of the contracting company. In addition, it showed that the price is not the most important factor for this decision.

Vaclavik, Marcia Cristiane January 2011 (has links)
There is consensus among scholars and practitioners that Logistics plays an important role in the integration of the market’s Supply Chain. In an increasingly competitive environment, organizations seek solutions and business practices that can help them in their quest for success. One such practice is the outsourcing of logistics operations through the recruitment of specialized firms, so that the contracting organizations can focus on their business, increasing efficiency, improving resource utilization, reducing transportation costs, restructuring their supply chain and increasing their profitability. In this scenario, where the increasing participation of logistics service providers, known as 3PL (third-party logistics providers) becomes a strategic factor for the growth of organizations through increasingly complex alliances, a need arises for performance evaluation mechanisms that effectively reflect the integration and flexibility of the involved resources. Thus, the present study aims to develop a model to evaluate the performance of 3PLs using the methodology of operational research, supported by the AHP method. The company chosen to implement the model was MWM International Motores (MIM) and the model was applied in the national transport of the spare parts process. There were 5 LSPs evaluated using 3 criteria and 13 attributes, both qualitative and quantitative. The main results showed that the adopted system was considered adherent to the environment, assisting in the evaluation process, and allowing the company to encourage its 3PLs to improve their processes and products - the very service provided, mapping, together with its partners, a plan for continuous improvement aimed at achieving better results for both companies.

Bandeira, Renata Albergaria de Mello January 2009 (has links)
Logistics outsourcing is a business practice adopted by a growing number of organizations from a large variety of sectors. The logistics outsourcing process is heavily supported by the literature. Nonetheless, a wrong decision can be a source of corporate problems that may lead to the increase of logistics costs, affecting the company's competitiveness and image. There is a high incidence of unsuccessful cases in outsourcing agreements, mostly due to failures in the decision making process. This fact highlights the complex nature of the logistics outsourcing decision, which involves a large number and a great variety of interdependent criteria, and the lack of understanding, on the part of executives and organizations, concerning the variables that affect the decision process. In this context, the present research reports on a study developed in the Brazilian scene on logistics outsourcing according to the perspective of the hiring company. It is important to mention that the research analyses the outsourcing process to third-party logistics service providers (3PL) because this is still the market tendency. The focus of the thesis consists in identifying the main factors which the organizations should analyze in the decision making process of logistics outsourcing. Hence this research aims to answer the following questions: which are the determinant variables in the decision process of logistics outsourcing and how do they impact on this decision? Thus, both qualitative and quantitative techniques were used, respectively in an exploratory and a confirmatory approach. Initially, interviews were held with logistics executives with the purpose of examining the applicability of the variables selected for the hypothetical model. A multiple case study was also developed in three leading organizations from different sectors that have their logistics activities outsourced. With the case study methodology, the factors were ratified and some variables were added to the hypotheses. Eventually, a survey research confirmed the set of the determinant variables for the decision making process of logistics outsourcing. Different quantitative procedures were used to refine the research instrument, such as Reliability Analysis, Corrected Item-Total Correlation (CITC) Analysis, Exploratory Factor Analysis and Confirmatory Factor Analysis. The structural model confirmed 20 hypotheses. The result was a model with five factors - Strategy, Costs, Environmental characteristics, Characteristics of the Logistics Process and characteristics of the 3PL providers available in the market - and fifteen variables. The main contribution of this research to the business practice is the development of a set of the main variables that logistics managers may analyze in the decision making process of whether to outsource their logistics activities or not.
