The OriginalistsFraser, Alan 01 January 2023 (has links) (PDF)
Edie Meidav convinced me to start a new project. Work on something longer, she suggested. Full of faith, she challenged me to write about what felt most urgent.
I thought of Will—a main character who asks questions. My intention became to interrogate the mid-senior-year mindset of a high school student. Barely adults, on the cusp of making the most significant choices of their lives, feeling both that they have all the information they need and that the world is a farce to be retooled as desired, individuals at this age possess all the budding versions of the same neuroses people carry into their nineties.
For my own trajectory as a young adult, this stage coincided with the adaptation of the internet. The world’s variety then became more accessible, much faster to find, and without limits. Taking authority and norms at face value seemed like one of the most ignorant things anyone could do.
In the early days of the writing, I saw a major conflict developing in Will: not wanting to jump through the hoops laid out for him, but wanting the prizes—love, recognition, and friendship—found on the other side.
Ultimately, I want to remind the reader of their ability to hold two conflicting ideas simultaneously, like the feeling that accompanies the death of someone close: in an instant, despite us all being equally human, all the prior needs of the deceased suddenly hold so much more significance, and all our personal prior needs seem suddenly selfish, worth nothing at all.
To be transparent: you are reading work realized from elements of my own experiences to create composite characters and events I hope still ring true. Despite the loose strings to reality, I want to be clear: this is entirely a work of fiction.

Gang Injunctions Effects: The Experiences of Residents and Enjoined Gang MembersBurnett, Natasha R 01 January 2019 (has links)
Civil gang injunctions (CGIs) are bans on nuisance behavior that have been enacted against gang members. Numerous studies conducted on the efficacy of CGIs have proven that they have little to no long-term effects on the communities in which they are implemented, nor on the gang members enjoined under them and their gang activities. The purpose of this empirical, phenomenological interpretative analysis study was to (a) determine the sociofamilial effects of CGIs on community residents; (b) determine the effects of CGIs on the behaviors and activities of enjoined gang members; and (c) determine the overall efficacy of CGIs based on the perspectives of community residents and enjoined gang members, with the goal of creating avenues to improve CGIs or eliminate them, if necessary. The theoretical framework for this study was Berger and Luckmann's social construction theory. A total of 7 anonymous phone interviews were conducted with community residents, enjoined gang members, and local law enforcement living and/or working in the enjoined neighborhood during the implementation of the first gang injunction in Memphis, TN. Data from these interviews were coded for thematic analysis and constant comparison. The findings were mixed in that some participants expressed that the injunction had positive results for a while and others expressed that it had a negative effect on the community. It was found that the injunction was positively effective, but only on a short-term basis, and that consistent introduction of community resources to address underlying issues that lead to crime would have been a better solution.

The role of Bud23 in the biogenesis of the small ribosomal subunit in Saccharomyces cerevisiaeWhite, Joshua Paul, 1977- 16 February 2011 (has links)
Ribosomes are the cellular structures responsible for the synthesis of protein in all branches of life. All ribosomes are made from a large and small subunit that in turn are composed of protein and RNA. The synthesis of eukaryotic ribosomes is a complex process involving more than 200 factors and spans three cellular compartments: the nucleolus, the nucloplasm, and the cytoplasm. The precise function of most of these ribosome biogenesis factors remains unknown. The RNA component of ribosomes is in part processed from a large RNA transcript that yields most of the RNA present in mature ribosomes. Part of the maturation process involves modification of this ribosomal RNA as processing is carried out.
Recent work constructing protein interaction networks in Saccharomyces cerevisiae suggested the methyltransferase Bud23 was involved in ribosome biogenesis (1). This thesis describes my work to characterize Bud23 and place it within the ribosome biogenesis pathway. Bud23 is a SAM methyltransferase important for the proper biogenesis of the small ribosomal subunit. Here I will demonstrate that Bud23 methylates G1575 of the small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA), and its absence delays export of the SSU rRNA from the nucleolas, and the nucleus, and results in the delayed maturation of the SSU rRNA. Finally, I will show that Bud23 function is connected to small subunit processome factor Utp14 through identification of a Utp14 mutant that suppresses the bud23[Delta] deletion phenotype. / text

Využití inovovaných hnojivových a stimulačních prostředků při zalesňování v PLO 30 - Drahanská vrchovinaBlažek, Zdeněk January 2018 (has links)
The subject of this diploma thesis is a semi-operational research project, which was established with the aim to find out the usability of innovated fertilizers and stimulants. The survey was focused on the growth and development of spruce cultures. This diploma thesis builds on my bachelor thesis and its purpose is to extend the data for two more years of measurement and, above all, to complete a research project on selected pedochemical characteristics. Find out what impact the soil has on each of the Silvamix® tested fertilizers. Variants Agluform® 90S, Silvamix®R30, Silvamix®R30S, Silvamix®R50, Vermaktiv and calcium dolomite were used. Each year samples of the needles were taken and the total elevation, the diameter of the crown and the health status of the spruce culture were measured. For the last two years of observation, the soil samples were taken under the crown of spruce crown. After analysis of the soil samples and their evaluation, it was found that the application of fertilizers has a significant effect on height gain, health status, but also on the soil environment. A deficiency of potassium and magnesium was found in the research site. These deficiencies were the best compared by the Agluform® 90S fertilizer application which was the most successful of all the variants.

The Plight Of The Beautiful People: Sexuality And Death In Less Than Zero And The Doom GenerationMartinez, Ariana M 01 January 2023 (has links) (PDF)
This essay analyzes how the films Less Than Zero and The Doom Generation intersect with their overlapping themes regarding sex, sexuality, and death. The intended goal of the readings in this essay is to examine how queerness was represented in film during the AIDS crisis, specifically through the feature of a sexually fluid trio of friends. It first identifies the common elements of both films, including the gender makeup of the friend group, ambiguous or unrealized queerness, the role of the car in sexual desire, and themes of death and demise. The essay then considers the context of the AIDS crisis and 80s conservatism, Lacanian ethics, and queer theory to dissect how these elements and themes are explored in opposing ways. My central argument then is that Less Than Zero uses these narrative elements in problematic ways to condemn its queer character and, subsequently, queer audiences, while The Doom Generation uses these elements to offer a more respectful and sympathetic view of its queer characters and audiences. This essay stands as another example of queer analysis conducted by a queer researcher to place both Less Than Zero and The Doom Generation in a unique conversation with one another as similar, though ultimately opposing films.

Among all the social problems from Latin America, issues related to education have, in these last thirty years, stood out. The inequality of access and socialization of the knowledge, in a perspective of integral human formation, is highly showed and discussed by politicians, nonetheless throughout the history of Latin American countries, is has changed so little. Many researchers and social movements claim that the worsening of the social education problems in Latin America is based on the interventionist role of the international organizations on the educational politics of these countries, particularly since the '90s, which is marked by the beginning of the neoliberal educational reforms. From this perspective, this paper has as aim learns alternatives to the neoliberal education which is being used in Latin America, specially from the rural social movements. Such as, in Argentina - the Movimiento Campesino de Santiago del Estero (MOCASE – Via Campesina) -, in Brazil - the Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra (MST) -, and in Mexico - the Movimiento Zapatista. To the accomplishment of the investigation process we chose the Extended Case Method, we used as a technique the documental analysis, regarding the nature of our research. Our conclusions point out that the rural social movements, in their struggle for an education which has as objective transform the current relations in social, political, cultural and economical fields, represent a locus of creation for political alternatives and theoretical to the globalized hegemonic educational orientations.

Moderní prášková hnojiva s růstovými stimulátory a jejich využití při zalesňování v Krušných horáchSlivková, Tereza January 2018 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with the use of modern powder fertilizers with growth stimulators, which were used for afforestation of hollow Norway spruce (Picea abies / L./Karst.) after bulldozer soil preparation in the Ore Mountains at LS Klášterec nad Ohří. On these scarified areas of the 7th forest vegetation stage two research areas of Bojiště and Kiosek were established. The battlefield area Bojiště was divided into 6 plots, one of which served only as a check. On these parcels were distinguished Norway spruce (Picea abies / L./Karst.) specimens from growing trees (A) and seedlings (B). Norway spruce seedlings were fertilized with fertilizers series Silvamix® (Sivamix® SR50 + S2, Silvamix® SR30 + S2 and Agluform 90S + S2) and organomineral fertilizers Vermaktiv Stimul and Fungil. Samples of the last year of needles were taken once per year, as well as samples of the soil environment. Support of nutrients were extended and growth spruce cultivation especially by using fertiliziers series Silvamix®. Individual fertilizers were contributed to the promotion of the different nutrients, of course in relation to the composition of fertilizers. Further these fertilizers contributed to improving the vitality of individuals Norway spruce (Picea abies / L./Karst.). The area of the Kiosek was treated with the new fertilizer UNICON. On this area carried two years of research for the sampling of soil samples and the last year needles of Norway spruce (Picea abies / L./Karst.). Against a control variant UNICON has demonstrated the benefits of optimizing the soil enviroment of sprececulture. The overall effect of this fertilizer contributed growth of individuals on the surface and the overall balancing takings nutrients.

Bemöt 90-talister RÄTT för att behålla dem : En kvalitativ studie om 90-talisters förväntan på bemötandet vid anställning / Treat people born in the 90s RIGHT : A qualitative study about people born in the 90s expectations of how to be treated when employedBörjesson, Axelina, Kjällman, Petronella January 2023 (has links)
Today's workplace consists of a diverse workforce that needs to co-exists in order to help organizations reach success. People born in the 90s are thought to be a uniquely different generation with new and different values and expectations compared to previous generations, and therefore more difficult to keep in a workplace. If people born in the 90s don't already exist in your workplace, they will soon. Because of that it’s important for organizations to understand the 90s generation, to make organizations able to meet the expectations, adapt and treat them right, motivate and thereby keep them in the workplace. This study’s purpose is to contribute with a deeper understanding as to how the 90s generation expect to be treated during a new employment and what they need in order to stay in a workplace. To answer this, a qualitative method has been used, where ten semi-structured interviews were conducted. The respondents were students born in the late 90s. The last part of the recruitment process, the induction, means to give new workers an introduction. How this step is conducted can be crucial for whether an employee remains at the workplace or not. A lack of induction where the 90s generation feel that their needs are not being met when they are hired can lead to early dismissal. The study’s result shows that people born in the 90s have high expectations on the induction and treatment from organizations. They expect a well-thought-out induction where information is communicated clearly, and that the process is allowed to take time to make the 90s generation feel safe and comfortable with their new employment. Being introduced to managers and other employees is something the 90s expect, which also means that the reception plays a big role. The 90s want to be treated positively so that they feel welcome in the workplace. The result also shows that a positive attitude is based on a recruitment process that is adapted to the 90s generation. There are several aspects that influence whether people born in the 90s want to stay in a workplace or not. The most important aspect is that there is constant communication in the organization which is both part of a well-thought-out induction but also part of the treatment. By taking into account the expectations of the 90s generation in the workplace, organizations will retain them in the organization, thereby contributing to competitive advantage and success.
