The Role of the Clarinet in ChinaJanuary 2017 (has links)
abstract: Throughout western clarinet art music, there are not only a large number of great performers and classical works, but also a valuable body of literature that has laid a solid foundation for clarinet development and global dispersion. By contrast, Chinese clarinet literature is lacking in quantity and global distribution. However, this is the first comprehensive study that discloses the mysterious mask of China’s clarinet art.
This study does not merely discuss the Chinese clarinet history, but it also introduces important historical events that influenced the development of the Chinese clarinet industry (excluding manufacturing), including Chinese military bands, clarinet music, pedagogy, clarinet figures, and its future direction.
In the conclusion of this paper, the author discusses the deficiency of the Chinese clarinet industry and makes suggestions for solving problems with clarinet players practicing more technique rather than focusing on musicianship, educators’ lack of concentration on teaching and academic research, and the shortage of Chinese clarinet works. Additionally, the author appeals to Chinese clarinet players to actively participate in international activities and the Chinese government to increase incentives to introduce high-level Chinese talents overseas to help make China a better country in any field. / Dissertation/Thesis / Theme and Variations_Shuang Zhu / The Song of Grazing Horses_Shuang Zhu / The Sound of Pamir I_Shuang Zhu / The Sound of Pamir II_Shuang Zhu / The Sound of Pamir III_Shuang Zhu / Doctoral Dissertation Music 2017

Innovation: Chinese Folk Music Influence in Contemporary Clarinet RepertoireJanuary 2013 (has links)
abstract: Several contemporary clarinet works use Chinese folk music elements from different regions in new compositions to entice listener's and performer's appreciation of Chinese culture. However, to date, limited academic research on this topic exists. This research paper introduces six contemporary clarinet works by six Chinese composers: Qigang Chen's Morning Song, Yan Wang's Mu ma zhi ge (The Song of Grazing Horses), An-lun Huang's Capriccio for Clarinet and Strings Op. 41, Bijing Hu's The Sound of Pamir Clarinet Concerto, Mei-Mi Lan's Concerto for Clarinet and String Orchestra with Harp and Percussion, and Yu-Hui Chang's Three Fantasias for Solo Clarinet in B-flat. They are examined from different perspectives, including general structure, style, and rejuvenated folk music use. The focus of this research paper is to investigate the use of Chinese folk music in several works in collaboration with the composers. The author found that although contemporary composers use Chinese folk music differently in their works (i.e., some use melodies, others use harmony, while others use modes), each work celebrates the music and culture of the folk music on which the pieces are based. It is the author's hope to stimulate people's interest in music using Chinese folk music elements, and bring these lesser known works into the common clarinet repertoire. / Dissertation/Thesis / Morning Song / Mu ma zhi ge (The Song of Grazing Horses) / Capriccio for Clarinet and Strings Op. 41 / The Sound of Pamir Clarinet Concerto movement I / The Sound of Pamir Clarinet Concerto movement II / The Sound of Pamir Clarinet Concerto movement III / Concerto for Clarinet and String Orchestra movement I / Concerto for Clarinet and String Orchestra movement II / Three Fantasias for Solo Clarinet in B-flat movement I / Three Fantasias for Solo Clarinet in B-flat movement II / Three Fantasias for Solo Clarinet in B-flat movement III / D.M.A. Music 2013

Processos da reelaboração: um diálogo entre performance e texto / Re-elaboration processes: a dialogue between performance and textBruno Avoglia 04 September 2017 (has links)
The present study aimed to demonstrate the relevance of the technical restructuring of a work, that is, a musical reelaboration to the particularities of new media, focusing on the bass clarinet as a central instrument, triggering a future improvement and adaptation to the new resources of the instrument and its language. Besides this, the purpose of the work was to point out the proposition of an experiment of this instrument to an original non-idiomatic repertoire. In order to do so, the methodological procedure used observed references as reworkings already performed and understood the ways in which one was carried out. The work contributed to the theoretical and practical development of the research in reelaborations for bass clarinet, in this way, favoring the arrangement of a new experimental vector, based on the reelaborations made. Thus, it is concluded that this research, in contrast to the rigor and fidelity to which the reelaboration is usually applied, emphasized the process as a creative and dialogical tool.

The process of sound production on the clarinet reveals substantial importance to performance and, paradoxically, is partially overlooked as a generation and transmission of explicit knowledge perspective. The "hidden" aspect of numerous physical muscle procedures, occurred within the vocal tract, contributes to the complexity evident in addressing the issue, which is strongly supported, therefore, on tacit bases. This work proposes an Instruction Plan, developed and validated in collaboration with a research group constituted for this purpose, concerning the increment of feedback procedures (especially motor and auditory), proprioception and mastery of sound production in the clarinet. The main tool used in instruction plan was the "'Ns' Theory", by means of which the goal is to optimize the control of the different lower lip pressure levels. This control, acting in direct line with procedures for handling the vocal tract and associated to the air flow domain, demonstrated effective functionality in the task of promoting the conditions for maximizing resonance effects in the vocal tract. It was understood that the ability to obtain and sustain an optimal state of relaxation lip, therefore, is one of the most significant means of increasing the sound production in the clarinet. It was also measured the impact of this domain on the performance as a whole. Action research was used as the research methodology for the development and implementation of the instruction plan, which also established important bases of correlation between postural elements and handling of the structures of the vocal tract as well as applicability in the field of teaching / Doutorado / Praticas Interpretativas / Doutor em Música

Musikinstruments påverkan på uppfattningen av karaktärer / Effects of musical instruments on the perception of charactersTåqvist, Christopher January 2017 (has links)

Birth of oscillation in clarinet-like interments with variable control parameter.Bergeot, Baptiste 10 October 2013 (has links)
This research is a contribution to the study of attack transients in clarinet-like instruments. The main objective is to understand the behavior of the instrument when the mouth pressure is increased slowly through time at a constant rate.Although previous research proves that oscillations can appear at a value of the static oscillation threshold, numerical simulations and in vitro experiments show that for gradual increases of the mouth pressure, the audible sound generally appears when mouth pressure reaches a much higher value, called the dynamic oscillation threshold. This phenomenon is referred to as bifurcation delay in this work.A major part of this work follows an analytical approach, using the foundations of dynamic bifurcation theory to study the bifurcation delay in the simple "Raman" clarinet model. The properties of the dynamic oscillation threshold are related to indicators of the time variation of the mouth pressure such as its initial value and its slope. One of the remarkable features of the bifurcation delay is its strong dependence on noise, including that arising from round-off errors of the computer. The properties of the dynamic threshold are different according to whether the noise can be ignored or not.Additionally, an artificial mouth is used on a clarinet-like instrument to show that the bifurcation delay is not only a numerical phenomenon. Experimental observations performed on a clarinet-like instrument blown by an artificial mouth prove that bifurcation delay exists also on real-life systems. These observations show that the properties of the bifurcation delay observed in low-precision simulations are similar to experimental ones.

Electroacoustic Etudes for Clarinet and Pure Data: A Set of Etudes for Clarinet and Electronics for the Advancing MusicianJanuary 2020 (has links)
abstract: Electronic music, including the subgenre of interactive electronic music, has a century-old history and has established itself as a vital and important element of modern music cultures throughout the world. Acoustic musicians in the twenty-first century will be expected to perform and interact with electronic music. Currently, however, few resources are available to either the student or teacher to help advancing young musicians develop their skills working with electronic musical components. A considerable amount of electronic music is prohibitive due to cost, access to equipment, and degree of difficulty. Therefore, a set of works designed to specifically reduce these prohibitive costs seems necessary. As a performer/composer that plays clarinet and as an electronic musician that regularly utilizes the open-source programming software Pure Data (Pd), I feel my composing, performing, and technical experience uniquely positions me to create educational materials. For this project, I will compose/program a collection of electronic etudes for clarinet and electronics that: (1) utilizes Pd to provide electronic accompaniment, (2) is composed for clarinetists of varying experience levels, (3) and will be commercially available as electronic PDF and Pd files. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Music 2020
