Studies of Semiconductors Modified with Nanoscale Light Absorbers for Solar Cell Application

Mahrov, Boriss January 2004 (has links)
Recently, materials such as hole conductors (CuI, CuSCN) and light absorbers (Ru-complexes, CuInS2) have been actively investigated for application in nanocrystalline solar cells. In this thesis combinations of these materials have been studied. In the first part of the thesis, various methods were applied to characterize the electronic structure and photoconversion mechanism of the dye molecule Ru(dcbpyH2)2(NCS)2 when combined with materials for the use in photovoltaic devices. Specifically, the adsorption and electronic structure of the dye molecules adsorbed to semiconductors were investigated by means of photoelectron spectroscopy. The results indicate a chemical bond between the dye molecules and the hole conductors (CuI, CuSCN) via the NCS- groups. In addition, preparation of a TiO2/Ru-dye/CuI solid state model system was studied in situ. These experiments showed a partial breaking of the TiO2-dye bond caused by CuI evaporation. Photovoltage measurements were also performed. These investigations showed a shift in the light absorption threshold of the dye molecules adsorbed onto the hole conductors (CuI and CuSCN), indicating new defect states at the dye/CuSCN interface. Also, charge accumulation and transport in solar cells with CuSCN were compared to liquid electrolyte cells. Measurements showed that the lifetime and transport time of electrons in solar cells with CuSCN are much shorter than in electrolyte cells. In the second part of the thesis, the deposition of CuInS2 onto various metal oxides by spray pyrolysis has been studied with x-ray diffraction and photoelectron spectroscopy. The measurements showed that the morphologies of the substrates play a significant role in the formation of CuInS2 layers. Also, the presence of CdS at TiO2 has a positive influence on the formation of CuInS2.

Optical Properties of Silica-Copper Oxide Thin Films Prepared by Spin Coating

Mårtensson, Niklas January 2011 (has links)
Optical properties of copper oxide nanoparticles in a silica matrix thin film have been investigated. Films were prepared on Si substrates from a sol-gel by spin coating. Four samples with different thicknesses, from 14,5-109 nm, were fabricated. Optical properties were measured with Variable Angle Spectroscopic Ellipsometry. The aim of the project was to gain further understanding of these films that are interesting in applications for solar absorbers as solar selective coatings. Ellipsometricangles Ψ and Δ were measured in the wavelength range from 250-1700 nm. A dispersion model was developed and fitted to experimental data with acceptable results.

Wave energy capture system ¡V surge motion tank

Huang, Kuang-Li 17 February 2011 (has links)
Liquid sloshing in a 2D tank applied on a wave energy capture system and reducing the oscillation of an offshore platform are discussed in this study. A fully nonlinear time-independent finite difference method and the forth-order Runge-Kutta method are implemented to solve the coupled motions of liquid sloshing in a 2D tank with a floating platform. When the external forcing frequency of the Dynamic Vibration Absorber System composed by a tuned liquid damper and a tuned mass damper is identical to the fundamental frequency of the tank, the external force can be effectively diminished by the sloshing-induced force. In the meantime, the maximum effect of tuned mass damper on reducing the amplitude of the floating platform appears. When the frequency of external forcing is close to the first natural frequency of the liquid tank, the coupled effect between the motions of both the tank and the platform can effectively reduce the vibration of the platform and the total energy of the whole system. The Eigenfrequency of a wave capture system is formed by the coupled effect of a liquid tank and a wave capture system. When the excitation frequency of the wave capture system is near its Eigenfrequency, the sloshing-induced force is much larger than that of external and the maximum displacement of the wave energy capture system occurs. As a result, the wave energy capacity of the wave capture system can be averagely increased to 150% by the influence of liquid sloshing in the tank.

Entwicklung des Neutronentransportcodes TransRay und Untersuchungen zur zwei- und dreidimensionalen Berechnung effektiver Gruppenwirkungsquerschnitte

Beckert, C. 31 March 2010 (has links) (PDF)

Fabrication and Characterization of Novel 2SSS CIGS Thin Film Solar Cells for Large-Scale Manufacturing

Jayadevan, Keshavanand 01 January 2011 (has links)
A novel 2SSS (2 Step Solid Selenization) CIGS (Cu, In, Ga, Se) thin film solar cell recipe was developed which can be a replacement to the conventional co-deposition process usually employed for large-scale manufacturing. The co-deposition procedure is faced with multiple problems such as selenium incorporation, effective gallium incorporation in the absorber. It is a 2-step proprietary procedure with better control over growth mechanisms and material utilization for the absorber layer for the CIGS thin film solar cells. It makes use of solid selenium source as preferred by manufacturers. Each step of the 2-step procedure was dealt with separately for stoichiometric analysis and interesting trade-offs between materials such as gallium, indium and selenium was found. Solar cells with this proprietary absorber were fabricated on soda lime glass substrates. Results of the solar cells made with the 2SSS process matched with that of the co-deposition process with the quantum efficiencies near 80% of the co-deposition cells. These experiments are going to serve as the test bed for the pilot line that is intended to be installed at USF's research campus soon. The finished solar cells were characterized. The scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were some of the important tools during the analysis of stoichiometry and structural properties. The device performances were measured with the help of current-voltage (I-V) testing and quantum efficiency (QE) measurements.

The evaluation of a solar-driven aqua-ammonia diffusion absorption heating and cooling cycle / M.C. Potgieter.

Potgieter, Marthinus Christiaan January 2013 (has links)
Several steps are followed in order to evaluate the cycle as the title suggests. The diffusion absorption refrigerator (DAR) cycle performance is evaluated when using helium or hydrogen as auxiliary gas. A slight increase in COP is found when using helium, but it is not sufficient to justify the cost. A secondary simulation of an alternate dual-pressure cycle using a pump is done as feasibility comparison with the same parameters as the diffusion cycle. It was found that the second cycle is not acceptable due to high evaporator temperatures needed to ensure liquid enters the pump instead of partially evaporated solution. This would greatly increase the work input required for what essentially becomes a compressor. Optimisation of the DAR is evaluated by simulating the use of a rectification column and the effects of different design points on overall performance. Meteorological data for Potchefstroom, South Africa is used to perform a yearly analysis on the simulated cycle and to specify a suitable design point. The use of a radiative cooling system as heat sink for the system is then investigated and incorporated into the system model. Finally, the performance characteristics of the simulated DAR cycle are discussed, verified and compared with available data from similar research. It is shown that a 40% solution aqua-ammonia-hydrogen cycle driven by 526 kW of solar thermal energy at 130°C and a system pressure of 1.5 MPa can easily achieve a COP over 0.4 with an air-cooled absorber at 40°C and a water-cooled condenser at 35°C. A 231 kW refrigeration capacity at an average evaporator temperature of –20°C is achieved, satisfying the requirements for a domestic refrigeration system. / Thesis (MIng (Mechanical Engineering))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2013.

Computational analysis of binary-fluid heat and mass transfer in falling films and droplets

Subramaniam, Vishwanath 17 November 2008 (has links)
Vapor absorption systems offer advantages over vapor compression systems for air-conditioning systems in some applications. They use heat as their primary energy input and hence provide opportunities to use solar energy or waste heat to drive these systems. The absorber is the most crucial component of the vapor absorption system and has the largest impact on its performance. Absorber design requires a keen understanding of the underlying heat and mass transfer processes in the absorber. The horizontal tube geometry is by far the most popular absorber geometry, due to the high absorption efficiencies achievable without incurring commensurate pressure drops. Several models have been proposed in the literature to model the heat and mass transfer during absorption over horizontal tube banks. However all of them make very simplistic assumptions about the flow profiles in the absorber. High speed flow visualization studies in the literature have shown that the flow occurs in the form of droplets and the formation and the detachment of these droplets and their impact on the tube has significant effects on the heat and mass transfer. Most absorption models in the literature neglect these flow modes and assume the solution to flow as a uniform film. The present study attempts to numerically model the heat and mass transfer in the absorber taking the realistic drop-wise and wavy film flow patterns into consideration. The impact of the fall of these droplets on the tube causes the lithium bromide solution present on the film on the tube to mix and present newer regions of the solution for vapor absorption. The impact of the droplets also causes waves that propagate axially over the liquid film on the tube. The mixing effect and the waves caused due to droplet impact play a very important role in the heat and mass transfer. Results obtained from this study will aid in better understanding of the vapor absorption process, and in the design of more efficient absorbers.

Hydrodynamic Modelling for a Point Absorbing Wave Energy Converter

Engström, Jens January 2011 (has links)
Surface gravity waves in the world’s oceans contain a renewable source of free power on the order of terawatts that has to this date not been commercially utilized. The division of Electricity at Uppsala University is developing a technology to harvest this energy. The technology is a point absorber type wave energy converter based on a direct-driven linear generator placed on the sea bed connected via a line to a buoy on the surface. The work in this thesis is focused mainly on the energy transport of ocean waves and on increasing the transfer of energy from the waves to the generator and load. Potential linear wave theory is used to describe the ocean waves and to derive the hydrodynamic forces that are exerted on the buoy. Expressions for the energy transport in polychromatic waves travelling over waters of finite depth are derived and extracted from measured time series of wave elevation collected at the Lysekil test site. The results are compared to existing solutions that uses the simpler deep water approximation. A Two-Body system wave energy converter model tuned to resonance in Swedish west coast sea states is developed based on the Lysekil project concept. The first indicative results are derived by using a linear resistive load. The concept is further extended by a coupled hydrodynamic and electromagnetic model with two more realistic non-linear load conditions. Results show that the use of the deep water approximation gives a too low energy transport in the time averaged as well as in the total instantaneous energy transport. Around the resonance frequency, a Two-Body System gives a power capture ratio of up to 80 percent. For more energetic sea states the power capture ratio decreases rapidly, indicating a smoother power output. The currents in the generator when using the Two-Body system is shown to be more evenly distributed compared to the conventional system, indicating a better utilization of the electrical equipment. Although the resonant nature of the system makes it sensitive to the shape of the wave spectrum, results indicate a threefold increase in annual power production compared to the conventional system.
