Strengths And Talents Of Potential Administrators In Orange County Public Schools, Florida

Anderson, Arthur 01 January 2008 (has links)
With the increased demands on principals and a shortage of qualified, acceptable candidates, school districts that have to replace principals are in a difficult position. These factors, combined with the importance that the principal role has in relation to student achievement, make the identification of potential administrators and the hiring process for new administrators a top priority for all school districts. This study answered the following two major questions; a) what characteristics or talents, as identified by the StrengthsFinder profile, did Orange County Public School principals in 2007 look for in identifying potential school administrators and b) what differences, if any, exist within the existing variables (school level, certification, gender, and prior experiences). The Clifton StrengthsFinder Profile was utilized to identify the strengths or talents of a group of 61 teachers within Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) who were identified by their principals as potential school based administrators. Of those 61 participants in the Aspiring Leader Academy, the following five strengths were most commonly identified: a) Relator (45.9%), b) Achiever (37.8%), c) Responsibility (37.7%), d) Learner (36.1%) and e) Maximizer (25.9%). In comparing talents across demographic data, the talents identified for participants at all levels (elementary, middle, and high) were not statistically different, supporting the notion that talents principals looked for in identifying potential administrators were relatively the same at all three levels.

A Phenomenological Study of Tenure-Track Faculty Serving in Dual Roles as Administrators

Carter, Keri L 01 December 2022 (has links)
This qualitative, phenomenological study explores the lived experiences of tenure-track faculty serving in dual roles as administrators at Carnegie classified R2 and R3 higher education institutions within the United States. Fourteen participants completed one-on-one, semi-structured interviews about their lived experiences as tenure-track faculty members serving in dual roles. Participants discussed rewards and motivations as well as challenges. Additionally, participants discussed perceptions of their academic identities. Key themes emerged during data analysis. Rewards and motivations included the following: Community change agent and student advocate, a “seat at the table,” collegiality, flexibility, confidence from prior experience and clear tenure procedures, and job security and potential for career advancement. Challenges included workload and time management, research, operational confusion, politics including power dynamics and bureaucratic or hierarchical obstacles, changing conditions in higher education, professional invisibility, untenured stress and anxiety, and personal obstacles such as family and health issues. Themes related to academic identities included self-identity in relation to audience, perceptions from others based on interaction, and metaphors of identity. The findings from this study led to recommendations for best practice concerning tenure processes and policies as well as recommendations for dual role processes and policies. The findings from this study also revealed a need for more research concerning dual roles to aid in the creation of more equitable policy and practice for faculty serving in dual roles both pre- and post-tenure.

The beginning teacher program: how administrative or peer teacher attitude and peer teacher assignment affect its success

Henris, Elaine C. 01 January 1987 (has links) (PDF)
Florida's Beginning Teacher Program was evaluated to determine if there were significant differences in administrative attitude and perception of success between Orange County and Seminole County. Further evaluation was conducted to determine if the four possible gender-pairings of beginning teachers and peer teachers/mentors resulted in differing success rates. Finally, the program was examined to determine if administrative or peer teacher/mentor attitude was related to the success of the program. Beginning teachers, their peer teachers/mentors and administrators in Orange County and Seminole County were surveyed to accomplish these evaluations, using the Administrative Attitude Scale and the Beginning Teacher Success Scale developed for the study. Statistical differences were found between Orange County and Seminole County on both of the survey instruments, indicating that differences in implementation of state guidelines can result in differing attitudes and success rates. These results suggest the need for comparative studies in order to evaluate the differing plans of implementation. The gender-pairing combination of male beginning teachers with male peer teachers/mentors consistently showed the most negative results on the Beginning Teacher Success Scale. Study of this phenomenon is needed in order to determine the causes and cures for this group's poorer success rate. Administrative attitude was not statistically related to the success of the program. This finding was in contrast to the previous research, which indicated that the attitude of a 'helping adult' was the most critical factor in the success of a beginner. Study is needed to determine if this is a result unique to the educational community. Administrative comments indicated, however, that their attitude toward the participants in the program was much more favorable than their attitude toward the program itself, and this may provide a key to understanding these results. In Orange County, peer teacher/mentor attitude was not related to the success rate. However, in Seminole County there was a statistical relationship between peer teacher/mentor attitude and beginning teacher perception of success. There may have been a greater commitment on the part of the peer teachers/mentors in Seminole county because they were financially reimbursed. Although there were variations in results between counties and groups in the studies, the survey instruments indicated that the Beginning Teacher Program was achieving success, and that administrative and peer teacher attitude was moderately positive.

Analyzing the Demand for Instructional Personnel in the Virginia Public School System: 1999-2000

Perry, Michael Lee 20 April 2000 (has links)
Converging demographic, societal, and political conditions are raising concerns among educational policy makers regarding Virginia's capacity to meet the demand for high quality instructional personnel. The variables affecting demand include shifts in student enrollments, efforts to meet Virginia Standards of Accreditation, retirement rate, efforts to increase diversity in instructional positions, efforts to reduce staffing ratios, increased technology in the classroom, legislative mandates, competition for instructional personnel, salary and other quality of life issues, rising licensure standards, and non-public school pupil enrollment. This research is a quantitative study that combines descriptive and correlational research methods. One purpose of this study is to aggregate and summarize data from Virginia school districts that will provide important information for educational policy makers. The second purpose is to create a paradigm that will quantify and rank order the variables that affect the demand for educators in Virginia. The third purpose of this study is to place school districts into groupings according to variables that influence demand for instructional personnel. The k-means cluster analysis procedure was utilized for this purpose. The Virginia Public School Systems' Instructional Personnel Profile: 1999-2000, a survey commissioned by the Virginia Department of Education, was sent to the 132 Virginia public school districts. A total of 126 school districts responded. This survey provided the data used in this study. This survey was developed because there is no uniform, statewide system to collect demographic data for PreK-12 instructional personnel in Virginia. The results find that Virginia is experiencing shortages of instructional personnel. Special education, mathematics, science, and technology endorsement areas are expected to experience the most critical shortages. Competition from other Virginia school districts, retirement, efforts to reduce teacher to pupil ratios, and salaries are reported as the variables that most influence demand for personnel. Virginia public school districts are clustered into two groups using the k-means cluster analysis procedure. / Ph. D.

Äldre och ensamhet : En kartläggning av sociala insatser för äldre personer i Dalarnas kommuner

Hiltunen, Tiina, Jonsson, Malin January 2015 (has links)
There is limited research on how care administrators in elderly care work with loneliness among older people. For this reason, the study's main purpose is to examine how care administrators in Dalecarlian counties are working to investigate the social needs as a result of loneliness among older people and to find out which municipal-based social interventions that are offered for these individuals and on what grounds. The study was conducted based on a quantitative approach, were we have used a questionnaire that includes questions designed to answer the study’s purpose. Interpretative framework for the analysis of the empirical material consists of Lipsky 's theory of street-level bureaucracy. The study’s results show that there is a need to both expand and develop the municipal-based social interventions for the elderly and to develop procedures on how to work with loneliness among older people. The study demonstrates a need for more research, both international and national, about how care administrators are working to identify loneliness among older people.
