"Det är mycket som händer i huvudet..." : Distansstudenters upplevelser av lärande i koppling till studier och yrkespraktik / Distance students' experiences of learning in relation to their studies and occupational practice

Strand, Malin January 2009 (has links)

/
The aim of this study was to describe how distance students in higher education experience learning. The focus of the study is the connection between the students’ professional experience/occupational practice and their learning. The survey is founded on a qualitative research perspective and has a phenomenological approach. The empirical survey was carried out through interviews with five students who train to become teachers for pre-school and pre-school class. The interviews were processed and analyzed on the basis of the research questions, and resulted in a number of general areas and themes. The results indicate that the students experience that their work affect their learning. They have a practical attitude towards their studies and relate to their work practice when studying. The students can see many advantages in working alongside their studies and consider that their experience, to a great extent, is made the most of in their education. The students experience that the effect the studies have had in their occupational practice is, above all, that the they can put their actions into words and reflect upon their own work to a greater extent than before.

Teaching Shakespeare’s Romeo and Julietin L2 adult education : A qualitative study on teachers’ and students’ opinions on Shakespeare and his language as a topic in the EFL classroom in formal and non-formal adult education

Korcsolan, Judit January 2011 (has links)
This essay presents a literary study for adult students of English at English A level at Komvux (municipal adult education) and Vuxenskola (a study association for adult non-formal learning). It has its basis in the question whether reading Shakespeare in the original version is suitable for language learners as form, and is beneficial as content. The classic play Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare features in the course book Read and Log on used by the English A group at Komvux in my chosen municipality. The primary aims of the study were to explore teachers’ attitude and views on teaching literature – the classics in general, and Shakespeare in particular – to adult language learners, and students’ reactions and opinions about a lesson on Shakespeare and Romeo and Juliet in the original language with regards to content and usefulness.

A critical evaluation of assessment practices in music literacy programmes for young adults / Jacomine Pretorius

Pretorius, Jacomine January 2007 (has links)
The topic of assessment has attracted wide-spread attention in the discipline of music education in recent decades. However, most research centres on school-based assessment, and then mainly on the assessment of practical music subjects. Current assessment practices in music literacy programmes (such as 'paper-and-pencil' and standardized tests) counteract what is arguably the most important goal of music education, namely the development of musicianship. Therefore, in this study, my aim is to investigate assessment practices in music literacy courses for young adults, and to show how assessment in these courses can contribute to the development of musicianship. In order to reach these aims, the terms 'musicianship' and 'music literacy' are defined. The importance of a guiding philosophy for assessment is highlighted and constructivism is discussed as an example of such a philosophy, since constructivist principles largely correspond with the principles of assessment and adult education. Principles for effective assessment are subsequently established before being applied to the assessment of music literacy outcomes. Finally, the need for further research about various topics that can inform assessment practices in music subjects is pointed out. / Thesis (M.Mus.)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2007.

Κίνητρα και εμπόδια στη μάθηση ενήλικων εκπαιδευόμενων : η περίπτωση του ΚΕΕ Πάτρας / Motivations and barriers to learning of adult learners : the example of ΚΕΕ Patras

Στεφάνου, Ιωάννης 12 April 2013 (has links)
The work that followed, focused on adults who attend the KEE Achaia, which offers courses and training in several specialties. Non-formal education and adult education in Greece, according to the issue of incentives that motivate adult learners in monitoring educational programs have not been investigated adequately. The research part of investigating the use of two tools: a) Scale of Participation in Education (Boshier) which is a typology of seven factors that describe the incentives that motivate adult learners to participate in educational programs and b) Questionnaire (LSQ of Honey & Mumford) which is designed to measure the preferred way of learning by adults, and the relative intensity of four different learning modes, energetic, stochastic, theorist and pragmatist or experimenting. The sample consisted of 156 students in the KEE Patras. The work concludes with the presentation of results in relation to our research questions are discussed in relation to the existing literature. Below are suggestions for future research efforts that will provide more knowledge on the issue of incentives and types of learning for adults interested in monitoring educational programs.

Basso, Elsa Mónica Bonito 22 August 2011 (has links)
Submitted by Marcelo Teixeira (mvteixeira@ucs.br) on 2014-06-03T12:18:56Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Elsa Monica Bonito Basso.pdf: 1156315 bytes, checksum: 2b3e24f03090617cd4eb117834e9f767 (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2014-06-03T12:18:56Z (GMT). This study is linked to Post-Graduation Program in Education of Universidad de Caxias do Sul- Master in Education- in research line “Education, Language, and Technology” and , it is also linked to a research project “Aspects of reading training and its repercussions in the relationship between efficient professional and reading (TEAR 5)”, also developed at Universidade de Caxias do Sul. The methodological procedures used included a research instrument which consisted in a questionnaire, containing an experience account. From the latter, a textual discourse analysis was done (Bardin and Moraes) together with a dialectic analysis of the referred aspects. It was noticed that the contents of foreign language classes for older adults needs to be reformulated so as to be more significant. Based on the piece of research done, two aspects: subjectivity and expression of feelings are highlighted, which leads to suggest a “new” element to be included in foreign language teaching for this age: aesthetics, considered as a possibility of seeing life in another way. The aesthetic element, as studied by Bense, Ostrower, Hermann, and Paviani appears together with the process of reflection in the act of learning, as a means of attaining autonomy in the cognitive development of the historic individual (concept introduced by Hegel). Relating ethics and aesthetics, art and life, this proposal is composed, also referring to uses of text and language, in Vygotsky‟s and Bakhtin‟s approach, as a way of having the student talking to himself/herself, to others, and to the world. This study shows that, when this dialogue takes place, the student learns, and at the same time, builds his/her subjectivity. So, this study suggests including aesthetics elements in foreign language curricula for older adult students, and continuing research about the possibility of these points being also relevant in other areas of teaching and learning at the referred age.

A Case Study of Four Female Electrician Technicians in a Male-Dominated Occupation

Dickerson, Maniphone S 12 November 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to understand the reasons the four female participants decided to pursue electrician technician training, their perspectives of the apprenticeship program, their perceptions of successful employment in a male-dominated occupation, and differences in treatment based on their gender. The exploratory questions that guided the study were: what led the females to make the decision for applying to the electrician technician apprenticeship; what was the nature of the education and training experiences of the participants in the electrician technician apprenticeship program, what were the participants’ perceptions of being successful in advancement within the workforce as a female electrician technician; and what gender differences did the participants experience as female electrician technicians? The theoretical framework for this study is based on feminist standpoint theory (Harding, 1991, 1993, 1987; Hartsock, 1997, 1998a 1998b; Smith 1987, 1997). Data collection methods consisted of a demographics questionnaire, semi-structured interviews, participant journals, researcher’s reflexive journal notes, and electrician apprenticeship program data. The cross-case analysis generated five major themes: family support, independence, mentors, self-directedness, and gender stereotypes. These five themes included discussions of the micro, meso, and macro levels in a male-dominated occupation. Implications for practitioners and policy makers are described. This study contributes empirical research on feminist standpoint theory and females in male-dominated occupations. It also adds to the body of literature on female electrician technicians’ decision processes, which are rarely studied, and success in a male-dominated occupation.

Critical theory, adult learning and a 'xenophobia': a critical perspective on Umoja wa Afrika's human rights peer education programme

Mati, Shepherd Ayanda January 2011 (has links)
Magister Educationis - MEd / The impact of global migration on local contexts has spawned new issues and a range of social responses. These include the emergence of ‘xenophobia’ in the terrain of discrimination and the subsequent development of popular educational responses to this. As part of popular educational responses, adult education programmes have assumed an important role in changing people’s attitudes. This long research paper presents a critical analysis of how a human rights and counter-xenophobia peer educators’ programme enables young adults to develop a critical consciousness about human rights and ‘xenophobia’. The research focused on learning materials, course content, training methodology and processes of a three-day human rights and counter- xenophobia workshop held by Umoja wa Afrika, a local non-governmental organization, in March/April 2007 at Goedgedacht, just outside Cape Town. The research was based on qualitative methodology which included an exploration of relevant literature, interviews with participants and facilitators, as well as the researcher’s critical reflections. The research was located within a critical theory framework in the field of adult learning, and drew from the work of Paulo Freire (1970) and Stephen Brookfield(2005). The key finding of the study is that the experience of the workshop enabled participants to develop a critical awareness - but not necessarily a critical understanding of human rights and ‘xenophobia’. The participants identified specific factors that contributed to such awareness. These included the diverse composition of participants, the ‘accompanying’ facilitation style, and the interactive training methodology. This study makes a contribution to understanding human rights peer education in the South African context and the extent to which such provision could enable participants to develop a critical understanding of human rights and xenophobia. This study is an attempt to make an original contribution in this area. As such it adds to literature in applied critical methodology. / South Africa
