Establishing the knowledge, perceptions and views of new entry level recruits in a South African military training setting on HIV/AIDS to promote HIV/AIDS awareness amongst young soldiersVan Heerden, Rachel 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2015. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The vulnerability and risky behaviours of young people is a growing concern in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The target group for this study were young people entering the armed force to commence with their initial military training at a military training setting in the Western Cape. These recruits were from all the nine provinces in South Africa. The perceptions, views and basic knowledge of young recruits on HIV/AIDS were assessed through the application of a standardized structured questionnaire. Data analysis was done by using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The findings of the study presented high levels of knowledge on HIV/AIDS. However, misconceptions on the transmission of HIV are still a huge concern due to the fact that a small percentage of the respondents are under the impression that HIV/AIDS is curable. Moreover, almost all of the respondents believed that it is very easy to get HIV, in contrast to their exceptional level of knowledge on the transmission routes of HIV. In addition, some of the respondents were also under the impression that HIV can be transmitted through the bite of a mosquito. Recommendations include the implementation of routine scheduled HIV/AIDS awareness programmes with up-scaling of HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness campaigns during military training. Hierdie rekrute was afkomstig vanaf al nege provinsies in Suid Afrika.

Managing health services support to military operationsBricknell, Martin Charles Marshall January 2011 (has links)
This is a submission for a PhD by portfolio on the subject of managing health services support to military operations. It is based upon my prior published work supported by an ‘action research’ analysis of the application of this prior knowledge to my experiences from spending a year in the South of Afghanistan from October 2009 to November 2010. The submission is structured around three thematic areas; medical planning to support military operations, management of military medical operations and international military medical engagement with indigenous health sectors. The submission presents evidence for my contribution to original thinking in each of these thematic areas by means of a review of my published work, my application of these concepts in support of NATO operations in Afghanistan and evidence of the impact of these concepts in influencing other military organisations. The first theme area on medical planning to support military operations will be supported by 3 monographs. These will describe the context of medical support to military operations in the current security environment, the use of the ‘estimate’ process to develop a medical plan and the analytical process termed ‘the casualty estimate’. The second theme covers the management of military medical operations. This is the largest section and contains monographs on pre-hospital helicopter medical evacuation, aeromedical evacuation movement between hospitals, managing casualty flows, deployed hospital care, and quality assurance of the medical system. The final theme covers international military medical engagement with medical support systems for indigenous security forces and indigenous civilian health systems. The closing section of this submission reflects on my two tours in Afghanistan comparing my recent experiences with my views at the end of my first tour in 2006/07. My whole thesis provides evidence of my considerable personal learning from my experiences managing medical support to military operations. This section will highlight how I have tried to share this experience both personally and across multiple stakeholder organisations to ensure my observations can be converted into lessons learned.

The IRA, Sinn Fein and the hunger strike of 1981Page, Michael von Tangen January 1993 (has links)
This thesis examines the 1981 hunger strike by republican prisoners in Northern Ireland against the removal of special category status from newly convicted paramilitary prisoners on 1 March 1976, the fast was part of a protest that began in 1976. The thesis opens with an examination of the origins of the Provisional Irish Republican Army in 1969 and the emergence of a younger leadership in the late 1970's, and evaluates the significance of the prisons in Irish history. The development of the prisoners protests ranging from the refusal to put on a uniform and perform prison work to the rejection of sanitary or washing facilities, is analysed. The prisoners demands are examined in the context of British and international law. The campaign in support of the republican prisoners conducted outside the Maze Prison, including the formation of the Relatives Action Committee and the National H-Block/Armagh Committee is surveyed, and the female "dirty" protest at Armagh Prison is examined. The medical, ethical, and moral dilemmas presented by hunger striking are identified and the thesis examines the debate whether the men who died were suicides or martyrs. The 1980 and 1981 hunger strikes are examined with particular attention to the efforts to bring about a compromise with the British government and the factors leading to a new hunger strike in 1981 and to the intervention of the Catholic Church with the prisoners relatives which ended the fast. The hunger strike is analysed regarding its effect internationally in building up republican support, and in the Province where it acted as the base for the future success of Provisional Sinn Fein later in the decade.

Profylaktická antidota proti nervově paralytickým látkám v České republice / Prophylactic antidotes against nerve agents in Czech RepublicOTRADOVCOVÁ, Dita January 2015 (has links)
Chemical warfare agents can be currently considered a high risk to humans. Group of nerve agents, is considered the most dangerous. These highly toxic substances have a rapid onset of action, the organism will receive all the entry gates, therapy intoxication is always difficult and death occurs often. The body's resistance to the effects of nerve agents at the expected intoxication increases not only prophylactic administration of antidotes , eg. when working in a contaminated environment after a terrorist attack, but also potentiates the subsequent antidotal therapy after exposure. This thesis is dedicated to gain in depth understanding of nerve agents with aspect of pharmacological prophylaxis. The introduction presents combat toxic substances in general, differentiation due to its effect on human with possible damage to the organism and brief characteristics of every basic type of nerve agents with examples included. Further on the theoretical part focuses on issues of nerve agents. The history of their development and well-known applicationsis breifly mentioned, respectively, abuse in the world. The thesis mentions of the Conventions on the prohibition of chemical weapons in connection with the misuse. Thesis continues dividing type nerve agents, describing the mechanism of action, acute toxicity and its symptoms, diagnosis and therapy of poisoning. Degree, extent and rate of damage to the body caused by nerve agents depends on many factors. A major factor which influences the ultimate toxic effect are taken input. Body damage can be caused, for example. Inhalation administration, contamination of broken or intact skin, ingestion, or hitting the conjunctiva. Since they have nerve agent toxicity and high speed action, protective and preventive measures are an important element to prevent the penetration of substances into the body. The Army of the Czech Republic ensures the protection of personal protective equipment, decontamination of affected skin and pharmacological prophylaxis. Another part of this work is the term prophylaxis and related topics, especially pharmacological prophylaxis. Directions pharmaceutical prophylaxis currently can be divided into three directions - protection against acetylcholinesterase inhibition, administration of antidotes and normal use Scavengers called. "Scavengers". The body's resistance to the effects of nerve agents at the expected intoxication not only increases prophylactic administration of antidotes, but also potentiates the subsequent antidotal therapy after exposure. Prophylactics PANPAL and TRANSANT are in equipment of Czech Army, in the work is devoted more attention to them. Both of these products were developed in the Czech Republic. There are also presented antidotal remedies of first aid, which are available for the Army of the Czech Republic. The practical part of this thesis aims to compare the prophylactic antidotes in the Czech Republic and in selected countries of NATO from four perspectives - onset, prophylactic activities, application forms, and adverse effects. An analysis of the available Czech and foreign professional articles, publications and studies and the subsequent comparative analysis of the various aspects and evaluate various selected countries is used to achieve this goal. These resulting data then point to the position of the Czech Republic in the field of prevention against intoxication by nerve agents - The Army of Czech Republic that has put in service two prophylactic antidotes that achieve the best results investigational products. It may therefore be said that the Army of the Czech Republic currently has a combination of prophylactic best in the world, which is relatively free of side effects has easy application and an unnecessarily long duration of action. This result is even answer the research question - Prophylactic antidotes in the Czech Republic are comparable according to the given parameters with antidotes in selected countries.
