Semantic Framing of Speech : Emotional and Topical Cues in Perception of Poorly Specified Speech

Lidestam, Björn January 2003 (has links)
The general aim of this thesis was to test the effects of paralinguistic (emotional) and prior contextual (topical) cues on perception of poorly specified visual, auditory, and audiovisual speech. The specific purposes were to (1) examine if facially displayed emotions can facilitate speechreading performance; (2) to study the mechanism for such facilitation; (3) to map information-processing factors that are involved in processing of poorly specified speech; and (4) to present a comprehensive conceptual framework for speech perception, with specification of the signal being considered. Experi¬mental and correlational designs were used, and 399 normal-hearing adults participated in seven experiments. The main conclusions are summarised as follows. (a) Speechreading can be facilitated by paralinguistic information as constituted by facial displayed emotions. (b) The facilitatory effect of emitted emotional cues is mediated by their degree of specification in transmission and ambiguity as percepts; and by how distinct the perceived emotions combined with topical cues are as cues for lexical access. (c) The facially displayed emotions affect speech perception by conveying semantic cues; no effect via enhanced articulatory distinctiveness, nor of emotion-related state in the perceiver is needed for facilitation. (d) The combined findings suggest that emotional and topical cues provide constraints for activation spreading in the lexicon. (e) Both bottom-up and top-down factors are associated with perception of poorly specified speech, indicating that variation in information-processing abilities is a crucial factor for perception if there is paucity in sensory input. A conceptual framework for speech perception, comprising specification of the linguistic and paralinguistic information, as well as distinctiveness of primes, is presented. Generalisations of the findings to other forms of paralanguage and language processing are discussed.

Musical expectation modelling from audio : a causal mid-level approach to predictive representation and learning of spectro-temporal events

Hazan, Amaury 16 July 2010 (has links)
We develop in this thesis a computational model of music expectation, which may be one of the most important aspects in music listening. Many phenomenons related to music listening such as preference, surprise or emo- tions are linked to the anticipatory behaviour of listeners. In this thesis, we concentrate on a statistical account to music expectation, by modelling the processes of learning and predicting spectro-temporal regularities in a causal fashion. The principle of statistical modelling of expectation can be applied to several music representations, from symbolic notation to audio signals. We first show that computational learning architectures can be used and evaluated to account behavioral data concerning auditory perception and learning. We then propose a what/when representation of musical events which enables to sequentially describe and learn the structure of acoustic units in musical audio signals. The proposed representation is applied to describe and anticipate timbre features and musical rhythms. We suggest ways to exploit the properties of the expectation model in music analysis tasks such as structural segmentation. We finally explore the implications of our model for interactive music applications in the context of real-time transcription, concatenative synthesis, and visualization.

Παντελή, Μαρία 07 June 2013 (has links)
Developmental dyslexia is a specific learning difficulty in acquiring literacy skills that manifests despite normal IQ, adequate educational opportunity and in the absence of any obvious sensory or neurological damage. According to the “Phonological Representations Hypothesis”, a hypothesis that has been supported by research in English, a core deficit for individuals with dyslexia is a difficulty in accurately storing and retrieving the sound sequences that make up words, or “phonological representations”. In this thesis the “Phonological Representations Hypothesis” of dyslexia was tested and elaborated. Two groups of 25 (chosen from normal classes) and 20 (with formal diagnosis from the National Center of Diagnosis, Differential Diagnosis and Educational Support of Greece) dyslexics were assessed alongside chronological age and reading ability matched groups. Mild difficulties of dyslexics were found as far as the quality of the phonological representations is concerned, as indexed by picture naming. Assossiations between performance in picture naming and performance on related input and output phonological processing tasks and phonological awareness taks were not in all cases strong. Possible reasons for dyslxexic’s phonological difficulties were investigated at both cognitive and perceptual levels. As far as the cognitive level is concerned, “frequency” rather than “ length” of the phonological representation was found to be associated more strongly with the quality of the phonological representation of all students independently of their reading ability. As far as the perceptual level is concerned, two different explanatory factors for dyslexic’s difficulties in phonological processing were assessed: a. perception of rapidly presented auditory stimuli (Tallal, 1980) and b. perception of the perceptual center of acoustic signals (p-center, Goswami, 2002). Results are not stronlgy supportive of the two hypotheses tested concerning deficits in parameters of perception of acoustic stimuli.

Machado, Márcia Salgado January 2017 (has links)
Introduction: Otitis media with recurrent effusion in the first five years of life is considered an indicator of risk for alterations in central auditory processing (CAP). However, no studies were found evaluating CAP in subjects with chronic otitis media. Due to the severity and chronicity of the disease, the relevance of this study stands out. Objective: To investigate and analyze the impact of chronic non-cholesteatomatous otitis media on central auditory processing and on neuropsychological aspects in adolescents. Methods: This was a cross-sectional, observational study in which 34 adolescents aged 12 to 18 years with a diagnosis of chronic non-cholesteatomatous otitis media from an outpatient clinic for individuals with chronic otitis media were recruited from a hospital in southern Brazil. A control group of 34 adolescents matched by age, sex, family income and maternal schooling was established for study. The evaluation of the subjects was performed through the following procedures: anamnesis, tonal threshold audiometry, logoaudiometry, behavioral evaluation of central auditory processing battery (Masking Level Difference- MLD, Synthetic Sentence Identification with ipsilateral competitive message- SSI / MCI, Random Gap Detection Test- RGDT, Duration Pattern Sequence- DPS and Digit Dichotic Test- DD) and some subtests of the Neupsilin Brief Neuropsychological Assessment Instrument (attention, working memory and executive function). Results: In relation to CAP, a statistically significant difference was observed between the means observed between the study and control groups in all the tests performed: MLD (p = 0.001), SSI in 0 dB signal-to-noise ratio in both ears (p <0.001), SSI in -15dB signal-to-noise ratio in both ears (p = 0.001), RGDT (p < 0,001), DPS (p=0,002), DD in the right ear (p = 0.001) and DD in the left ear (p= 0.003). In the Neupsilin sub-tests, a significant difference was observed between groups in the following sub-tests: digit sequence repetition (p = 0.011), digit ascending order (p = 0.025), auditory sentence span (p = 0.002), and Phonemic verbal fluency (p = 0.001). Conclusions: Impact on PAC and on subtests of attention, memory and executive function were observed in adolescents with chronic non-cholesteatomatous otitis media. Thus, the need to refer subjects with the disease for evaluation and therapeutic intervention is emphasized.

However, the specific mechanisms have not been fully elucidated and the results are controversial. This study purposed to investigate the auditory perception in women during the menstrual cycle. In this research we developed two articles: the first is a systematic review entitled "auditory perception evaluation in women during the menstrual cycle: a systematic review", which purposed to pursue studies that show the relationship between hormones and auditory perception. The final sample of this systematic review consisted of seven articles. It was found that gonadal steroid hormones can interfere with the auditory perception of women, pointing to the dichotic tests as the one used for assessing auditory perception in this population. This article has been submitted for publication in the Journal of Otolaryngology. The second article was developed with empirical data from field research, which aimed to investigate the dichotic listening women during the menstrual cycle. The participants were 20 volunteers, 09 female and 11 male. They underwent a basic audiological evaluation, blood plasma collection (women only) and evaluation of dichotic listening through three behavioral tests: dichotic SSW, dichotic digits and consonant-vowel. There was improved performance of the right ear in the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle for the SSW test, with significant results. Moreover, when the ears were compared at each stage, there is better performance right ear in both phases and groups for the consonant-vowel pattern, showing significant results. This article will be submitted to codas journal.

The sample of this study was comprised of 30 adults (15 blinds (Experimental Group - EG) and 15 with normal vision (Control Group - CG)), 7 females and 8 males in each group from 18 to 30 years old, all with normal hearing acuity. All measurements were made by the forced-choice method between two alternatives. In this method, the volunteer had always to choose the certain stimulus informed previously by the experimenter (the test stimulus) between two stimuli. The other stimulus showed was a distracter stimulus. The measurements were made in 3 experimental sessions, one for each stimulus. In each experimental session, 20 pairs of stimuli were presented at random, one stimulus was the test stimulus and the other the distracter stimulus. The musical notes used as test stimulus were D, F and A in the first octave of the piano. The distracter stimulus were the musical notes that are neighboring the test note according to the standard musical notes scale (it means that when D was the test note, the distracter notes were C and E; to the F note, the distracters were E and G). Before the beginning of the experiment, the test stimulus of the session was presented for five consecutive times and the experiment only began when the experimenter was sure that the volunteer had understood all the instructions. The rate of discrimination (the number of rights divided per the number of presentations) for each musical note were gathered according to condition (CG and EG). The statistical analysis (One-Way ANOVA) did not show significant differences between the groups F (2, 27) = 2.17, p > 0.05 to discriminate musical notes. These results suggest that the congenital lack of vision do not cause changes in the ability to discriminate musical notes in blind adults.
