Akademické identity v kontextu Mentoringového programu pro začínající vědkyně a vědce / Academic Identities in the Context of Mentoring Program for Early-Career ScientistsFucimanová, Martina January 2018 (has links)
The diploma thesis is based on interviews with participants of the Mentoring program for early career scientists. The paper presents an analysis of the ways in which interview participants relate to what they believe is science. The aim of the analysis is to find out whether their understanding of science is gender-related and what features carry the academic identity of people actively participating in the mentoring program. The theoretical frameworks are the epistemology of science, the theory of mentoring, the scientific environment in the Czech Republic and the work of Pat O'Connor, Clare O'Hagan and Julie Brannen which deal with the research of academic identities in the current neoliberal academic environment.

Akademická kvalita nebo vzdálenost: Efekt globálních žebříčků a geografické vzdálenosti na akademickou mobilitu s použitím gravitačních a radiačních modelů / Academic Quality or Distance?: Effects of global ranking and geographical distance on academic mobility utilizing gravity and radiation modelsRepko, Šimon January 2020 (has links)
Mediators of scientific knowledge are currently large scientific citation databases and platforms build upon them as they have conquered the role of the librarians in the digital environment. Direct utilization of bibliographic data for analysis of international academic mobility helps to gain insight into behavior of high impact international scholars. Geographic structure of global academia facilitates exploration of the prospect that Gravity and Radiation models can be complements to each other. In addition, author challenges role of university rankings as a principal driver of decision-making process for academic mobility.

Applying MBTI to analyzing shōnen manga characters : A case study of My Hero AcademiaSuvanto, Marttaleena January 2020 (has links)
This is a case study of a popular shōnen manga, My Hero Academia, written andillustrated by Kōhei Horikoshi. The study’s aim is to determine the personality typesof five characters, while utilizing the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. The secondaryaim is finding out which details help in the MBTI analysis and which do not. Thethird aim is to look into what are the difficulties of executing this kind of study. Theinitial focus of the analysis was the characters’ actions, dialogue, body language, facial expressions, use of role language and how the manga artist utilizes theJapanese scripture. The final results show that the characters are INFJ, ENTP, ENFP,INTJ and ESTJ types, and that the most helpful methods are to look at acombination of the characters’ actions, speech, body language, behavior, andexpressions. In addition, the method of analysis occasionally depends on thecharacter in question. While the scripture does not help in gaining the results, thechoice of language for the characters gives additional affirmation for the resultsbut does not work by itself to affirm any MBTI types. The main challenge is decidingwhich of the MBTI type pair polarities has more value to the character’s personalityto become the preference.

An Exploratory Study on the Experiences of Emerging Academics at the University of Cape Town (UCT)Odiase, Osareme Nathan 14 March 2022 (has links)
The quest for institutional transformation has created a need to continually challenge traditional notions of what an academic is and should be. While several studies have explored academics' experiences to engender transformation systems, few studies have focused strictly on emerging academics (permanently working scholars within the first five years of academic careers). These early-career academics are faced with the challenge of adapting to the institutional culture and meeting disciplinary standards of performance. Their novelty in the system makes them more vulnerable to the effect of these challenges. This study aimed to identify how they navigate these challenges, what defines them as academics, what impacts their academic freedoms, how they challenge disciplinary standards of performance, and the extent to which institutional culture affects their experiences. Through a purposive and snowball sampling strategy, 20 academics were selected from the University of Cape Town (UCT) to study. They were interviewed using a semi-structured approach and were asked openended questions with an interview guide. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the interview data as it utilized an ideographic approach in providing insights into the participants' lived experiences. This methodological approach also helped prioritize how the study is carried out and explore participants' meaning-making processes. The participants perceived being an academic as an opportunity for subjective self-expression and a character-building process. They conceded that being an academic required genuine intellectual curiosity and a platform to engender innovation. The study also uncovered the effects of UCT's institutional and transformative plan on assimilating into the academic space. Academics perceived the performance appraising structure as too prescriptive and affirmed their desire to harness their positions to build strong interpersonal relations with students. The study recommends a more comprehensive and longitudinal approach to studying academic experiences focusing on the psycho-social factors influencing these experiences. The research further suggests a streamlined and faculty-based approach to further strengthening educational support systems at UCT.

Real & Imagined Foundational Narratives in the Context of Colonialism - Resurfacing Through A Phenomenological Separation of Body & SkinLindberg, Carin Susanne Margareta January 2020 (has links)
This paper is attempting to develop Sara Ahmed’s research on phenomenology to include a phenomenological separation of body and skin in order to understand ongoing colonialism in Australia/Country. It is argued that coloniser rejection of colonisee knowledge production has led to a coloniser imaginary foundational narrative. Further, it is argued, colonialism cannot come to an end until the coloniser can create a real foundational narrative and, in turn, this cannot occur until colonisee knowledge production is acknowledged.

Employee Engagement from the Viewpoint of Employees in AcademiaGiles-Merrick, Stephanie 01 January 2018 (has links)
Research does not address how staff in the United States perceive employee engagement in the university system. Leadership training and communication for managers are essential processes that help staff become highly engaged in universities. The purpose of phenomenological study was to explore the views of employees in a selected university within the state of Georgia in an attempt to address positive employee engagement in the academic environment. The engagement theory and social exchange theory were used as the conceptual frameworks to explore how employees engaged in their department working with their managers. To address this question, a purposeful sample of 15 females and 5males full time employees who had a direct line reporting relationship to a manager were selected from one university in the state of Georgia. The research questions indicated what lived experiences of Georgia School system employees feel about engagement and the factors employees identify as the influence on employee engagement. Employees responded to a questionnaire, containing 14 open ended questions, to gather rich data on their lived experiences. Open hand and axial coding extracted data to identify the emergent themes, such as: incentives, increased morale, increased confidence and reverence of management, reward based performance, and organizational productivity. These findings indicate that managers must learn to meet the needs of the employees to positively address employee engagement. This research contributes to positive social change by adding insights for managers seeking to increase productivity.
