An Evaluation of the Music Programs in the Seventh-Day Adventist Academies in the United States

Thurber, Don W. 05 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to survey and evaluate the music programs in Seventh-day Adventist academies in the United States during the 19 75-76 school year. Data were collected by means of a survey form sent to all principals and music teachers in the eighty schools and a music achievement test administered to graduating seniors in twenty-eight randomly selected academies. Although most departments judged the music facilities to be adequate, library materials such as scores, filmstrips, and in-service resources were needed in the majority of schools. One-half of the music programs did not have listening facilities available for classroom use. Comparing achievement test results for graduating seniors in Adventist schools with those of the standardization sample revealed no significant differences. The null hypothesis was rejected, however, when comparing size of school, location of school, type of school (boarding or day), sex of the student, and amount of piano and instrumental experience.

Neoliberal extractivism and rural resistance : the anti-mining movement in the Peruvian Northern Highlands, Cajamarca (2011-2013)

Seo, Ji-Hyun January 2015 (has links)
This dissertation examines the political prospects of rural subaltern groups in the era of neoliberal globalisation by engaging with the ‘death of the peasantry’ debates. To achieve this, it concentrates on rural resistance in the northern highlands of Peru, Cajamarca, against ‘new mineral extraction’ by multinational capital in the form of Minera Yanacocha S.A. (MYSA), with a theoretical framework of critical geography on transnational activism. In particular, the dissertation devotes attention to the massive mobilisations against MYSA’s Conga mining project between 2011 and 2013. The dispossession and disempowerment of the peasantry have been highlighted as the accumulation of global capital has intensified alongside the implementation of market-led development models around the globe. In the 1990s, the extraction and export of abundant natural resources was promoted as a ‘new development alternative’. In tandem with the unprecedented width and depth of resource extraction, the continent has become witness to increasing incidences of struggles led by local communities, particularly in the countryside. Recent Peruvian economic growth has been boosted by a ‘new mining boom’. Simultaneously, many Peruvians are protesting against mining activities, particularly due to their negative social and environmental impact. Cajamarca is one obvious example where neoliberal mineral extraction has generated a series of local struggles since the arrival of MYSA in 1993. The asymmetrical power of multinational capital vis-à-vis campesinos stands out in the context of the emphasis of the central government on ‘national development’ based on natural resource extraction. Against this backdrop, this dissertation examines the re-articulation of rural subjectivities and the political possibilities in their ‘networked form of resistance’, instead of focusing on the fragmentation, powerlessness and passivity of subaltern groups in the face of global capital power. Economic reductionism restricts our understanding of neoliberal globalisation to the exploitation of global capital vs. dispossession of local communities. Following Doreen Massey’s relational geographical approach, the dissertation maintains that it is relevant to understand the ‘relational content’ of global capital mobility and complex dynamics of resistance. In addition, the dualistic framework of geography and power which is based on an essentialist geographical understanding of the spatial (i.e. space/place; powerful global and powerless local) tends to regard local resistance as ‘reactionary’ place-based struggle. Instead, the dissertation focuses on the ‘interconnectedness’ of subaltern groups. It argues that diverse social groups shape what Featherstone terms ‘prefigurative solidarity’ around ‘maps of grievance’, via political resistance. In this process, a political identity is constructed in order to bring neoliberal globalisation into contestation.

Human research subjects, due to their vulnerability status, claim to ethical and legal care. This protection must precede the status in which the research subject is not characterized as such, that is when, as a patient, attends selections to integrate experiments in the case, promoted by Public Higher Education Institutions (HEI). In the legal aspect, patients, research subjects and scientific community were placed under the aegis of the Consumer Protection Code in order to establish the tutelage of this statute on those figures. Faced with this ethical and legal approach, this study aimed, through a literature review, develop a critical analysis of the current format used by public HEIs to the recruitment of research subjects, through their predesigned patients; measure the importance of the announcement of the formal public HEIs in this recruitment context. Also, analyze the legal dichotomy developed around the Consumer Protection Code relevant to patients attended by public HEIs, through the Brazilian Public System of Health (BSH) and the patient treated by the private institution not subjected to the BSH. Finally, check, from the perspective of the Consumer Protection Code, the liability of the scientific community due to damages caused to the research subject. This is an exploratory and descriptive study with qualitative approach, developed from research into existing material in national and international literature, relevant to researches involving human beings, their form of recruitment and liability raised in the face of public and private system of health and, not least, on the legal relationship developed between the research subject and the scientific community. Specifically, the theoretical foundation took over the doctrine of bioethics, the bio law and court order, fostering by the Brazilian law. Databases used were Pubmed, Scielo, Lilacs, Google Scholar, Google and Courts of Justice, with the combination of the following descriptors: Patient Selection, Research Subjects, Consumer Advocacy, Ethics, Research and Academies and Institutes. In the end, is considered that in the public HEI, the research subject recruitment should not configure tacit coercion, being superlative the valuation of intrinsic ethical concepts of human dignity, leaving him, yet compliance with constitutional principles relating to public administration. In this public sphere, the need for notice is formalistic requirement imperative for the recruitment of research subjects. Both systems of health, as public promoted by public HEIs, as the private promoted by the private HEIs are under the authority of the Consumer Protection Code; should still be under the canopy of this instrument the legal status developed between the research subject and the scientific community.

Silva Alvarenga: representante das Luzes na América portuguesa / Silva Alvarenga: representative of the Enlightenment in portuguese America

Tuna, Gustavo Henrique 21 August 2009 (has links)
This thesis tends to comprehend in which ways the poet and regal teacher Manuel Inácio da Silva Alvarenga (1749-1814) can be considered a representative of the Enlightment in Portuguese America. Silva Alvarenga, studying Canonic Law at Coimbra University between 1768 and 1776, experimented the period of the reformation of the university, projected by the Marquis of Pombal. After his return to Brazil, he became Rhetoric regal teacher at Rio de Janeiro, in 1782. He was the most active member of the Sociedade Literária do Rio de Janeiro, founded in 1786. In 1794, he went to prison, accompanied by other members of the Sociedade, accused of promoting the circulation of French ideas and conspiracy against the royal power and the catholic religion. Considering his academic background, his trajetory after his return to Brazil, the aspects of his poetic writings and the constitution of his private library one of the most important of the colonial period , the work tends to appraise in which ways Silva Alvarenga can be considered as a representative of the Enlightment in Portuguese America, aiming to understand which tendencies of the Enlightment can be seen in his trajetory.

Market Development Of Renewable Energy In Turkey

Demirdizen, Hasan Gence 01 January 2013 (has links) (PDF)
Renewable energy is a current issue in the world as well as in Turkey. Turkey has developing policies in the renewable energy field. Although it is a beneficial mean of obtaining energy, there are barriers on renewable energy production. In order to develop renewable energies, those barriers have to be analyzed and suitable implementations should be developed to overcome them. In this thesis policy and implementation on the renewables are evaluated in general and specially for Turkey. The electricity market is one of the crucial factors of development of the renewable energy. The day-ahead market and renewable energy support mechanism in Turkey are investigated. Finally benefit calculations is carried out in order to compare benefits of renewable energy in market and support mechanisms by using real time price and production values of two renewable energy plants / a hydropower and a wind power plants. Further, outcomes of newly developed prediction project for wind power plants are evaluated in terms of market benefit.

Designing Lost Circulation Pills For Polymer Based Drill-in Fluids

Kahvecioglu, Alper 01 December 2008 (has links) (PDF)
Specially designed non-damaging lost circulation pills (LCP) are being effectively applied for drilling depleted zones worldwide. Optimizing the LCP compositions stop the lost circulation effectively and protect the production zone from liquid and solids invasion significantly. Shape, particle size distribution and concentration of the lost circulation materials (LCM) are key parameters determining the effectiveness of LCP. In this study, the Permeability Plugging Apparatus (PPA) is utilized to evaluate effectiveness of various LCM&rsquo / s in curing the lost circulation. Sized calcium carbonates are used as LCM in different concentrations and in different particle size distribution. Lost circulation zones are simulated using the ceramic disks and slotted disks. Ceramic disks with nominal pore sizes 20, 35, 60, 90, and 150 microns are characterized in terms of pore size distribution using the computerized image analysis technique. Filter cake quality, spurt loss and filtrate volume are basic parameters to be evaluated in this study. Tests are performed at 75 F and 300 psi of differential.

The Role Of Vakif Institution In The Conservation Of Vakif Based Cultural Heritage

Akar, Tuba 01 March 2009 (has links) (PDF)
Founded by individuals for religious and charity purposes, the Vakif institution was the main institution in the construction and conservation of the built environment in the Ottoman period. Religious, charitable, municipal, educational, social and health services were provided by spaces such as k&uuml / lliyes, mosques, medreses, hans, baths, shops, etc. which were built through the Vakif Institution. As the underlying concept of the vakif institution was serving forever, the repair of these spaces &ndash / the vakif buildings &ndash / was accepted as a fundamental issue for ensuring the functionality and continuity of the vakif. With this aim, vakif institution set the legal, administrative, technical and financial bases for the continuity of the system within its autonomous and local structure in the classical Ottoman period. With the westernization movements in the Tanzimat era, vakifs were gathered under a central institution called Evkaf Nezareti, which had a central budget and administrative structure. In the Republican period, the General Directorate of Pious Foundations (GDPF) took this centralized institutional structure as it was and since then GDPF has been the heir of the vakif institution and vakif heritage in Turkey. However, GDPF has still not adopted an effective conservation policy. GDPF&rsquo / s attitudes towards the conservation of the vakif cultural properties are far from the understandings of the classical vakif system. Briefly, the change of the main concept of the vakif system after the classical Ottoman period can be considered as the main reason for the increased number of vakif buildings in ruinous state. From this perspective, this thesis aims at forming a model mainly based on adapting the positive aspects of the classical vakif system into the GDPF&rsquo / s conservation mechanism of vakif-based immovable cultural properties. The focus is given on the examination and comparison of the vakif system&rsquo / s past and present attitudes towards sustainable conservation. In this line, it is aimed to adapt the vakif systems&rsquo / applicable legal, administrative and financial approaches towards the conservation to GDPF within the limits of the current administrative and legal system. At another level, the functionality of the proposed model forming of the necessary administrative and legal arrangements is given importance.

Auditable And Verifiable Electronic Voting With Homomorphic Rsa Tallying

Yucel, Okan 01 July 2010 (has links) (PDF)
In this work, we investigate the general structure and the concepts behind the contemporary electronic voting schemes, with special emphasis on voter verifiable preferential voting, homomorphic tallying and voter privacy. We firstly propose a modification in the Single Transferable Voting (STV) method to be applied to large scale elections with electoral barriers. Our proposal prevents the loss of votes and distributes them securely to the second or higher choices of their voters. This method is most suitably used in e-voting with the voter verifiable &ldquo / Pr&ecirc / t &agrave / Voter: All-In-One&rdquo / scheme that utilizes mix-networks for anonymity. We present a case study considering 2007 Turkish Parliamentary Elections to demonstrate the effect of preferential voting on the election systems that have electoral barriers. After the mathematical formulation of the election procedure, we calculate the wasted votes in 2007 elections and present simulation results for 69 election regions (that have no independent parliament members) by using a combination of &ldquo / modified STV and d&rsquo / Hondt&rdquo / methods, according to four different, politically unbiased scenarios on the distribution of secondary vote choices. Additionally, we modify the &ldquo / Pr&ecirc / t &agrave / Voter: All-In-One&rdquo / scheme by proposing three security enhancing modifications in its ballot construction phase: 1) ballot serial number, 2) digital signature of the first clerk in the mix-net, 3) different random numbers for each row of the ballot. Finally, we demonstrate the potential of multiplicative homomorphic algorithms like RSA for homomorphic tallying. The idea is based on the association of each candidate on the electronic ballot with a prime number, and unique prime factorization of the general vote product. We propose novel randomization methods for homomorphic RSA tallying, and discuss the performance and complexity of the scheme with such randomizations. Our suggestion for an auditable and verifiable e-voting scheme that employs homomorphic RSA tallying with proper randomization has advantages over El Gamal and Paillier tallying, such as having the least encryption complexity and strong anonymity resistant to unlimited computational power.
